Yesterday Joe Mitchell and I traversed the northern counties (Niagara,
Orleans, Erie, Genesee) in NYSOA Region 1 for a January Big Day, and came
up with a total of 78 species. Highlights included:
Cackling Goose - 7+ on ice amongst 1,200 Canadas at Gypsum Pond, town of
Oakfield (Genesee)
Snow
The Grace Warbler is a no show here at Lido as of 11:30am. 12 people here
looking for it.

I was viewing a group of 30 Common Goldeneye from the parking area across from
CSH State Park at around 0915.
All of a sudden, the far background in my scope turned dark and started moving.
A huge flock of Greater Scaup landed along the far shoreline. The general area
is marked below in the
Chaffinch put in an appearance around 1130. Please see David Klauber's previous
email for directions. Took an hour to get there from Staten Island.

I saw the Chaffinch about 10:45 this morning. The previous appearance was
9:15. Apparently it returned around 11:30. From conversations and reading the
internet, this seems to be the pattern. It stays around 45 seconds each time.
The cul-de-sac where you park is here:

The 23d consecutive season at the Franklin Mt. Hawkwatch in
Oneonta came to a close on Jan. 3 with cold temperatures and a brisk NW
wind. Three birds were tallied; an adult Bald Eagle at 12:52 was
the last raptor of the season.
A total of 4609 raptors were counted through the season, 14% below

This morning at Floyd Bennett Field I came across a rather interesting flock of
~450 Brant on the mudflats at the boat ramp parking lot.
This flock contained a Black Brant, and a hybrid Snow Goose x Brant. While I
had never run across one of the latter, it is apparently a reasonably
well-known
Doug Gochfeld just called. He is looking at a BLACK BRANT in a flock of ~ 450
Atlantic Brant at the "boat launch" at Floyd Bennett field.

I heard one early negative report from Point Lookout, and I assume from the
lack of further reports that the Grace's Warbler was not seen today. Any
specific comments on the day's attempts, especially if it was looked for
