Hello,

I have a book project that is being cut into two volumes (because it
is
too long and will be sold as a boxed set).

Each volume is presently a separate *product* in the project
structure.
I presently set the counters in the second volume using:

  [part] [2]

  [chapter] [5]

(I have multiple [5] parts in the project, and the first volume ends
with part 2 and chapter 5.)


1) Is this the right way to be handling this?

2) Any suggestions on how I can put a Table of Contents for the first
volume in the second volume?

Bruce,

Did something of the sort a while back: redefined the index command to 
something short, in capitals; then adjusted the syntax highlighting to pick up 
the code. This was for emacs + auctex, so it was just a case of adjusting one 
of the stock auctex files. I think Scite may let one do something similar.

My own fault for not thinking head :-) but I have a largeish text with a lot of 
\index{...} entries. To make life easier for the proofreader I would like to 
temporarily redefine \index to wrap it or replace it with something that will 
highlight indexed items in the text where they occur, e.g. change their colour.

I could do this with a global find and replace (across many files) to replace 
\index with \MyIndex, say, and then define a \MyIndex that understands the 
various parameter options but this is a hassle. Before I do this, is there 
anything already pre-built?

The ultimate aim is to enable a proofreader to see each indexed term where it 
appears in order to judge whether the term deserves to be in the index at all. 
(Working backwards from the index itself is possible but clicking a page 
number, trying to find the term on the page, then reading the context to make a 
decision is quite hard work - much easier to read through and deal with the 
terms as they appear.)

Using

\startplacefigure[title={complete caption}, list={description in the

you can have different caption texts, like for titles.

I often use \ininner{\rotate[location=fit]{Copyright notice}}, but
it’s

[NTG-context] LMTX | (.\) at end of line causes fatal error

Something I've noticed for a little while now, although it may be
long standing, I'm not sure. If one ends some of the lines in
the input files with a full stop (.) and a back slash (\) then LMTX
will fail to compile with a fatal error. The only way to recover is
to go through each of the files and ensure that no line ends with
(.\).

Is this a bug?

for long i time tried to keep up with the changes in the lpef plugin
but 
it kept changing to i quit using it; in the zip below is a version of 
scite with a built in lpeg ... i have adapted teh lexers but need to 
have a look at them again (i now go via some scite interfaces but

sometimes have side effects i need to nail down more).

does not work with SciTE 5.1.6+

The latest version that seems to be working is SciTE 5.1.5.

Recently when we were troubled by incorrect rendering of certain
conjuncts in 
malayalam, Hans added a new font-feature. More below*, but first some

In case there are issues, I have seen that the following approach
usually 
yields best result in debugging:
 • try to switch between the -one and -two version of the features
(i.e. use 
the v1 or v2 OTF script tag): some fonts may have some rules defined
only under 
one of the script tags. (I am not an expert in fonts but with my
testing of 
free fonts I have seen this). 
 • if that does not fix (the particular issue), revert to a working
feature and 
then set the indic feature as indic={movematra=default,conjuncts=quit}
to see

 issues usually have a pattern (across languages/scripts so some hacks
might 
work)

For conjuncts, 'mixed' and 'auto' are synonymous. Setting
conjuncts=mixed 
ensures that for some fonts conjuncts with the reph forms are rendered
correctly. (This was tested with a relatively new font in malayalam
using the 
mlm2 script tag).

For problematic fonts, if one can identify which conjuncts work under
which 
script tag and/or with what settings for indic, then, using ConTeXt
feature 
sets one can easily fix rendering in documents by doing, for instance
 {\feature[=][devanagari-two] …}, and/or
 {\feature[=][devanagari-one] …} accordingly

Now, a brief note on the transliterations macros. First, one specifies
that 
indic transliteration is desired with:
\usetransliteration[indic]

Now, one can transliterate sanskrit to and from various forms by using

where scheme is one of:
    • iast to deva
    • deva to iast
    • deva to mlym
which are respectively the following schemes :
    • IAST → Devanagari
    • Devanagari → IAST
    • Devanagari → Malayalam
More schemes will be added in the near future for various other indic
scripts 
as well. Currently there is only support for sanskrit language, which
we can 
extend to other languages (wherever the script allows).

Additionally, there is also 
\definetransliteration[…][…]
which can be used to define a specific transliteration block.

So, one just sets vector accordingly to get the desired
transliteration block.

Unfortunately some fonts don't work properly in ConTeXt. Noto Sans
Devanagari 
is one of them. The accompanying serif font (Noto Serif Devanagari)
works just 
fine (mostly, there are problems with that as well). 

In this specific case, there does not seem to be any fix (at least
that I could 
find).

I am trying to test many fonts and come up with a list of fonts which
work, 
partially work, don't work, etc. and fixes wherever possible.

I've been wondering if there is some syntax that one can use in:

\placetable or \placefigure

to control the Table of Figure Title appearing in:

\completelistoftables and \completelistoffigures


At the moment one can do this for the output of:

\completecontent

with something such as the following:

\startsection[title={Title in body},list={Title in contents}]


Such a thing would be *extremely* useful for a current 
publication. :)

For a good number of years now I've been using P4D and 
P4V from Perforce for version control. As it happens it, one 
is able to control what ends up in the repository and what
is left out, thankfully. Regardless, this should be very helpful
Hans. It'll be great to be able to quickly scan the project files
that matter, knowing that all the clutter is safely kept somewhere
else. So thanks for this.

This time the update has, appart from already mentioned mp fixes and 
additions, another new feature.

In context the first line can be used to control some aspects of the run 
and runpath (also as command line switch) will process the document 
elsewhere. The main reason for this feature is that when you have files 
in for instance a git repository (or export), you don't want the run 
path to be polluted by temporary files because everything can end up in 
the repository when it gets updates (after all these years I don't 
expect this pollution issue to be solved; svn is more explicit in what 
goes in).

So, for instance the manuals are on clean paths (on my machine i (am) 
put(ting) experiments, todo's etc under an ignored /private subpath 
which means that styles can still be found if needed).

The texruns: prefix resolves to an environment variable with the same 
name or when not set, to the temp directory. The temp: and home: 
prefixes resolve (as usual) to their counterparts (prefixes are a very 
old mkii mechanism but still useful).

When not present a path will be created, when no chdir is possible the 
run aborts.

There are probably some cases when resources are not found but that will 
be dealt with in due time. I might also update the underlying mechanisms 
at some point.

I already adapted some manuals so that means that when users process 
these themselves they will not see the runfiles fly to the temp path 
unless 'texruns' is configured. So be it.

I just tested \pagereference in a simple example and had no problem
to 
get

the page numbers from the other document. Without a minimal example

there is no way to tell what's missing in your document.

I just tested \pagereference in a simple example and had no problem
to

separately (though within the same project). Some of the papers in
the second volume make cross references to papers in the first.
Now this is working well so long as the reference is to the details
associated with, say, a chapter, using \about, \in, and \at. Its
doesn't
seem to work though with \pagereference: no page number appears
in the PDF whatsoever. I have  been following the material here:

Then we can deprecate the short ones (keep them a low profile, with
permission to overload). After all, I don't expect someone who needs
lots of them to use these commands, so more verbose is better then.
Aas I already mentioned, in bib files they are treated differently
already.
The low level helper is \chr, that can be used as
\chr {à} \chr {á} \chr {ä}\chr {`a} \chr {'a} \chr {"a}\chr {a
acute} \chr {a grave} \chr {a umlaut}\chr {aacute}  \chr
{agrave}  \chr {aumlaut}
(I can add more of the verbose, like {cyrillic a} if really needed. It
means that we can declare \eacute etc also depricated (these verbose
names date from \MKII, encoding neutral labels, utf handling,
remapping to backend encodings etc but we don't need that and I'm not
sure if anyone ever used those long names. Again, depricated, not
removed (yet).)
Then there is the question what to do with \AE and \ij and such ...
these were used to enforce specific ligatures into a file assuming
that f ont has them but nowadays that's the job of a font handler
(script language control). We can keep them but assume them legacy.
They normally don't belong in input. (Being Dutch I actually never
used \IJ or \ij).
Now, we can assume that when your languages needs characters with
accents that you use a font that has them. In MKIV and LMTX one
canenable a checker
\enabletrackers[fonts.missing]\enabletrackers[fonts.missing=replace]\e

but in LMTX it's upgraded with more clever replacements (Jano will
document that + more about checking missing stuff in the wiki).
So, in LMTX we have more options (maybe I'll backport that to MKIV)

characters  \enabletrackers[fonts.missing=remove]\replacemissingcharac
ters
\enabletrackers[fonts.missing=replace]\handlemissingcharacters  \enabl
etrackers[fonts.missing={decompose,replace}]
the last one will inject decomposed characters into the list when font
lacks the real thing. The replacements visualize similar to MKIV but
adapt to the style.

I've found that recent versions of LMTX seem to have broken table and
figure floats using rotation. Lmtx-20210118 with for example:

\placetable[here,90]

results in the trashing of all subsequent body text in the PDF.

This can be corrected with something such as:

\placetable[here] ...

\framed[orientation=90]

(although one looses the ability to rotate the title of the table).

The last really stable version of LMTX, which I'm finding that I'm 
constantly returning to as my default, is lmtx-20200920.

This error has been occurring for some time now, and unfortunately,
while I would like to keep up the recent releases of LMTX, it is
essential that I should be able to rotate tables and images. Does
anyone know of a fix.

Just to clarify. The new \hyphenateddigits means that witha couple of
tightly packed columns of footnotes it is nowpossible to break a
textual reference such as this acrosstwo lines.

In the recent versions of LMTX I've been having trouble with finding
my own typescriptfile -- type-sourceserifpro.tex (attached)

This file lives in the working directory of all of the other project
files,
and is also here:

~/lmtx-20201218/tex/texmf-fonts/tex/context/user/type-
sourceserifpro.tex

This file is found and executes correctly with:

lmtx-20200920

but fails with:

lmtx-20201218:

fonts   > typescripts > unknown library 'sourceserifpro'

(Latin Modern is substituted for Adobe's Source Serif Pro.)


My setups haven't changed and are:

\usetypescriptfile[sourceserifpro]

\setupbodyfont[sourceserifpro,11pt]

I noticed yesterday that paragraph indenting appears to have changed
between
LMTX 2020.11.17 & 11.19. Usually the first paragraph after a section
heading
does not indent, as it does with all subsequent paragraphs. With 11.19
the first
paragraph does have an indent. I've had to revert to 11.17.

It’s not obvious in https://wiki.contextgarden.net/Table_of_Contents
but you need
\setuplist[subsection][margin=2cm]  etc.

sure but actually it can be that users have (or find) javascript code 
someplace that can help them do something without conversion (and 
introducing errors) ... of course assuming proper ecmascript

the interface in lmtx provides a way to pipe into tex (with catcode 
support) as well as access to files in the tex ecosystem (controlled)
so 
it just provides the few interfaces needed on top of a basic engine 
conforming the 'standard'

Hi,

The last few days there have been reports about garbled files in the 
lmtx installation so I did some test oinon a linux machine and indeed 
there was some issue (I'm not sure what causes it). Anyway, I made
new 
zips so maybe one needs to reinstall (using the installer zip). It 
installs okay on wsl so probably also on other linuxes.

This version (luametatex 2.03.3) has (again) a little smaller mem 
footprint as I still want it all to perforem ok on relative small 
devices or vm's and as side effect a bit smaller format file, not
that 
that matters much (compared to general mem usage). There is not much
to 
gain anyway, in terms of memory usage and performance so it's more an 
occasional challenge than a neccessity I guess.

Anyway, hopefully nothing got broken. Peter Rolf and I are updating
some 
of the pdf validation related stuff (additional formats), so that can
be 
in flux.

Yes, the Linux install fails as well. I have just tried another. The
output of context --make is attached.

During the install the ascii *.lua files in the following directory --
initially from context-linux-64.zip-- are overwritten by what look
like binaries:

Hi Dalyoung,

I installed MacOS 10.15 Catalina on a partition of my Mac and tried to
install LuaMetaTeX there. I did not succeed … 
Indeed I had to disable completely the Gatekeeper from the Terminal by
issuing the command

sudo spctl --master-disable

(which, one can re-enable again by saying sudo spctl --master-enable).
But the problem is that  after issuing the command

sh install.sh

the three files mtx-install.lua, mtxrun.lua, mtxrun, which are in

/context-osx-64/bin/

get overwritten and are modified for some unknown reasons: in
particular the two lua files become complete garbage… while in MacOS
10.14 these files are unchanged.
So in fact the installation process cannot continue in MacOS 10.15,
and even though the directories in 

/context-osx-64/tex/

are created, the binaries and the formats are not there. I guess other
people on the list may have installed LuaMetaTeX under MacOS 10.15 and
they can help us understand what is going on. 

Later in the day I'll try to understand how to bypass the security
assessments (and the overwrite of the above three files) of MacOS
10.15, and let you know if I find a solution.

special characters?

have found that the APA code base seems to have changed a little.


Previously (BibTeX ---> ConTeXt output):

but now I'm getting:

Is this possible instead?

Thank you for suggesting this Alan. I've `corrected' the rendering --
SGam.po.pa to sGam.po.pa -- with this:

\setupbtx[apa:list:title:book][command=]

I'm not sure. That said, XeTeX can render them using Latin Modern Roman
and Math so they are available.

 their heart could write a short and simple script for just seven
