[nysbirds-l] An exciting, but frustrating day, with 2 mysteries...one, bird, the other, mammal.

2014-05-12 Thread robert adamo
   - The day started at 0645 at the N.Y.S.D.E.C. Property in eastern Rocky
Point. I met Richard Kaskan on the trail, and we birded together, until he
had to leave, because as he put it..."I'm still a working stiff" !
Fortunately for me, no more than 5 minutes before that happened, Richard
noticed a bird land in a tree, giving us a view that was less than
satisfactory to call. We both thought it might be a cuckoo, but just then
it took off farther into the woods. Richard also picked up the last bird we
shared, my FOS Orchard Oriole, a 1st cycle male ! On my own, and retracing
our steps, I looked for our possible cuckoo...and finally, was successful.
Watching the bird for ~ 15 minutes as it slowly headed back toward where we
first saw it, I was able to see it was a yellow-billed. What I saw next was
truly exciting...the bird flew lower & closer to me, landed near a Tent
Caterpillar nest and proceeded to chow down, as I proceeded to get some
neat shots of my FOS bird. As I was close to exiting the Property, and
thinking this was probably all the excitement I was entitled to, I met a
birder who also was on his way out, who told me of the "wave of warblers"
he had seen awhile ago on the trail I had just used. Since it was only a
short distance back, with some of the species mentioned being birds I
hadn't seen yet this season, I did an about face, walked, looked, and did
another about-face, without connecting with any newbies ! As I again
approached the terminus of the trail, I got a "snatch" of what I believe
was an *Oporornis* warbler (sp ?). I only saw it from the rear, as it
flew from a low bush, down and out of sight. The colors of it's back, top
of tail and under-tail coverts were correct, as well as it's stealthy
demeanor. The bird did not vocalize. This location is one of the spots
Richard K's Kentucky Warbler sung from, a few years back.

I then headed for the North Fork Preserve in Jamesport, Where,
while walking the trail north (between the East Pond and the woods
with all the vernal ponds, saw what I think was a weasel ! Thinking it
might be a bird initially, once I got the binoculars on it, I did think
weasel (brown, long, thin neck or possibly standing upright, narrow head,
and small ears) followed quickly with a change to probable stick or root.
As all of these choices were being processed, a yellow bird flew through my
"field", and since I hadn't seen a Hooded Warbler yet this season,
switched subjects. I should have known better ! The bird turned out to be a
Yellow Warbler, and the now empty space, became the mystery mammal (Steve
Biasetti, where were you when I needed you ?) Further along on this trail,
I saw my FOS Rose-breasted Grosbeak (pair) before meeting Sue & Jim Benson.
They told me of seeing a Green Heron and Canada Warbler, and armed with
their instructions, I found the heron, but missed the warbler. Before
leaving for home at ~ 1400, I did get to add FOS birds, E.Wood Peewee and a
fairly late Louisiana Waterthrush.

Cheers,
Bob

[nysbirds-l] just "2 to go" (Central Park, NYC, 5/12)

2014-05-12 Thread Thomas Fiore
In looking at the list of warbler species seen thus far this year in
Central Park (Manhattan, N.Y. City) the only 2 which occur annually
that have yet to be reported are: Golden-winged, and Connecticut. The
former has declined greatly in migration, and the latter is very rare
in spring in NYC.

Still loads of migrants yet to show!

good birding,

[nysbirds-l] Hempstead lake SP construction.

2014-05-12 Thread syschiff
Hempstead Lake SP progress report

Lots of construction going on. The entrance to the park from Peninsula Blvd is
closed. Exit 18 West on the Southern State Pkwy is being rebuilt and you may
or may not be able to exit there. The Exit East is OK. Eagle Ave through the
park is udder construction and will be repaved starting with completion of the
repaving within the park. The paths are mostly complete and Field #2 should be
completed today. Just some inner roadways and finishing touches.

I entered Eagle Ave through the city streets and drove south to field #1, not
being sure if I could get there from the parkway going west.. I live to the
east; there was no problem going east from exit 18.. Lovely day although the
birding was a bit slow. It's going to take a bit before things straighten
out---but, we'll be all set for the fall migration.

[nysbirds-l] Sunken Meadow State Park Birds

2014-05-12 Thread ken feustel
A slow morning at Sunken Meadow State Park picked up around 9:00AM when a small
wave of warblers came through. Although we did not find any of the uncommon
warbler species, we still tallied seventeen warbler species, a good total for
western Suffolk County. We eventually totaled eight-six species at the park,
with highlights being Lincoln's Sparrow, a number of Orchard Orioles (breeds)
and our first Yellow-billed Cuckoo. We observed eight shorebird species on the
mudflats just west of the entrance road bridge. While there were no shorebirds
of note at this new habitat (courtesy of Superstorm Sandy), the area should
continue to be scrutinized.

At Jones Beach State Park in the afternoon species of interest included three
Gull-billed Terns and a Common Nighthawk.

Sue and I spent a few weeks birding in southeastern Arizona recently. I will
shortly be posting some photos of the trip to my flickr site.

Good Birdng,

[nysbirds-l] Central Park, May 12

2014-05-12 Thread Dawn Hannay
My overall impression of birding today is that whilst numbers are down from
the weekend, there are plenty of great birds to see. I started at the Pool
where I saw a Solitary Sandpiper on the grass, and where there were
surprising numbers of Northern Waterthrush. I saw at least 6 in the first
10 minutes. Unfortunately I was called out of the park, but returned to the
Ramble at about 11 AM. I will not list all that I saw but the highlights
were just that: a very cooperative Bay-breasted Warbler near the boat
concession by the Boathouse, followed closely by a Prothonotary Warbler at
the Point, and a very skulky Yellow-breasted Chat seen 3 times by me, and
finally by others at the Maintenance Meadow. I capped off the afternoon by
seeing a Clay-colored Sparrow just southeast of the playground at the 85th
and CPW entrance to the park. There had reportedly been 2 there earlier,
with another reported from Strawberry Fields.

[nysbirds-l] Ramble, Central Park: PROTHONOTARY WARBLER and Yellow-breasted Chat

2014-05-12 Thread Anders Peltomaa
Hi all,

Half-an-hour ago Dawn Hannay reported a Prothonotary warbler at the Point.
Last word is that it flew towards the Oven.

A little longer ago Dawn reported a Yellow-breasted Chat at the Maintenance
Meadow (well, actually she only wrote "chat", but I am assuming that the
bird in question is a Yellow-breasted chat...)

Good luck if you try for these birds.

- Cheers from a slightly frustrated birder stuck at work,

[nysbirds-l] Bryant Park NYC Lincoln's Sparrow etc.

2014-05-12 Thread gabriel willow
I led my twice-weekly bird walk in Bryant Park (that little patch of green
between 40th & 42nd St from 5th to 6th Ave) this morning from 8-9am.  Things
are really picking up there!

Most of the activity was high in the treetops, with a few birds skulking in
flower beds and various corners.  There were many warblers way up in the
foliage that I couldn't see well enough to ID, so this is almost certainly an
incomplete list.

The most abundant migrants were Gray Catbirds and Ovenbirds, which seemed to be
under every shrub and table, and confusingly were high in the London Plane
trees as well.

Highlights of the walk were 2 late-seeming Prairie Warblers (a male and a
female), and a Lincoln's Sparrow that landed in a plane at the NE corner of the
lawn, near the Library.

Full list:

Double-crested Cormorant (flyover flock, headed West)
Rock Pigeon
Red-eyed Vireo
European Starling (actually unusual in the park, but a pair is now nesting)
American Robin
Swainson's Thrush
Wood Thrush
Gray Catbird (many)
Northern Parula
Yellow Warbler
Magnolia Warbler
Black-throated Blue Warbler (several)
Prairie Warbler (2)
Black-and-White Warbler
Ovenbird
Common Yellowthroat
Eastern Towhee
White-throated Sparrow
Lincoln's Sparrow
Baltimore Oriole (flyover)
House Sparrow

[nysbirds-l] Wood Ducklings in Kings Co.

Seven Wood Duck ducklings were on the Upper Pool of Brooklyn's Prospect Park

HI all,
Another sparrow species to look for today would be Lincoln's Sparrow. I
found one first thing this morning by Tanners' Spring, another was to be
seen at Strawberry Fields and Gabriel Willow found one in Bryant Park.

Chris sent a second text alert this morning in which he reported
Bay-breasted Warbler in an oak tree on the West side of Falconer's Hill.

good Monday birding,

[nysbirds-l] Ramble, Central Park: PROTHONOTARY WARBLER and Yellow-breasted Chat

2014-05-12 Thread Anders Peltomaa
Hi all,

Half-an-hour ago Dawn Hannay reported a Prothonotary warbler at the Point.
Last word is that it flew towards the Oven.

A little longer ago Dawn reported a Yellow-breasted Chat at the Maintenance
Meadow (well, actually she only wrote chat, but I am assuming that the
bird in question is a Yellow-breasted chat...)

Good luck if you try for these birds.

- Cheers from a slightly frustrated birder stuck at work,

Ken Sue Feustel

[nysbirds-l] just 2 to go (Central Park, NYC, 5/12)

2014-05-12 Thread Thomas Fiore
In looking at the list of warbler species seen thus far this year in
Central Park (Manhattan, N.Y. City) the only 2 which occur annually
that have yet to be reported are: Golden-winged, and Connecticut. The
former has declined greatly in migration, and the latter is very rare
in spring in NYC.

Still loads of migrants yet to show!

good birding,
