Dune road was very quiet today. Large portions of Tiana Bay are frozen
over with black ducks and gulls everywhere. Only saw one Northern Harrier
that we spooked from the shoulder of the road. Plenty of Scoters near the
inlet (on the west side of the jetty) but didn't spend the time to see if

It's my understanding that Falconer's DO NOT keep this species. Also,
there is a distinct Florida population - much shorter trip for the bird
than coming from Texas.

Does anyone have a late date for osprey in Suffolk County?
Seen from Swezey Street around 4:00 PM.
Checked for the Ravens and saw nothing
Also the Bufflehead continues at Swan Pond Preserve. Any photographers out
there interested in getting great shots should give it a try - there's

While a bufflehead on long island in winter is not exactly notable - I'm
making this post to make birders aware of the new park in East Patchogue
called 'Swan River Preserve' which is on the southside of Montauk Highway,
next to friendlys (directly across the street from Swan Lake). The new

Seems a bit late in the season so thought I would put it out there. There
was an Osprey an hour ago on a branch overlooking the Swan River in East
Patchogue, viewed from the Swezey Street bridge (just south of the RR
tracks and the new Town of Brookhaven "Swan River Preserve" next to
Friendlys).

Was able to review the photos I took earlier this week - it appears that
there was a raft of 100+ Black Scoter hanging around off the Casino
Restaurant/Bar at Davis Park, Fire Island.

This afternoon my wife and I were paddle boarding past the old girl scouts
camp in Hampton Bays (off Red Creek Road) and heard several prairie
warblers calling out from the edges of the cliff. We also saw a pair of
goldfinches feeding at the water's edge.

This afternoon I spent some time at the headwaters of the Forge River -
there's a beautiful hiking trail on the south side which is accessible from
the sunrise highway service road - though there's no true place to "park"
(the opposite side of the river is private property).

In a rather unusual sighting this afternoon, I was in the parking lot
between the YMCA and Briarcliff College (just south of Patchogue Lake) and
saw a breeding plumage Laughing Gull tempting fate by getting within a foot
of a Canada Goose that is nesting in the parking lot median.

EPCAL was very quiet birdwise but there were a lot of Kestrels around on
the Western runway. I checked the old radar station on the north side of
25 and found even more Kestrels - there were probably 10 utilizing that
site. There are very few perches at the radar site due to a recent mowing

I forgot to mention this, but I did a trip down Dune Road yesterday (From
Ponquogue Bridge to the first Bridge in Westhampton) and basically saw
nothing. It was very quiet and very drab - though things should turn
around shortly, starting with Red-winged black birds.

As has been previously reported through this listserv and a Canadian blog -
some snowy owls made it onto a freighter that left NY and hugged the coast
near Canada before heading to Europe. At least two of these birds are in
the Netherlands and are being regularly photographed - here is a link to

birds of note - though there was a large collection of gulls on the small
sandbars/islands @ the new old inlet. Gullheads would probably turn
something up.

The inlet held a nice raft which consisted of various scoter species and
Common Eiders as well as some fringe red-breasted mergansers. The
highlight was an immature male King Eider that I photographed
(accidentally).

a tree directly south of the parking lot (just west of the large swath of
un-vegetated beach) without even trying. After I took one photo it was gone.

This morning I drove through EPCAL - both runways and came up with nothing.
Didn't see any hawks, let alone Snowy Owls. I did see a couple
Meadowlarks but that was it, I even checked the radar station to the north.
