[nysbirds-l] Tufted Duck - Yes

2013-02-26 Thread Pat Palladino

The Tufted Duck was spotted again this morning at around 7:30 a.m. in the pond
at Heckscher Park, Huntington, NY (not the same Heckscher Park as on the south
shore). Real close views were available as it swam with some Ring-necked Ducks
and a few Lesser Scaup in this small pond near the rock islands. Pat

[nysbirds-l] Tufted Duck YES, Thayer's Gull NO, Thick-billed Murre NO -LI/NYC, 1/19

2013-01-19 Thread Brendan Fogarty
Hi everyone,

Ron and Ben Barkley and I visited some spots today around the Nassau

The Tufted Duck was still frequenting Saint John's Pond in Cold Spring Harbor
(Nassau/Suffolk co.) as of this morning. No Eurasian Wigeon on the pond today.

A check of the jetties at Point Lookout (Nassau co.) revealed few gulls, likely
thanks to a strong onshore wind. About fifty gulls were gathered in the Point
Lookout State Park parking lot (of Grace's Warbler fame)  and quite a few were
also at the Jones Beach jetty across the inlet.

Speaking of gulls, there are still hundreds of gulls frequenting the Norman
Levy preserve (the landfill) off the Meadowbrook Parkway in Merrick (Nassau
co.). The park took a hit from Sandy and was closed as of a couple of weeks
ago, but they were planning to reopen "mid-late January." Gulls may also be
viewed with luck from the baseball field area just immediately to the east of
the landfill, where there is a small Monk Parakeet colony (two there today) in
the stadium lights.

No Barrow's at Jamaica Bay (at low tide) today. And the murre in the Dead Horse
Bay area was not visible from the beach south of the marina across the road
from Floyd Bennett Field (Brooklyn).

Best,

[nysbirds-l] Tufted Duck - yes Western Grebe - yes Nobel Laureate - Yes

2013-01-15 Thread Robert Bate
I arrived in Cold Spring around 8:15 and found the Tufted Duck in the
company of the 17 Ring-necked Ducks and the Redhead on the pond behind
St John's Church. The Cold Spring Harbor Bald Eagle flew in, perched
in a tree by the lake, and stayed a few minutes before flying off in
the direction of the harbor. I then went to look for the previously
reported Eurasian Wigeon in the harbor as there were no wigeons on the
St John's pond. A birder was already on the wall on the lower end
west side of the harbor where most of the waterfowl were. He was
leaving as I arrived but when I got out with my scope and binoculars
he stopped and approached me. He introduced himself though I didn't
catch the name. An elderly man, he referred to the American Wigeon as
the "Bald Pate", a name I haven't heard but once or twice. He said
that he was interested in birds before he was interested in science
which I though a common enough pattern though my jaw dropped when he
said he was one of the people who discovered the double helix. "What
was your name again?" I asked - "James Watson" he said and added with
a smile, "I didn't think you heard it the first time." It made my
day, as a science fan it was a thrill to meet one of the stars of
science. Thank you Mr. Watson.

BTW, I did find the Eurasian Wigeon in the harbor, dull red head but
definitely red.

After this I made straight for the Ponquogue Bridge area for the
Western Grebe. getting there around 9:45 and I got lucky. The grebe
was in the gereral area west of the bridge on the northern half of the
bay. I parked in the boat launch lot off Dune Rd and walked all the
way out onto the elevated portion of the old bridge remains and
scanned the bay from there looking under the bridge to the northwest.
The grebe was feeding actively so I had to work to relocate it when it
dove. A number of other birders including Arie Gilbert and Eric
Miller were looking for the bird a little later but we couldn't refind
it from that location; I hope they got it from their next location.

On my return trip I birded Belmont Lake and St Charles Cemetery where
I found the continuing Barnacle Goose but no Cackling or Greater
White-fronted Geese.

[nysbirds-l] Tufted Duck Yes, Redhead Yes

2013-01-15 Thread Cesar Castillo
For anyone still interested, the Tufted Duck is still at the pond by Saint
Johns Church in Cold Spring Harbor off route 25A.
Also at the pond you can still find a Redhead duck.
Others are reporting a Bald Eagle that has frequented the pond for the last two
weeks.  Apparently it alternated between the pond and the harbor.

Andrew,

Thanks for the info. The bird is still present in the harbor as of
now(8:30). It was sleeping in the southwest portion of the harbor before it
flew across and landed amongst the police docks and out of sight. Feel free
to post if you think it may aid others in the search. Thanks again,

My advise, is to use very discrete movements and switch to communicating in

and tends to spook with minimal disturbance. Good luck and check all the
surrounding marinas. It likes to hide among the docked boats.

the vantage point at the end of Southdown Road, overlooking Lloyd Harbor. A
scope is must at this spot, as here it is a Tuf Duck. And I have to say that
although it was in my scope, I didn’t go away feeling like I had seen a Tufted
Duck. With a better sense of where everything is inside Huntington Harbor, I
went back at dawn today. From the little park on the north side of the police
docks (east side of the harbor), I immediately saw the Tufted swim in with some
Mallards into the boat basin on the north side of the park. After a while, it
ended up at (one of the) Knutson Marine. There is a driveway just before a blue
building that leads down to a public access spot, from where the Tufted was
visible. It alternated between these spots until 8:30.

While I don’t prefer to go after ducks – with a camera – on overcast days, I
was wondering whether it might stick around longer as a result. I don’t know if
the light conditions affect its coming and goings. I heard one suggestion that
the activity of we birders and photographers are to blame. It did seem skittish
to me. In any event, it took its first flight this morning as a result of the
Harbormaster boat setting sail. That was about 8:20, but it appeared to land
back at Knutson. At that spot at about 8:30, I believe that was the duck I saw
take off for the north (presumably to join the scaup flock in Lloyd Harbor).

My photographic offering is at http://www.stevewalternature.com/

As an addendum to Karen Fung's
report, for those who may try to see this bird. . . this
morning, the Tufted Duck continued in Huntington
Harbor.  It appeared at 6:58 at the police docks and
flew off at 7:07.  It circled around and landed in the
southern end of the harbor, where it was present for almost
an hour.  It later moved around, and was relocated on
the western shore of the harbor, just north of the West
Shore Marina.  It was last seen from this location when
it flew off to the NW at 8:25, presumably heading toward the
 Sound.

The Spotted Sandpiper continues across the harbor from the
Gold Star Battalion Beach.  An adult Lesser
Black-backed Gull was also present with a large flock of
Ring-bills in the southeast corner of the harbor.

[nysbirds-l] Tufted Duck- Yes: Having Dessert before Dinner

2011-01-07 Thread ROBERT ADAMO

Yesterday, Jan. 6, We were invited to a 1 PM dinner at our best friend's home
in Huntington Station, Suffolk Co. With the blessing of my wife, Ruth Ann, I
dropped her off at 12:10 PM, after "swearing" I would return by the afore
mentioned 1 PM ( 5 other guests were expected, and my wife did not want to be
embarrassed ) As John Mortimer's Horace Rumpole ( of "Rumpole of the Bailey"
fame ) was heard on occasion to "think/say", "you musn't embarrass she who must
be obeyed" !
I made it to Cold Spring Harbor in 15 minutes, and found a local birder, Dick
Furman, looking for the duck. After a few minutes, while checking a mixed flock
of ducks ( scaup & longtail) that had just flown in, we spotted the Tufted
Duck- a real neat bird ! Coming up after one of it's many dives, the bird's
trailing head feathers were splayed, giving it an "afro" affect !
Since 2/17/92, I have seen this specie 7 x on L.I. Only once, on 1/25/93 at
Mackay's Pond ( Grumman Property ), did I see both male & female together.On
that occasion, and on one other, my notes indicate that the Tufteds seem to
dive more than the other species they were with, scaup, long tail, ring-neck,
etc. Although I was only there a short while, thinking back on it, I think that
was the case yesterday, as well. If anyone else had the same impression, I
would welcome hearing about it.
I arrived back at the Brogan residence a tad late, at 1:03 PM, but with only
one of the guests being on time, "she who must be obeyed" gave me a "pass" !
The dinner ( including my 2nd dessert of the day ) and the company were great,
Everyone enjoyed hearing about my earlier outing, seeing what the bird looked
like, and checking the "range map" to find out where it came from.
Cheers,Bob...P.S. Dick, I didn't get to see the '89 bird.
