[nysbirds-l] Pelham Bay Park 4/24 Short-eared Owl and Blue Grosbeak
Hi All, Late in the afternoon on 4/24, Patrick Horan and I photographed a Short-eared Owl as it headed north over the Pelham Landfill. There was also an adult male Blue Grosbeak. The birds were seen from the gravel road along the southwest side of the landfill. The Grosbeak was in view very briefly, but I got some bad photos before it was chased off by a Red-winged Blackbird. I could not relocate the bird after that, but I don't think it left the area, so it's possible the bird may continue there. https://ebird.org/atlasny/checklist/S86302252 Good Birding! [nysbirds-l] Pelham Bay Park White-winged Dove exact location 11/23
Hi All, The WWDO was with a small group of MODO here (red marker): https://www.google.com/maps/d/edit?mid=z29s-1cUqsBQ.krfpVPNpudbg=sharing Keep in mind there is no access to this landfill. Easily viewed from the bike path along Shore Rd./Pelham Pkwy where it was initially found. The bird was still there when we left at ~1615. I'd recommend parking at Rice Stadium parking lot (marked with a "P" on the map) and then heading to the location on foot. [nysbirds-l] Pelham Bay Park - Bronx 11/29, 11/30
Hi All, The past couple days at Pelham Bay Park have been quite birdy. Highlights include a Baltimore Oriole which Jared Cole spotted today in the row of cedars along the landfill just south of the Pelham bridge. The day before, in those same trees, was a Blue-headed Vireo which we could not relocate today. On 11/29, in the small saltmarsh northwest of the landfill, I flushed a Wilson's Snipe. Other uncommon species included American Woodcock, Orange-crowned Warbler, American Pipit, Field Sparrow, and White-crowned Sparrow. [nysbirds-l] 8/17 JBWR East Pond - Dickcissel, Caspian Tern
Hi All, Jared Cole and I walked the length of the east shore of the East Pond of Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge this afternoon starting at the south entrance about 45 mins after peak high tide. The highlights included a Caspian Tern first seen resting on the west shore about half-way between the raunt and the island. It was then re-found on the beach at low tide on the bayshore opposite the north end of the pond. Along the gravel road at the north end, we were excited to stumble upon a female? Dickcissel. The gate that leads onto the gravel road off Cross Bay Blvd was closed and locked, and I'm not sure if it's possible to walk around it, so keep that in mind if you want to try for that bird. The water level on the pond was still somewhat high and some parts were sticky especially toward the north side, but we had no problems with knee-high rubber boots. Shorebird numbers and diversity were very disappointing. [nysbirds-l] Ft. Tilden/Breezy Point, Queens - 1/12
Hi All, Thanks to a ride from David Burg, Jared and Michelle Cole and I spent a great 3.5 hours in Breezy Point and environs this afternoon. Our plan was to explore the beach to the Breezy Point jetty and then bird along the dune trail. Little did we know that scanning a ~1K stretch of ocean between Ft. Tilden and the point would end up occupying almost our entire visit while providing plenty of excitement. The highlights included a Razorbill foraging quite close to shore among the many Long-tailed Ducks, an Iceland Gull also close to shore and last but not least, an adult Black-headed Gull. All were seen in the same general area described above. Unfortunately we could not get a photo of the latter, but the definite red bill, bright red feet and bulkier-than-Bonaparte's appearance were all obvious. Perhaps this is the same bird recently seen along the Brooklyn coast? http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist?subID=S16354403 Good Birding,Richard Aracil -- NYSbirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/nysbirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/NYSBirds-L 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/NYSB.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --

[nysbirds-l] Bronx: Pelham Bay Park 12/18, 20
Hi All, Today Jack Rothman and I did about 3 hours of scanning the Sound from Orchard Beach, Twin and Two Tree Islands in the northeastern corner of Pelham Bay Park. Highlights included nice numbers of Greater Scaup and Brant (~1500 and ~800, respectively), a female Black Scoter continues off the beach, and there were few Long Tailed Ducks. Between Hunter and Twin Islands, Jack spotted a Semipalmated Plover, which would be a good CW if we don't get one on Sunday's CBC. On 12/18, I had 4 Purple Sandpipers on the rocks off Pea Island, there was a lone Canvasback between Hunter and Twin and a White-winged Scoter was seen in flight. On both days, the near complete lack of both loons was unusual. Briefly went through Turtle Cove at the end of the day where at least 1 Red-headed Woodpecker continues. http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist?subID=S16031810http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist?subID=S16016346 Good BirdingRichard Aracil -- NYSbirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/nysbirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/NYSBirds-L 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/NYSB.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --

[nysbirds-l] Pelham Bay Park Bronx - 11/9
Hi All, Yesterday during a Parks Deptartment-led walk on the Pelham Landfill, highlights included flyovers of 5-6 each of American Pipit and Horned Larks, plus a flock of about 30 Snow Buntings. After the walk, I birded around the park for rest of the day. In the area northwest of the landfill (https://mapsengine.google.com/map/edit?mid=zQd_065mT4Pg.k4ZYg52ZjsWo), there is another (or maybe one from Turtle Cove came over?) immature Red-Headed Woodpecker. Over in Turtle Cove, at least one adult Red-headed continues. I did not search around to see if there were still others in the area. On Eastchester Bay, I had my FOS Horned Grebes, Hooded Merganser and Gadwall for the park and there was a Clapper Rail, which I inadvertently flushed while I was on the marsh peninsula south of City Is. Rd. http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist?subID=S15625693http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist?subID=S15625844http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist?subID=S15628588http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist?subID=S15628856http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist?subID=S15629006 Richard Aracil -- NYSbirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/nysbirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/NYSBirds-L 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/NYSB.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --

[nysbirds-l] Pelham Bay Park, Bronx. - 30 Oct.
Hello, Started at the "Southern Zone" of Pelham Bay Park this morning where highlights included a late male BLACK-THROATED BLUE WARBLER feeding from a Sapsucker well and a very late HY WHITE-EYED VIREO. We also had our FOS RUSTY BLACKBIRD. In the afternoon, we headed to the Turtle Cove section. There, a really late OVENBIRD was the highlight. Plus, one NELSON'S SPARROW continues in that same area south of City Island Road and the VESPER SPARROW was still there in the barren area inside the southeast corner of the driving range. Jack Rothman also found a BLACK-THROATED BLUE WARBLER near the start of the woodchip trail from the parking lot at Turtle Cove. I then made my way to the strip running the east side of Orchard Beach Lagoon where I found another VESPER SPARROW. On the lagoon, there were 4 GREEN-WINGED TEAL and 88 AMERICAN BLACK DUCKS both of which, ebird flagged as high. [nysbirds-l] Pelham Bay Park, Bronx - 10/29
Hi All, Had a productive 4 hours in the Turtle Cove section of Pelham Bay Park. Highlights included 2-3 NELSON'S SPARROWS still in the same spot I've been seeing them (marshy peninsula south of City Island Road). There was a VESPER SPARROW foraging in the patch of bare dirt with scattered weeds inside the southeast corner of the driving range fence. In the same area along the northern woodchip path, an adult RED-HEADED WOODPECKER continues. I briefly heard the calls of an unseen COMMON RAVEN. As it was starting to get dark, a calling WILSON'S SNIPE flew over me as I stood on the berm trail of Turtle Cove. In the easternmost section of saltmarsh grass in Turtle Cove, I saw a rail flush up twice above the Spartina, but both times were too brief and dark for me to ID before the bird dropped back down. Emanating from the grass right where this bird disappeared, I heard vocalizations I was unfamiliar with. You can hear these squeaky calls in the video linked here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/richsoutbirding/10567390115/ I think these vocalizations match particularly well with these Virginia Rail calls: http://xeno-canto.org/14 see further notes in the ebird checklist linked below. I have never heard a Virginia Rail in the field, so I welcome anyone's input on this! http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist?subID=S15523112 Good Birding,Richard Aracil -- NYSbirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/nysbirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/NYSBirds-L 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/NYSB.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --

[nysbirds-l] Pelham Bay Park 10/23. Nelson's, Scoters, Red-headed Woodpeckers
Hi All, This afternoon I birded Turtle Cove, Orchard Beach Lagoon and the Marsh south of City Island Road. I started in Turtle Cove were I had two RED-HEADED WOODPECKERS in their usual haunts. As I birded the Lagoon, I saw what I'm pretty sure was a third Red-headed east of the crew tower. I first heard then saw this bird briefly as it was flying away from me toward the Orchard Beach bus terminal. I believe this is the second adult Red-headed that other birders have seen associating with the one in Turtle Cove. In the same patch of Spartina south of City Island Road, I again had NELSON'S SPARROWS. This time, there were definitely three individuals. Out on Eastchester Bay, I saw what I'm pretty sure are the same SURF SCOTERS and BLACK SCOTERS I had on 10/19. This time however, they were joined by two more Surf Scoters for a total of 4 of each species. As I was leaving, a flock of about 340 of what I'm assuming were Tree Swallows passed above me. Unfortunately, all were sihlouettes as it was getting dark; I could not see any plumage details. http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist?subID=S15479721http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist?subID=S15479612http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist?subID=S15479498 Good Birding!Richard Aracil -- NYSbirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/nysbirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/NYSBirds-L 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/NYSB.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --

Hi All, Had a nice day at Pelham Bay Park, where I spent the whole day in the Turtle Cove section. [nysbirds-l] Pelham Bay Park, 14 Oct - Nelson's Sparrow.
Hi All, In addition to the Red-headed Woodpeckers seen by others today, I had 3-4 Sharp-tailed Sparrows in the peninsula of salt marsh just south of Turtle Cove and City Island Rd. One of the birds was definitely an Atlantic Nelson's, and I think one (see bad photos and notes in checklist linked below) was the interior subspecies. Still learning these birds, so I kept it as Sharp-tailed sp., but I'm totally open to other's input. I only got fleeting glimpses of the other 1-2. http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist?subID=S15409259 Good Birding!Rich Aracil -- NYSbirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/nysbirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/NYSBirds-L 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/NYSB.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --

One of the birds was definitely an Atlantic Nelson's, and I think one (see bad photos and notes in checklist linked below) was the interior subspecies. Still learning these birds, so I kept it as Sharp-tailed sp., but I'm totally open to other's input. I only got fleeting glimpses of the other 1-2. http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist?subID=S15409259 Good Birding!Rich Aracil -- NYSbirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/nysbirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/NYSBirds-L 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/NYSB.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --
[nysbirds-l] Pelham Bay Park 10/8 - 2 Red-headed Woodpeckers
Hi All, Today in the Turtle Cove section of Pelham Bay Park, Jack Rothman and I had 2 RED-HEADED WOODPECKERS; a juvenile was in the area between the driving range and the Cove, while an adult was seen northwest of the range near the end of the wood chip path. Other highlights from the area included a CLAPPER RAIL and 11 warbler species including a male BAY-BREASTED WARBLER. [nysbirds-l] Pelham Bay Park Red-Headed Woodpecker - Oct 5
Hi All, In addition to Andrew's post, in the area west of the steel bridge in Turtle Cove on the wood chip path behind the driving range, a RED-HEADED WOODPECKER continues. I also had a calling COMMON RAVEN. [nysbirds-l] Bronx: Nesting Common Ravens - Co-Op City
Hi All, Since early Feb, I have seen the Raven pair hanging around 120 Elgar Place and surrounding areas. On Feb 12, I saw one of the birds carrying a twig up to the top of the building they used last year. I have seen them with material 3 more times since then up until Feb 17 when I had to leave NY for work. I will not be around to check up on them, so if anyone's interested in spending some time monitoring, it would be cool to determine the fate of this year's nesting attempt. If you go, I would recommend a scope as the birds are over 32 stories up. This is a map that shows the nest location and a good viewing spot: http://goo.gl/maps/RNrx1 Good Birding! [nysbirds-l] Bronx: Pelham Bay Park - Red-necked Grebe, C. Ravens 2/10
Hi All, Scanning the Sound from Orchard Beach produced some good stuff. Highlights included a Red-necked Grebe, 2 White-winged Scoters, 2 Long-tailed Ducks. Good number of both loons and Common Goldeneyes, 12 Harbor Seals out on the rocks. A Common Raven was heard but not seen. This past week, I have been seeing a common Raven Pair hanging around Co-Op City. Yesterday, I walked by 120 Elgar Place and saw one of the pair perched at the nest site they used last year. http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist?subID=S12924052 http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist?subID=S12923451 Good Birding, Richard Aracil -- NYSbirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/nysbirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/NYSBirds-L 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/NYSB.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --
[nysbirds-l] 1/15 Edith Read Sanctuary and Pelham Bay Park
Hi All, Jack Rothman and I checked out Edith Read Sanctuary in Rye, NY and had some nice highlights. Scanning from the beach south of Playland Pond, we found 1 Razorbill, over 400 Long-tailed Ducks, ~20 White-winged Scoters, 13 Black Scoters and 2 Purple Sandpipers. On Playland Lake and environs, highlights included 12 Canvasback, and an American Pipit. After that, I checked the Orchard Beach/Twin Is. area of PB Park where I had 3 Long-tailed Ducks, 1 White-winged Scoter, and 1 Dunlin. http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist?subID=S12616574 http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist?subID=S12616819 http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist?subID=S12616921 http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist?subID=S12616364 Good Birding, Richard -- NYSbirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/nysbirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/NYSBirds-L 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/NYSB.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --

Despite the fog, managed to find 3 Canvasback in with a raft of scaup against the shore of High Island, A White-winged Scoter fairly close to shore affording great looks, a lone Dunlin on the beach, and around 190 Common Goldeneye which is the most I've ever seen at this location. [nysbirds-l] 12/21/12 Clay-colored Sparrow? Pelham Bay Park, Bronx.
Hello, Had what I'm almost certain was a CLAY-COLORED SPARROW in the narrow strip of lawn and reedy vegetation between Orchard Beach Lagoon and the parking lot. I don't have a lot of experience with this species (If it is CCSP, only my 2nd.), so wanted to bounce photos off others on the list before I call it. Sorry, the following photos are crummy, but I think they show field marks good for this species. While observing in the field, I noted the overall pale straw-colored upperparts, prominent gray nape, prominent buff supercilium, eyeline stopping at rear of eye, pale unmarked lores and contrasting whitish malar set off by dark mustache and throat stripes. The breast and flanks looked brownish-gray to me and not terribly buffy. I was unable to get the rump color. The map in the following links show exactly where the bird was seen. Photos: http://www.flickr.com/photos/richsoutbirding/8295951284/in/photostream/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/richsoutbirding/8295961854/in/photostream/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/richsoutbirding/8295967312/in/photostream/ Yesterday, the Turtle Cove Section of the Park was also quite productive. Highlights there included a flyover pair of Common Raven, 2 Woodcocks inadvertently flushed, at least 6 Rusty Blackbirds and a Brown Thrasher. All birds were seen in the brushy open woodland between the cove and the driving range. [nysbirds-l] 12/9 C. Redpolls Pelham Bay Park, Bronx
Hi, Yesterday, I visited the Southern end of Pelham Bay Park where I was pleasantly surprised by a flock of 7 Common Redpolls. The flock was aloft most of the time and seemed to be roaming a wide area. The 7 disappeared and resurfaced a few times throughout my walk. Later on, I stumbled across an 8th Redpoll foraging busily in a patch of mugwort. Unfortunately, this bird looked a little under the weather as it only flushed a few feet when I initially found it (almost walked into it!), twice was seen briefly huddling in the roots of an upturned shrub and seemed to be "panting" a bit. [nysbirds-l] Pelham Bay Park, Bronx 12/6: C. Redpoll and Highlights.
Hi All, Spent around 2.5 hours in the Turtle Cove section of Pelham Bay Park yesterday. When I first arrived, I had a pair of Common Ravens mobbing a Red-tailed Hawk (I'm guessing the same pair that nested on a building in co-op? I've been consistently seeing a pair in the park throughout November). In the mostly matted Spartina, I heard and then saw well a late (Wintering?) Marsh Wren south of the metal bridge. In the overgrown, brushy woodland between the bridge and the driving range, I heard and saw a Common Redpoll as it flew in and perched momentarily at the top of a tree. A bit later on, I flushed an American Woodcock in the same area. [nysbirds-l] Pelham Bay Park and Co-Op City Ravens 3/10-11
Hello, Checked out Turtle Cove and the Orchard Beach Lagoon on Saturday. Highlights were a Brown Thrasher in the scrub between Turtle Cove and the driving range and a female Common Merganser on the lagoon. I watched the Ravens for about an hour this afternoon. From my vantage, the view is somewhat restricted; telling whether or not there is a bird on is not always easy and depends on what direction it's facing. From what I could tell, there was a bird on for at least 30 mins. At one point, I could have sworn I saw them swap places on the nest. Male incubation is not unheard of at least according to the BNA account. But again, views are not the greatest. Nothing like staring up at an apartment building with a spotting scope to make you look like a weirdo! [nysbirds-l] Bronx: Pelham Bay Park and Co-Op Common Ravens 3/5
Hello, Birded the Hunter Is. and the Turtle Cove area of the Park where highlights included 1 Purple Sandpiper, 3 American Oystercatchers, 1 Woodcock, 2 Great Cormorants, both loons. The Ravens continue 120 Elgar Place! I did not have too much activity during the ~30 minutes I watched, but I heard vocalizations and at one point, I could see a tail sticking off the nest. [nysbirds-l] Co-Op City Ravens 2/23
Hi All, Watched the pair for about an hour this afternoon. The nest is now substantial and some of the outer edge can be seen at the top of 120 Elgar Place. I saw no material carries (did see them carrying what I think were food items that were not brought to the nest) and I think they have completed construction. Saw the female (presumably) sitting on the nest for periods of 10-15 mins and it could be that she has already started a clutch, but not sure. [nysbirds-l] Common Raven possible nest building in Co-Op City, Bronx 2/11-2/12
Hi All, Yesterday, I once again saw a pair of Ravens from my window. The birds were flying back and forth between a patch of woods near the Pelham Bay Bridge and a neighboring building. Once I grabbed my binoculars, I saw that they were carrying sticks to the top of a building near my own! After running downstairs to get a better look, I again saw a raven with a twig, but lost the bird behind a building and did not see exactly where the stick was brought. After that, I saw the pair perched on the large structure housing a water tower atop 120 Elgar Place and saw them drive away a Red-tailed Hawk. I saw no further nesting activity aside from the birds consistently hanging around the same area at the top of 120 Elgar. Today, I briefly checked on them. I did not see any more material carries, but did see the pair again perched atop 120 Elgar. I have not yet seen a nest and if there is one, it could easily be hidden from view in that large structure. [nysbirds-l] Pelham Bay Park and Long Island Sound, Bronx - Common Ravens, Razorbill and more 2/10
Hi All, Started out at the Pelham Bay Bridge and Turtle Cove. Between the bridge and Goose Island, I was delighted to see a Common Raven flying southward before disappearing behind a building in Co-Op City. On 2/7, I saw a Pair of Ravens from my apt. window in the same area. Very cool. At Turtle Cove, highlights included a Great Egret (probably the same bird I've seen twice before since 1/9) and a flock of 17 Rusty Blackbirds feeding in a wet area between Turtle Cove and the driving range. I then made my way over to the northern end of Orchard Beach and the Twin Island area to scan the sound from the rock outcroppings on the east side of Twin. There, highlights were a single Razorbill, 2 Long-tailed Ducks, 4 White-winged Scoters and a Great Cormorant. [nysbirds-l] Pelham Bay Park, Bronx - Razorbill and others 2/6
Hi All, Had a great day in the Turtle Cove/Hunter Island section for the park. Highlights included a Razorbill seen well east of Twin Island, a flock of 20+ purple sandpipers on the rocks off Glen Island, 2 Long-Tailed Ducks and a Great Cormorant seen distantly off Twin and a Bald Eagle over the Orchard Beach Lagoon. [nysbirds-l] Queens Ash-throated Flycatcher - Yes
Hi All, The ATFL was seen well around 3:30 today in the usual spot in the lot surrounding the red brick building at the intersection of Cohancy and N. Conduit. It was seen and photographed well in the trees alongside the pink building. It took us about an hour of waiting before the bird finally surfaced. We did not see the Orange-crowned, but a Juv. Cooper's Hawk passed through the lot. I was with Jack Rothman and later joined by Arie Gilbert and Gene Loscalzo who and also got great views. [nysbirds-l] Directions - Ash-throated Flycatcher
Hello, Someone on nysbirds emailed me for directions to the ATFL site. I thought they were already posted to this list, but here they are just in case others did not get them: Heading west on the Belt pkwy, take exit 17N Cohancy St. (This is the exit just before the one for JBWR) and get over to your right. At the traffic light, (intersection of Cohancy and N. Conduit) follow the sign for Albert St. and make the first right on 99th pl. and loop around onto Cohancy. Cohancy is a one way street so you can't immediately turn onto it at the light. The bird was seen most often in the weedy lot surrounding the dilapidated red brick building at the intersection of Cohancy and N. Conduit but was also seen along the fence parallelling the A subway line as well as along the small patch of trees and lawn on the west side of 99th pl. Good luck if you go. [nysbirds-l] Queens Ash-throated Flycatcher Photos 11/22/09
Hi All, Here are some not-so-great shots of the Ash-throated Flycatcher found by Rudy Badia. Thanks to metro birding briefs, quite a few got to see the bird. I'm sure people got way better shots than this, but I thought I'd put these out there. www.flickr.com/photos/richsoutbirding The bird seemed particularly fond of this lot (copy and paste into google): 40.667585°, -73.834211° But also here: 40.668286°, -73.835545° If you go, please be careful crossing the busy streets. [nysbirds-l] Central Park 11/10
Hi All, Birded CPK from the Pinetum to the south end of the ramble and back again. Highlights included a scarlet tanager feeding in the honey locust overhanging the SW corner of Belvedere Castle. In the tall elms encircling the north end of the Pinetum, a pine warbler (not the greatest looks, but almost certain of the id) was foraging along with a red-breasted nuthatch and a myrtle warbler. 1-2 eastern bluebirds at the Upper Lobe. At Sparrow Rock, juncos were numerous and there was one field sparrow with them.
