The reason for not posting the card ealier is that it uses New Euler, a
reshaped design of Euler by Hermann Zapf. The official release date was
10/1/2008, Don Knuths 70th birthday, to who this font is dedicated. The
font itself cellebrates its 25th birthday.

The redesign involves changes in strokes, many small details so that the
fonts can be used at larger sizes, a few new glyphs, but also some more
drastic updates. These fonts replace the existing euler. The fonts are
metric compatible with the old ones.

This year the second stage of the New Euler project starts which will
result in a substantial covering of unicode math.

[NTG-context] Installing Type 1 fonts into ConTeXt

2008-01-11 Thread Pascal de Bruijn
Hi,

I'm trying to install Type 1 fonts into ConTeXt, I'm using texfont, and all
but one font properly generate:

Good:
\starttyping
\definefontsynonym[Humanist777BT-BoldB][texnansi-hum777b][encoding=texnansi]
\definefontsynonym[Humanist777BT-BoldItalicB][texnansi-hum777bi][encoding=texnansi]
\definefontsynonym[Humanist777BT-ItalicB][texnansi-hum777i][encoding=texnansi]
\definefontsynonym[Humanist777BT-RomanB][texnansi-hum777n][encoding=texnansi]
\stoptyping

Bad:
\starttyping
\definefontsynonym[][texnansi-zhu601bi][encoding=texnansi]
\definefontsynonym[ZapfHumanist601BT-Bold][texnansi-zhum601b][encoding=texnansi]
\definefontsynonym[ZapfHumanist601BT-Italic][texnansi-zhum601i][encoding=texnansi]
\definefontsynonym[ZapfHumanist601BT-Roman][texnansi-zhum601n][encoding=texnansi]
\stoptyping
(Complete file attached)

Does anybody have a clue why the first define went sour? Which tool is used
to extract the metadata from the .pfb files?

Also, I'm currently installing in ~/texmf, however, say I'd want to make
these fonts available system-wide, what would be the correct place to move
them?

And texfont creates a series of .tex files (containing the above text), what
is the properly location to put them? I don't want to copy these files into
each project directory.

Pascal de Bruijn

If you mean simple rename to Unicode.ttf, copy into appropriate dir,
 luatools --generate, well ,
this did not work last night.

This can be caused by a number of things:

  1. The original font file name was still stored in the cache.
  2. You kept Unicode.otf along with Unicode.ttf, and ConTeXt ignored
 the latter.
  3. A combination of the two.

If I clear the Unicode.tm? files in the cache and suppress Unicode.otf
altogether, it works on my machine.

No, you're right, Unicode names are absolutely normative. So
normative, actually, that Unicode and ISO guarantee that they will never
change, ever (they're among the very few so-called stable properties).
But, as already said, in the case of symbols, I don't think they're

That's what I thought at first, but then I realized it could be useful
for characters with diacritics, whose names are much more predictable in
general (at least for some diacritic marks). And then you could add
named sequences (http://www.unicode.org/Public/UNIDATA/NamedSequences.txt)
which are a couple of additional names for some specific *sequences* of
Unicode characters.

In my experience, you have to get the coordination between pfb and tfm
exactly right. Things are case sensitive etc... I'm sure there's just a
typo or mismatch somewhere

Also, I'm currently installing in ~/texmf, however, say I'd want to

Better to put them in texmf-local or, even better, texmf-project (may have

can help it.

See also the MyWay I wrote on this topic, maybe something in there will
help.

 Hi,

I assume today's upload has made that 'current'. I wrote
 a page at http://wiki.contextgarden.net/Context_2008.01.11
but no summary on the main page; because I do not trust that
I have not missed something important (like the unicode math).

Can someone (Hans) please check that page and write a small
 stub entry for http://wiki.contextgarden.net/Release_Notes ?

 Best wishes,
 Taco

So I take it enrichment will replace fea files? Anything known
 about syntax etc. yet?

no, in this case it was just more convenient to implement tlig and trep
as pseudo features (instead of --in node mode-- handle them like base
mode features which makes not less dynamic etc etc etc

i must say that the thought occured to me to write a fea merger in lau
but this is more something for the ff libary

Hans

Does anybody have a clue why the first define went sour? Which tool

Looks like a typing error in the pfb rename of 0018a___.pfb: it should
be named zhum601bi.pfb (note the 'm').

Is renaming required? I got the fonts from a CorelDRAW cdrom. I used
 the
  files as is.

Anyway other font collections also have deviating filenames, and they
  work
  just fine.

In my experience, you have to get the coordination between pfb and tfm
exactly right. Things are case sensitive etc... I'm sure there's just a
 typo or mismatch somewhere

I renamed all the fonts according to:
http://www.tug.org/fontname/html/Bitstream-fonts.html#Bitstream-fonts

I did this using a script, so there very little chance of error.

Also, I'm currently installing in ~/texmf, however, say I'd want to
makethese fonts available system-wide, what would be the correct place
  to movethem?

Better to put them in texmf-local or, even better, texmf-project (may have
to edit setuptex.bat in that case). I NEVER install anything in texmf if I
 can help it.

See also the MyWay I wrote on this topic, maybe something in there will
 help.

I'll take a look at it tomorrow.

Works as expected now
ConTeXt ver: 2008.01.11 12:09 MKIV fmt: 2008.1.12 int: english/english
This is LuaTeX, Version snapshot-0.20.2-2007121721

That's great news, but now that's because Hans has fixed the old
behaviour in today's (yesterday's) release ;-)
