There is one missing topic from yesterday's agenda, which we will talk
about it on a TC meeting today on 13:00 UTC

Topic is about giving back write access to openmandriva packages on ABF to
POK, this will help us and his Moondrake project to work on a common

[OM Cooker] 2014-01-21 TC agenda

2014-01-21 Thread Tomasz Gajc
Hello,

today's TC (14:30 UTC) agenda.

1. 2014.0 Specifications status
Yesterday i've posted a consolidated status for 2014.0 release.
Sad is that vast majority of specifications is less than 30% done and this
means they won't fit on final release. This is a HUGE risk and needs to me
managed.

2. Status for ON HOLD specifications

ON HOLD means that first feature should be developed for cooker and after
passed tests should be ported to 2014.0

* ARM support - Fedya
* New WIFI stack - TPG
* New Java stack - pcpa

3.Mass rebuild - need volunteers for fixing failed packages
We need to form a team of 2-3 people who can help with fixing failed
packages

4. Other topics

 Hello teams

On a TC meeting we just discussed the topic of informing our potential new
contributors that they are wanted and welcome:)

We need to deliver them a message, what exactly we need and what we can
 offer?

In the ideal world this message should be used for newbies (for schools
etc) and for experienced devs and other fields experts (at Fosdem for
 example).

 https://docs.google.com/a/lebedeff.co.uk/document/d/1va_MJjt5DMLv4gWZojFhmsgbpHwzXlgCH5Ra5vgSHo4/edit

Your input would be most appreciated - what we have to say to our future
 contributors?
The document is currently almost empty, the idea is to throw in there as
many ideas as possible and then to make it look nice.

 Please share your thoughts!

Subject: [OM Cooker] OMV mirror at mirror.yandex.ru

 Hi all,

In Prague we discussed a problem with usage of abf-downloads server as a
mirror - this introduces additional traffic and can lead to slower
builds. I've promised to consider a possibility to mirror OMV at
mirror.rosalinux.com server which is used as a primary mirror for ROSA.
However, after discussion with our admins it turned out that
mirror.rosalinux.com shares Internet connection with abf-downloads so
mirroring OMV at rosalinux.com is not a solution for the original problem.

Nevertheless, we can suggest an alternative solution - I have asked guys
from Yandex (this is a Russian analogue of Google) to mirror OMV and
they kindly agreed to do this. So now you can find OMV mirror here:
 http://mirror.yandex.ru/openmandriva/

Http, ftp and rsync should be available. Note that http servers use some
caching mechanisms, so if you make a lot of frequent updates (e.g., work
hard on cooker) it makes sense to use ftp.

Feel free to add yandex to official mirror list:)

3. Release announcement with feature highlights based on 2014.0

In some sense yes. Iirc, Poland mirror is synced with yandex, not with
ibiblio, so it does provide omv2013.0 repositories.

So users of omv2013.0 can use either yandex or icm.edu.pl to get the
updates (and other mirrors synced with yandex or abf directly), but not the
ibiblio mirrors. I think this should be fixed and openmandriva2013.0 and
openmandriva2014.0 folders should be synced to ibiblio, as well.

I think we can release an updated version of omv2014 with Kernel 3.14.x,

releasing some updated 2014 ISOs, for the end of May, or early/mid June:

Currently that is only a very early alpha draft...,
where I started collecting the ideas with all the needed text for the

at the end, all this there shoud become a very complete anc clear Kernel
 docs, with:

 - general instructions for kernel

 - specific explaination for each flavours and where/when to use them
 (instead of desktop)

 - and a very useful FAQ

now I'm trying to obtain the best way to visualize main configs/specs with
 Tables #1, #2, #3,
at the end, there will remain only one of those,
the goal is having a Table that describes the main flavours with the main
 configs and specs

When, the Contents will be clean, fixed and almost complete, like was in a
 Beta status,
It will immediately adapted, with very few changes, and copied also in the
 ROSA Wiki!

I'm ready to accept any suggestions and help about...
for example I need help with translations, if the docs should be

Re: [OM Cooker] Newer Thoughts

2014-03-14 Thread Tomasz Gajc
Thanks Robert for these thoughts, please fill bugs for easily tracking of
progress.

Speaking of 1,6 GB of RAM needed, this is because we use livecd-tools in
stead of anything that support overlay. We adressed this issues on 2014.0
specification list. Task was assigned on Bero and Arisel, unfortunately we
run out of time, not to mention we are short on manpower :(

Ad 1. Hmm this is somehow related to livecd-tools - someone need to
investigate it.
Ad 2. Nice to know that someone likes my idea of join and donate desktop
entries :) Speaking of Install this entry already exists on
draklive-install but somehow does not show on KDE desktop.
Ad 3. Well this can be easily removed, by default cups is enabled by
systemd, i can do the same for smb.
Ad4. I'd suggest to stick with current ads.

2014-03-14 6:29 GMT+01:00 Robert Xu rob...@gmail.com:

Yes, yes, I'm being noisy again.

But I have to remark on the current state of 2014.0 (from a build I
downloaded from ABF, dated yesterday). While the previous alpha could
not do anything remotely useful in live mode, I can get this one to
finally boot to live mode, and be useful. And it feels like it's
 running at a decent speed.

Granted, I must still confirm that my environment still requires about
1536 MB of memory to run. But I think I'm going to begin to correlate
ISO size to required amount of memory... (sanity reasons).

 Kudos to everyone!

 Aesthetic-wise, a few requests/questions - I'll file bugs for
 requests, but they're not urgent:

 1. Can we add quiet to the boot parameters on the LiveCD and/or
desktop? Just because the verbose output may be unappealing to people.
 2. I saw the donate and join desktop entries, which are great! Can we
also have an Install entry for Live mode?
 3. The services screen from drakx's firstboot seems completely
unnecessary. Those services should probably be on by default anyway...
or triggered by systemd socket actvation, which IIRC Samba and CUPS
should fall into that category. Can we have that removed? I wonder if
 it confuses users.
 4. Should we update the installer slides to reflect the new artwork,
instead of a plain blue background? Could also be used to promote the
 community.

 Again, kudos!

Re: [OM Cooker] Disabling generation of old hdlist.cz in ABF?

2014-03-31 Thread Tomasz Gajc
For me you can kill it with fire. Currently urpmi and friends do have
support for hdlist.cz but as you have written it is not used anymore for
like 7 years.

2014-03-31 10:02 GMT+02:00 Denis Silakov denis.sila...@rosalab.ru:

 Hi all,

As many of you can likely notice, package publishing in ABF usually takes
relatively significant time - about several minutes (sometimes up to 10
 minutes).

One of the time-consuming tasks in the publishing is generation of
hdlist.cz file - this is a huge file containing internal urpm
representation of metadata, including file lists, package descriptions,
etc. This file seems to be redundant - nowadays we generate additional xml
files (changelog.xml, info.xml, etc.) which in combination with lightweight
synthesis.hdlist.cz provide the same information. However, I am not so
familiar with hdlist.cz and can't guarantee that nothing will be lost if
 we completely drop it.

So the question is - can somebody say what will we lost (if any) if we
drop hdlist.cz files? Or maybe we should just try and see?

Hello,

this TC is related to RC1 release. Last ISOs builds unfortunately does not
boot, and after some investigations this is close to kernel-3.13.7. Good
sign is that kernel-3.13.8 boots without any problems, but we need to be
sure with ISO images.

According to sf.net OpenMandriva 2014.0 BETA has been downloaded *2 939 *
times!!!

Here is the agenda for today:

1. What about RC1 release? - If we produce next ISO today with kernel
3.13.8 - QA still have 3 days for testing. This is optimistic scenario.
What if we have NOGO or new ISO won't boot ? Let's have a clear solution in
this case - postpone RC for 2 weeks and same goes with GA date.

2. Status of BUG Squashing - Dear QA please resume this topic,

3. Version freeze - do we have any packages that need update ?

4. Other topics related to 2014.0 release.

Unfortunately i'm not going to take a lead on this meeting, got other

Sorry, I realized I was doing my urpm* testing in Rosa 2012.1
In OMV 2013.0, I'm finding that, with global policy set to Always and a
freshly-updated info from MandrivaUpdate, urpmf is very fast. Also, booted
back to Rosa, it is now fast, also. My longest waits, previously, were
when I was searching for a file that was not in the distro, so a list from
each repository was downloaded. It appears, with Always configured, some
stale lists are being refreshed when some strange string is given.
Eventually, a nonsense word returns no match quite quickly, without any
downloading. So, as it is, xml files are working just fine for these uses
for me, with Always set, it seems.
 Thanks,

  Hi,
I hope someone can make some sense of my experience wrt hdlist.cz etc.
Many years ago, iirc, synthesis.hdlist.cz was introduced as an
optional source of media info that could be chosen by those with a slow
internet connection, as it was smaller and took less time to download than
the traditional, default hdlist.cz. I always chose hdlist.cz as my
connection was relatively quick and, I think, there was more information
included, naturally. Also, whenever I used urpmq/urpmf to query the
database, which is my primary usage of this important tool for
investigating packages capabilities, the result was almost immediate,
since the data was already on my computer. At some point, hdlist.czwas no
longer available as a way to configure urpmi. Every time I search
for a package containing a file of interest, I have to wait a long time for
xml files to be downloaded from each media source. Also, when I look for a
changelog in MandrivaUpdate or with urpmq, it must be retrieved. IIANM,
the package info would already be available on my machine when using
hdlist.cz as urpmi.update had already been done. Admittedly, this is
an accounting of the events of a number of years that is challenging for an
aged memory, but my recollected experience is that the functionality of
urpm was better with hdlist.cz than with anything that has come since.
Maybe generation of the others could be dropped to gain publishing speed?
:) Alternately, perhaps an option could be provided where all the current
information is downloaded when urpmi.update is run and/or with CL switches.

^^^Those words reminded me of the policy option to Always download xml
information in the rpmdrake media manager, which I recall trying, before,
without improvement. I see this in the urpmi.cfg manual about global
 options:

 xml-info
For remote media, specify when files.xml.lzma,
 changelog.xml.lzma and info.xml.lzma are downloaded:

never
on-demand
(This is the default).

The specific xml info file is downloaded when
urpmq/urpmf/rpmdrake ask for it. urpmi.update will remove
outdated xml info file.

nb: if urpmq/urpmf/rpmdrake is not run by root, the xml
info file is downloaded into /tmp/.urpmi-uid/

update-only
urpmi.update will update xml info files already required
 at least once by urpmq/urpmf/rpmdrake.

nb: with update-only, urpmi.update will not update
 /tmp/.urpmi-uid/ xml info files

always
all xml info files are downloaded when doing
 urpmi.addmedia and urpmi.update

I checked and no global policy was defined, so I set it to Always in
media manager, which is reflected, now, in urpmi.cfg:

 {
   downloader: curl
   verify-rpm: 1
   xml-info: always
 }

This stanza was empty, before, by default, I guess. I then ran a urpmf
 query

Current ISO build on Sunday, is missing default urpmi medias because of
mirror issues. This is not a critical issue, but definietly won't give any
good feedback on this (see bug #654).

Colin, Robert - what QA voice on below options?

  1. Wait till tommorow or perhaps plus one more day for new kernel and
new ISO - less time for QA tests

I personally can deal with this, but that's definitely not
representative of the whole of QA - especially since I only have one
 piece of hardware...

aside: it might be good to get more people into QA to test.

  2. Rebuild ISO to solve bug 654 without waiting for new kernel - till
tommorow - not so much time for QA tests

is the new kernel building now?

  3. Release Sunday's build with no medias (bug 654) as a RC1, gives more
 time for QA testing

bug 654 might trip people up. I don't know how people will react to it.

I'd like to have this discussed on tommorow's TC meeting, and work out a
 final decision.

Sure. I'll try to attend, but if not, I delegate my voice to Colin.

[OM Cooker] 2014-04-15 TC

2014-04-15 Thread Tomasz Gajc
Hello,

today's TC meeting is going to focus on RC1 release. Sunday's ISO builds
seems to be fine, but due to mirror glitch, urpmi medias are missing -
reported in bug #643
We need to figure out best solution for RC1 release.

Agenda:
1. RC1 release - what to do?
1.1 Wait till kernel 3.13.10-1 is done and then rebuild ISO (max time till
wednesday)
1.2 Rebuild today ISO to solve bug #643, do not wait for new kernel
1.3 Release Sunday's ISO with a valid 643 bug

2. QA status on RC1 - when is planned GnG, current status of GnG process

3. Release announcement -
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1oPwUd975cvCZ-9V0QoPumRAB6-hknNvWx6yXuQbP97c/edit?usp=sharing

4. Release meeting on IRC on friday - discussion on GnG decision?

5. Version freeze - do we have any packages that need update ?

6. Other topics related to 2014.0 release.

Meeting is on #openmandriva-cooker channel at 14:30 UTC / 16:30 CEST

In the end, I've ended up disabling mirrorlist and just using the master

  Here we come:
When you edit some text or mail or a web page, you are editing fastly and
  you find all messed,
because the pointer changes its position, the resulting text is all as
  garbled, and it's frustrating!

a I have noticed this is happening everywhere, also with other OS, for
  example, Windows OS
bThis bad behaviour seems to happen only with portable PCs, not when
  editing with desktops

I started to study this problem, that sometime really risk to getting you
  crazy

I started to suspect this could be caused by some unwilled touches or too
close skin, on the touchpads, when this happens, it forces you to edit
 text
slowly, watching with care the display, slowdown you much

here the solution, tested by me into two laptops, and into Colin netbook

So instead of relaxing this weekend (this was frankly the first
weekend I've been able to relax without having a horde of work fall
from above), I decided to be, frankly, stupid and make this tool.
Because it's a good idea to not relax before getting dumped with work
 again (FINALS save me pls)

But anyway - this is omvbootstrap. It's like debootstrap or
fedboostrap. Except it's not tailored to Debian distros, and *it
doesn't require RPM to run*. So, if you felt like it, you could run it
on Arch and it'd still install a perfect working copy of OpenMandriva
 Lx in your chroot.

You can grab the code here - https://github.com/robxu9/omvbootstrap

This is incredibly useful if you want to build a network CD, or a
 minimal installation.

[OM Cooker] 2014-05-20 TC meeting

2014-05-19 Thread Tomasz Gajc
Hi,

i think it is time to start new development cycle.
First we need to start plannin phase, so it means we should gather ideas
which will be our feature list for upcoming next release. As we decided on
Prague meeting, release after 2014.0 will be based on cooker and will be
breakthrough release with many spectacular features.

Plan for planning features phase:
1. Gather ideas on project.openmandriva.org till end of June
2. Debate on all ideas during TC meetings till end of June
3. Start implementation phase

We need to be fast and cunning on this, because list of ideas is till
growing up. Do not forget and if you have any ideas please fill them on
project.openmandriva.org

Agenda for TC meeting:

1. How to help newcomers join the fun ?
a. Dedicated wiki page
b. Video tutorials
c. Other ideas ?

2. New ideas for next release
3. Debate on already registered ideas on project.openmandriva.org
4. Other issues ?

Cheers

Re: [OM Cooker] Mpv video player

2014-06-10 Thread Tomasz Gajc
IIRC mplayer development is somehwat dead because of lot of forks i.e
mplayer2.

Well we should do some research on mpv2 whether it is worth to do the
switch in some future.

Title (which may seems a troll :p): Mplayer is (almost) dead, long live
 Mpv (and VAAPI)

Less than a year ago I bought a new PC from scratch, keeping nothing
 from the old.
I took something modern without exageration.
 [...]
I was for many years a happy user of Mplayer. With the rising of High
Definition, I was less. The problem of synchronization of the video (a
little chopped) arose more even with a recent CPU. The problem is
also associated with Mplayer. Intel graphics cards (found on the i7
CPU and others) allow decoding and displaying the video via VAAPI
interface. There is VAAPI for Mplayer, separated here:

 https://gitorious.org/vaapi/mplayer/source/e4a658ef28e09e8441630f9028506f5cf7449480
 :

I used it, the CPU consumption drops drastically through VAAPI, but ...
There were still problems of synchronization (eg Freeview HD, which in
addition has almost always an audio/video offset).
This branch of Mplayer is not updated since a long time and each time
there was a new version of Mplayer, I had to redo the patch. It is not
fun in the long run. Finally I gave up.

One day I discovered that Youtube offers 2160h videos (against 1080
height for the current HD). Example taken randomly
 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=suWsd372pQE
Useless to rely on Flash to see this in 2k. We can recover the video
with youtube-dl (size 138). I used mplayer and I got:
dimensions are too high: 3840x2160 (maximum is 2048x2048)
You can get around with -vf scale=... but it puts the CPU to its
knees, or use -vo gl. In any case the result stays chopped. And
voila, all my gleaming new hardware is already obsolete.
Of course, there is the problem of displaying such video physically
(2160h screen and link with the screen), but let's put it aside. Youtube
videos being not very well coded, 2016h videos encoded by Youtube gives
 good 1080h.

I have modern equipment, but I can not read properly recent videos
 formats.
Would it be not possible with the latest equipment to read properly
 recent video formats on GNU/Linux?
 It would hurt me.

 Then I stumbled Mpv: http://mpv.io/
In outline, this is a fork of Mplayer/Mplayer2 who wants to go ahead
and get rid of all the historic Mplayer balls and chains. Mpv is
compatible with Mplayer and is the legacy of the fork, but it is not a
priority fpr them, and there are incompatibilities. Mpv integrates
 VAAPI.
I have a Fedora 20 [...], mpv is in the rpmfusion repository. So Yum
install mpv. Rpmfusion got the 0.3.6 release. I updated to 0.3.10 a
few hours ago just to see, it does not change much, just less bugs.

To use vaapi with Mpv: mpv -vo vaapi (or opengl) --hwdec=vaapi
You can also tinker /etc/mpv/... or ~/.Mpv/ to shorten the command line.
Mpv with vaapi and the cpu consumption is falling, NO synchronization
problem (finally!). For 2160h video Youtube 2160h, I can run it 2
times in parallel with -speed 2 (60 fps), easy, fluid. Less than 10%
CPU with Mpv (for a thread, the CPU has 8 threads). Very greedy
 Blu-ray are (finally) flawless.

NB: remember to have the frequency of the screen that corresponds to
the video, or a multiple, for it to be really fluid. Therefore check
Modeline and xrandr --newmode xrandr --addmode xrandr --rate.

I do not do here a complete test of Mpv, I use it only for 2 days. T
he project is new but impressive...

Farewell Mplayer, thanks for services rendered, and welcome to Mpv.
I only found one regression from Mplayer. With VAAPI on Mplayer, we
can ask the graphics card to deinterlace interlaced video. With
Mplayer there was a doubling of the fps (like -vf tfields ). With
Mpv, although the doc says it's bob deinterlacing , this is not what
 I saw.
Another advantage of VAAPI, we do not have the problem of the screen
which is refreshed with the image of the video that is actually composed of
2 images, because the reader write in the memory of the graphics card at
 the same time drive.
There is a trick to gnome-shell if you do not use VAAPI which avoids
this problem but is not enabled by default.

Not only VAAPI can decode and display videos, VAAPI also can encode. There
are very basic tools in the package libva-utils, they are damn fast (more
than 25 fps in 1920x1080 loseless) and it consumes nothing. The CPU
that integrates the graphics card does not heat. It is stunning. I
 hope one day

Also, is there any chance this was an error rather than a hack? (e.g. you

was logged in with your account rather than his own?)

It seems unlikely that someone who actually knows what abf is and how to

Can someone fix systemd in cooker? I just tried updating my cooker vm

 systemd-udevd is located in /usr/lib/systemd, not /lib/systemd...

Great to hear that !

Please follow Kate suggestions, as we may find there our chance for new
opportunities.

 Hi all

We have submitted our case for partnership with the polish national
digitization initiative (link above), the idea given by TPG.

It would be great if you guys and gals would have a look at your national
programs, supporting Linux, digitization, computer literacy and education.
Participation in such programs could spread the word about OpenMandriva in
a great way and also give us a chance for grants/sponsorship money, which,
in their turn, could pay our further participation in exhibitions and cover
 the technical costs we have.

 Please participate!

In which local (or international) programs we could take part?

 Thanks and cheers

 Kate
