Sorry Hans, I don't understand what I'm supposed to do with that command.
Anyway, I have found another way around the problem. I have removed the
typescript and font commands for Arial and replaced them with:

\setupbodyfont[helvetica, 10pt]

which is indistinguishable from Arial for 99% of the population, and it has
the advantage that all the styles are already defined, including \tt.

[NTG-context] teletype style in type-win.mkiv

2011-06-02 Thread Richard Stephens
Hello all,

I'm afraid I've never spent the time to understand fonts properly, I just
make do with the defaults most of the time. Now, however, I am being forced
to use company default fonts for some documents. I have got as far as using
the following commands to setup my body font:

\usetypescriptfile[type-win]
\usetypescript[arial]
\setupbodyfont[arial, 10pt]

But the teletype style now has no effect: e.g. using {\tt teletype} gives
the same font as normal, and \showbodyfont reveals the same.

I've tried making sense of the type-win.mkiv file but it's beyond me! Any
suggestions how to get \tt to use Courier New, for instance?

Thanks,

Richard

[NTG-context] \SetTableToWidth undefined?

2010-11-30 Thread Richard Stephens
Hello all,

I have just noticed that \SetTableToWidth does not work in MKIV.
Simple example below.

\starttext
\SetTableToWidth{8cm}
\starttable[|l|l|]
\NC One \NC Two \NC\SR
\NC Three \NC Four \NC\LR
\stoptable
\stoptext

I get the error:

! Undefined control sequence.
l.3 \SetTableToWidth
 {8cm}

It does work in MKII and also works if you use \tableSetTableToWidth.

Have I missed something, is something wrong or is it just me?

Thanks,

Firewall. I am protected by two company firewalls (so I'm told). There
is no prospect of opening ports that are currently blocked and
'tunnelling' or whatever it's called would be seen as a contavention
of company rules!

I guess I'll carry on using my own update method then: I download
cont-tmf.zip (from http://www.pragma-ade.com/download-2.htm) then hunt
for new binaries in the directory tree at
http://minimals.contextgarden.net/. It's a pain but it seems to work
at the moment. It would be nice if there were a .zip file that
contained the latest binaries to go into texmf-mswin/bin. But perhaps
that would open up another can of worms!?
Perhaps now that MKIV has most features working I could just update
with the stable releases rather than the betas.

Thanks for your help.

[NTG-context] ConTeXt on MikTeX

2010-11-24 Thread Richard Stephens
Hello all,

As I cannot use rsynch to update ConTeXt, I was wondering if the
MikTeX distribution might provide an alternative route to getting
updates. There are questions:
1) The Wiki page on MikTeX (http://wiki.contextgarden.net/MikTeX)
still says it's broken. I presume this is out of date?
2) Does MKIV work in MikTeX?
3) How often will the MikTeX distribution be updated with a new
ConTeXt? I guess I only need updating a couple of times a year, now
that MKIV is looking pretty good.
4) Does TeXworks (which is part of MikTeX distribution) work with ConTeXt?
5) Any opinions or advice?

Thanks,

Richard

Re: [NTG-context] Multi-line labels in MetaPost MKIV

2010-07-28 Thread Richard Stephens
 What is the recommended method for creating multi-line labels in MetaPost
 in MKIV, please?
 I have the following code:

 \definetextext[mplabel]{\framed[frame=off,align=middle]}
 \starttext
 \startMPpage
 input mp-tool;

 draw fullcircle scaled 5cm;
 label(\sometxt[mplabel]{One\\Two}, (0,0));
 \stopMPpage
 \stoptext

 which gives a line feed between One and Two using MKII, but no line feed
 in MKIV.

>>> \defineframed[mplabel][frame=off,align=middle]

>>> \starttext

>>> draw fullcircle scaled 5cm ;
>>> label(textext("\mplabel{One\\Two}"),origin)) ;
>>> \stopMPpage

Thanks Hans, that works.
Will this change be added to the next release, or do I have to
re-apply it manually?

Is \sometxt not recommended now? Should I be using textext throughout?

At the above address, there is a .zip file called mswin.zip which
appears to contain binaries etc (dated 28-May-2010). Plus another one
called mswincontext.zip which presumably contains everything else
(dated 17-April-2008). How would I make use of these to install the
full distribution?

What would be really nice is a .zip file containing EVERYTHING needed
to install ConTeXt for the latest stable release
AND another .zip (produced, say, once a month) with the changes since
the stable release!
Or failing that, just a big .zip file with everything in it once a month or so.
I can dream!

[NTG-context] Minimals without rsync - again?

2010-07-28 Thread Richard Stephens
Hi all,

On the wiki at http://wiki.contextgarden.net/ConTeXt_Minimals/FAQ is says:

"Blocked Firewall port
You are most probably behind a firewall. Make sure that port 873 is
open. If you cannot make any changes yourself and if your admin
objects, you probably won't be able to use rsync for the
distribution."

Yes, I am behind a firewall. No, port 873 is not open. No, I cannot
make any changes, and yes, my admin objects :-(
So what's the alternative to using rsync? I used to use the zip file
at http://www.pragma-ade.com/download-4.htm but that doesn't exist any
more!

I've now managed to screw up my MKIV installation somehow, so I
desperately need some way of getting the beta release re-installed
without rsync.

Help!!

The trend that I have noticed (and which trips off the tongue most easily
for British english-speakers) is to use the plural 'they' in place of the
singular pronoun 'he' or 'she'. This avoids having to choose! For purists,
it rankles, but then we have to accept that the language will change.
Personally, for serious writing, I use the rather cumbersome, but
grammatically correct, 'he or she'. I personally don't like 'he/she'. The
use of 'one' as a pronoun in British english is pretty much dead and sounds
very stilted to us - only the Queen and old school masters still use it!
Using 'it' is not an option.

Is there a way I can narrow down what and where the problem is? At the

I've tried removing some of the \cite commands recently added, but to no

Any help would be much appreciated.

[NTG-context] \definecolumnsethsize

2010-07-07 Thread Richard Stephens
I'm using columnsets for a paper with 2 columns and copied an examples from
the wiki and the columnsets documentation to give the following commands:

\definecolumnset[colset][n=2]
\setupcolumnset[colset][2][distance=5mm]
\definecolumnsethsize{colset}{1}{1}\One
\definecolumnsethsize{colset}{1}{2}\Two
...
\placefigure[btlr][fig:ex1]{caption1}{\externalfigure[example1][width=\One]}
% One column figure
\placefigure[btlr][fig:ex2]{caption1}{\externalfigure[example2][width=\Two]}
% Two column figure

The figures appear okay, but they are quite a bit smaller than the textwidth
of the columns. Can someone explain the workings of \definecolumnsethsize?
I've looked at the code and it means nothing to me! The columnsets document
only gives examples, no definition.

Thanks verily,

Hi all,

The default figure caption looks like:
"Figure 1  User caption". How do I change this to "Fig.
1  User caption", i.e. change "Figure" to "Fig."?
I've looked for an example but I cannot
work it out.

Thanks,

I'm afraid this suggestion ALMOST works---it restarts
the numbering in each new section, but it
does not prefix the numbers with the section number,
so my previous example gives two Figure 1's.

There is code for \setupcaptions in strc-flt.mkiv
which has 'way' commented out.

[NTG-context] MKIV numbering

2010-05-14 Thread richard . stephens

Hello,

Does anyone else  have the following
problems with numbering for figures, equations etc in MKIV

1. Using \setupnumbering[way=bysection]
does not work
2. The colour of references to figures
etc is wrong.

The example below illustrates the problems.
Try compiling in MKII and MKIV and note the differences.

\setupcolors[state=start]
\setupinteraction[state=start,color=darkgreen,style=normal]
\setupnumbering[way=bysection]
\startuseMPgraphic{Circle}
        draw
fullcircle scaled 2cm;
\stopuseMPgraphic

\starttext
\section{First section}
See \in{Figure}[fig:Circle].
\placefigure[here][fig:Circle]{A circle}{\useMPgraphic{Circle}}

\placeformula[eq:pythag]
\startformula
        c^2
= a^2 + b^2
\stopformula

\section{Second section}
See \in{Figure}[fig:Circle] on \at{page}[fig:Circle].
See \in{equation}[eq:pythag] for Pythagoras.
\placefigure[here][fig:Circle2]{Another
circle}
        {\startMPcode

      draw fullcircle scaled 1cm;
        \stopMPcode}
\stoptext

This is fantastic news, and it looks great! Thanks
Patrick.

If the 'volunteers' are REALLY keen they could also
change examples so that they have the following form:

 Some example code for the command in question.

which then outputs both the raw code and the formatted
output separated by the word "yields". It makes examples so much
more useful.

Best regards

There's another feature that would be REALLY useful
in texshow-web: the ability to show the output from code, in the same way
that the Wiki shows the output from code between and .

Is this a possibility?

P.S. There is an error in cont-en.xml for the command
"lohi": the keyword is shown as "low" when it should
be "left".

I am absolutely gobsmacked (astounded, astonished)
at some of the comments on this and other threads!
"ConTeXt - an Excursion" and "ConTeXt
the Manual" together are wonderful. I still consult them at least
once a week
after 4 year's use. If you actually tried the examples
in the former, rather than just reading them, you
would be an expert user within 2 days!

It would be nice to think that the community could
construct documentation, but good, coherent documentation
is much harder to produce than good code! It works
for collections of small articles (WikiPedia etc), but
I've never seen a good book written by a community.

While it would be nice to have an updated "ConTeXt
the Manual", in my humble opinion the biggest hole
in the documentation is a reference for each command.
Texshow-web should fill this gap and this is
where the community CAN contribute, and where the
mechanism already exists. And because it's made up of
small articles it could work. When I learn about a
command I try to fill in a few words in
texshow-web. If everyone added a few words each time
they learn a new command, we would soon have
a fantastic reference source.

Richard

P.S. One request for improvement to texshow-web: the
source-file for each command is included
in cont-en.xml, could this be displayed on the command
web-page? It would make it easier to
find the source if you need to.

[NTG-context] texshow-web parameters

2009-11-23 Thread richard . stephens

Hello,

On the texshow-web Help page it says
that the page for a specific command can be invoked using a parameter for
the url, e.g. "http://texshow.contextgarden.net/about".
I have tried this but all I get is a page saying "Error
message: Cannot recognize URL."

I have tried with a space before the
command and without a space. Is this functionality broken or am I doing
something wrong?

Thanks,

Richard

After some experiments, I think the problem is that
Notepad++ is ignoring the case of the commands when searching for calltips.
By re-sorting the list I was able to get calltips to work. However, with
this new sorting the auto-complete no longer works! This is definitely
one for the Notepad++ developers.

Idris,

Thank-you for your response. I am using Npp 5.5.1
and the calltips for C++ work okay. I saw the startitemize tip in the context.xml
file and tried it out but it didn't work. I was hoping to complete just
a few calltips for commands that I use rarely enough not to remember the
parameters but often enough to make looking them up annoying! Calltips
for all commands would be a wonderful thing!

Anyway, if it used to work for you, perhaps I should
address the Notepad++ community instead.

Thanks again for your help.

[NTG-context] Notepad++ calltips

2009-11-18 Thread richard . stephens

Hello everyone,

Does anyone use Notepad++ with the function
"calltips" feature?  Checking the context.xml definition
file, there are calltips defined for \startitemize, but they never appear
when I'm typing, even though the auto-completion works fine.

Trying a .cpp file gives calltips okay,
so it seems to be something to do with the Context implementation.

Can anyone help?

Thanks,

Richard

[NTG-context] Wiki pages for Scite and Notepad++

2009-11-11 Thread richard . stephens

Dear All,

I have recently added two new pages
to the Wiki, one for Scite (http://wiki.contextgarden.net/Scite
) and one for Notepad++ (http://wiki.contextgarden.net/Notepad%2B%2B)

I have used words plagiarised from release notes and the
mailing list, plus some of my own experiences of trying to get them to
work.

It would be good if someone knowledgeable
could review what I've put and straighten out any inaccuracies.

Regards,

Richard

[NTG-context] Exporting figures

2009-08-14 Thread richard . stephens

Hello again,

I have generated some ConTeXt documents
with figures using MetaPost. The figures
have labels which use \sometxt{}. Everything
works beautifully!
Now I have an unenlightened customer
(he does not use ConTeXt) who wants to import my figures into his documents.
He can accept eps or pdf files or any
of the common graphics formats (png, gif, even svg I think).
I have tried to generate the figures
as standalone files in two ways:

1) I compiled the metapost to a PS file
using "texexec --mptex file.mp". Unfortunately, the resulting
figure does not have any labels, presumably
because it isn't accessing TeX to generate them?

2) Inserted \starttext ... \stoptext
around the metapost code and used ConTeXt to generate a PDF
document. This is great except that
each figure covers a full page.

Is there any way of sharing my figures
with the unenlightened masses?

Thanks,

Richard

For the record, after reading Mojca's MyWay, and noting
that textext is deprecated
except in certain circumstances, I have ended up with
the following:

\definetextext[mplabel]{\framed[frame=off,align=right,width=fit]}
\startMPcode
label.rt(\sometxt[mplabel]{One\\Two},origin);
\stopMPcode

Thanks everyone.

Thank-you for a very elegant solution, Wolfgang, unfortunately
I get an error:

! Argument of \dododefinecolor has an extra }.

I have fixed this by using:

label.rt(textext("\framed[frame=off,align=right]{One\\Two}"),origin);

which works okay. It's not as elegant but as the code
is generated
automatically it does not require any more typing
on my part!

Thanks again.

[NTG-context] Lots of problems in mkiv

2009-06-18 Thread richard . stephens

I've recently started using mkiv because of the fonts, but I have found
lots of things that don't work.
The trouble is, I don't know if it's just me, or whether I need to go back
to mkii until things settle down.

Can someone, PLEASE, tell me if they get any of the following problems with
mkiv (I've included code snippets):
Everything below works perfectly in mkii.

1) References to equations appear as '??' in the final document

\placeformula[eq:pythag]
\startformula
a^2 = b^2 + c^2
\stopformula
Pythagoras proposed \in{equation}[eq:pythag].

2) References to footnotes appear as '??' inside
\startlocalfootnotes...\stoplocalfootnotes

\startlocalfootnotes
This has a note.\footnote[fn]{Footnote.}
See note \note[fn].
\stoplocalfootnotes

3) References to sections are repeated (e.g. reference to section 1 appears
as '11' or ref to section 1.1 appears as '1.11.1')

\section[sec:one]{Section one}
It was in \in{section}[sec:one].

4) \digits command falls over at periods or commas with "\textfont1 is
undefined (character 58)."

\digits{1.6}

5) \infull command does not work for abbreviations: falls over with
"Missing } inserted."

\abbreviation {KF} {Kalman filter}
Rudolph Kalman invented the \infull{KF}.

Please help!!

[NTG-context] Reference to equation fails

\stopformula

I need all section heads to be in full-size capitals, so I tried:

\setuphead[section][textcommand=\uppercase]

\starttext
\section{New section}
\input knuth
\stoptext

But I still get lowercase.
Using 'textcommand=\cap' gives me small capitals, but I want full-size
capitals.
Is there a way to get what I want?

Thanks,

Richard

[NTG-context] Page number updates

2009-06-04 Thread richard . stephens

Hello again,

I want to set up a header which stretches across the margins as well as the
text area, so I've defined a layer for use as a background, as follows:

\setuplayout[backspace=3.5cm,leftmargin=0.5cm,leftmargindistance=1.0cm]
\definelayer[pagenumber][width=3cm,height=3cm]
\startsetups layer
\setlayer[pagenumber]{Page \pagenumber}
\stopsetups
\setupbackgrounds[header][leftmargin][setups=layer,background=pagenumber]

\starttext
\dorecurse{4}{\page[empty]}
\stoptext

Unfortunately, the page numbers are all '1'.

If I change the line:

\setupbackgrounds[header][leftmargin][setups=layer,background=pagenumber]

to

\setupbackgrounds[page][setups=layer,background=pagenumber]

the page numbering works, so I can get what I want by adjusting the offsets
of the layer.
My question is: should the first one work?

Regards,

Richard

I updated the bib module and it works.

[NTG-context] usemodule[bib] upsets abbreviations

2009-06-03 Thread richard . stephens

Using today's beta (2009-06-03), my abbreviations seem to be upset by the
\usemodule[bib] command.
Here is a simple test case in which the first line is okay, but the second
line, with ! after the abbreviation, fails.

\enableregime[il1]
\abbreviation {KF} {Kalman filter}
\usemodule[bib]

\starttext
Once upon a time, Rudolph Kalman invented the \KF.

Once upon a time, Rudolph Kalman invented the \KF!
\stoptext

Best regards,

Richard

P.S. If I don't put the \enableregime in I get a failure of the bib module,
not sure why.

I used Emacs when I was young and idealistic, but over the years all those
keyboard commands have been beaten out of me and it's beyond me now ;-)
I did try it again recently in a flood of nostalgia, but I just couldn't
get to grips with it again.

Scite is okay, and hitting F7 to build a document is handy. It's missing a
few features, though, which would make it great e.g. a user-configurable
toolbar, so that we could add toolbar icons for ConTeXt commands (I'm
always forgetting the order of options and a button which inserted a
\placefigure command with reminders would be fantastic).

Anyway, that's a bit off topic.

Richard

I was trying various things and downloaded the beta version of cont-tmf.zip
(from http://www.pragma-ade.com/download-2.htm ) instead of the current
version and it all works, hooray!
Thank-you, everyone, for your help. I'm so pleased to be able to use MKIV

All I've got to do now is get Scite working again :-(

[NTG-context] Installation problem (was Updates without rsync)

2009-06-01 Thread richard . stephens

Hello everyone,

I wanted to get a clean, up-to-date installation of Context on Windows
(without using rsync), so started from scratch as follows:

1. Downloaded
http://www.pragma-ade.com/context/install/minimals-snapshot-mswin.zip
2. Unzipped to C:\Tools\context
3. Renamed C:\Tools\context\texmf-context to texmf-context-old
4. Downloaded cont-tmf.zip and unzipped contents to
c:\Tools\context\texmf-context
3. From command window, ran:
  cd \Tools\context
  setuptex      mktexlsr      luatools --generate      luatools
--selfupdate      mtxrun   --selfupdate      texexec --make      context
--make
4. To generate new pdf, ran:      context testdoc.tex

Everything seemed to execute without errors until the last step which
returned:

MtxRun | loading configuration for C:/Tools/context/texmf/web2c from
C:/Tools/context/texmf-cache/luatex-cache/context/b7bcb6722e1fe509b85ff004c33e8274/trees/90e2367b37b32bcc25e442581c9e72e2
MtxRun | run 1: luatex
--fmt="C:/Tools/context/texmf-cache/luatex-cache/context/b7bcb6722e1fe509b85ff004c33e8274/formats/cont-en"

--lua="C:/Tools/context/texmf-cache/luatex-cache/context/b7bcb6722e1fe509b85ff004c33e8274/formats/cont-en.lua"
 "./testdoc.tex"
luatex.exe:
C:/Tools/context/texmf-cache/luatex-cache/context/b7bcb6722e1fe509b85ff004c33e8274/formats/cont-en.fmt:
 No such file or directory
MtxRun | fatal error, code: 1

Looking at the source directory, a file "testdoc.top" has been created but
nothing else.

Can someone please point me towards a next step?

Thanks,

Richard

P.S. I tried copying cont-en.fmt from
"C:\Tools\context\texmf-mswin\web2c\luatex\pdftex" to the cache directory
but got "Fatal format file error, I'm stymied".

Thank-you very much for the above. Still a few problems though!

I have installed it to C:\tools\context. Everything goes well until
'mktexlsr' which returns:
 Cannot open C:/tools/context/texmf-project/ls-R to write.
 Cannot open C:/tools/context/texmf-fonts/ls-R to write.
 Cannot open C:/tools/context/texmf-extra/ls-R to write.
because the folders do not exist. So I've created empty folders just in
case and no more warnings!

Then all goes well until 'context --pdf myfile.tex' which returns:
 luatex.exe:
c:/tools/context/texmf-cache/tuatex-cache/b7bcb6722e1fe509b85ff004c33e8274/formats/cont-en.fmt:
 No such file or directory
 MtxRun | fatal error, code 1

and 'texexec --pdf myfile.tex' returns:
 c:\tools\context\texmf-mswin\bin\mtxrun.lua:8603: attempt to concatenate a
nil value

Any ideas?

Richard

I've got myself in a terrible mess now! I downloaded cont-tmf.zip and
unzipped the contents, then tried to follow Hans' instructions, i.e.:
>mktexlsr
>luatools --generate
>luatools --selfupdate
>mtxrun   --selfupdate
>texexec --make (for mkii)
>context --make (for mkiv)

Unfortunately, none of these commands runs without errors! SO, I decided to
reinstall from scratch. That's where my problems really started!

I searched around the Wiki and found lots of pages on installation, but
none of them seem quite right.
I looked at http://www.pragma-ade.com/general/manuals/minstall.pdf but it
looks old and does not seem to relate to the stuff I've downloaded.

>From various places, I think I need to do the following, but some details
are missing:

1. Install Ruby
2. Install Perl
3. Download cont-tmf.zip and unzip contents to
4. Set environment variables:
  OSFONTDIR = C:\WINDOWS\Fonts
  TEXMF = \scripts\context\stubs\mswin
  TEXMFCACHE = C:\TEMP
  TEXMFCNF = \web2c
  TEXMFOS = ??
  others
5. From command window, run installation scripts:
  mktexlsr
  luatools --generate
  luatools --selfupdate
  mtxrun   --selfupdate
  texexec --make (for mkii)
  context --make (for mkiv)
6. To generate new pdf run:
  context --pdf  myfile.tex
7. Anything else I've missed

Thanks to all,

Richard

[NTG-context] updates without rsync

2009-05-28 Thread richard . stephens

Gentlemen and Ladies,

I am using ConTeXt on a company Windows PC behind two firewalls with no
possibility of accessing or changing the firewalls. I've tried to update
using the minimals installation and rsync, but nothing gets through. What
is the recommended method of updating to the latest ConTeXt when rsync is
not an option?

The last time I tried, I downloaded cont-tmf.zip from
http://www.pragma-ade.com/download-1.htm and unzipped the contents to
overwrite everything in texmf-local. Is this still the best way?

Thanks.

Richard

I am using Windows, but the above did nothing - I ended up with the default
serif font.

The above changed the font to sans serif, but it doesn't look like
Helvetica (or Arial), it looks like the default sans serif font I get when
I put
\setupbodyfont[sans, 12pt]
on its own. Is this Latin Modern Sans?

[NTG-context] rsync error

2009-05-26 Thread richard . stephens

Hello,

I've been happily using a fairly old version of Context for a while
(ConTeXt ver: 2008.08.05 18:47 MKII fmt: 2008.11.14 int:
english/english) but decided that I perhaps ought to try to update to
something more modern. I tried to get the minimals for Windows by
downloading context-setup-mswin.zip, unzipping it to a new directory and
running first-setup.bat from a command window.
On the output in the command window, I get a number of rsync error
messages, the first of which is:
  rsync: failed to connect to contextgarden.net: Connection timed out
(116)
  rsync error: error in socket IO (code 10) at clientserver.c(122)
[receiver=3.0.2]
followed by lots of other warnings and errors and ultimately failure!

Any ideas?

Richard

[NTG-context] Available fonts and using them

2009-05-26 Thread richard . stephens

Hello all,

I have read many of the documents from the Wiki on using fonts, but I am
still not sure of one or two, probably obvious, things:

1) I'm being asked to use Arial font (not my choice!) and I see from
searching the context tree that there are .afm files, .tfm files and .map
files with 'arial' in the name. Does this mean I can use Arial out of the
box? If so, how? I've tried putting \setupbodyfont[arial,10pt] in my
environment file, but it does nothing. I've tried various other things as
well, copied but only half understood, from the other documents, but none
of them work either! I could follow the guide on installing a new font, but
if it's already available then I'd rather not!

2) How do I find out what fonts are available "out of the box" and how do I
invoke them?

Thanks,

Richard.

P.S. I'm using mkii -- one day I'll get around to setting up mkiv, but not
today!

Please, please, please can you (or someone) post on the wiki? I was looking
for a two-column layout for and IFAC conference which is very similar to
IEEE and I ended-up writing my own. I'm not a ConTeXt programmer so it was
all done in the document itself rather than setting environments etc, so
the source code looked awful. You example, and Wolfgang's, look much much
nicer and I cannot wait to try one of them out.

[NTG-context] New bibligraphy style

2008-11-19 Thread richard . stephens

Hello,

I am using the bib module and I want to redefine the display style for the
references. I have therefore created a new file "bibl-ris.tex" which I
have put in the same folder as bibl-apa.tex and the other existing ones.
In my environment file I have \setuppublications[alternative=ris].
Unfortunately, I get the error

file bibl-ris not found, unknown style ignored

Where should I put my bibl-ris file, or is there something else I need to
do before it can find my file?

Thanks.

[NTG-context] setuphead[section][style=cap] does not work

  \setuphead[section][style=cap]
I get an error as follows:

  \writesection

l.58 \section{Introduction}

Most other options seem to work, e.g. \setuphead[section][style=bold]
But \setuphead[section][style=\cap] has same problem as above.

I would try it in the "ConTeXt online" but that doesn't seem to be working.

Thanks,

Richard

P.S. How do I get a full stop after the section number?

[NTG-context] setupwhitespace

2008-11-13 Thread richard . stephens

Hello All,

I have a document in two columns and I need about 3mm vertical spacing
between paragraphs.

I've tried
  \setupwhitespace[small]
and
  \setupwhitespace[3mm]
but neither looks any different from \setupwhitespace[medium]or [big].

\setupwhitespace[none] gives no space.

There is a previous mailing in the archives which suggests that columns
don't use \setupwhitespace,
and there's a suggestion to use
  \defineblank[default][3mm]
but that doesn't seem to do anything either.

Any suggestions?

Regards,

Richard

Yes, I tried that, no difference. I presume that \hyphenatedfilename is
for use with filenames that already have hyphens in them?
Mine don't, but I want them to split. Perhaps splitting filenames is
frowned upon - if so, what is the best way to put them into documents?
Or perhaps I should use shorter filenames, but why should I compromise
readability? One example is "Transfer functions for PID and KF
controllers.xmcd"

Any ideas or comments?

[NTG-context] Keeping section head with index

2008-09-17 Thread richard . stephens

I want to put an index in its own section using

\section{Index}
\placeindex

I cannot use \completeindex because that starts a new chapter, not section.
Unfortunately, the header often gets separated from the index, being left
as the last line on the page.
I searched the mail archive and found a suggestion to use:

\setuphead[section][before={\testpage[4]}]

but this affects the vertical spacing of all section heads. Can anyone
either:
1) suggest an alternative way of keeping the section head with the index,
or
2) show me how to maintain the vertical spacing of headers when using the
above construct.

Thanks very much.

[NTG-context] texshow-web questions

2008-06-27 Thread richard . stephens
As an eternal optimist, I often refer to texshow-web in the hope that I
will find a function to help me, or a quick description of one that I
already know. In most cases I end up reverting to searching the manuals
and source code. I like the idea of texshow-web and I sometimes add notes
to entries if I find our something interesting. I would be quite happy to
add lots more, but I have some questions and suggestions for improvements
which I think would help.

1) Is there a way of adding a function to the list? or can it be updated
to include all the functions from the many macro packages included with
the context distribution. For example, in recent discussion group threads
I have found out about the \digits command and the \filename and
\hyphenatedfilename commands, none of which is in texshow-web. I would
have been happy to add notes on them if I could.

2) If I'm adding notes to a command, is it possible to add a URL link to a
particular page in one of the manuals? This would great for looking up a
command and going straight to the relevant entry in the relevant manual.

Regards,

Richard Stephens

[NTG-context] Type-setting filenames

2008-06-25 Thread richard . stephens
Hello,

Can anyone suggest a good way of type-setting filenames in ConTeXt? They
are usually long with few spaces and so often overhang the right-hand
margin and even fall off the edge of the page. They also often include
backslashes and underscores which I have to manually change - very
tedious.

Is there, for example, a command which handles some or all of my problems?

Thanks Taco. This does the job. All I need now is a version (\Monthshort
??) which puts the first
letter in uppercase, Jan , Feb, etc.

Thanks,

Richard

Thanks, Taco, that does the job for now.
Now all we need is something called \Monthshort which puts the
first letter in uppercase (Jan, Feb etc)!!!

Thanks,

[NTG-context] Date with three-letter month

2008-04-23 Thread richard . stephens
Hello All,

I have consulted the manuals and even the source (core-con.tex) but I
cannot find a way of getting a three-letter month using the \date command.
For example, I would like to display today's date as 23-Apr-08. This
gives a short display suitable for use in a margin, but avoids the
confusion of American (04-23-08) vs English (23-04-08) ordering when using
numbers.
Can anyone help?

Thanks.

Richard.

[NTG-context] --autopdf closes all documents

2008-04-16 Thread richard . stephens
I am using Scite on Windows to edit and build my documents. The most
annoying behaviour is that when I press F7 to build the document the
"texexec --pdf --autopdf" command that it executes closes ALL open pdf
documents. So that I have to keep re-opening everything :-(
Is there a way to build which just closes the document you are building
and leaves others open?

Thanks,

Richard Stephens

Wolfgang and Mojca,

Thank-you for your replies. They have enabled me to set up a little batch
file to make life easier when I want to generate a module document.

Thanks,

[NTG-context] Module documentation

2008-04-11 Thread richard . stephens
Hello all,

I have been using Context for a while now and have learnt a lot from the
manuals and wiki. I now want to start to use features that are not
documented.  On the wiki
(http://wiki.contextgarden.net/Official_ConTeXt_Documentation#ConTeXt_Sources)
I found the following command for producing a pdf output for a module:

texmfstart texexec --module kpse:core-tab.tex

which seems ideal for learning more. When I run the above command line it
creates a .ted file but then complains:

"I can't find the format file 'cont-en.fmt'!"

On Luigi Scarso's page
(http://wiki.contextgarden.net/User:Luigi.scarso/modules.pdf) he suggests
the following:

texexec --module --pdf core-tab.tex

but this returns no output at all, and no pdf.

I am working on Windows. I installed (this week) from the
context/install/mswincontext.zip on the Pragma site and normally build
from the Scite editor.

Can anyone suggest what I'm doing wrong?

Thanks.

Richard Stephens

Idris,

Thanks for your help.

I was able to change the foreground colours from the "User Define"
dialogue, but the background colour never changed. Thanks to your
pointer, I eventually found the global override for the background colour
under "Settings - Styler Configurator - Global Styles - Global Override".

Regards,

Richard

[NTG-context] Notepad++ colour settings

2007-11-02 Thread richard . stephens
I have downloaded the latest Notepad++ and ConTeXt settings as suggested
by Professor Hamid and I'm enjoying the experience of using them!

However, I do not really like the colour scheme and tried to alter the
background colours by editing "Application
Data/Notepad++/UserDefineLang.xml", shutting down Notepad++ and starting
up again (via Npp.bat), but no change. I also tried editing the "tex"
entry in "Application Data/Notepad++/stylers.xml", but no joy.
I tried going to menu item Settings - Style Configurator, but Context
isn't in the list of languages.

How can I alter the default colour settings for ConTeXt, please?

[NTG-context] Publication layouts

2007-09-25 Thread richard . stephens
Hello All,

I am using the bib module to generate references. The manual tells me
that the publication layouts are defined in the bibl-xxx files. I've got
several of these (bibl-ams.tex, bibl-apa.tex, bibl-num.tex etc) so how do
I tell which one is being used? (They all look the same to me!)

My supplementary question is: why doesn't the layout for a "book" type
print out the "edition" which I have defined in the publication
definition? I really want to change the layout of the "book" type to
include the edition immdiately after the title in the same font.

Thanks,

Richard Stephens
