I'm sorry, I forgot to uncomment a line, so there's actually a newer
version. By the time when you replied this has been fixed, but you
have probably synced earlier.

True. Now you can either use beta or current and it should give you
the latest functionality for both ConTeXt and LuaTeX (2009.07.17,
0.42.0).

Alpha has disappeared in the meantime.

I currently work with the contextgarden minimals.
Under the minimals, these are located at
tex/texmf-linux-64/bin/texlua
tex/texmf-linux-64/bin/texluac
on my machine.



just run first-setup.sh again.

release locally.  I would like to test the new alpha code but am a bit 
confused as to what exactly to install and how.


1. "on the website", is this indeed

currently lists as (not available)?

Should this be unzipped under /usr/local/context.alpha/tex/texmf-context
for example?


2. "no beta as mkiv needs the trunk version of luatex"
Does this mean
http://foundry.supelec.fr/gf/download/frsrelease/350/1332/luatex-
snapshot-0.42.0.tar.bz2
to be compiled and then somehow installed into the local tree.

I have installed the latest und greatest luatex version (0.42 - non dll 
version, 3x 3.8Mb...) and there are no problems with the mp graphic 
anymore. Taco, please make a dll version next time ;)

Can you try whether it works after you delete

(manually?)

  

i also checked the date of the mem-files and all were created newly.
anyhow, i gave it a try (you never know), but no surprise. same result 
after deleting the mem file.

It works with the beta, and the definition of \buildtextaccent in enco- 
ini.mkiv hasn't changed, so I'm at a loss what's going wrong here.

no, i simply added a final 'else' here. and no tests yet... still trying 
to understand the new code. i'm currently not in 'lua mode' and the 
temperatures are melting my brain... ;)

It works for me with a slightly older beta but not with alpha

[NTG-context] alpha release

Hi

I've put an alpha release on the website

- no beta as mkiv needs the trunk version of luatex
- a close to complete split in mkii/mkiv
- cleaned up mkiv code
- cleaned up mkiv backend (some pending issues)
- some speedups in mkiv
- a few fixes in mkii
- updated mkiv typescripts (more to come)
- fixes in mkiv structure

this version is not replicated on the context garden as we run older 
luatex binaries there (0.45 release by the end of this month)


you can unzip this file on your locla tree but best first rename the 
tex/context/base directory and make a fresh one as otherwise you end up 
with a weird mixture (due to the definitive split in .mkii/.mkiv there 
are not that many shared .tex files any more)


on the upcoming tex live there will be an updated mkii (either this one 
or the current beta which is basically a current for mkii) and an old 
mkiv (maybe the beta) or a new one but that one will not run then with 
the luatex on texlive as it is too old; this is no big deal as you can 
either use the minimals or use the new updater in the upcoming tex live 
to fetch newer binaries (norbert and mojca showed that trickery at 
bachotek 2009)


next on the mkiv agenda is an upgrade/rework of everything related to 
page building but it might as well be postponed till we have a bit more 
access (which will happen sometime after eurotex); the first priority is 
to get the new structure related code right but as idris is already 
publising books made by mkiv it's not that bad as it sounds.

there is a new alpha; this one reports (for certain features) if 
characters are missing in a font (which is the case in the reported 
farsi font)


there are two experimental tricks:

\checkcharactersinfont
\removemissingcharacters

these force an extra pass over the nodelist for checking (just after the 
 fallback pass)

Actually, in this case an example (including font) is a definate
requirement. I know the trunk is somewhat unstable, but it should
not be *that* unstable. Need the font(s) and input for proper testing, 
though.

more tests in the next days. I don't know if I was the only one  
experimenting with \installfontfeature, but would it be much of a  
hassle for you to just \let this command \relax in font-ini.mkiv so my  
collection of laboriously collected and hand-crafted typescripts won't  
break? (I know, I can do it in cont-sys.tex, but just in case there's  
somebody else out there in this cold cold world using this command).

The new version didn't work for me at first, but after the selfupdate of these

[NTG-context] alpha

Hi,

I uploaded a new alpha.

- partial rwewrite of the open type feature processor code which is also 
somewhat faster now (the most recent luatex bin is slower due to 
redundant ff code, so eventually we might geven ain a bit more speed)


- i will finish it when i run into fonts that i can use for testing

- i need to discuss some issues with idris with respect to arabic

- we might need to add some more detailed control (dus to interpretation 
 options of the otf stanmdard cq. specific fonts)


- i might make this an intermediate current (i still haven't finished 
the new structure code)

  if I want 'ch' be sorted between 'h' and 'i' so I do

It's a straight opentype encapsulation of the CMR type1 fonts from CTAN,
as far as I can tell. 

Getting LM in there is a function of $x$ Jonathan Kew's time, $y$ when
the next XeTeX release is, and $z$ the stability of LM's current release.

I'll try to measure $z$ with Jacko later today...

I sort of tried to say that XeTeX's vertical measurements are very
conservative (based on Apple's text system: it just doesn't want to let
lines get too close!).

Anyway, here are some adjusted logos that seem to save 80% of my
headaches in XeTeX's vertical spacing:

added to the previous mail: german has dedicated umlauts in latin modern, so 
what you ask for is dedidated (positioned lower) caron's and such; about the 
small circular thingie, it indeed looks a bit to spiny in latin modern, so that 
may be a bug (you may as well be one of the first czech tex users looking into 
latin modern -)

No kernings checking for now, just glyph drawing. I can ask LM author 
(Boguslaw Jackowski <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> ?) about his opinion. But the 
current tests (especially points 1,2,3) prevent me from the LM font 
usage in ConTeXt.

So, for me, there are two possibilities to fullfil my aesthetic feeling:
1) go back to the old (no lm) ConTeXt version, or
2) simple switch to set complete CS fonts environment (I use the next 
code, but it is just a quick hack:
  \loadmapfile[il2-ams-cmr.map]
  \definetypeface[computer-modern][il2] \setupbodyfont[modern]

I prefer the second variant. Can we find its solution?
a better solution is to use alternative glyphs, now, one problem is that there 
are no il2-lm files in the lm distribution and such things could be solved in a 
il2-lm.* tfm set combined with enc files that map to the prefered instances of 
glyphs (some glyphs are present in more variants), so

i prefer the first variant with adaptions since that was part of the reason for 
the lm project: replace plr, csr, aer etc

kerning is a different game, since the csr metric files are used, you get the 
same kerns as in csr; but future versions of lm will have improved kerning pairs

there has be done some work on lm open type so maybe if you join forces ...
Also, something I just realised (thanks to Vit's example): XeTeX hasn't a
clue when it comes to grid typesetting. (Has to do with the difficulty of

context does grid typesetting itself, there is no dependency on pdftex or so

Ah, here's a conflict: XeTeX doesn't have latin modern yet. (Needs to be
converted to OpenType, with some special table enabled... JK hasn't
documented it yet.) Do you have a switch to avoid the cmr-lm conversion?

Also, something I just realised (thanks to Vit's example): XeTeX hasn't a
clue when it comes to grid typesetting. (Has to do with the difficulty of
getting the metrics from the platform fonts, I think.)

I think it's with two things:
1) you're not using \enableregime[il2]
2) there's no il2 regime anyway!

Perhaps (as a temporary fix), you could convert your file to UTF-8
encoding and include \enableregime[utf] in your input file?

There is some mess with encoding, I think:

Both \dcaron and \v d give proper glyph, but direct 'Ä' not.
If I understand correctly, now the actual typescript is defined in 
type-exa.tex encoding: enco-il2.tex map: il2-public-lm.map with glyph 
encoding: csrm.enc.

So problem is at the very beginning stage. I check if input file is 
exactly in il2 encoding, yes it is. 'Ä' has catcode letter. So a the 
letter is should enter the font.

Where is problem?

no, if all your czech friends agree, it can move to lang-sla.tex
And related question. Is there ANY czech user who uses cz interface, 
like \definujramovani? I guess not. It is very unconfortable and 
confusing especially for unskilled ConTeXter to edit cont-cz.tex to switch

to
  \def\defaultinterface{english}
cont-cz was never meant to be english in interface
If nobody complain I suggest \def\defaultinterface{english}
to be default for cont-cz.
the cont-cz name is reserved for the interface, so if you really want a czech 
format, you need to go cont-en-cz or so

Until lm develops further, can you make a virtual lm font (with 
typescripts etc) that defaults to old-style numerals? Then I can still use 
my accent macros (which of course defeats the whole raison d'etre of 
lm;->) till lm fixes/implements these.

Also note that I'll explicitly credit Jacko/lm in the colophon of the next 
issue of my journal if we can fix this.

I uploaded a new alpha, in addition to previous changes:
- default latin modern in ec encoding instead of default encoding
- substantial speedup of typescript loading (when configured as such)
- a couple of small fixes related to switching to latin modern
there is also a new mag-0009.pdf file, discribing how to use platform fonts etc 
etc,

Ok, but lm is (as far as I know) still not quite usable for e.g. my 
journal. I sent a list of needs to Jacko quite a while back but i don't 
know if they r being considerd or not. Basically we need a global 
old-style numeral option and to fix/add some accents. I'm ready to work 
with u and Jacko to get this done...
Are there things in cmr that are not in latin modern? Keep in mind that the math 
 fonts are still cmr (although some day there may be extensions in that aera as 
well)

Ok, but lm is (as far as I know) still not quite usable for e.g. my 
journal. I sent a list of needs to Jacko quite a while back but i don't 
know if they r being considerd or not. Basically we need a global 
old-style numeral option and to fix/add some accents. I'm ready to work 
with u and Jacko to get this done...

I posted an alpha release. Main differences:
- some efficiency changes in language parts
  needed for || extension
- latin modern fonts instead of cmr/plr/csr/aer/vnr:
  fetch the cont-lmt.zip file if needed

I donwloaded your latest release ...
After generating the format files I checked the log files of 
format-generation.
Following up the discussion on another thread (hyphenation peculiarity) 
I would like to ask how the follwing lines should be interpreted:

language   : patterns en for en loaded (n=1)
(c:\NEWCON~1\tex\texmf/tex/generic/hyphen/ushyph.tex)
language   : no hyphenations en for en (n=1)
language   : patterns uk for uk loaded (n=2)
(c:\NEWCON~1\tex\texmf/tex/generic/hyphen/ukhyph.tex)
language   : no hyphenations uk for uk (n=2)
encoding   : coding texnansi
Are the hyphenations for the english language now correctly set?

I uploaded an alpha release. Well, not that alpha, since i run it here as 
default, but this one has the bib files packahed. Some code moved to the system 
modules and some bits and pieces were cleaned up. Taco and I will discuss a 
further clean up / internationalization later. I hope that this fisex some of 
the reported problems.

(next on the list is the nath module, but i wait till GB tells me to do so)

I made current alpha version efmt, it was OK, but after trying to typeset some text (I 
did not tested anyone else) pdfetex failed with general protection failure (a memory 
cannot be read).

The document is UTF8 XML, the failure occured (see >>HERE<<):

[NTG-context] alpha version low level english

Hi,
I uploaded the upcoming release,
 http://www.pragma-ade.com/context/alpha  

This version is low level english (commands, keywords, values). It is possible that some functionality is not working, but as far as i can see   most should work as expected. If you find low level dutch in the source code, (1) if it is dramatic, let me know asap, (2) if it's just an indirect command, collect them first.  

For Taco: you need to adapt your m-* modules! (I'll send you a script that will make it a bit more comfortable, but some manual work may be needed).
