Re: [onap-discuss] Call for vCPE VNFs proposals

2017-05-31 Thread Zhou, Danny
The wiki
page
 already lists preferred and usable open source VNFs like below, but the ONOS
vBNG as open source vBNG and OpenWRT as open source vHGW does not make sense to
me. Specifically, the ONOS vBNG is essentially a L3 NAT without the
capabilities to address requirement such as session management, traffic
aggregation and routing, etc., and in addition to OpenWRT acting as vHGW, VPP
based high performance Home
Gateway as well as
vRouter should be better.

  *   vDHCP: ISC DHCP
  *   vDNS:   ISC Bind
  *   vAAA:   FreeRADIUS

I recommend that any available open source implementations of these VNFs also
be included. I am aware of several potential VNFs as used in the R-CORD
project, and as being collected through the similar ODL VCO (Virtualized
Central Office) project. These are being collected and assessed for deployment
on OPNFV reference platforms as part of the proposed "Edge" project:
https://wiki.opnfv.org/display/PROJ/Multi-Access+Edge intended to expand
reference VNF options for edge-focused service deployments such as residential
broadband. As a part of this project we will also be building reference
blueprints (TOSCA based) for these VNFs and orchestrating them using ONAP
components as well as other projects we are currently using for this in OPNFV

OPNFV is acquiring the necessary hardware (e.g. OLT devices) to have a
fully-functional edge-focused lab environment in which to complete this
integration. I'll add the related info to the ONAP wiki as the usability of the
open source VNFs becomes clear.

Dear ONAP community,

As we all know, the Residential Broadband vCPE use case is one of our two
targeted use cases for R1.
Its wiki
page
 has been significantly enriched recently, and more details are added on a
daily basis.
A general residential broadband solution can be much more complex than what
would be reasonably achievable by R1. We have narrowed down the description of
the use case for R1, to something that should be both achievable and usable.
For the use case to work the following VNFs will be needed:

  *   vBNG
  *   vHGW
  *   vDHCP
  *   vDNS
  *   vAAA

In addition a simple hardware box with 802.1ad capabilities will be needed.

This is a call for vendors of such VNFs and/or such a box to join the activity.
Would be great if by Beijing time the wiki will have at least one vendor name
alongside every VNF, and also at least one vendor for the box.

  *   vBNG
  *   vHGW
  *   vDHCP
  *   vDNS
  *   vAAA

In addition a simple hardware box with 802.1ad capabilities will be needed.

This is a call for vendors of such VNFs and/or such a box to join the activity.
Would be great if by Beijing time the wiki will have at least one vendor name

Re: [onap-discuss] Staging repo in settings.xml

2017-05-31 Thread Gary Wu
Hi Oliver,

There are definitely disadvantages to keeping all versions in sync, as you
mentioned.

I think the main issue to decide on is this: To what degree will the ONAP
community support a mix of different versions of different modules?
If each module is independently versioned, then which specific version
combinations will ONAP officially support for each ONAP release?

* If we only support one canonical combination, then we might as well keep all
versions in sync.
* If we support arbitrary version combinations, then the number of possible
combinations becomes astronomical.
* Or maybe it's somewhere between the two, i.e. keep a small list of specific,
supported version combinations, maybe corresponding to a few critical fixes
only.

Any bug fix or version bump in any module has the potential to introduce a
breaking change against some specific versions of another module, or even
breaking compatibility with a VNF that had been certified against a particular
"base release" of ONAP. How should we address such issues? How should we
respond to people who are using a version combination that is not officially
supported?

I can see pros and cons to either approach (sync all versions or not), which is
why the TSC probably needs to weigh in on this.

Thanks,
Gary

Gary,

thanks for the summary.

I would NOT try to keep the version numbers in sync. Either way creates work
and I believe keeping them in sync creates much more work.

E.g. if you apply a patch to a jar file (let’s say an emergency security patch
which will come..) in a release branch does that mean everybody has to generate
a jar file with the matching version number and push it out even if nothing
changed? So that creates work for 31 projects (current count) when one project
fixes a bug in one jar file. Does even the documentation projects have to bump
the version number on there documentation because somebody edited a jar file?
That either slows down patching or generates a lot of work for a lot of people.

Even keeping mayor version numbers in sync is questionable to me. E.g. if two
years from now a new project is started and ONAP is on release 4.x.x does that
mean a fairly new jar file should start out with release number 4.x.x ? That
would indicate much more maturity then the jar file probably has at that point
in time and is misleading to the user.

So I would have an ONAP release number and version numbers of artifacts which
tie into a release. I am not quite sure why that would be more work then above.

I just wanted to confirm that SDN-C has pushed out the major updates that were
planned for the 1.1 release.

The most significant changes in this release – all related – are:

1. Upgrade to OpenDaylight Boron release
2. Upgrade to Java version 1.8 (required for Boron)
3. Upgrade to Ubuntu 16.04 (required for Java 1.8)

Is May 5th still the target? if so is this going to be a new release?

Re: [onap-discuss] VID VM , MariaDb docker does not remain running

2017-05-31 Thread Arun Arora (c)
Hi Joseph,

Thanks a lot for your suggestion.

For me also, renaming vid_openecomp_epsdk to vid_openecomp did the trick.

However, we had a different view of this that the DB name should be
“vid_openecomp_epsdk”; so we didn’t make the name change.

We had this impression due to another similar issue being discussed in which
the DB name was mentioned to be vid_openecomp_epsdk.
(https://lists.onap.org/pipermail/onap-discuss/2017-May/000911.html)

So, although the issue is fixed, a closure is required on whether the DB name
should be vid_openecomp_epsdk or vid_openecomp so that the required changes can
be merged in the master. Do let me know if I can submit the change.

Thanks & Regards,

Arun Arora

Arun,

could your issue be related to the one described
here:https://wiki.onap.org/questions/5736012/answers/6586792.
 If yes, could you find a solution there? If not would you mind to record your
issue with the VID database in
https://wiki.onap.org/questions?
 I am running two instances of ONAP right now on v. Openstack and ith helped in
the first instance.

I had some issues with exact the same database today in my second instance and
in tried something different to what is provided as a solution in the above
mentioned link (to give vidadmin rights to everything), I changed the script in
/opt/vid_vm_init.sh and changed the DB name from vid_openecomp_epsdk to
vid_openecomp. And VID worked too.

Btw, if you want to attach to one of the docker container, vid-mariadb needs to
be running. "docker start vid-mariadb " gives you the database container back
and you can exec to vid-server or/and vid-mariadb

Hello,

I would like to use the slides that was presented as part of ONOS Introduction

Could you please provide me the link to download the same?

I assume all the materials of ONAP are open-sourced and can be utilised by
public. Please let me know if otherwise.

[onap-discuss] How modular is ONAP?

2017-05-31 Thread Viswa KSP
Dear All,

I'm trying to study the architecture of ONAP from scalablity & modularity
perspective.
While most of ONAP components are dockerized, still the demo deployment is
happening via VMs in example demo deployment.

While I understand that the release HEAT file is just a demo and not to be
taken for typical deployment use-case, I would like to understand how
modular the contents are.

For example, assume I have my own inventory mgmt system, what effort does
it take for me to integrate that to ONAP, instead of using AAI? What if I
wanna plug-in my own SA system etc.

Please point me to some SMEs in ONAP, so that I can continue my discussions
with them.

Viswa
