On Wednesday morning Scott Baldinger found a swan at the Bashakill. It was
viewed from a great distance and we initially identified the bird as a Tundra
Swan. Once we were able to view many of the photos taken yesterday, we

TUFTED PUFFIN has been found among the Atlantic Puffin Colony on Machias Seal
Island off the coast of Jonesport Maine. The bird has been well photographed.

Though the Snow Goose flock at the Camel Farm took off this morning, they
returned in about an hour. Down to about 1,000 birds at this time, the Ross's
Goose was immediately spotted. They remained at the farm for the remainder of

Today I birded Westchester County. While scanning the beach and rocks at Rye
Town Park I spotted an unusual cormorant on the rocks. The bird had an
entirely white belly, throat, and chin. A defined line demarked the face,

The heavy rains put down a lot of birds in the county yesterday. There was
almost no detectable passerine movement, but Loons, Scoters, Cormorants etc as
well as a few shorebirds put in an appearance.

Many first of the year migrants have been coming through or arriving at the
Bashakill over the last couple of weeks. Highlights of these have been
American Bittern, Common Gallinule, Brown Thrashers (three pairs breeding
already) Pied-billed Grebes (already breeding) Rusty Blackbirds and an
I went out to try for Whips this evening, hoping they might be in early as so
many other species have been. I found three calling Whips on Pine Kill Road
in their usual spot. Also present were two Woodcock, a singing Winter Wren

The White-winged Crossbills put on a nice show this morning for many
observers. The males were singing and one did a Courtship Flight display.
They were feeding right along the road. Many Pine Siskins were present as

observers. The males were singing and one did a Courtship Flight display.
They were feeding right along the road. Many Pine Siskins were present as

First, congratulations to Dave Rankin on such a great find. Secondly, I am
surprised no one has made comment on this bird. It would as far as I can tell
be a first record for New York. The photos are clearly a Gray-crowned
Rosy-finch, and the timing is perfect for a vagrant of this species.
