I will say one thing…If you do the upgrade and it even sort of works then it is
much easier to do a full rebuild later. Replace drive or wipe and reinstall
both work very well. No need to have the machine go out to get a key as when
it connects to the internet the first time it does it automat

Have you tried to remove all networking and re-installing it? What did you
scan the system with? I usually scan with two different products from
different companies to look for malware of any kind but without networking that
would be next to impossible.
