[nysbirds-l] Late report: Green-winged Teal. FOS on 12/24,Sunday and beautiful views of Rusty Blackbird (F) @ Blind/Turtle Pond on Monday with Paul

2017-12-27 Thread Patricia Pollock

above seen on Sunday, 12/24  SE pumphouse on dyke with cluster of other birds:
No. Shovelers, etc.
I saw it with Andrew Rubenstein about 1:30-2 pm.  Andrew heard about it from
Joanne Wassmer; I saw it swimming in the area from eastside of pumphouse, lost
it, walked to westsidewhere Andrew had arrived and we saw gfreenwing, head
tucked in .
No one reported it..Junko went out to find it and as far as I know, she didn't
find it.  I went on Mon. and didn't find it in that area.  I went to Turtle
Pond and saw the Rusty with Paul.

[nysbirds-l] Central Park - a late report

2017-01-25 Thread Patricia Pollock
I couldn't get to a computer to report
5 Ring-necked Ducks (M) @ Reservoir 1/22/17 Sun. about 1:30pm.

The weather and not being well kept me from returning.
I've been waiting for a Ring-neck duck all season.
1/20/17 Fri., an odd duck appeared swimming with a flock of Ruddies.  It's head
was entirely white and the back and wings were splotched with dull red, the
breast a solid dull reddish color.Another Birder, Carl, was observing this
anomyly from another side of NW corner.  I looked for the birds later but never
saw it again.  Carl and I thought it was a leucistic Ruddy Duck.

[nysbirds-l] Central Park Bird Report

2015-05-06 Thread Patricia Pollock
Wednesday, 5/6/15Pat Pollock
Some of the highlights for me today:Bird of day and view of the day:
Baybreasted Warbler @ Oak Bridge/Upper Lobe.  Charles Colwell & David (from
London)shared the close, detailed viewing of the Baybreasted after putting in
much time chasing it at tree tops and around the Upper Lobe.and Blue-winged
Warbler bathing in the Gill about 11 amand I was happy to see a lovely Palm
still about @ Warbler Rockand to catch the Summer Tanager (which I missed on
Tuesday) flying low near Warbler Rock and Rivieraa lovely view of Woodthrush on
a log in same wooded area and lst sighting of Swainson Thrush @ Tripletts Br.2
Black-crowned Night Herons on LakeHairy Woodpecker @ Evodia Field SW corner  I
had many of the warblers listed by Chris & Joe DiC, 16 warblers for the day
Chris' estimate of 23 warblers today is increased by l, the Blue-Winged bathing
in the Gill.

The old reliables are still there (let's hope til CBC on 12/14/14):  2
Ringed-neck Ducks still in SE corner of Res.'counted 14 Hooded Mergansers,
mostly along eastside, several American Coots, 10 Buffleheads and lots of
Ruddies & No. Shovelerschecked Canada Geese for small one - negative; checked
for Lesser Scaup of yesterday without success.  The workers are moving further
along westside, so even harder to take in ducks congregating @ north end.

[nysbirds-l] Reservoir/Central Park Bird Report (mystery goose)

2014-12-02 Thread Patricia Pollock
12/2/14, TuesdayPat Pollock
@ 1:00 pm, in the snow/rain saw a small goose among Canada geese.  Can't find a
match so far.  Closest was an immature Brant:  goose in question has dark head,
no white chinstrap, dark neck and chest.  Below it is white on belly, marked
with vertical streaks on flank and very white to rear; dark above, very small
alongside the Canada flock.  They were in NE section and close enough in I
could see the small goose's eye which was dark and blended with the small head
and small bill.I hoped the internet would display some hybrids, but cdn't find
a likeness. If anybody  else was out in the wretched weather today and saw that
small goose, please call me or put it on Ebirds/ NYS (NO Common Merganser today
in north, middle & west sides of Reservoir)12 Hooded Mergansers, several
American Coots2 Ringed-neck Ducks in NE corner8  Buffleheads(NO Pied-billed
Grebe that I cd see)
on Monday, 12/1/14Common Merganser in center of line of seagulls moving north &
south & frequently under water1st bird of day was Ruby-crowned Kinglet on
retaining wall in brush, 10 Buffleheads, 2 R-N-Ducks eastside, Am. Coots,
Yellow-bellied Sapsucker Pinetum, Red bel. W.P., White-breasted Nuthatch
on Sunday, 11/30/14Upper Lobe 3 Fox Sparrows near rock @ north entranceand
quite a few assorted finches in Sweetgum trees:  Goldfinches,House finches,
Junko showed us (f) Purple Finch along Mugger's Walk earlier Frank Rutella
spotted 1st Hermit Thrush I'd seen for a # of days, and a Yellow-bellied

[nysbirds-l] Central Park Bird Report

2014-11-14 Thread Patricia Pollock
11/14/14, Friday
Pat Pollock

Pied-billed Grebe close to west pumphouse north end of Reservoir
1 American Coot
on west/south sides no other surprises; mostly No. Shovelers, Ruddies, Can.
Geese, Mallards, and usual gulls as far as I could tell.

Unfortunately, little work is being done on the now torn up north stretch of
the Reservoir - no workers around today, and the 2 I I saw yesterday were
having an early lunch - never saw anyone working there after they dug up the
track and erected fences so we can't bird along that stretch. I called the
79th St. Yard, l/w, no one got back to me.

[nysbirds-l] Central Park Bird Report - 3 (m) Ringed-neck Ducks

2014-11-12 Thread Patricia Pollock
11/12/14 Wednesday
Pat Pollock

3 Ringed-neck (M) Ducks in NE section of Reservoir seen by me @ 11:20 am.
In addition 2 American Coots
16 Buffleheads
11 Gadwalls
many No. Shovelers and Ruddy Ducks
Haven't seen Hooded Mergansers for a few days
John Beauchamp said he saw 6 Monday, 11/10 on eastside - I didn't find any
later in the day
11/10 Mon.: Palm W., Golden-crowned Kinglets 4, Pinetum
91st/West Drive 2 beautiful (M) Brown-headed Cowbirds

Yesterday afternoon went to Inwood - didn't find Dickcissel - others the same.
If you go I suggest bringing seed and distributing in cement areas cement
There are well over a hundred sparrows feeding along there, and being
disturbed, flying off, up into the trees.
As for Woodcock, went there, too, w/o success - a loud smelly stifling
atmosphere. Cd't locate the bird.

9/26/14, Friday
Pat Pollock

Sorry so late - didn't have computer time. Blue Grosbeak in maintenance field
on Friday, south end near aster bushes & poke berries - also seen by Bob Ruvello
Blue Grosbeak was on little path east of regular woodchip path to Main. Fld.
Then a Black Throated Blue warbler arrived in same small space, much smaller
than large blue Gros-beak (6-3/4"). Considering whether this was Indigo
Bunting, discarded because Indigo is same size as Blk thr Blue W. (5-1/2").
Blue Grosbeak was overall deep blue with wing fringes dull golden, head not
visible.
