Re: [oi-dev] [OpenIndiana-discuss] OI Foundation

2021-05-26 Thread Reginald Beardsley via oi-dev

I just want a way to contribute money to support OI/Illumos. TANSTAFL

I was going to suggest one of the commercial Illumos based companies managing
OI specific work with whatever money was provided and taking a cut to offset
the cost of managing it.

All I want it a way to provide $200-$250 USD/yr with proper accountability. I
got shouted down when I suggested the idea 8-10 years ago by people who thought
it should be "free". I was *not* suggesting anyone be forced to pay, simply
that there be a way for those who want to contribute money to do that.

I'm a retired research scientist with a very strong preference for SunOS. No
server farm, other users to support or business revenue. Just me. I value good
support and professional polish in release images. And willing and able to pay.
In my case, time is more precious than money.

There is no illumos foundation today. We're just a self-organising
project team.

Do we need an OI specific organization? Why could this not be handled by the
existing Illumos Foundation? That was what I was going to propose. We're using
the same base OS. So far as I know, OI just adds GUI support. So having the
Illumos Foundation simply maintain a ledger entry for OI specific financial
contributions and disburse them seems much lower cost.

Another foundation is immediately burdened by the cost of tax preparation among
other things.

I am *very* interested in contributing money to such an organization on an
annual basis at around $200/yr. In particular I think we need a tech writer to
clean up the documentation, especially the wiki. Being able to hire developers
would be a huge boon. But if we just cleaned up the ancient cruft in the wiki

My personal view is that without financial support from the user community OI

money is much less of a burden than trying to work on stuff myself.
