[nysbirds-l] Gull-billed Tern @ JBWR Queens Co.

2017-04-12 Thread Andrew Baksh
The highlight of a morning walk at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge (JBWR) was a
Gull-billed Tern. Observed on the the East Pond from Big John's Overlook.

Other migrants included Forster's Terns, Glossy Ibis, Blue Gray Gnatcatcher
along with expected migrants already reported.

The West Pond, is looking much nicer now than the depleted dead zone we had a
month ago. It is filled with water, the benefit of a closed breach. There were
ducks (Ruddys, Shoveler, Buffleheads and Greater Scaup) on the pond as well as
Forster's Terns, the expected Gulls and a Greater Yellowlegs as well.

I would urge that visitors who use eBird to please take the time to record your
sightings accurately by location. There is a West Pond hotspot and it would be
helpful to mine that data going forward, once the restoration is considered
complete.

[nysbirds-l] Gull-billed Tern JBWR

2012-06-10 Thread Steve Walter
I was doing something a bit different -- watching the Diamond-backed
Terrapins at Jamaica Bay. The good spot for that is the south facing shore
along the West Pond trail that's often had GULL-BILLED TERN in the past. One
appeared for a little while today, landing on the shore to eat a crab (who'd
have thunk that as a tern food item -- well, maybe that's what the thick
bill is for). Also around were a few White-rumped Sandpipers and, unusual
for the refuge (especially) in spring, a Sanderling. An unidentified Cuckoo
flew by at the south end of the parking lot, where a Black-billed was seen
late in the migration.

RE:[nysbirds-l] Gull-billed Tern at Gilgo Beach, Suffolk

2012-04-25 Thread Shaibal Mitra
Well, it looks like I quipped too soon

Patricia just called from a quick lunch-break visit to Gilgo, reporting that
Derek's bright male Blue Grosbeak was now back on task along the fenceline near
the bathrooms, but that the Gullible Tern was nowhere in sight.

Within a minute, she called back to report a/the Gull-billed Tern hunting over
the dunes, across from the parking lot.

Joan Quinlan reports the year's first Gull-billed Tern at Gilgo Beach, Suffolk
County, LI, but no Blue Grosbeak.

The latter was present at Gilgo at 7:50 this morning but flew across the road
toward the beach almost immediately after I spied it (depriving Patricia and
Ken and Sue Feustel, and later Joan of chances to see it). Leaving for work,
Patricia pulled off another example of what I've come to recognize as her
signature birding move, promptly finding her own Blue Grosbeak along the Ocean
Parkway, about halfway back to Cedar Beach!

[nysbirds-l] Gull-billed Tern

2010-05-05 Thread Sy Schiff
Jones Beach West End 5 May

There were 2 Gull-billed Terns on the far side of the mud flat on Short Beach
Island. They flew off to the west. A bit latter I found the pair flying over
the area south of the West End #2 concession stand. They flew off and finally
landed on a island in the still extensive wash over. A scope view showed there
were four. Piping Plover are on the beach side with a smattering of shorebirds
consisting of 50 Least Sandpipers, Killdeer, Greater Yellowlegs and Willet.
