Jim Cohen and I spent about 3 hrs. birding on the Cupsogue flats. Overall
numbers were not impressive(only 20 Short billed Dowitchers ,2 Willets,50
Semipalmated sandpiper,12 Least sandpiper to give an idea) We did have two
sightings of Pectoral sandpiper, which seemed noteworthy.Before sailing
Shai Mitra's discovery (post courtesy of Andrew Baksh) of an American Avocet on
Sunken Meadow Creek at Sunken Meadow State Park did not mention that the bird
was found during the low tide cycle. I did not find any nearby reference points
at my usual tide table reference (saltwatertides.com).

In addition to now only one AMERICAN AVOCET, the other shorebird highlights
from an abbreviated morning on the East Pond were. 1 LONG-BILLED DOWITCHER and
2 PECTORAL SANDPIPERS.
No sign of any WESTERN or STILT SANDPIPER and no WILSON's PHALAROPE either. The
overall number of shorebirds were
The cut at Mecox Bay (Suffolk Co.) was opened recently, and even though it
has closed again, there is an extensive flat. Shorebird and tern numbers
are building. On Monday I saw a WHIMBREL. Today there were two BLACK TERNS.
The best find of the day today was a RED-NECKED GREBE sleeping in the
Shai Mitra, just called to report an *AMERICAN AVOCET* at Sunken Meadow
State Park on Long Island.
The bird was observed in the creek on the west side of the bridge near the
main entrance. Good luck if you go and many thanks to Shai for the report.

For anyone planning to make a trip out to Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge today.
Presuming it is one of the three. A single *AMERICAN AVOCET, *is currently
on the East Pond. It is further south than previous reports and is
currently feeding in an area past Gull Point on the west side of the East

near the blind that is west of the Nature Center parking lot. It is feeding
along the Phragmites line on the south side of the pond.
