[NTG-context] Different luatex binary

2009-02-13 Thread Mehdi Omidali
Hi,
I have installed the context minimal on windows and have seen a
strange thing. The luatex binay in the minimal directory is only 2.5
kb but the one in the foundry.supelec.fr is 2.64 Mb zipped. Also I am
not able to compile my files which I could compile them 2 month ago.
The end of my log file is

!luaTeX error (file C:/WINDOWS/Fonts/XB Kayhan.ttf): can't find table `CFF '
 == Fatal error occurred, no output PDF file produced!

The source file is huge but I can send it if it is necessary.
Thanks

[NTG-context] Unicode Math - what it is

2009-02-13 Thread Michail Vidiassov

Dear All,

sorry for a stupid question, the unicode math that is about to come
means formula input using Unicode Math instead of tex commands as
suggested in

Unicode Nearly Plain-Text Encoding of Mathematics

http://www.unicode.org/notes/tn28/UTN28-PlainTextMath-v2.pdf

or use of the Unicode fonts with math ranges in rendering
the result?
BTW, what are the options for getting a unicode math font?
Taking one from MS Office 2007? Waiting for Stix fonts (what happened yo
them, there seems to be a delay fir yunpublihrt reason.?

[NTG-context] left page / right page layout

2009-02-13 Thread Antoine Junod
Dear list,

One more (last) problem regarding layout I can't resolve by myself:

I've got a little booklet (2 A5 pages on one A4 sheet). The outside
margins are colored in blue. I would like to color the left outside
margin in yellow and keep the right outside margin in blue.

I've read and tried to adapt the 'Alternative backgrounds' example on
the wiki without any success. When I try to use leftpage (or
rightpage) in \setupbackgrounds, the background of the whole left page
is colored.

Here is what I have right now:

Not so easy because you can't use backgrounds tricks but it can
be done with modified page dimension.

Here is my setup:

\setuppapersize[A5][A4]

Make the resulting page 2mm larger on each side.

\definepapersize[A5plus][width=150mm,height=214mm]

[NTG-context] local footnotes

2009-02-13 Thread Albrecht Kauffmann
Hi all,

please have a look to the following small table with its own footnotes:

\setupoutput[pdftex]
\starttext
\startlocalfootnotes[n=0,conversion=characters]
\placetable[here][]{}
\placelegend
{
\tfx
\setupTABLE [frame=off]
\bTABLE
\bTR\bTD   1990 \eTD\bTD 1991  \eTD\eTR

Stadtbevoelkerung} \eTD\bTD
26.1 \eTD\eTR
\eTABLE
}
{\placelocalfootnotes}
\stoplocalfootnotes
\stoptext

The problem is that the footnotes are printed centered over a very small
linewidth. To avoid this I can put every footnote text in a \hbox and then
use \leftaligned{\placelocalfootnotes}}, but this
is rather cumbersome. Has anyone a better solution?

With many thanks in advance,
Albrecht

[NTG-context] startup script stubs (for unix)

2009-02-13 Thread frantisek holop
hello gang,

after almost a year of traveling i am back.
anybody missed me? :] thought so.

i have made the openbsd installation of context
on top of texexec3 wiki page on the context wiki
because i frequently reinstall my notebook and start
from scratch with all my software. i realize by now
texlive is the new thing but before i make context
minimal work on openbsd i still prefer to bring
up to date context on the much less bloated base
of tetex3.

my biggest gripe at the moment always at the end
the ruby scripts...

but this is something that could be easily changed.
i personally find the following instructions the
most helpful:
http://wiki.contextgarden.net/TeTeX_3.0_installation#Ruby_scripts

at the moment, the directory
/usr/local/share/texmf-local/scripts/context/stubs/unix/
contains a bunch of scripts that are nice but unusable because

1. they dont have the x bit set

2. most of them contain something like

texmfstart somescript $@

while texmfstart itself is not defined anywhere

it would be really nice if these stubs could be just dropped
as replacements for any current scripts and work out of the box.

i am not sure my proposed solution is a good one, because
frankly, except texexec i have never used any of the other
scripts.. but looking at the afore-quoted wikipage it seems
to me that the author favoured the approach of calling all
the other sripts using texexec. the beauty of this is
that no other scripts need to be installed.

so what do you people think about the following approach:

stub for texmfstart to be put under /usr/local/bin/texmfstart:
#!/bin/sh

ruby `kpsewhich --format=texmfscripts texmfstart.rb` $@

stub for texexe to be put under /usr/local/bin/texexec:
#!/bin/sh

SCRIPTNAME=`basename $0`

if [ X$SCRIPTNAME = Xtexexec ]; then
exec texmfstart texexec.rb $@
else
exec texmfstart $SCRIPTNAME $@
fi

and all the other script stubs could be removed i guess...

Re: [NTG-context] layout problem

2009-02-13 Thread Antoine Junod
Dear all,

I follow up my own post to answer my own question:

Antoine Junod t...@tots-ns.net writes:

[...]

 * My 'printer' (the company that will print the booklet for me, not
   sure that the good word) asks me to provide him with a document that
   is 2mm larger and 2mm higher that the final one to be sure he can
   print precisely to the exact border of the paper. I don't want to
   magnify the whole document as it will maybe cut some
   information. Any idea on how I could achive that?

What I did first has been to define two new paper sizes. The first
one, pca4 is the format I have to send to the printer. The second one
is exactly half size of the first one:

\definepapersize[pca4][width=212mm,height=299mm]
\definepapersize[pca5][width=149.5mm, height=212mm]

Then, I put two pca5 on one pca5:

\setuppapersize[pca5][pca4]
\setuparranging[2UP,rotated]

The only thing I changed to my layout was the outside margin
(rightmargin), to which I added pca5.width minus a5.width (that is
1.5mm).

\definelayout
[default]
[leftmargin=0mm,rightmargin=25.5mm, % instead of 24mm
 topspace=0mm,backspace=10mm,
 width=115mm,height=middle]

\setuplayout[location=middle]
\setuplayout[default]

This is not a good solution because the 'security' milimeters are part
of the margin (ie, if you center something in the margin, it won't be
still centered after printing / cutting).

So, if anybody has a solution to even 'extend' the borders of a given
size or put graphics on the 'container' (here, pca4), I'm a buyer :)

Thanks to everybody,
-AJ

[NTG-context] Creating a nomenclature section?

2009-02-13 Thread Michael Bynum
I haven't been able to find any documentation about producing a
nomenclature section in a document using context. In the absence of a
command/module providing the functionality of something like the
nomencl package in latex, I was wondering if anyone else had an
elegant work around for this issue. I guess I could just use a list
to make a nomenclature section, but that would lose a lot of the
functionality that makes something like nomencl useful.

Yes, you can do that in XeTeX.
(I don't think this is a good idea to do so. math characters are
difficult to input using standard keyboard.)

 http://www.unicode.org/notes/tn28/UTN28-PlainTextMath-v2.pdf

 or use of the Unicode fonts with math ranges in rendering
 the result?

You should be very careful by doing so.

Math support is very different from standard text.
It requires more parameters than normal text to determine the position
of the glyphs (normal fonts won't contain these information).
Yes, you can use these fonts, but for most of the time you will get
ugly results.

 BTW, what are the options for getting a unicode math font?

Betreff: [NTG-context] local footnotes

Hi all,

please have a look to the following small table with its own footnotes:

\setupoutput[pdftex]
\starttext
\startlocalfootnotes[n=0,conversion=characters]
\placetable[here][]{}
\placelegend
{
\tfx
\setupTABLE [frame=off]
\bTABLE
\bTR\bTD   1990 \eTD\bTD 1991  \eTD\eTR

Stadtbevoelkerung} \eTD\bTD
26.1 \eTD\eTR
\eTABLE
}
{\placelocalfootnotes}
\stoplocalfootnotes
\stoptext

The problem is that the footnotes are printed centered over a very small
linewidth. To avoid this I can put every footnote text in a \hbox and then
use \leftaligned{\placelocalfootnotes}}, but this
is rather cumbersome. Has anyone a better solution?

With many thanks in advance,
Albrecht

Hi,

maybe like this:

\setupoutput[pdftex]
\starttext
\startlocalfootnotes[n=0,conversion=characters]
\placetable[here][]{}
% \placelegend
{
\tfx
\setupTABLE [frame=off]
\bTABLE
\bTR\bTD   1990 \eTD\bTD 1991  \eTD\eTR

\bTR\bTD 2.\note[foot:a] \eTD\bTD 19.0 \eTD\eTR

\bTR\bTD 3.\note[foot:b] \eTD\bTD
26.1 \eTD\eTR
\eTABLE
}
\footnotetext[foot:a]{Bezogen auf das Jahresmittel der Gesamtbevoelkerung}
\footnotetext[foot:b]{Bezogen auf das Jahresmittel der Stadtbevoelkerung}
{\placelocalfootnotes}
\stoplocalfootnotes
\stoptext

This gives footnotes at textwidth.

Greetings

Thomas

Currently, you can't do that unless:
* Use OCP and type1 fonts, the only publicly available font (that I know
  of) is OmegaSerifArabic, which is not that atractive.
* Typeset the plain TeX document with ConTeXt and use ConTeXt's OpenType

  is plain TeX+ not plain any more.

If you sent me a sample Unicode encoded plain TeX file, I'll gladly try

What version of luatex is in the repository and what version of

I had an impression that the luatex version is the stable one, but
there's currently a bit of a problem since official context beta
requires the latest luatex from svn trunk and that version doesn't
work with current context. I need to fix that somehow. Does at least
a hello-world program work?

You might need to wait for Hans and Taco to come back and fix the
problem. One thing that you can try is to take the latest version of
luatex from w32tex
(ftp://akagi.ms.u-tokyo.ac.jp/pub/TeX/win32/luatex-dev-w32.tar.bz2)
and try the --context=alpha just to see if it works any better, but
the latest version of ConTeXt might suffer from a few other problems.

1. Mixed-up categories: Plain TeX is a macropackage, luaTeX is an engine.

2. Your question is way too general. You could use ArabTeX with the
original TeX engine, and there are other systems out there too...

3. For real-life 21'st century practical purposes (viz utf-8 + opentype)
your choices are XeTeX and LuaTeX.

4. Without a more precise question I cannot really recommend which way to
go from here.

[NTG-context] centering fit question

2009-02-13 Thread Alan Stone
Hello,

In the underneath example, the only way I found to have everything
horizontally and vertically centered in the text and margin header,
as well as fit into the margin header, is as follows:

\setuplayout[margin=3cm]

\showframe

\def\myText{%
% \hfill some text \hfill}
%\starthiding
   \framed[%
width=\textwidth,
height=\headerheight,
align=middle,
top=\vss,
bottom=\vss,
frame=off]
{some text}}
%\stophiding

\def\myMarginText{%
% \hfill this is some margin text \hfill}
%\starthiding
   \framed[%
width=\marginwidth,
height=\headerheight,
align=middle,
top=\vss,
bottom=\vss,
frame=off]
{this is some longer margin text}}
%\stophiding

\setuppagenumbering[location=footer]

%\setupheader[%
% before=\vss,
% after=\vss]

\setupheadertexts[text]
 [\myText]
 [\myText]

\setupheadertexts[margin]
 [\myMarginText]
 [\myMarginText]

\starttext
test
\stoptext

What's the way to get the same result without using \framed
and without making the margin wider ?

Uncommenting what's commented in the code above centers
everything ok, but the margin text doesn't fit.

Thanks.

 hello gang,

Hello Frantisek,

Just a quick note ... not too many people on the list might be able to
follow since there are probably not too many tetex3 users around, and
the page you refer to is old as earth, so keep using whatever fits you
best. Did you want to suggest changes on the webpage or did you want
to ask if some procedure works?

(I fully understand why you want to keep using tetex.)

 i have made the openbsd installation of context
 on top of texexec3 wiki page on the context wiki
 because i frequently reinstall my notebook and start
 from scratch with all my software. i realize by now
 texlive is the new thing but before i make context
 minimal work on openbsd i still prefer to bring
 up to date context on the much less bloated base
 of tetex3.

 my biggest gripe at the moment always at the end
 the ruby scripts...

 but this is something that could be easily changed.
 i personally find the following instructions the
 most helpful:
 http://wiki.contextgarden.net/TeTeX_3.0_installation#Ruby_scripts

 at the moment, the directory
 /usr/local/share/texmf-local/scripts/context/stubs/unix/
 contains a bunch of scripts that are nice but unusable because

 1. they dont have the x bit set

 2. most of them contain something like

texmfstart somescript $@

 while texmfstart itself is not defined anywhere

That folder is not meant to be a replacement for binaries. It's just a
folder where files can be taken from and put somewhere else
afterwards. They don't have the x bit set because zip on windows
doesn't handle permission bits.

Concerning texmfstart: it's now part of texlive and it's part of
minimals. You cannot expect recent binaries to be already part of an
ancient tex distribution. Hans probably won't add texmfstart to that
folder since distribution is supposed to take care of that.

If you need a simple command to fetch all in one run, just do (single
line in case it gets broken):
   rsync -av rsync://contextgarden.net/minimals/current/bin/context/linux/bin/
/usr/local/bin/

 it would be really nice if these stubs could be just dropped
 as replacements for any current scripts and work out of the box.

Is there any other problem apart from the executable bit (that Hans is
not able to fix comfortably)?

 i am not sure my proposed solution is a good one, because
 frankly, except texexec i have never used any of the other
 scripts.. but looking at the afore-quoted wikipage it seems
 to me that the author favoured the approach of calling all
 the other sripts using texexec.

You mean texmfstart?

  the beauty of this is
 that no other scripts need to be installed.

 so what do you people think about the following approach:

 stub for texmfstart to be put under /usr/local/bin/texmfstart:
 #!/bin/sh

 ruby `kpsewhich --format=texmfscripts texmfstart.rb` $@

At the moment this file is a literal copy of texmfstart.rb. It's like
a chicken-and-egg problem. Hans wants to get rid of kpathsea, but by
copying the file one doesn't always get the latest texmfstart (one
needs to make sure that it's always up-to-date). The ruby `kpsewhich
... approach is also OK.

 stub for texexe to be put under /usr/local/bin/texexec:
 #!/bin/sh

 SCRIPTNAME=`basename $0`

 if [ X$SCRIPTNAME = Xtexexec ]; then
exec texmfstart texexec.rb $@
 else
exec texmfstart $SCRIPTNAME $@
 fi

 and all the other script stubs could be removed i guess...

You don't need to copy other files/stubs if you don't need them, but
some people depend on existence of some tools like ctxtools (which is
easier to use than texmfstart ctxtools). If you don't need other
scripts, just ignore them.

(The scripts described on tetex installation page are probably not
used my many people. But those pages need to be fixed and unified
somehow.)

No. No in the sense that it's just about support for modern math fonts
(that are about to come). Users should not notice the difference in

The answer to your question might as well be a tiny bit of yes because

to do that by typing those characters directly with a keyboard.

I have an impression that the document (even thoug the page is not

Yes.

 BTW, what are the options for getting a unicode math font?

Stix is not (and probably will not be) supported unless someone else
writes support for those fonts or unless they publish the proper
OpenType version. You can already use Cambria Math or Asana Math in
mkiv with the non-released LuaTeX with ConTeXt beta from Pragma.

Other math fonts (LM, px, tx, ...) are currently remapped to the
proper Unicode range to make them behave as if they were proper
OpenType math fonts. But they still need some testing and fixes.

Unicode Tech Note #28 is completely unrelated to TeX. It is a
suggestion for a different method of encoding math, distinct from TeX,
MathML, c., but with the advantage that it looks nearly like plain
(Unicode) text. The paper was written by Murray Sargent of Microsoft,

it at http://blogs.msdn.com/murrays/. The input to Office 2007+ Math
is based on this paper, and you can in fact switch an equation in Word

XML-based OMML.)

Re: [NTG-context] Unicode Math - what it is

2009-02-13 Thread Michail Vidiassov
Dear Mojca and All,

 sorry for a stupid question, the unicode math that is about to come
 means formula input using Unicode Math instead of tex commands as
 suggested in Unicode Nearly Plain-Text Encoding of Mathematics

 The answer to your question might as well be a tiny bit of yes because
 I'm not sure what exactly you are asking. The side effect of this
 transition is also that you should be able to use mathematical greek
 italic alpha instead of \alpha or α, or mathematical italic letter a
 instead of just plain $a$, but I doubt that any sane user would want to do
 that by typing those characters directly with a keyboard.

 I have an impression that the document (even thoug the page is not
 accessible) is about the way to input math in Word. Is there any feature in
 TeX (input) that you are missing?

Alternative URL is
http://www.activemath.org/workshops/MathUI/07/proceedings/Sargent-TwoSyntaxes-MathUI07.pdf

And the system described is that tiny bit of yes on steroids -
not only variables, but also operators, like using the unicode N-ARY
SUMMATION instead of \sum

As to the user sanity - inconvenient input may be balanced by easy reading -
if formulae get very long math symbols come convenient.
And no need to give up typing in favour of mousing things out of glyph
tables - replace on input or search-and-replace on command are in almost
any editor nowdays, to say nothing of sed.

 BTW, what are the options for getting a unicode math font?
 Taking one from MS Office 2007? Waiting for Stix fonts

 Stix is not (and probably will not be) supported
Are there any information about their plans to release anything?
They promised to make fonts proper after beta release, but later
turned silent.
 You can already use Cambria Math or Asana Math in mkiv with the
 non-released LuaTeX with ConTeXt beta from Pragma.
How? What are the typescripts?

   Sincerely, Michail

Hello,

teTeX3 is less bloated than ConTeXt minimals??

I suggest 2 options:

1.) Install cont-tmf.zip and fonts on top of tetex3
For this option, you can take a look into
http://pmrb.free.fr/texlive/src/ where you can find texlive.spec. The ideas
in this file should also work for tetex (the name of this file was
tetex.spec some time ago).

2.) Install context-minimals beside tetex3
Since I have no more time to maintain tetex or texlive spec files, I
use this option (only with texlive instead of tetex). All my context stuff
is now in /opt/context and updated according to
http://wiki.contextgarden.net/ConTeXt_Minimals
Perhaps there are no openbsd binaries in this distribution, but it should
be easy to add support for openbsd in
http://svn.contextgarden.net/minimals-src/build-binaries/build-binaries.sh

ok, i have a lot of catching up to do because of the enormous
volume of mail hitting this list, but let me ask this. all i want

as a user i don't mind what's in the background, perl, shell, ruby

everything that is needed to process the .tex file.

is there something like that? if not, will be? :]

spaces are always tricky ... in mkiv just omit the spaces (internally
all font names are stripped from spaces and special characters and
treated lowercase), so Abc Def-GhI becomes abcdefghi anyway
