[nysbirds-l] 7/21 Shorebird update from Jamaica Bay Queens County...

2012-07-21 Thread Andrew Baksh
I felt an update was warranted given the turnover in birds that I and
others observed today at Jamaica Bay on the East Pond. It seems a lot of
birds booked it last night, with the biggest cut coming from Short-billed
Dowitchers!

Shorebird numbers were way down from just a day ago. Especially, with
Short-billed Dowitchers whose numbers were estimated to be much less than
half of the 3500 reported earlier in the week.

Stilt Sandpipers were not as many as reported on Monday and while 21 were
counted at the North End, there were not many elsewhere on the pond.
Semipalmated and Least Sandpipers appear to be holding steady and Bobby
Kurtz and I observed our first juvenile Least Sandpiper today. Also seen
were a couple of juvenile Semipalmated Sandpipers.

Despite the smaller numbers, a careful search of the shorebirds that were
on the pond showed that some diversity is starting to build. 2 White-rumped
Sandpipers, a specie which had not been seen for a while were observed
today.

A nice bright Female Western Sandpiper was observed and photographed by
Bobby Kurtz and I and later I found out that this bird was also observed by
a party that included Patricia Lindsay and Joan Quinlan. This is a
different individual than the much smaller billed male that I found on
Monday.

Two Red Knots were also observed on the North Island, which also hosted at
least 3 Pectoral Sandpipers among other shorebirds. And of course as I
reported earlier "Rufous Ruff" is still around. Seen thorough this evening
as the light faded.

Total shorebird species: *16*

[nysbirds-l] White-faced Ibis - Not Seen

2012-07-21 Thread Willie D'Anna and Betsy Potter
Betsy and I stopped twice at the Modern Landfill Wetland on Porter-Center Rd
in the Town of Lewiston today. I looked thoroughly around noon and we
looked briefly again after 5:00 but did not see the ibis. A pair of birders
there on our second stop had been there over half an hour without seeing it.
I believe there are other nearby wetlands in the landfill property (west
side of the road), which is off limits to birders. It is possible that the
ibis spends time over there, if it is still in the area. We saw it fly in
that direction on Wed. evening and others saw it fly that way the evening
before. The last positive sighting that I know of was Wed. evening. There
were a fair number of shorebirds around today but the diversity was down. I
did not scope them and had one SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHER, one SEMI. SANDPIPER,
and several LESSER YELLOWLEGS AND LEAST SANDPIPERS, in addition to Killdeer
and Spotty.

Good birding!

[nysbirds-l] Yellow-bellied sapsucker in Kissena Park, Queens NYC

2012-07-21 Thread Joseph O'Sullivan
A quick walk through Kissena Park netted lots of fledgling robins, a
mildly surprising wood thrush and a very surprising yellow-bellied
sapsucker. I have seen sapsuckers in Kissena Park twice before, but
never at this time of year. It was located in the wooded area in the
south-east corner of the park on the path that runs parallel to 164th
Street.

Greetings. This is the New York Rare Bird Alert for Friday, July
20th, 2012, at 11:00pm. The highlights of this tape are BROWN
PELICAN, AMERICAN AVOCET, RUFF, general shorebird migration, KENTUCKY
WARBLER, and BLUE GROSBEAK.

Three BROWN PELICANS were seen last Saturday at the Calvert Vaux Park
in the Gravesend Bay area of Brooklyn. Also noteworthy were the
continued presence of two BLUE GROSBEAKS, along with such regulars as
Willow Flycatcher and Indigo Bunting.

Last Sunday an AMERICAN AVOCET was seen at the Piermont Pier in Rockland County.

An AMERICAN AVOCET was present Monday on the East Pond of Jamaica Bay
Wildlife Refuge, but was not seen thereafter.

The male RUFF that was initially found July 4th on the East Pond of
Jamaica Bay, continued there this week. Another RUFF, identified as a
female (Reeve), was found there on Sunday. Both birds were reported
present on the East Pond today (Friday) -- the female at the south
end, and the male at the north end.

Shorebird numbers on the East Pond of Jamaica Bay peaked on Monday
with about 4500 birds of 17 species, including 3500 SHORT-BILLED
DOWITCHERS, 800 SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPERS, 51 STILT SANDPIPERS, RED
KNOT, and WESTERN SANDPIPER.

Shorebirds at Cupsogue County Park peaked on Wednesday, with about
1200 birds of 13 species, highlighted by a PECTORAL SANDPIPER. Four
ROYAL TERNS and 2 BLACK TERNS were reported at Cupsogue on Tuesday.

The previously reported KENTUCKY WARBLER continues at the NYS/DEC
Property, on the south side of the Route 25A bypass, between Broadway
(Rocky Point) and Randall Road (Shoreham).

Last Sunday 25 WILSON'S STORM-PETRELS were present at the mouth of the
Rockaway Inlet in Breezy Point, Brooklyn.

A HORNED GREBE in breeding plumage was found in Reeves Bay, Flanders,
at the end of Peconic Trail, and continues through today.

A YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER, BROWN CREEPER, and RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH

[nysbirds-l] 7/21 Ruff continues @ JBWR Queens County...

2012-07-21 Thread Andrew Baksh
There were sporadic reports of neither "Rufous" (male) Ruff or the female type
Reeve being seen today on the East Pond at Jamaica Bay. While on the other
hand there some reports of folks seeing 1 Ruff. I just confirmed that at least
"Rufous Ruff" is still here!

While working my back from the Southend where I unsuccessfully searched for the
Reeve. I came upon Rufous Ruff minutes ago at the west side of North Island.

I should add, that the number of shorebirds on the East Pond today is
significantly a lot less compared to a few days ago. I will post a detailed
report later.
Good and responsible birding!

Still present and putting on quite a show inside of the creek that dead ends on
Dam Trail. The bird has been working in and out of the creek so its worth
checking several of the dead end streets within Reeves Bay. What a great
looking bird.

Still present and putting on quite a show inside of the creek that dead ends on
Dam Trail. The bird has been working in and out of the creek so its worth
checking several of the dead end streets within Reeves Bay. What a great
looking bird.

Best,

[nysbirds-l] 7/21 Ruff continues @ JBWR Queens County...

2012-07-21 Thread Andrew Baksh
There were sporadic reports of neither Rufous (male) Ruff or the female type
Reeve being seen today on the East Pond at Jamaica Bay. While on the other
hand there some reports of folks seeing 1 Ruff. I just confirmed that at least
Rufous Ruff is still here!

Street.

And of course as I
reported earlier Rufous Ruff is still around. Seen thorough this evening
as the light faded.

Total shorebird species: *16*

Good shorebirding in Queens!
