You do sound a bit impatient, but the answer is: bibtex is a beast, but bibliographies is such an endless topic, there are so many permutations and possibilities and options that "replacing bibtex" is easier said than done. bibtex gets the job done, most of the time, and I've always heard that there will be a "next big thing which will replace bibtex," but it never quite happened. zotero's approach (a completely untransparent, complex and hence fragile sql database) is a lot worse than bibtex. As to the question "why strings": Pontus's answer named one important aspect. I have several .bib files which contain nothing but string definitions: one with abbreviated, one with full journal titles; one with English strings ("reprint," "Munich") and one with the German equivalent ("Nachdruck," "München"). Including the right file(s) will then provide the desired output. Okay, then I should definitely take a look at JabRef. Anyhow, maybe I'm naive here, but I don't see a reason why Zotero should support BibTeX Strings. If I type the BibTeX file manually, sure. [NTG-context] alternating items in an itemization
I'd like to define an itemization that has two kinds of items, representing a dialogue between two people. (One could imagine extending this to more than two.) I'd like to have something like this: \startdialogue \john What did you have for breakfast? \mary I skipped breakfast today. \john Oh, why? \mary Because I wasn't hungry. I was too distraught at what had happened the previous night. \stopdialogue The \john and \mary parts would each be their own paragaphs. The paragraphs would be colored with different text backgrounds, and joined up with one another (that is, the blocks of text representing the paragraphs for the different speakers would be adjacent to one another). I've tried doing this using \defineparagraphs, \defineframedtext, and \defineenumerations, but I can't quite get the right effect; \setupcolors[state=start] \definetextbackground[john-background][backgroundcolor=green] \definetextbackground[mary-background][backgroundcolor=red] \definestartstop[dialogue] \defineparagraphs[john][before={\starttextbackground[john-background]},after={\stoptextbackground}] \defineparagraphs[mary][before={\starttextbackground[mary-background]},after={\stoptextbackground}] Putting this before the above \start/stopdialogue snippet (suitably enclosed in \start/stoptext) gives me an error about a missing "}"; I suppose I'm overlooking something. An enumeration-based solution would be along these lines: \defineenumeration [chat] \setupenumerations [chat] [joinedup, packed] \define[0]\john{\item John: } \define[0]\may{\item Mary: } I can't figure out how to get the textbackgrounds to work here, and there's a bullet symbol at the beginning of every "dialogue paragraph", which I'd rather get rid of (and I don't want the indent between the bullet and the beginning of the text). A framed-text solution starts to come close: \defineframedtext[john][frame=off,background=color,backgroundcolor=magenta] \defineframedtext[mary][frame=off,background=color,backgroundcolor=lightred] But then the boxed paragraphs are separated from each other by some vertical whitespace. Another idea would be to use tables, but I haven't explored that yet. Any suggestions for how to render "dialogues" as above in ConTeXt? [NTG-context] query about referring to pdf attachments
Can one refer to PDF attachments as though they were local files? I'd like to treat the PDF as a kind of rudimentary filesystem. Whatever is attached to the PDF can be found under the "root directory" of the PDF. One could then place hyperlinks to these files which, when followed, cause an attachment to be opened (say, a music player, a web browser, etc.). Ideally, one would be able to do something like this: \useattachment[my-video][my-video.mpg] \attachment[my-video] \useURL[my-video-url][file:///my-video.mpg][][Awesome Video] \starttext Follow the link to \from[my-video-url]! \stoptext The "file:///my-video.mpg" URI is a guess; the idea is to somehow refer to a file placed in the PDF's "filesystem". Re: [NTG-context] Hyphenating compound words in MKIV & microtypographyy
On 23-5-2011 5:54, Otso Helenius wrote: it produces larger files, take more runtime and in most cases does not look better at all; for instance one can argue that protrusion gives more width but at the same time it introduces the boundary condition that some characters have to hang; or take hz (expansion) ... when applied so much that it gets visible, it will also lead to similar shapes in successive lines to look different so, just enabling these features assuming that the output looks better is debatable (sometimes adding or removing a word is more effective) I agree, in many cases automatic layout of content can look horrific because the algorithms aren't able to solve each possible case in a near optimal way (while we as humans are). And also, there is no question about it, *every* setting should be possible to turn on and off depending on the situation. Just as with WYSIWYG tools such as InDesign, manual adjustment of layout is needed to achieve optimal results. But my actual complaint is this: the example I pasted was a very trivial and simple typesetting task. Even the current versions MS Office can automatically achieve acceptable paragraph look with the given input. In such case there should not be any need to manually adjust spacing and expansion of words nor forcing the column into a ragged one. The output of this MKIV source: \mainlanguage[fi] \language[fi] \definefontfeature[default][default][protrusion=quality, expansion=quality] \setupalign[hz, hanging, spacing] \starttext \startcolumns[n=2] \dorecurse{10}{kolmivaihekilowattituntimittari ympäristöliiketoiminta epäjärjestelmällisyydellistyttymättömyydellänsäkään järjestelmällisentelentelemättömyydellänsäkään hääyöaie kolmivaihekilowattituntimittari ympäristöliiketoiminta epäjärjestelmällisyydellistyttymättömyydellänsäkään järjestelmällisentelentelemättömyydellänsäkään hääyöaie} \stopcolumns \stoptext can be downloaded here: https://pi-xi.net/share/context_hyphen.pdf I also wrote a "close as possible" equivalent of the code above in LaTeX and compiled it with pdfTeX (TL 2011): \documentclass[12pt, twocolumn, a4paper, finnish]{article} \usepackage[utf8]{inputenc} \usepackage[finnish]{babel} \usepackage{ae} \usepackage[auto=true, spacing=true, kerning=true, tracking=true, protrusion=true, expansion=true]{microtype} \usepackage{pgffor} \setlength{\parindent}{0mm} \newcommand{\Repeat}[2]{\foreach \n in {1,...,#1}{#2}} \begin{document} \foreach \n in {1,...,10}{kolmivaihekilowattituntimittari ympäristöliiketoiminta epäjärjestelmällisyydellistyttymättömyydellänsäkään järjestelmällisentelentelemättömyydellänsäkään hääyöaie kolmivaihekilowattituntimittari ympäristöliiketoiminta epäjärjestelmällisyydellistyttymättömyydellänsäkään järjestelmällisentelentelemättömyydellänsäkään hääyöaie} \end{document} The LaTeX example can be downloaded here: https://pi-xi.net/share/latex_hyphen.pdf As can be seen, the neither versions have any specific adjustments done by hand: both only have the microtypographic features turned on. There is no comparison, the pdfTeX version looks superior: there are no rivers, all lines are justified to equal length, and the expansion and spacing are both acceptable. (1) The 'spacing' options does not work and even gives an error in mkiv) so remove that one. What version of context are you running? I've already fotgotten about it but I think it was an experimental pdftesx feature with side effects. In pdftex hz and protrusion is also somewhat tricky as it can bleed from one font instance to another (due to traditional tex's internal font sharing), although context takes some precautions. (2) But, more important: add \setuplayout[width=middle] to give context a more similar opportunity to produce something acceptable. You're now giving context a disadvantage of narrower columns. (3) You can remove the \language as you already set \mainlanguage. (4) In context protrusion and expansion is a font property and applying it globally to all fonts (with some flag) will not happen. Actually, in some situations you need to turn it on explicitly (imaging hanging happening when you're doing a table). I don't know what latex's default layout setup is but if you want to do an experiment, you need to make sure that you use the same widths of columns. [NTG-context] \startquotation and citations
Dear all, I'm struggling with quotation blocks and proper placing of citations… In an ideal world I'd be striving for something like this: \startquotation[source=…] \input tufte \stopquotation where … could be either of: 1. a simple string: {Edward Tufte}, 2. a citation command: \cite[Tuf:] 3. a footnote: \footnote{See \cite[Tuf:]} This should be typeset immediately after the closing delimiter and well before \stopnarrower. In the real world (and with a deadline approaching rapidly) I've tried two approaches so far: 1. A hack dating back three years which bypasses the delimitedtext mechanism. --- \long\def\startextendedquotation[#1]#2\stopextendedquotation {\bgroup\par \blank[halfline] \startnarrower[4em] \symbol[leftquotation]% #2\removeunwantedspaces \symbol[rightquotation]#1 \stopnarrower \blank[halfline] \par\egroup} \starttext \input tufte \startextendedquotation[\footnote{See Tufte…}] \input tufte \stopextendedquotation \input tufte \stoptext --- Here the footnote actually appears, however, the beginning of the quotation looks weird (and setting up margins etc. is a bit messy). 2. Another hack which employs delimitedtext but abuses its closing delimiter option: --- \setupdelimitedtext [quotation] [leftmargin=4em, rightmargin=4em, spacebefore=halfline, spaceafter=halfline] \starttext \input tufte \bgroup \setupdelimitedtext [quotation] [right={\symbol[rightquotation]\footnote{See Tufte…}}] \startquotation \input tufte \stopquotation \egroup \input tufte \stoptext --- This approach places the opening delimiter nicely in the margin of the quotation block but sadly swallows the footnote (ordinary strings seem fine though). How to combine the looks of 2 with the footnotes of 1? The less setup lines one has to add before \starttext to get high quality results the better. it produces larger files, take more runtime and in most cases does not look better at all; for instance one can argue that protrusion gives more width but at the same time it introduces the boundary condition that some characters have to hang; or take hz (expansion) ... when applied so much that it gets visible, it will also lead to similar shapes in successive lines to look different so, just enabling these features assuming that the output looks better is debatable (sometimes adding or removing a word is more effective) Hans - Hans Hagen | PRAGMA ADE Ridderstraat 27 | 8061 GH Hasselt | The Netherlands tel: 038 477 53 69 | voip: 087 875 68 74 | www.pragma-ade.com | www.pragma-pod.nl - ___ If your question is of interest to others as well, please add an entry to the Wiki! maillist : ntg-context@ntg.nl / http://www.ntg.nl/mailman/listinfo/ntg-context webpage : http://www.pragma-ade.nl / http://tex.aanhet.net archive : http://foundry.supelec.fr/projects/contextrev/ wiki : http://contextgarden.net ___

You can load file in subdirectories when you set the directory with \usepath[] and \usesubpath[], you have to replace “\input ” also with “\component ” (or “\usecomponent[]”) otherwise context won’t like in the subdirectories. [NTG-context] how to change current directory ?
Title: Samsung Enterprise Portal mySingle Greeting context users, Thank you for such a good tool. Here is my question regarding changing of current directory. I have quite a number of separate main.tex in different directories. Each main.tex is calling submain.tex in the same directory. Compilation of each main.tex in its own directory is fine. What I am trying to do is compiling all submain.tex into one pdf file with minimum change. To accomplish my objective, I made a master file and put “\input …\every\submain.tex”. By now, I assume you know what I am getting at. My objective is not going to get done. I have to change all \input commands inside each submain.tex to reflect the absolute path. I guess there should be one way or the other to change current-directory, so that make my job simple. It would be greatly appreciated if you can shed light on this. Thank you in advance.
