[nysbirds-l] Franklin's Gull + Baird's Sandpiper - Staten Island

Howard Fischer and I just had a Franklin's Gull fly over Miller Field on
Staten Island. It was last seen flying south along the shore with two
Laughing Gulls-

The Baird's Sandpiper had also returned to the puddle in front of the
airplane hangar-

[nysbirds-l] Franklin's Gull update - not seen - Suffolk County

Just an update about Taylor's excellent find of an adult Franklin's Gull at 
Crab Meadow beach, Northport, Suffolk County.

Taylor found it around 8 AM this morning. Others arrived around 11 and did not 
see it, and several of us checked from about 4-7 and it was not seen. Taylor 
has been checking since the original sighting a few days ago, and this morning 
was the only subsequent sighting.

But hopefully it's in the area

[nysbirds-l] FRANKLIN'S GULL - Northport, Suffolk Co.

Hello!!
At 8:00 pm (high tide) an adult FRANKLIN'S GULL was loafing with around 20
Laughing Gulls on the close sandbar at Crab Meadow Beach in Northport,
Suffolk County.
After just a few minutes, the birds were flushed by a group of small kids
and they all flew strongly west.  I stayed until it was getting too dark to
see but they didn't come back.
I'm not aware of how early they start charging at this beach, but it costs
$30.00 to get in when they are (free with a Town of Huntington Beach Pass).

[nysbirds-l] Franklin's Gull, shorebirds - Niagara and Orleans Counties

After the drenching rain this morning, Joel Strong and I got out to look
over the fields to see what shorebirds, if any, had dropped in. 

 

On Youngstown-Wilson Road, just west of Fitch, there were:

75 Dunlin

11 Least Sandpipers

3 White-rumped Sandpipers

100 Semipalmated Sandpipers

18 Short-billed Dowitchers

2 Spotted Sandpipers

 

On the Lower Lake Road - Burgess Road join, there were:

2 American Wigeon

1 Semipalmated Plover

56 Dunlin

1 Least Sandpiper

1 White-rumped Sandpiper

46 Semipalmated Sandpipers

9 Short-billed Dowitchers

2 dowitcher species (possibly Long-billed)

The highlight here was a FRANKLIN'S GULL with a few hundred Ring-billed and
Herring Gulls. Unfortunately, it did not stay long, as an immature Bald
Eagle came over and all the gulls flew off. It was probably a second-cycle
bird, though possibly an adult that had not yet molted in its hood. Poor

On the Orleans County side of Niagara-Orleans Countyline Road, there were:

4 Black-bellied Plovers

75 Dunlin

2 dowitcher species (seen very briefly)

[nysbirds-l] Franklin's Gull Broome County Dorchester Park/Whitney Point Dam Area May 6th, 2017

This morning Jim Hoteling found a strange gull with a hood and red bill at
Dorchester Park Whitney Point Dam area. Initial thoughts were a LAUGHING
GULL since we have had one before here. George Chiu got up there before me
and he was thinking FRANKLIN'S GULL instead. As I was about 5 minutes away
I get a text with the dreaded  "the bird flew". How many times does this
happen to you? Anyway, George and Jim tracked the bird as it flew over the
dam and dropped. The Whitney Point Elementary School with its ball fields
are on the other side. So I went there instead of Dorchester and when I saw
bunch of RING-BILLED GULLs on the ball field my excitement peaked, and it
was an easy find. I noticed the thick eye-rings first, smaller bill and
size and I agreed with George's assessment. Looked good for a FRANKLIN'S
GULL, a first county ebird record and possibly first county record!!!  I
texted an image to an all-out expert I know from the Cornell Lab of
Ornithology and he also agreed.

The bird was foraging and eating a bunch of earthworms. He was having a
feast since it was very wet and there were earthworms all over. Then the
bird started vocalizing which was really neat.  I have never heard a FRGU
before, certainly different than LAGU.  Then the bird took off alone and
flew back over the dam toward Dorchester Park. I went back there, refound
the bird, the bird didn't stay there long and it then took off and flew
around me for a few minutes I got some audio recordings which was really
neat. The bird flew north toward Upper Lisle County Park. I got it in my
scope and watched it until he was out of sight. The bird did not take off
that high as it stayed below the ridge line. So I went to Upper Lisle and
searched all places I know that gulls hang out and didn't find any gulls at
all. Hopefully, it will come back later today or tomorrow. The bird
certainly was finding a lot of food!!

Park, on Staten Island's south shore. The bird was roosting with many Laughing 
Gulls and a couple of Caspian Terns on a sandbar west of the pond (at rising

[nysbirds-l] Franklin's Gull Tiana Beach

Started at Robert Moses for a chance at finding a Franklin's Gull but no luck.  
After birding the area I decided to make a run to Dune Road.  Using my van as 
wind break at Tiana Beach I located my bird, a lifer for me.  Smaller and 
mantle lighter than what I was expecting.  Adult bird with three other Laughing 
Gulls moving east to west.  Soon after the four birds moved on, I found another 
small group of Laughing Gulls.  Hopes were high for another Franklin's but none 
were to be found.  50+ laughing Gulls moved by during the next 20 minutes.  
Good movement of Gannets along the ocean.  After reviews of photos of 
Franklin's Gulls the bird I had was on the lighter side but not as light as 
some of the photos.

Had a total of 4 Merlins and 2 Peregrines Ocean Parkway and 6 Merlins and 3 
Peregrines Dune Rd.

Also had two Snow Buntings in the parking lot at Tiana Beach.

[nysbirds-l] Franklin's Gull Tiana Beach

Started at Robert Moses for a chance at finding a Franklin's Gull but no luck.  
After birding the area I decided to make a run to Dune Road.  Using my van as 
wind break at Tiana Beach I located my bird, a lifer for me.  Smaller and 
mantle lighter than what I was expecting.  Adult bird with three other Laughing 
Gulls moving east to west.  Soon after the four birds moved on, I found another 
small group of Laughing Gulls.  Hopes were high for another Franklin's but none 
were to be found.  50+ laughing Gulls moved by during the next 20 minutes.  
Good movement of Gannets along the ocean.  After reviews of photos of 
Franklin's Gulls the bird I had was on the lighter side but not as light as 
some of the photos.

Had a total of 4 Merlins and 2 Peregrines Ocean Parkway and 6 Merlins and 3 
Peregrines Dune Rd.

Also had two Snow Buntings in the parking lot at Tiana Beach.

There is a first-cycle Franklin's Gull (FRGU) in the boat ramp parking lot
at Floyd Bennett Field with ~50 gulls (30 Laughing) right now.

For some balance, I came up empty for FRGU on the Queens barrier, checking
the visible beach from Silver Gull Club, Riis Park parking lot and
beach, and the gull flocks near the wastewater plant and school close to
Beach 108th St.

[nysbirds-l] Franklin's Gull--present 5/29 evening

After waiting for 2 hours, with one tantalizing far-off look, the
Franklin's Gull put in an extended appearance at the eastern end of Plumb
Beach (west side of inlet) from 6:15pm to 7:15pm.

Klemens Gasser and I had been been watching the Laughing Gulls gather on
the beach for at least 20 minutes when the Franklin's finally joined the
party. The
gull was initially feeding more aggressively than the other gulls, but it
soon slowed down and we needed to look for the the white primary tips,
smaller bill, and rosy/pink cast to its chest, that got deeper as the light
dimmed, to keep track of it as it fed and flew and fed up and down the
beach with the Laughing Gulls, a couple of Willets, an Oystercatcher, and
an increasing number of peeps.

RE: [nysbirds-l] Franklin's Gull

The Franklin's Gull flew in to the west side of the inlet at the eastern end of 
Plum Beach around 10:15, stayed for about 10 minutes , then flew east and 
landed on the beach before the area where there are many boats. I had taken 
Sean's advice and waited on the bridge along the paved walkway from about 7:45 
to 10 with no luck. This is a good view point but very noisy as it's next to 
the Belt parkway. 
A Binghampton birder (Ken?) saw the bird fly in and called me - thanks again. 
For me the most striking thing about the bird on ground was the smaller bill, 
the general black and white look towards the wing tips (rather than black with 
a couple of white spots), and from the rear, the less extensive black hood. It 
did not seem to be paired up as per previous observations, although it was with 
a small group(5-8) of Laughing Gulls. It flew off by itself to join another 
small group of laughing Gulls on the beach

looking east from Plumb Beach, on the sandy beach across Gerritsen Inlet. It 
was mixed in with about 15 Laughing Gulls about 4-500 yards away.  At that 
distance it was a very difficult call to ID the target bird. However, one gull 
picked itself up and landed on top of a Laughing Gull slowly flapping its wings 
as appeared to mate. The wing pattern as seen through the scopes was perfect. 
The gull also showed a pale pink blush on the breast. . I could not find any 
quick reference to this paring, but maybe it's something new and we'll have the 
visitor stay for the summer.

We checked the marsh for sparrows without success, but did have a fly over

Brooklyn.

Currently being viewed at the East end of the  beach on the opposite shore. 
Note, this area is near the bridge for those not familiar with the location.

[nysbirds-l] Franklin's Gull

Joe Giunta, Sam Jannazzo, Bill and I (Sy Schiff) found the FRANKLIN'S GULL, 
looking east from Plumb Beach, on the sandy beach across Gerritsen Inlet. It 
was mixed in with about 15 Laughing Gulls about 4-500 yards away.  At that 
distance it was a very difficult call to ID the target bird. However, one gull 
picked itself up and landed on top of a Laughing Gull slowly flapping its wings 
as appeared to mate. The wing pattern as seen through the scopes was perfect. 
The gull also showed a pale pink blush on the breast. . I could not find any 
quick reference to this paring, but maybe it's something new and we'll have the 
visitor stay for the summer.

[nysbirds-l] Franklin's Gull at Plum Beach, Brooklyn Sunday May 24th

Bob DeCandido and I went to Plum Beach in Brooklyn after lunch today (May 24) 
to 
look for the recently reported Nelson's Sparrows, which we didn't find. Bob 
headed back to the car while attempted to comb through the Laughing Gulls in 
search of the Black-headed Gull that had recently been reported. I wasn't able 
to find the Black-headed Gull, but decided to try for a few flight shots of the 
gulls. When we got home, I looked through my photos and found a Franklin's 
Gull. Here's a link to the photo:

The Franklin's Gull was hanging around with the Laughing Gulls on the beach, 
which kept flying up because of all the foot traffic. Most of the gulls were 
fairly close to the sand bar. 

Also a small flock of Sanderlings and some Least Terns.

Congrats Ken on a very nice find.

I along with many others that included Bobby Rossetti, Eric Miller, Isaac
Grant, Harry Taylor, Ed Becher and I am sure others who I did not see at
the sites, split up and tried to cover the beach areas from fields 2 - 5.
Eric and I got as far east as about 1/2 a mile maybe more...past the
lighthouse on the beach side taking in some rain in the process but all the
while hoping the weather would force more birds inland.

Alas, although we found a few Laughing Gull flocks, with one numbering over
100, we did not find our target bird.  However, like Ken indicated, I would
not assume this bird is gone and encourage seekers to study Ken's photos
well and continue the quest as there were a lot of gulls offshore including
who knows what other goodies.

State Park had not been relocated by early this afternoon, despite intensive 
searching. There are still large numbers of Laughing Gulls loafing on the beach 
between Fields 2 and 5, although the many fisherman walking the beach have 
forced some of the birds off the beach and into the water. I do not necessarily 
assume this bird has left, and there still may be some gull concentrations 
tomorrow, assuming the fish cooperate. Photos of the gull can be found on my

Around 2:30 this afternoon I found a juvenile FRANKLIN’S GULL transitioning
into first winter plumage in the Village of Wilson (Niagara County).  The
bird was on the small pier that juts into Lake Ontario at the end of NY
Route 425.  There were a growing number of Herring Gulls here, up to about a
dozen when I left at 3:15.  The Franklin’s seemed easily intimidated by the
larger gulls – it was frequently changing positions on the pier.  If looking
for this bird, you should also check the much longer double-piers, which are
at the mouth of Twelve Mile Creek, about ½ mile west of the small pier.

[nysbirds-l] Franklin's Gull - Niagara River

The FRANKLIN'S GULL was back in the same area as yesterday, viewed from
Artpark State Park in Lewiston, NY.  The bird works back and forth and was
easy to see for much of the time we were there.  We saw it between 2:00 and
2:40 but Peter Yoerg had it around 10:30 this morning.

 

The location and other suggested places to look are given in yesterday's

Thanks to Andy Guthrie for posting this to GeneseeBirds earlier.  The first
winter FRANKLIN'S GULL was seen from Artpark State Park in Lewiston, NY from
2:15 to 2:45 this afternoon.  Take the upper entrance (off of Portage
Street) into the park, stay to your left, and drive to a small parking lot
by the river.  Walk the trail that goes south toward the Lewiston Queenston
Bridge.  The Franklin's Gull was first seen about 150 yards from the parking
lot, mainly working along the NY shore but could have been easily seen from
the Ontario side (walk upriver from the Queenston boat ramp).  If searching
for this gull, other places to check include the power plants (Adam Beck
overlook or NY Power Vista), the Whirlpool (Spanish Aero Car or Whirlpool
State Park), or even below the falls.  Watching the Bonaparte's Gulls fly
out of the river onto Lake Ontario at dusk may also work.  There were not a
lot of Bonies here, perhaps less than a hundred in the narrowest stretch of
the river below the Lewiston Queenston Bridge.  There were also very few at
the Whirlpool and none below the falls.  There were many at the power
plants, however.

[nysbirds-l] Franklin's Gull - Niagara River

The FRANKLIN'S GULL was back in the same area as yesterday, viewed from
Artpark State Park in Lewiston, NY.  The bird works back and forth and was
easy to see for much of the time we were there.  We saw it between 2:00 and
2:40 but Peter Yoerg had it around 10:30 this morning.

winter FRANKLIN'S GULL was seen from Artpark State Park in Lewiston, NY from
2:15 to 2:45 this afternoon.  Take the upper entrance (off of Portage
Street) into the park, stay to your left, and drive to a small parking lot
by the river.  Walk the trail that goes south toward the Lewiston Queenston
Bridge.  The Franklin's Gull was first seen about 150 yards from the parking
lot, mainly working along the NY shore but could have been easily seen from
the Ontario side (walk upriver from the Queenston boat ramp).  If searching
for this gull, other places to check include the power plants (Adam Beck
overlook or NY Power Vista), the Whirlpool (Spanish Aero Car or Whirlpool
State Park), or even below the falls.  Watching the Bonaparte's Gulls fly
out of the river onto Lake Ontario at dusk may also work.  There were not a
lot of Bonies here, perhaps less than a hundred in the narrowest stretch of
the river below the Lewiston Queenston Bridge.  There were also very few at
the Whirlpool and none below the falls.  There were many at the power
plants, however.

Canadian Falls on the NY side.  There were no Bonaparte's Gulls below the
falls and we did not have time to make a thorough check above the falls.
However, I was still able to count nine LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS roosting
in the shallows just off of Goat Island and above the Three Sisters Islands.
Of special interest were three juveniles all sitting together.  I don't
think I have ever seen three juvenile Lessers in one day before, much less
all together.  The others were five adults and one second winter.

I was told by a friend that the Frankin's Gulls could not be found this morning 
between 6:30 and 10 AM, and that most gulls were out to sea. People will be 
checking again this afternoon, which is when they were found yesterday

[nysbirds-l] Franklin's Gull - Hamlin Beach (Monroe County); Eared Grebe - Batavia (Genesee County)

The clear highlight of a fairly active morning at Hamlin Beach was a
first-winter FRANKLIN'S GULL that flew in from the east, settled on the
water in front of the overlook for a few minutes, and then flew in towards
the beach and back off to the east.  Some mediocre pictures of this bird can

There was a steady movement of Common Loons for most of the morning, in both
directions (closer birds flying west and more distant birds flying east, for
the most part), and a decent variety of other waterfowl.  Highlights of
these included two Red-throated Loons, four Red-necked Grebes, 21
White-winged Scoters and an adult male Surf Scoter.  A distant jaeger
(likely Parasitic) put on a brief show successfully harassing a gull into
dropping a fish before settling on the water.  Six juvenile Black-bellied
Plovers and flyby Dunlin (2) and Sanderling (1) were the only shorebirds,
and a Peregrine Falcon made a quick pass going west.

A quick spin around the ponds at the Batavia Wastewater Treatment plant
turned up one EARED GREBE and a variety of waterfowl including Redhead, both
Scaup, Ring-necked Duck, Green-winged and Blue-winged Teal, Ruddy Ducks,
American Wigeons and Northern Pintail.
