RE: [nysbirds-l] Bairds Brooklyn - missing mid-day (high tide)
I don't know what the tides were the last few days this bird was seen, but several people, unfortunately including myself, unsuccessfully searched the entire length of the beach for this bird for several hours mid-afternoon around high tide. The bird was viewed (of course, by many others) both before and after this tidal period. I would suggest to anyone searching for this bird in the next few days, to review the tide charts to avoid high tide. However, during this high tide period, the shoreline held a good number of shorebirds, including one Pectoral Sandpiper. [nysbirds-l] Northern Shrike in Warwick, NY
For those interested, apparently there has been a Northern Shrike hanging around for just over a week in the last 200-300 yards of low trees and shrubs between Lower Wisner Road and Upper Wisner Road where those two roads meet at Wisner Road in Warwick, NY. Today, I had a business meeting (yes, I am talking about a meeting on Sunday) about 20 minutes from that location, so I decided to swing by and take a look in the afternoon. After about a half hour, while standing on Upper Wisner Road, I located the bird in the bushes between the two roads about 250 yards from where those roads meet. Actually, what first got my attention was its confrontation with an angry Mockingbird. RE: [nysbirds-l] Tiana Bayside, Early Evening - No Elegant Tern
In furtherance of Eileen and Bob's notice of a possible Red-necked Stint at Tiana, on Saturday evening, after an unsuccessful attempt at the Elegant Tern, I left Tiana and headed to Triton Lane to check out the birds there. I decided to stop back at Tiana on my way home and among the shorebirds, was what I believed to be a Red-necked Stint. I had previously viewed the bird at Cupsogue, and was pretty sure it was the Stint, however, it was about 8:30/8:45ish p.m. and it was just too dark to confirm. If it was the same bird, then it was at Tiana on at least Saturday and Tuesday evenings. I left Tiana on Sunday at around 5:30 p.m. for Cupsogue to get the Elegant Tern, but did not see the Stint that early evening at Tiana. For those of you who may try for the Stint at Tiana this evening, as a bonus, other birders have reported hearing the calls of Northern Bobwhite in the brush surrounding the parking lot, although, I have not been lucky enough to hear them. [nysbirds-l] Black Tern and Arctic Tern at Nickerson Beach
Thanks to Brendan Fogarty for the tip. As of 7:00 p.m. a 1st year Arctic Tern was seen at Nickerson Beach among a flock of Common Tern. The adult Black Tern was also located at about 7:45 p.m. on the east side of the beach among a flock of several hundred Common Terns. Two Roseate Terns were also present; however, upon my arrival and meeting Brendan on the beach, I learned I was about 15 minutes too late to catch a Pomarine Jaeger.
