Yes, I did get VNC to work. No, I did not get a terminal service like solution
to work.
The trick with getting VNC to work was to turn off all visual effects, then I
could simply ssh in and issue vncserver and vnc to which ever port number was
handed out.

So I discovered an issue with the approach I am using. It only allows me to
VNC in after I have already logged in from the console. So if the server goes
down, like a power outage, and then comes up it's not possible to vnc in until

If you kill compiz and can get a terminal window open, just type "twm",
and it will start the window manager. I don't recall the steps needed to
make it a permanent change. Again this is a workaround if VNC shows a
white screen and killing compiz seems to solve that.

Try killing the compiz process owned by the vnc server. If it doesn't
like compiz, you can run another window manager like twm.
