Hi all-- We here at Bibliomation *think* there is a way in Evergreen to set consortially a limit on the total number of hold requests that can be placed for patrons. For instance, we're thinking of restricting it to 5 total at one time for all patrons. Has anyone on the list limited the number of total requests? Can it be done for just title requests? What happens to those patrons that already have, say, 30 requests, and we put this into place? Do they have to wait until their requests get down to 4 before another one will go through? Any information provided on this feature would be greatly appreciated. Since we're not even sure if this feature exists, we have no idea how to set it. Thanks! The Evergreen International Conference Selection Committee is very pleased to announce the 2015 Conference will be held in Hood River, Oregon. The committee unanimously selected the proposal submitted by Buzzy Nielsen of the Hood River County Library District. The Site Selection Committee consisted of Shauna Borger (Evergreen Indiana), Grace Dunbar (Equinox), Amy Terlaga (Bibliomation), Tanya Prokrym (NC Cardinal), Debbie Luchenbill (MOBIUS Consortium), and Beth Longwell (Sage Consortium). From the proposal: Hood River is in the heart of Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area and the Mount Hood recreational area. We believe that Evergreen users, programmers, and enthusiasts would have a fantastic time both during the conference and on their down time in our beautiful, active, unique community. Dates of the conference will be announced soon. The plan is to hold the conference in May 2015. The conference will be held in Cambridge, Massachusetts from Wednesday, March 19 to Saturday, March 22, 2014. This year's theme is Together We Grow. REMINDER Deadline is October 31st The Evergreen 2014 Conference Program Committee is accepting proposals to present at the conference! The theme of this year's conference is Together We Grow. Innisfil PL are doing so many interesting things like a maker lab drop ins (http://www.innisfil.library.on.ca/maker-labs) and planning for a maker space in their new branch. EVERGREEN LIBRARIES UPDATE IN THE SPOTLIGHT: The International Institute of Social History in Amsterdam migrates to a new version Evergreen The International Institute of Social History in Amsterdam (IISG), the Netherlands, is pleased to announce the successful migration to a new version of Evergreen, the 2.2 rc1. The International Institute of Social History, the world's largest documentation and research center in the field of social history, that first started to use Evergreen in September 2011, just migrated for the first time to a new version, Evergreen 2.2 rc1. After an extensive research and development process the in-house developer Vyacheslav Tykhonov managed to do all the work successfully and he migrated all data to this new version. This was a very important update, which will bring substantial improvements to existing features, solving a lot of bugs. So at the moment IISG is using a good working and stable library system. This major update brought lots of improvements to existing functions as well as some absolutely new features, like creating the possibility for any chart to be shared on any website. Basic Evergreen functionality was extended with Digital Humanities tools to make graphic representations of data stored in the library system, such as visualization tools, maps and timelines. A lot has happened with the Missouri Evergreen public library consortium in the last few months. Debbie Luchenbill was hired as the new Evergreen Coordinator and she began at the end of August. There are now eight (almost nine!) libraries live on the system and 16 libraries officially part of Missouri Evergreen, with more to join soon. By August of 2013, thirteen libraries will be live. [OPEN-ILS-GENERAL] Evergreen Newsletter, November-December issue
is one of four libraries that have joined the Howe/Evergreen Project. After migrating to Evergreen in 2010, the Howe Library in Hanover, NH formed the Howe/Evergreen Project to share their Evergreen system with other libraries in New Hampshire. The four libraries who have joined the Howe/Evergreen project have never been automated. By sharing a system and receiving support and training from the Howe Library staff, these small libraries are able to have access to a first-rate system at a reasonable cost. === Missouri Evergreen added 3 more libraries in November. They added Lebanon-Laclede County Library, Stone County Library, and Webster County Library. === Evergreen Indiana recently welcomed its 100th member. With the recent addition of the Peabody Public Library (Columbia City) as the 100th member library, the Evergreen Indiana catalog now provides access to over 6.7 million items and serves 962,252 Indiana residents. This milestone has been four-years coming as Evergreen Indiana has grown into one of the largest shared-catalogue consortiums in the world. === The Berklee College of Music Stan Getz Library, which went live on Evergreen in August, has a small campus with a library in Spain also running Evergreen. The library is called the Berklee Valencia Library. === The COOL consortium in Ohio just upgraded to 2.3 and will be adding three more libraries in the next 6 months. The three libraries are Worch Memorial Public Library, Blanchester Public Library, and Wornstaff Memorial Public Library. Their group link is here: http://info.cool-cat.org/. === The Balsam Consortium in Maine has been awarded a MFC Grant to create de-duplication tools. The Consortium has now grown to 17 library systems encompassing 27 branches. [OPEN-ILS-GENERAL] Holds Functionality - Looking for Development Partners
Hi all- One of our multi-branch libraries is looking for additional holds functionality so that holds between their branches work better than they currently do. Here's the situation, described by Ben Shum: A library system has multiple branches, and each owns their own copies/patrons. Library A owns a copy of an item and Library B does not. But patrons from both A and B place holds against the material. Because of how holds target / opportunistically capture, the patrons at Library A receive the item first while the item continues to circulate in and out of Library A, while the patrons at Library B never get their holds fulfilled. It would be preferred that Library A's copy be used to fill holds for both Library A and B's patrons in the order the hold was placed regardless of pickup location. While we understand that having additional copies for each branch could solve the issue, it may not be possible for the library to purchase and assign copies to each branch. Instead, they're hoping that it is possible to re-prioritize holds within their system to follow a stricter first-in, first-out (FIFO) policy. However, the concern has been made as to how FIFO might adversely alter how the library system shares material with the rest of the consortium. There would need to be some way to fold in the other consortium's holds at some point so that the library and its branches wouldn't become a walled off entity within the consortium. In talking with Equinox, we have learned that this functionality exists in FulfILLment and that we could side-port it into Evergreen. He provides a basic overview of the system, focusing on three distinct areas that one would develop in. Bibliomation used IdeaTorrent, open source idea submission and voting software recommended by SITKA, to allow their members to vote on their enhancement suggestions. The top vote getters made the list of thirty, soon to be submitted to Evergreen developers. Once Bibliomation receives the quotes, we'll most likely be looking for partners on some of the work. Hello, friends - here is our May Evergreen Newsletter: Conference Edition Amy May 2012 Evergreen Newsletter: Conference Edition Two-hundred-and-seventy-one members of the Evergreen community convened in Indianapolis during the last week of April for our fourth annual Evergreen International Conference. This was a sizable increase from last year's number of 180 attendees. Our community continues to grow up and out, with representatives from Mexico, Finland, the Netherlands, Canada, Wales, and the U.S. in attendance. Jim Corridan, Shauna Borger and their crew from the Indiana State Library kept us all busy, informed, and entertained during the four days of the conference. Here are some of the highlights: Hackfest / Interest Group Day (Wednesday) The Wednesday Developer Hackfest proved to be very fruitful. A number of projects were tackled including making Syndetics content appear in TPAC and a Mexican-Spanish translation of the catalog. Dan Scott showed the others how to sign off on patch contributions, too. The Documentation Interest Group (DIG) meeting was led by Yamil Suarez of Berkeley College of Music in Boston. IN THE SPOTLIGHT: Reports Interest Group, by Jenny Turner, PALS Over 30 individuals interested in reports in Evergreen met ; attendees were from a variety of libraries with various experience using Evergreen's reports interface. Meeting attendees broke into groups according to interest. Jenny Turner (PALS) convened a QA session for Evergreen Reports newbies and investigators. Conference Opening Remarks: The State of Evergreen (Thursday) IN THE SPOTLIGHT: The State of Evergreen, by Tara Robertson, Systems and Technical Services Librarian, Emily Carr University of Art + Design I was asked to participate in The State of Evergreen because of the unsung heroes project. I loved the series of blog posts that Chris Cormack has been doing to highlight Koha community members and adapted his idea for the Evergreen community. I learned two things. First, people were reluctant to promote themselves and write bios listing all their accomplishments. I shouldn't have been surprised by this. It was more effective to ask someone's coworker, colleague or boss to highlight their contributions. I like that our community values humility, but know that most people enjoy being recognized for work that they are proud of. Second, some people felt that the work that they did was insignificant and not worthy of being recognized. Almost all of these people were women who had been nominated by other people in the community. After an email or two all of these people agreed to be profiled. I want to help foster a culture where we recognize and value all sorts of contributions that are key to making the community strong, sustainable and an enjoyable place to be. What do you want this community to look like? Why do you put your time and energy into making Evergreen better? Not the best, but trust me - so many other combinations ended in failure. And by the way, the Grand Rapids conference crew transferred the Twitter account over to us, including all those users who had signed up to follow the 2010 conference. I'd be open to #evergreenoss or #evergreenils, but they are very long in the 140 character world. #openils works, but is it too broad (without the context of the history of Evergreen's name, this could easily apply to any open source ILS, which is fine, but is that what we're going for in our common-law marriage hashtag)? I'm assuming for this year's conference we'll use #evg11, which brings up another argument for extreme brevity. Conferences are often when folks want to add more than one hashtag to an update. I'm thinking of sessions at ALA like Top Tech Trends, which usually has its own hashtag, along with the conference hashtag and sometimes, just for fun, a LITA hashtag. It can leave very little room to actually say anything about the session! Hi all- It was pointed out to me that even though the Evergreen 2011 Conference twitter account is egconf11, that doesn't mean that we have to have #egconf11 as the hashtag. So #evg11 is still a possibility if people like that better. And since everyone's weighing in on this.. I guess I would favor #evgils Or #evgils++ as all the cool kids do in the IRC I think having the 'v' in there helps to identify it as Evergreen. And I'm not afraid of a little evil. And regarding the interest group meetings, it really depended on how many we received, but since someone has already recommended that we not hold the DIG meeting at the same time as the reports meeting, we may be looking at an early start for these interest group meetings. Don't hold me to that right now - the conference committee is meeting this Friday so we'll make sure the start time for these interest groups gets covered.
