[nysbirds-l] Black-necked Stilt and Warblers at Forest Lawn Cemetery (Buffalo)
The Black-necked stilt was present at 3:45 pm today at South Feeder Marsh in the Tonawanda WMA. The bird was initially found by Celeste Morien at Kumpf Marsh (Iroquois NWR) and was re-found today by Greg Lawrence. This morning at Forest Lawn there were a few more warblers than I have seen lately - Alec picked out 2 Cape May, in addition there were Black-and-White, Blackburnian, Magnolia, Yellow, Yellow-rumped, Black-throated Blue, American Redstart, Bay-breasted, Black-throated Green, Northern Parula and Palm. Others had Northern Waterthrush - I did not. Warbler Ridge and Scajacquada Creek near Main St were both birdy areas in the cemetery. [nysbirds-l] Blue-gray Gnatcatcher - Hamburg, NY 4/13/17
Taking a break from my visit at the Hamburg Hawkwatch on Thursday, I took a walk through Lakeside Cemetery. I found a Blue-gray Gnatcatcher. It was near, but did not appear to be associating with, Black-capped Chickadees and Golden-crowned Kinglets. The only warbler I encountered was 1 Yellow-rumped Warbler foraging alone. [nysbirds-l] Piping Plover - Black Vulture - Woodlawn Beach SP - Erie County
Sue Barth had a Piping Plover at Woodlawn Beach this morning. I was able to view the bird from 10-11:10- am. The bird was associating with a Semipalmated Plover. Both plovers were near the water's edge approximately 1/2 way between the boardwalk entrance to the beach and the the outlet of the creek (which may be Rush Creek). Sue did take photos - hopefully the band numbers will identify the origin of this bird. The Black Vulture was very close to the outlet of the creek and was associating with a group of Turkey Vultures. This bird and most of the TVs ultimately flew off. [nysbirds-l] Black-backed Woodpecker - Not Seen (Cheektowaga NY)
Just an update on the Black-backed Woodpecker seen at Reinstein Woods Nature Preserve in Depew, NY (a Buffalo suburb). Many people visited Reinstein Woods today in hope of relocating the bird photographed on Tuesday. It is my understanding that no one was able to find the bird today (Thursday, May 28). The photos were taken from the boardwalk near the visitor's center at preserve. Photos of the bird were posted to the Buffalo and WNY Wildlife Photography page, and then linked to the Buffalo-Niagara Rare Bird page on Facebook (photos by Kathleen Thomas). That being said, I suspect a lot of folks will continue to search for the bird over the next few days. Please share sighting info on the Genesee and NY listserves, eBird, BOS 1 Call, and WNY Text Alert. This is a great bird for Western New York, and likely a life bird for many local birders. In addition, please adhere to the ABA's birding ethics: be considerate of the bird (i.e. try not to approach too closely, consider not broadcasting calls), be considerate of other birders, stay on trails, etc. You can view the full code here: http://www.aba.org/about/ethics.html A few final words. Better birders than I suspect the woodpecker may have been around for some time (and hopefully will reappear and stick around - earlier this year, a Black-backed Woodpeckerny was seen in Boston, MA for several months). Reinstein Woods Nature Preserve is located at 93 Honorine Dr, Depew, NY, 14043. Best of luck if you head out for the bird! [nysbirds-l] Tifft NP, Buffalo 4/14/15
A walk through Tifft Nature Preserve this evening provided a nice view of an American Bittern (Sarah Morris mentioned the bittern as she and her class from Canisius were leaving Tifft - thanks for the heads up). The bird perhaps 15 yards from Heritage Boardwalk, that is until quarreling geese caused it to move 75 yards out into the marsh. The class also had a Yellow-rumped Warbler (I did not). Passerines included a Northern Mockingbird, a Blue-gray Gnatcatcher, and nice selection of sparrows, with at least: 1 Eastern Towhee, 1 American Tree Sparrow, 2 Chipping Sparrows, 11 Song Sparrows, 2 Swamp Sparrows and 12 Dark-eyed Juncos. I was able to see the Ross's Goose found yesterday by Jim Pawlicki and Bill Watson at Beaver Island SP (Grand Island, NY). The bird was on the manicured swimming beach towards the marina. When I saw the bird it was in a group of gulls (mostly Ring-billed, but Herring and Boneparte's also present on the beach). The much larger deep-pink leg caught my eye, and then the bird was easy to pick out from the gulls with which the goose was associating. I was able to view 3 pipits at the park as well. [nysbirds-l] Forster's Tern - Erie County 9/2/14
Yesterday I had a juvenile Forster's Tern at Hamburg Town Park, along with 38 Boneparte's, 122 Ring-Billed and 16 Herring Gulls. This past Sunday I observed a juvenile Cooper's Hawk fly low along the edge of the cattail marsh at Times Beach. The bird flushed 2 Spotted Sandpipers - one of which dove into the water to avoid capture! The bird popped up and flew away after being submerged for 2-4 seconds - I have never observed this sort of behavior in a Spotty of any other shorebird species. [nysbirds-l] Shorebirds at Woodlawn Beach SP
This time of year I try to head to Woodlawn Beach SP for shorebirds - often the numbers are low, but occasionally something interesting can be found. Shorebirds seem to prefer the area where the creeks enter Lake Erie. The wooded portions of Woodlawn are also good for small passerines from late August through early October - I suggest using insect repellent as the mosquitoes have been brutal as of late! This week I had the following shorebirds: Wed, Aug 20 2 Semipalmated Plover, 5 Killdeer, 1 Spotted sandpiper, 1 American Woodcock Fri, Aug 22 3 Killdeer, 1 Sanderling Sat, Aug 23 4 Semipalmated Plover, 16 Killdeer, 1 Semipalmated Sandpiper Joe Fell Buffalo, NY joetf1...@aol.com -- NYSbirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/nysbirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/NYSBirds-L 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/NYSB.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --

[nysbirds-l] Clay-colored Sparrow - Forest Lawn - Buffalo
I had a Clay-colored Sparrow at Forest Lawn Cemetery earlier this afternoon. The bird was seen briefly near Mirror Lake. There is a large weeping willow across the road from the Birge Memorial - on the lake side of the road (the Birge Memorial is the round structure of columns near the NE corner of Mirror Lake). There are many Chipping Sparrows, and at least one Field Sparrow in this area - you may have to look through a lot of other sparrows. This bird is more gray-brown, and the median stripe is very distinct. Dennis Gralak had many warblers earlier - I think I was able to re-find most, including: Yellow, Palm, Yellow-rumped, Black-and-white, Nashville, Black-throated Blue. I believe he had Blue-headed and Warbling Vireos as well. I may have heard Pine Siskins, but I am not positive, and I did not see any in the short time I was there. [nysbirds-l] La Salle Park - Buffalo, NY 11/27
After work I took a quick detour through LaSalle Park - nothing unusual seen on the water, but I did have a large falcon pass through. It looked like it could possibly have been a Gyrfalcon (but as in the noted below, I was not confident in making that call). The first of season Snow Buntings were also nice to see. Good birding! Joe Fell Buffalo, NY large falcon sp. (Falco sp. (large falcon sp.)) 1 Not sure if this could have been a Gyrfalcon or Peregrine Falcon; seemed a lighter gray than I would expect for Peregrine. The bird came through shortly after I made the turn along the shore. It passed by relatively low, perhaps 2/3 the height of the pumping house - it flew from behind the pumping house on towards Rotary Park and then out of sight. It gained altitude as it got farther from me. I did not get a great view, and I have yet to see a Gyrfalcon, so I would not be confident making that call (however I do see Peregrine Falcons fairly often - this bird struck me as different). Total observation time was perhaps 30 seconds. [nysbirds-l] ELEGANT TERN - Buffalo, NY
NY and ON Birders, It appears that the ELEGANT TERN has been seen again this morning on the north end of Squaw Island (Buffalo, NY). Also seen recently in the area are Common Terns, Black-legged Kittiwake, Franklin's Gull and Little Gull. These birds are all associating with the large numbers of Boneparte's Gulls that are on the Upper Niagara River this time of year. For directions, use Google Maps and search for "Squaw Island, Buffalo, NY". Best of luck if you head out! I did not see Jim Pawlicki's message yesterday stating that there are 2 Franklin's Gulls at Squaw Island. Both birds were present earlier at the south end of the island (i.e. the foot of Ferry St). One appeared to be in a more advanced state of molting that the other (1 was darker with a more intact hood, the other bird had a white crown). [nysbirds-l] Buckhorn Island SP, Grand Island 2/16/13
In addition to the expected waterfowl and other birds, a trip to Buckhorn Island SP today yeilded 2 Great Horned Owls (one called, another responded), 1 Common Redpoll and 1 White-winged Crossbill. The owls were not in the park proper, but somewhere to the south. Both finches were feeding on Alder cones on the ground at the concrete bridge crossing what I believe is Woods Creek. That being said, anyone heading to Buckhorn Island should keep in mind the trails were largely covered in ice and pretty slippery.
Goat Island SP - Several duck species - Bufflehead, Common Goldeneye, Mallard, Black Duck and Gadwall - no Aythya sp. seen near Goat Island. Quite a few gulls - thousands of Ring-billed and Herring Gulls, 25+ Greater Black-backed Gulls, 1 each Iceland, Thayer's and Lesser Black-backed (the later 3 birds were seen in the rapids between Goat Island and Niagara Falls, NY). Many more gulls and ducks were in Canadian waters. [nysbirds-l] Niagara County Sunday 1/6/13 and Tonawanda Raven 1/5
Sunday 1/6 was not great weather, but headed out with Jim Horn, HM bateman and Alec Humann for Bohemian Waxwings in Newfane (Lake Rd between the Christian Camp and the Water Treatment Plant - on the south side of the road). Alec had once upon arrival and Jim was able to find another among the 160+ Cedar Waxwings. Also seen were 9 Common Redpoll among other birds. Alec and I headed out to Golden Hill SP and then headed back west. The more interesting birds included 5 Northern Flickers on Hartland Rd near the power plant in Barker. 1 Iceland Gull at Wilson Harbor. Hulbert Rd yeilded 360 or so Snow Buntings. No pine Warbler on Dietz Rd (although we didn't look terribly long). Ft Niagara had 4 White-winged Scoters, 2 Mute Swans, 2 Golden-crowned Kinglets and at least 4 very uncooperative White-winged Crossbills. On Saturday, 1/5 I had a lone Common Raven on River Rd in Tonawanda. I heard the bird before I saw it - it was fairly close to the Grand Island Bridge. The bird landed briefly on the landfill mounds on the west (inland) side of River Rd, and then cross over and flew along the river side of the road on the east side of the trees before heading out of sight around the LaFarge Plant. That being said, I try to hit that area fairly regularly (several times per month), and this is the 2nd time I have been able to see a Raven in the vicinity. Happy New Year! [nysbirds-l] Western Kingbird, Yates, Orleans County
I headed out of work early to try to catch up with the Western Kingbird reported this morning by Brett Ewald. Kayo Roy and Drew Campbell were the only other birders at the location while I was there (5:30 - 6:00 pm). We located the bird after about 5 minutes of looking - initially on Fire Lane 41B, and then on Lakeshore Rd (note that some of these Fire Lanes are marked private, some are not). Kayo took several photos of the bird. Thanks to Brett for quickly posting the sighting, and to all others adding updates. Good luck to anyone searching for it tomorrow! [nysbirds-l] Tifft Nature Preserve, Buffalo NY 8/30/12
Just a quick stop between work and school. The exposed mud at Tifft has been great for shorebirds - lots of peeps the past few weeks and some other interesting birds showing up [should anything interesting show up at Tifft, feel free to call or shoot me a text at (716) 239-1508]. As a side note, has anyone thought of using Twitter to get out local bird reports? I don't use it, but I think it would be a great way to get sightings out to a lot of people quickly. [nysbirds-l] Erie County 4/12/12
I did not post these sightings yesterday, but had some good birds while on the road yesterday. Highlights were: Squaw Island: Bald Eagle - adult flying out over the river. Rich Marine: 2 Common Terns Buckhorn Island SP: Marsh Wren - East Overlook area. Seems awfully early to me. Mid River Marina: American Kestrel Common Raven - I had been hoping to run into this bird for a few weeks now. Initially it was on one of the electric towers next door, but then flew over to the marina and landed on a utility pole. It was nice to see it in flight, and pretty close when on the pole (about 75 yards away). [nysbirds-l] Iroquois omission and more 3/17/12
I had forgotten to mention Alec spotted an Osprey in Ringneck Marsh - and also a single Snowy Owl at the airport in Niagara Falls. I headed out to Tifft this evening, and was directed to a Black-crowned Night Heron by a woman who I think works or volunteers at the preserve (I didn't catch her name, but thank you for the 1st of the year bird). Other birds were much the same as have been present over the past week or two - although the blackbirds seemed to be scattering into very small flocks or individuals. After leaving Tifft I decided to head to Beaver Island to see if I could hear any Woodcock, and I was able to catch up with two (and a possible third bird). [nysbirds-l] Iroquois 3/17/12
Headed out to Iroquois today with Jim Horn, HM Bateman, and Alec Humann. Nice weather brought out a lot wildlife: muskrats, Painted Turtles, Garter Snakes, Commas (butterfly). I was really hoping to see the Eurasian Wigeon, but no luck. Highlights include: Numerous Northern Shovelers, American Wigeon, Ring-necked Ducks, and of course Canada Geese throughout. Pied-billed Grebe, American Coot, Lesser Scaup, Canvasback, Ruddy Duck, Bufflehead, Green-winged Teal, Northern Pintail were all present at the Cayuga Overlook (some of the aforementioned ducks were also seen elsewhere in Iroquois). Songbirds included many of the usual suspects as well as Northern Shrike, Purple Finch, and a Siskin (I missed that one but Alec had it near the Kanyoo Trail parking lot). These birds were seen in along the Feeder Rd. 2 Sandhill Cranes also flew from Kumpf Marsh over into Tonawanda WMA. They were very vocal, and gave up less than thrilling views, but were still great to see.
