[opensuse] Where's my local mail?

I'm using Kontact/Kmail to collect mail from two external ISPs, no problem. I have also setup an account to collect mail from /var/spool/mail/bob but nothing arrives in my inbox. OTOH, following activity in a terminal window, I sometimes get the message 'You have new mail in /var/spool/mail/bob
