Western Meadowlark continues at Bush Terminal Park today, seemingly favoring vacant lot area around caboose here (40.6537005, -74.0165975), occasionally perching up in trees/on caboose. It did make one brief appearance at the shoreline grassy area here (40.6537781, -74.0190701). Note that the area behind the fences (the vacant lot) is off-limits, and gates are only open because construction crews are moving concrete. Given that the Glaucous and several Iceland Gulls (undoubtedly along with many of the more common species) have been moving between Randall’s Island (the dumpsters on the Bronx side off the northeast corner in particular) and the Reservoir, I would suggest checking NE Randall’s for the Slaty-backed Gull. The Slaty-backed Gull has not been seen here in CP in the last hour or so since it was seen flying out. Has recently been seen in the evening feeding on berry trees on W 47th Street just east of 10th Ave, so is covering a fairly decent chunk of ground in this area. Several observers looking this morning for the Manhattan Ash-throated Flycatcher have so far failed to find the bird. In addition to looking around the soccer fields in Fort Washington Park where it was seen yesterday, two of us walked south to West Harlem Piers Park at W 125th Street searching along the way to no avail. It is worth noting that a Myiarchus flycatcher was seen by Nate O’Reilly at the southwest corner of the Inwood Hill Park ballfields a few days ago (about 35 blocks north of the Fort Washington Park ballfields). If this was the same bird, it would suggest quite a wide ranging individual, so anyone looking for it might want to check points north and south along the Hudson River greenway. I’ll add that just a bit before sunset, the bird made another appearance in
the mid right hand side of that buckthorn bush (viewing from trail looking
north), pretty much exactly where it appeared briefly before, but this time
giving stellar views for me and one other observer for about 10 minutes,
eating a few berries, and not even flushing when a barking off-leash dog
ran right past!
Seems early morning and last thing in the day may be the best bet to view
this bird, assuming it continues...

Re: [nysbirds-l] Sage Thrasher - Columbia County, NY
After an hour+ of waiting (maybe longer by others on site before I arrived)
the Sage Thrasher made an appearance in the back of a bush with black
berries approximately right here (42.4017505, -73.5660115) at around 3:55
pm and stayed in view for a couple minutes. Patience required for this
bird.
Closest parking is here: (42.4017505, -73.5660115). Several parking options
further down the road if it’s full there, all an easy walk to the bird’s
location.

[nysbirds-l] Western Flycatcher yesterday in Queens
Haven't seen this posted here yet: Michael Gottleib photographed an apparent Western Flycatcher (Pacific-slope/Cordilleran) yesterday at Kissena Park in Queens, NYC, precise location reported as 'the wooded area, off the bridle path that runs parallel to 164th St'. The bird is an Empidonax flycatcher with a dingy yellowish coloration overall, low contrast between face and throat, bold eyering with distinct flare at the rear, distinct ragged-looking crest, very short primary projection, apparently relatively long tail (compared to Yellow-bellied), and pale fringes on the wing reaching awfully close to lower of two wing bars. [nysbirds-l] Connecticut Warbler Manhattan
Earlier this morning I found an extremely cooperative immature Connecticut Warbler feeding on a narrow lawn in the west side of De Witt Clinton Park in Hell’s Kitchen, often at very close range. I regret that I did not post to this list earlier, but I am told the bird is still being seen, offering atypically great views of this usually very secretive species. I viewed it from the path within the park but others viewed it from the sidewalk on 12th ave by 54th Street, which would be ideal when the bird is on the northern side of that lawn where it slopes down towards 12th, as the grass can obscure it surprisingly well. [nysbirds-l] Baird’s Sandpiper et al. — Breezy Point
An adult Baird’s Sandpiper was the highlight from my morning birding along the beach at Breezy Point, Queens. It was about a 15 minute walk east along the beach from the fishing parking lot, on wet sand generally near 4 Sanderlings. Sorry for the delayed report and lack of precise location, my phone died right after I got a few photos. I was just made aware that evidently this far east along Breezy Point beach is private property, so beware... Also had a Royal Tern moving east along the beach and a Bobolink circling over the parking lot when I first arrived. Was no longer present there around 5pm when I and others checked again but apparently was also missing there at that time yesterday, so may still be around. Western Kingbird was present (may very well still be) when I and others were last looking (maybe 2:45?) at northwest end of landfill west of ballfields. It repeatedly returned to bare snags on north side of the road there. At the landfill, a skittish Upland Sandpiper continues, occasionally flying around giving good looks and listens to flight calls, but hard to see on the ground. It's been ranging over most of the area of the landfill, seemingly not faithful to any particular spot. Generally the western/southern part of the landfill. Arrived at the NE cloverleaf pond at Jones Beach SP about 10 minutes ago. Couldn’t see any ducks in the pond itself among the heavy vegetation, but then about five minutes ago 10 Black-bellied Whistling-Ducks picked up, whistling, and flew east/northeast. Perhaps a couple still in this pond, likely all still in the area, but who knows? Just left Nickerson. Wilson’s Phalarope continued at that marshy spot when I last checked. At least 3 adult Roseate Terns loafing with Common Tern flock there. 1 Gull-billed Tern over east colony before flying west about an hour and a half ago. No sign of Black Tern(s) since around when I arrived. No sign of any Arctic Terns. Re: [nysbirds-l] Varied Thrush, Friday 1/18 [Richmond Co., NY - Staten Island, NYC]
As reported, the Varied Thrush was seen today in the span of about five minutes in the northern part of Clove Lakes Park around 10:55 am this morning. It stayed up in trees while we saw it, moving perches a few times before it was lost flying to the south, losing height. A Yellow-breasted Chat continues further south in the park as previously reported. At times it gave fairly good views moving actively through bushes and trees, feeding on remaining berries, before it disappeared into some low thickets and was not refound. At the southern lake in the park, a Cackling Goose was sleeping just minutes ago in with Canada Geese on the edge of the lake’s ice. It had its head tucked in most of the time, but it was easy to pick out by its smaller size and paleness relative to all the surrounding Canada Geese. A Winter Wren, Hermit Thrush, and Swamp Sparrow continue in the vicinity of the chat. [nysbirds-l] Swainson's Warbler Prospect Park
The Swainson's Warbler was seen about 30 minutes ago in same location as before, foraging in the patch of woods where a large fallen tree lies right next to a woodchip path. It showed briefly up close, but then vanished and I haven't seen it again since. Not a lot of people around, except a shady guy with a bike who did a lit of staring. Adult male Eurasian wigeon was just visible at Tschache Pool with many American wigeon, distant looking north from the viewing area with the tower (scope necessary). A short-eared owl was seen in flight at about 5:45 pm at Marine Park today (February 8). Other birds present at the park included a female northern pintail, a light-morph rough-legged hawk, a red-shouldered hawk, two Wilson's snipes, an orange-crowned warbler, two northern harriers (one adult male), a clapper rail, many American tree sparrows, four killdeer, a greater yellowlegs, fly-by monk parakeets, and a flyover bald eagle.
