Hi Jean-Peer, I'll be installing 13.04 in a couple of weeks (will be spending 6 hours in the train to Berlin -> perfect time), and will be happy to test things then and there. (At the same time, I may start looking into Mint.) [Nssbackup-team] [Bug 1179080] Re: sBackup unable to be configured for external media destination
Thanks to all for reporting this issue. I'll look into it and fix it asap! Sorry for any inconvinience. @Alvin Ho (alfkh): maybe it is better to stick to a LTS version (currently 12.04) with long term support and stability? As a side note from the developer view: same holds for me...things are working and suddenly stop with a new version of the distribution (therefore I'm running Debian now). This takes a lot of effort to test pre-release...Help is welcome... [Nssbackup-team] [Bug 1179080] Re: sBackup unable to be configured for external media destination
I am running Xubuntu 13.04 and have the same issue. Xubuntu uses Thunar not Nautilus so I don't think that is the cause, unless they happen to be using a common library. If I set the custom backup location and save and restart app the location is not saved. The only workaround I can think of is to setup /var/backup as a symlink of your custom directory location. I have not tested it, but will report back when I do. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Simple Backup Maintainers, which is subscribed to sbackup. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1179080 Title: sBackup unable to be configured for external media destination To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/sbackup/+bug/1179080/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~nssbackup-team Post to : nssbackup-team@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~nssbackup-team More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
Re: [Nssbackup-team] [Bug 1179080] Re: sBackup unable to be configured for external media destination
I've done a different workaround. I replaced the config file for sbackup with the one from 12.04, and edited it to match the new environment. In a terminal window, I run "gksudo /usr/bin/sbackup-config-gtk" (which enables admin/root so that a scheduled backup can be done). This opens the sbackup dialog box and I click on the "make backup" button without touching any of the other tabs. I still get the error window popping up (twice) but click OK each time and the backup then runs. I have to close both the process id pop-up window and the sbackup window for the backup to proceed. You can try that as an alternative to reverting to the earlier version of Ubuntu. Fortunately for me, i installed a 12.04.2LTS partition on the same disk. I managed to boot into that partition & restore my data to it. Since it was not a lot of data, I was able to restore it without too much pain. I'm quite a newbie at this, so to me, it should make no difference if i'm root, or normal user with sudo priveledges. It was working in 12.04, 12.10 right? & in 13.04 it stopped working. I can only conclude that something has changed in 13.04; the only major change i'm aware of is NAUTILUS. Apparently sbackup queries some feature from Nautilus that is no longer there. The only way we can know for sure, is if we can install a 13.04 system with a 12.10 or 12.04 version of nautilus & try to change the backup destination. In the meantime, i think i'm gonna de-install/un-install sbackup. As an aside, it is possible to run sbackup scheduled as user using crontab, but this cannot be configured from within the Simple Backup Config tool. I use Gnome Schedule tool to set it up. The commandline that you want to run is '/usr/share/sbackup/sbackup-launch'. Re: [Nssbackup-team] [Bug 1179080] Re: sBackup unable to be configured for external media destination
Dear Anton, I am using sbackup as root, because I want to have regular scheduled backups and that has not been possible with "normal" user access. Specifically, nothing has changed in my directory structures at all, the only change being from 12.10 to 13.04. All my folder names are alphabetical or alpha-numeric without spaces or "odd" characters. My external destination backup drive is the same one as I have been using for the past 3 or 4 years, always with sBackup (I did try deja dup for a bit, but decided it was hopeless when it came time to restore files, so reverted to sbackup), and basically the same sbackup configuration file, although I have re-built it when I have installed a new distro release. Can you tell me the exact path and filename for the sbackup configuration file, please? Perhaps I can restore it from an earlier archive, and use it in place of the one which the current installation prevents from being configured. Are there any special (non alphabetical) characters in your directory name(s)? Could you check if you can set the desired local backup target using the configuration file (/etc/sbackup.conf for root, or ~/.config/sbackup/sbackup.conf for user)? Look for a line that says 'target = ' and add the target directory after the equal sign (I believe a space between equal sign and directory name is required). Best, Anton.

Hi Catalin, Thank you for the feedback. Unfortunately, the functionality remains affected for me. Although I selected "Use custom local backup directory" and clicked away the messages that came up a couple of times, selected the external drive, clicked away the messages a couple more times, it appeared to keep the selected external drive, so I saved the configuration, then attempted to run a backup. I then received the error: An error occurred Not enough free space in the target directory for the planned backup (free: 166120 MiB 484 KiB, required: 218136 MiB 308 KiB 698). Upon checking, it was attempting to use the default backup directory (/var/backup), not the external drive. So I am still without a convenient backup tool (I have tried Deja Dup, but don't like it, especially when I need to restore a file).
