[nysbirds-l] Hunters Garden in Eastport, LI, NY
A late morning birding trip to Hunters Garden proved both quiet and productive. Highlights included numerous singing ovenbirds; several pine warblers involved in what appeared to be territorial skirmishes as they sort out boundaries; a hermit thrush that provided several close-up looks; a blue-grey gnatcatcher building a nest already adorned with lichens; a flicker excavating a cavity; a drop dead prolonged view of a radiant, male northern parula; a pair of chipping sparrows; and what I assume to be a mated pair of scarlet tanagers alongside the road on the way in, with both flying down to the road to catch insects. Also, several Spring Azures, several skippers patrolling up and down the sandy road, a Painted Lady, and what appeared to be an elfin species although I couldn't identify it as to species. Ran into Steve Biasetti and friends who saw wood thrush, and several other warbler species. [nysbirds-l] Two Tri-colored Herons - Dune Rd, East Quogue
A short while after re-locating the Tri-colored Heron reported earlier, in the shallow ditch slightly east of original location, the bird flew north, into the marsh. Continuing along Dune Rd, heading west, I stopped just west of Dolphin Lane, and saw a second Tri-colored Heron. In comparing photos, one has a distinctive red eye and breeding white plum on back of head, while the first one had yellow eyes, no breeding plum and was a softer, more washed out brown/gray back of neck, back and wings. The second bird also flew north, into the Marsh. Patience may be required to relocated either or both birds. Photos of both are being added to my eBird submission. Eileen Schwinn (Both birds also seen by Mike Higgiston a short time after initially found) Sent from my iPhone -- NYSbirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsWELCOME.htm http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsRULES.htm http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/nysbirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/NYSBirds-L 3) http://birding.aba.org/maillist/NY01 Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --

[nysbirds-l] Tri-colored Heron - Dune Rd, East Quogue
Currently, there is a Tri-colored heron feeding in the ditch along Dune Rd by house 81(large white modern home under construction with white Gate). Am Bittern in same location, and Clapper Rail heard and seen in distance. Other Clappers were visibly seen slightly to east where Bay nearly meets the Road.
