[nysbirds-l] Yellow-breasted chat, philly vireo etc Central Park North End

2019-09-13 Thread AA Fawkes
Still out birding, but thought I should report that Alex Hale and I just
had a (very skulky) yellow-breasted chat at the southwest corner of
wildflower meadow in Central Park, as well as Philadelphia and white-eyed
vireos on the great hill. Loads of birds around after the north winds last
night, though not much active migration visible from the park.
Happy Birding!

[nysbirds-l] Buff-breasted Sandpiper at Mecox Inlet

2019-09-07 Thread AA Fawkes
In addition to the continuing avocet I just saw a buff-breasted sandpiper
in the shrubby area at the western end of the inlet. It was spooked after a
few minutes by 2 young peregrines and flew east down the beach and out of
sight but has returned so it may stick around.
Ebird checklist will back-of-the-camera photo here

[nysbirds-l] Henslow's sparrow continues Jacob Riis Park, Queens

2014-11-24 Thread AA Fawkes
Jacob Drucker texted about half an hour ago that he, Nadir Souirgi, and
James Knox have refound the Henslows, in the same area that it was seen
yesterday at the south west corner of the golf course at Jacob Riis park.
It flushed out of the center of the field and then flew towards the fence
by the golf course.

[nysbirds-l] Inwood Park- another Manhattan collared-dove

2014-09-03 Thread AA Fawkes
Today I spotted a Eurasian Collared-dove at Dyckman Fields, next to Inwood
park at the northern end of Manhattan. The bird was in heavy tail molt, but
its large size, unspotted wings, and distinctively patterned tail were
clearly visible.
Perhaps not very worth chasing following the long-staying bird in Chelsea,
but a cool bird nonetheless and suggesting that collared-doves may soon be
in NYC to stay.
Very bad but clearly identifiable cell phone photos here.

[nysbirds-l] Kumlien's/Thayer's Gull on CP Resevoir Sunday

2014-02-03 Thread AA Fawkes
Apologies for posting late. An immature white-winged gull, possibly a
Thayer's, was on the reservoir Sunday, along with several hundred other
gulls and a definite Kumlien's. There has been quite a bit of debate on
various facebook groups, and I would welcome more opinions. I'm going to
try to re-find the bird tomorrow to get better pictures, as the ones I've
got are distant and overexposed.
