Re: [nysbirds-l] Belted kingfisher question
Tom, I was at the Rondout Reservoir this morning and had an adult and juvenile. I am also aware of at least a couple in Wurtsboro. There was a pair at the Bashakill for a couple of months, but they seemed to finally move on, water was exceptionally high in May and June. [nysbirds-l] Possible Trumpeter Swan at the Bashakill
On Wednesday morning Scott Baldinger found a swan at the Bashakill. It was viewed from a great distance and we initially identified the bird as a Tundra Swan. Once we were able to view many of the photos taken yesterday, we suspected the bird may be a Trumpeter Swan. The bird continues this morning and many more photos have been taken. A couple of dozen birders have seen the bird and we believe it is a Trumpeter. We would like some input from individuals who have more experience with the species than we do. We all have experience with Tundra and some of us with Trumpeter. For anyone interested, please see the ebird reports for Tundra Swan for Sullivan County dated 4/12. For additional photos and more description of the bird can be found on my blog at https://bashakillbirder.wordpress.com We would appreciate feedback from those in the know to help get a conclusive ID of this bird. As of this writing, the bird continues across from the Main Boat Launch at the Bashakill. [nysbirds-l] Hummingbird
I normally don't post to this list serve, but I have a question in regard to a hummingbird report. I haven't seen this mentioned on any list serve as of yet. A Rufous Hummingbird was reported to ebird yesterday and Sunday in Broome County. I have looked at the photos attached to the reports and though I am probably wrong, I think this bird is a candidate for a Calliope Hummingbird. I base my opinion on several factors. First, in one photo it shows what appears to be a beginning gorget with a distinct white line separating it from the eye. It is a long thin dark area where a gorget would normally begin. Because of the size of the photo, I can't say for certain that it is the gorget, but there is no other explanation for that line that I can think of. Also on shots of the perched bird, the wing-tips seem to be longer than the tail. This could be a good indication of Calliope. All other features could be interpreted for either species, but I think it is worth looking into. I tried to find contact information the person who posted the reports, but was unable to locate any. Hopefully someone with more knowledge than I can do some follow up on this bird and come to a definite identification. I would really be interested in the outcome. [nysbirds-l] Extralimital
While off topic, I thought this might be of interest to New York birders. A TUFTED PUFFIN has been found among the Atlantic Puffin Colony on Machias Seal Island off the coast of Jonesport Maine. The bird has been well photographed. To see the reports and photos simply go to the Maine RBA. This is an easily accessed location, trips go out daily, and may be a way for some to add this mega-rarity to their life list. I think this is a first record for the Atlantic. [nysbirds-l] Population Decline?
I am pleased to report that in Sullivan County, Ulster County and at least parts of Orange County not only is there no decline, but in some cases increases. Chestnut-sided Warbler is actually abundant at Wolf Brook and increased at the Bashakill. Cerulean Warbler (Bashakill) and Hooded Warbler are both showing increases at those locations. Ovenbirds are abundant everywhere. Grosbeaks, Orioles and Tanagers seem to be in good numbers as well. Cuckoos are the best in a couple of years. American Redstart does seem to be down at Wolf Brook, but is everywhere at the Bashakill. Scott Baldinger reports similar numbers on his Ulster County weekly bird walks. [nysbirds-l] Ross's Goose and Tundra Swans
Though the Snow Goose flock at the Camel Farm took off this morning, they returned in about an hour. Down to about 1,000 birds at this time, the Ross's Goose was immediately spotted. They remained at the farm for the remainder of the morning and were still present when we passed by at 1 pm. About 20 minutes after our arrival, Renee Davis spotted the Tundra Swans flying in. They landed in the smaller pond off the left of the main pond. All birds were still present at last look. The first winter Ross's was not seen today to my knowledge, but the flock was down by at least a couple of thousand birds. [nysbirds-l] Unusual Cormorant at Rye Beach, Westchester County
Today I birded Westchester County. While scanning the beach and rocks at Rye Town Park I spotted an unusual cormorant on the rocks. The bird had an entirely white belly, throat, and chin. A defined line demarked the face, causing a black cap and white chin. The bill appeared thin. My first thought was Great Cormorant, but I'm not really sure about that. The bird remained on the rocks for the duration of my stay. If anyone has any input as to the identity of this bird I would appreciate the input. I have never seen a cormorant that resembled this bird. [nysbirds-l] Virginia"s Warbler
Hot on the heals of our successful trek for the Northern Lapwings on Wednesday, a group of us (Renee Davis, Scott Baldinger, Lance Verderame and I) from Sullivan County headed down to Alley Pond Park this morning to make a second attempt at the Virginia's Warbler. We were only there about 20 minutes, when at 7:30 am Lance Verderame spotted the bird along one of the paths transecting the kettle. The bird was right along the path which was marked on Steve Walters map with a 10. The bird worked both sides of this path for about ten minutes, eventually crossing the paved trail on the 73rd Ave side and disappeared in the undergrowth between the trail and the street. While we had some excellent views, none in our group were successful in getting a photo. At least three other birders, Jay McGowan among them were able to see the bird. [nysbirds-l] Virginias Warbler
[nysbirds-l] Amazing Waterfowl movement in Sullivan County
Today we experienced the single highest count ever of Brant passing through the county. A total of 1,184 Brant were tallied through the day. Almost all skeins were photographed as the birds passed low through the Bashakill. [nysbirds-l] While we are on the subject
The topic of the Hooded Crow reminded me of something I had noted last winter and never addressed. I couldn't help but notice that all mention of the Hooded Crow has been deleted from the New York and New Jersey Checklists on e-bird. When you bring up the bar charts, Hooded Crow is not there. Is there some other location that these records are logged? It seems odd to me that they would have been deleted. Whether or not a bird is accepted by the state committees seems irrelevant to its presence on the list. Certainly species like Red Jungle-fowl and Budgerigar (New Jersey) and Swan Goose and Mitred Parakeet (New York) remain on the e-bird state checklists. By the way, the Hooded Crow continues on "my e-bird" list, just not the state lists. Perhaps there is information I don't have about how these issues are handled. At any rate I would appreciate it if someone who knows the answer could fill us in on this topic. [nysbirds-l] Bashakill - Orange-Crowned Warbler
Many first of the year migrants have been coming through or arriving at the Bashakill over the last couple of weeks. Highlights of these have been American Bittern, Common Gallinule, Brown Thrashers (three pairs breeding already) Pied-billed Grebes (already breeding) Rusty Blackbirds and an abundance of passerines. Warblers highlighted the day today with at least 11 species now being seen. The highlight however was an ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER. Initially spotted by Arlene Borko, we soon relocated the bird whose identity was unknown. The bird was quite cooperative, feeding in Barberry only six feet off the ground and 15 feet from us. It quickly became clear it was OCWA. Olive-green back, gray green underparts faintly streaked. Dark eye line and thin bill. Yellow undertail coverts and no other markings (wing bars etc) cinched the ID. This was only my third OCWA in the county. The bird was found at approximately 1021 South Road. It remained in view for over five minutes, but was unable to be located after that. With dozens of warblers present at this spot, it may still be around. [nysbirds-l] Sullivan County Whip-poor-wills
I went out to try for Whips this evening, hoping they might be in early as so many other species have been. I found three calling Whips on Pine Kill Road in their usual spot. Also present were two Woodcock, a singing Winter Wren and a gobbling Turkey, all after dark. Earlier in the week I had Northern Parula (4/16) twelve days earlier than previous early record and Yellow Warbler (4/17) five days earlier than previous early record. [nysbirds-l] Sullivan County Crossbills
Many people got to see the White-winged Crossbills today. There were about 15 (when I was present) and at least 100 Pine Siskins in the area along Cooley Road. The best way for people to find the bog is to take Rt 17 to exit 98 and take Parksville/Cooley Road east about 8 miles. So many people came for the winter finch irruptions in '08,'09,'10 that I thought everyone was familier with the area. Sorry for not posting better directions. The bog is a large open area on the right side of the road among vast expanses of spruce trees. Other birds present today included 3 Red-breasted Nuthatch, 2 Brown Creeper, 2 Common Raven and 1 Bald Eagle. There are so many cones over several square miles of spruce trees that the Crossbills should remain in the area for some time. Good luck if you go. [nysbirds-l] Sullivan County Great Day
This morning after checking the bash (a lot of waterfowl), I headed to Neversink to see how the winter finches were faring. I was not disappointed. I ran into several flocks of PINE SISKINS. I also spotted a few PURPLE FINCHES on Hunter Road. When I reached Cooley Bog, as I stepped out of the car I heard Click-click calls all around me. I immediately found (8) WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS in the tops of the trees in the same spot where they had bred in 2008. More calls could be heard all around and it was clear there were many many birds in the area. I had a total of 50-60 Pine Siskins there and at least (18) White-winged Crossbills. A Red-breasted Nuthatch and half a dozen Chickadees completed the count. I was able to view the birds and take some terrible pics over the next half hour. The birds then all moved into the vast stand of spruce, out of sight and eventually out of hearing range. I left and headed into Liberty and on Aden Hill Road found an adult NORTHERN GOSHAWK. For anyone interested in coming for the birds, I would expect morning is best and a wait is to be expected as these birds are clearly moving around a lot. Also of note, an adult NORTHER SHRIKE continues on Zylstra Road in Fosterdale. Good luck if you come. [nysbirds-l] Slaty-backed Gull - NO
Many birders held vigil for the Slaty-backed Gull this afternoon. Unfortunately, the gull didn't show. I think it is a real possibility that the gull will return. Previous SBGU's in the Hudson Valley have remained for extended periods. If this is true and the gulls routine can be determined, there is still a good chance people will get to see this bird. A nice consolation prize was a total of 5 Iceland Gulls. There was also a nice CACKLING GOOSE on the Wallkill River at Lippincott Road found by Tom Burke. [nysbirds-l] Slaty-backed Gull
I have posted a few of Curt McDermott's photos of an adult Slaty-backed Gull at the Beacon Train Station on the Hudson River. Upon reviewing the many photos Curt took of the bird I have concluded it is none other than a Slaty-backed Gull. Congratulations to Curt on a great find. [nysbirds-l] Gray-crowned Rosy-finch
First, congratulations to Dave Rankin on such a great find. Secondly, I am surprised no one has made comment on this bird. It would as far as I can tell be a first record for New York. The photos are clearly a Gray-crowned Rosy-finch, and the timing is perfect for a vagrant of this species. Since I knew nothing about Rosy-finches vagrancy to the east, I checked it out and was surprised at what I found. Though not frequent, it certainly does occur. Here is what I've found: E-bird: 1 - McComb, Michigan 3/11/84 1 - Lucas, Ohio 2/26/86 1 - Will, Illinois 11/17/90 1 - two days Chelmford, Ontario, CAN 1/30 - 1/31/05 1 - Chippewa, Michigan 2/14/05 1 - apparently wintered: Barago, Michigan 12/17/06 12/21/06 12/30/06 3/16/07 >From state and province records: 1 - accepted report Quebec Avian Records Committee (date location I was unable to find) 1 - Gorham Maine - wintered at feeder 12/15/36 - 3/10/37 captured and banded on 3/7/37 Hopefully, there will be followup on this bird, with possible repeat sightings. If weather eventually turns bad, close watch at feeders is warranted.
