[NTG-context] [installing lmtx on raspi400]

2021-05-13 Thread Floris van Manen

No desktop system is complete before having a proper lmtx installed ;-)

So with this OS version

$ uname -a
Linux rp400 5.10.17-v8+ #1414 SMP PREEMPT Fri Apr 30 13:23:25 BST 2021
aarch64 GNU/Linux

$ hostnamectl
   Static hostname: rp400
 Icon name: computer
  Operating System: Debian GNU/Linux 10 (buster)
Kernel: Linux 5.10.17-v8+
  Architecture: arm64

I downloaded
context-linux-aarch64.zip

unzipped it in the ~/context folder and ran the install.sh script

$ sudo sh ./install.sh

this gives an error:

/home/pi/context/bin/mtxrun: /lib/aarch64-linux-gnu/libm.so.6: version
`GLIBC_2.29' not found (required by /home/pi/context/bin/mtxrun)

Anyone with a hint ?

Thx
.Floris

Would it be possible to have a simple text file with the latest release
version (or date) tag in it? Next to the folder containing the actual
install script files? In that case it is easy to check that version tag
by comparing with the local copy and decide if a further download and

I assume the offset will position the line higher / lower .
But I see no effect.

I noticed that the same font test with the same lmtx versions on two

different rendering for the bold-italic.
That is only one produces the italics, the other doesn't.

I guess that is an example of true software magic,

A quick follow-up question.

Apparently the thin/bold/italics combination does not work.
I assume this is defined in a ibmplex-thin file somwhere.
If so, where is that file located?
What is the formula to derive ibmplex-thin from the underlying font files?

Thank you Wolfgang!

Your example works as intended.

I really get lost in the font definition files, as it is difficult to
understand which variable point to what other definition.

Is there a (simple) picture where the scripts are annotated with arrows,
to know which variable points to where? All the way back to the
mtxrun --script fonts --list --all --pattern=*
reply?
With all the options available it is a steep learning curve, but i hope
to be able to understand it at some point.

Thanks for the working solution.

The thing is that in print the CMYK will result in a fixed well defined
object: a physical print on paper. That is then the reference.
The complete chain of getting the information into print is well defined.

Compare that to the world of digital monitor viewing.
None is well defined, every monitor and platform has its own unknown
settings. How would you translate those into a printed document?

So my point was that it might be more convenient to first create the
publication for print, then let individual pdf browsers do their trick
in their own environment rendering the CMYK into RGB or whatever...

Unless it is fun to do both of course...

As in print the default is CMYK, why not start there.
The online might be RGB but all pdf viewers know how to deal with the
convertion from CMYK to RGB by themselves.

Why not draw the match as a picture first, then rotate and shift that

Also, if you use a local scale unit, it will be easier to stach the
matches together by merely applying a factor in match units.

[NTG-context] [HOWTO] spanning xtable cells

2020-01-30 Thread Floris van Manen
Does anyone knows a hint to get the stacked boxes to the correct size?
When usinig non-zero values for the options
spaceinbetween and/or columndistance
the cells of the xtable will not properly size when spanning over rows
and/or columns.

e.g.

\starttext

\startxtable[spaceinbetween=2mm, columndistance=2mm, corner=round]
  \startxtablebody
\startxrow
  \startxcell[ny=3] a1\stopxcell
  \startxcell[nx=2] a2/3  \stopxcell
  \startxcell[ny=3] a4\stopxcell
\stopxrow
\startxrow
  \startxcell b2 \stopxcell
  \startxcell b3 \stopxcell

[NTG-context] [question] \clipping some data from a pdf

2020-01-28 Thread Floris van Manen
Does anyone know?

Using the latest LMTX, i try to clip some portion of an external pdf
page, then resize that portion on top a new page.
i use the \clip command.

\starttext
\scale[width=100mm, hwight=100mm]{\clip[width=150mm, height=120mm,
hoffset=30mm, voffset=40mm]{\externalfigure[drawing.pdf]}} % incorrect

\scale[width=100mm, hwight=100mm]{\clip[width=150mm, height=120mm,
hoffset=30mm, voffset=136mm]{\externalfigure[drawing.pdf]}} % correct
\stoptext

I noticed that the voffset parameter *always* counts from the top/left
of the external source. Also if the source has its origin defined at the
lower/left corner.
Is that intentional?

It is confusing as when i place a rectangle on top of the clip i want to
extract from the source pdf, the x,w,w,h of that rectangle will not
match the parameter needed for the \clip command.

Or does there happen to be some snazzy tool out there to get the
coordinates of embedden images within a pdf?

Re: [NTG-context] Disappearing font feature

2019-12-22 Thread Floris van Manen
while trying to reproduce the example, i ran into some confusion myself...

I downloaded the fonts and installed them, then ran the script:
mtxrun --generate
mtxrun --script font --reload
context --make

verifying the existence of the font within the context region:
mtxrun --script fonts --list --all --name jost | cut -d" " -f1
shows the font appeared to be installed:
jostblack
jostblackitalic
jostbold
jostbolditalic
jostbook
jostbookitalic
josthairline
josthairlineitalic
jostheavy
jostitalic
jostlight
jostlightitalic
jostmedium
jostmediumitalic
jostnormal
jostregular
jostsemi
jostsemiitalic
jostthin
jostthinitalic

Now when i compile the example, lmtx will shows an issue with the font:

preloading latin modern fonts (second stage)
fonts > 'fallback modern-designsize rm 12pt' is loaded

and it will fallback to the default lmroman12-regular

I noticed that if i omit the context --make
and only run
mtxrun --generate
mtxrun --script font --reload

then compile the example, lmtx will show a different set of issues.
Most likely related...

That is indeed part of the issue: these platforms want You to move away
from the things that worked before and force you into closed areas
that'll make you depend on them. Its a pattern and a waste of energy
that could be better spend...
(but one cannot force people to their luck ;-)

There are many ways to solve specific problems.
One approach is to try avoid them in the first place ;-)
So you could consider moving away from MacOS (and Windows).
The problems you describe will become worse over time as most of those
systems are sugar coated surveillance platforms.
Make the move to Linux instead (now that you still can ;-)
FYI ConTeXt works great on Linux (Ubuntu / Pop-OS!)

[NTG-context] [updating LMTX]

2019-11-20 Thread Floris van Manen
when updating lmtx using the install.sh script, it seems to be unable to
find among others, the web2c . It looks everywhere, except the location
where it was put by that script in the first place.
/home/vm/data/context/tex/texmf/web2c

the $PATH contains
/home/vm/data/context/tex/texmf-linux-64/bin

I have no clue as how to interpret the log.
Should i define $TEXMF ?

Is the new syntax the default for the new context only?
e.g. the online documentation doesn't mention the separator=rule syntax.

Using the latest nov 14 version of context

\startcolumns[n=2,rule=on]

Has the syntax changed?

the cause might be outside context.
e.g. it might be that the layers/grouping are dropped by inkscape while
importing the pdf.

if i export the original svg as a pdf within inkscape, then re-import it
again, the layers/grouping are gone too.

not urgent, as many other paths exist ;-)

Nice !
It seems that it does not retains the grouping and layering in

[NTG-context] howto create labels with multiple lines ?

2019-10-10 Thread Floris van Manen
List,

In the metafun-p document, there is the example creating a clock with
labels placed at the dots.

pair destination ;
for whereto = 0 step 30 until 330 :
destination := dir(whereto) * 1.5cm ;
freedotlabel(decimal whereto, destination, origin) ;
drawarrow origin -- destination
withpen pencircle scaled .25mm withcolor .625 red ;
endfor ;

I cannot find any example as how to have a label with multiple lines.
like:

. one
  two

  two
. three
  four

Can someone point me to an example as how to do that?

Thanks

Is there a description available as how to include all font paths of the
underlaying system (ubuntu) into the font awareness of the new
luametatex system so they can be used?
Apparently there is a difference between the older (works) and the newer
(does not work) system.

I do a daily update of the context distribution using the command

This works well, but is rather verbose on the screen.
Would it be possible to have a less verbose version?
Or that the script could check some kind of a checksum before deciding
to download all data? Or download only part of the data (saving on some
carbon footprint ;-)

Re: [NTG-context] New logo proposal

2019-01-30 Thread Floris van Manen
If TeX and Context are about typesetting beautiful readable typography,
the logos as presented do not reflect that thought per se.
At first glance is is a pile of incoherent letters and colours.
e.g. difficult to read and memorise.

Could you elaborate on how ‘fun’ in colors is defined?
I see no coherency in the color palet.

Apparently i see different ;-)
How about a one color logo without any text?

As it is now, to me it is not so much of an improvement.
What are you trying to improve over the original?

(For the horizontal version, i’d prefer at least the correct letter values in

[NTG-context] \quad confusion

2018-12-27 Thread Floris van Manen
When trying to typeset, luatex kept complaining about incorrect parameters for
‘minus’.
There is no \minus command in the source however.
So it turns out that the combination of using \quad with ‘plus’, 'minus', and
some more make the error appear.
If i rewrite minus by {minus} the error does not show up either.

\starttext
\quad minuskel
\stoptext

Where do i go wrong?

Thanks.

[NTG-context] color check

2018-12-06 Thread Floris van Manen
while experimenting with the sample transparency color code

\definecolor [transparentred]  [r=1,t=.5,a=1]
\definecolor [transparentblue] [b=1,t=.5,a=1]
\definecolor [solidyellow]  [y=1,t=1,a=1]

\starttext

\startTEXpage
~This is some sample text that goes behind the rectangles\hskip-80mm
\blackrule[width=18mm,height=10mm,depth=10mm,color=solidyellow]\hskip-6mm
\blackrule[width=18mm,height=20mm,depth=1mm,color=transparentred]\hskip-6mm
\blackrule[width=18mm,height=10mm,depth=10mm,color=transparentblue]\hskip-6mm
\blackrule[width=18mm,height=20mm,depth=1mm,color=solidyellow]\hskip27mm
\stopTEXpage

\stoptext

i get the intended result.

if i change the yellow t value to .99
\definecolor [solidyellow]  [y=1,t=0.99,a=1]
some green layer pops up.

as this is all about software, there is a reason to this.
it cold be the OSX preview program too, of course.
can someone explain to me ?

path p ; p := fullsquare xscaled 10mm yscaled 12mm superellipsed .7 ;
path q ; q := fullsquare xscaled  9mm yscaled 11mm superellipsed .7 ;
q := q shifted (3mm, -2mm);
path r ; r := fullsquare xscaled  8mm yscaled 10mm superellipsed .7 ;
r := r shifted (0mm, -4mm);

fill p withcolor red ;
clip currentpicture to q ;
clip currentpicture to r ;

draw p ;
draw q ;
draw r ;
