Vendor changes notwithstanding, all versions of openvpn from 2.2.x to
2.4.x should interoperate nicely.

In some cases, issues arise due to newer SSL libraries - like, if the
E4200 generates a MD5 signature for its certificate, newer clients will
not accept this without config changes (because SSL libraries consider
MD5 grossly insecure nowadays). But in general, you should be fine.

My router openVPN is v2.4.3. I guess I can use the latest client on my
computer to work with it.

Thanks,
James

Generally install the latest version, although on Linux you can probably
stick to whichever version your package manager provides. Different versions
shouldn't be an issue, but you could run into crypto library
(OpenSSL) compatibility issues if the age gap is several years.

To find the OpenVPN version on your router, open the command line and run
"openvpn --version". Some other commands you may want to run on both client
and router are "openvpn --show-tls" and "openvpn --show-ciphers"
to check that they have some compatible choices between them.

While I always recommend running up to date software, tread carefully if
upgrading your router firmware. Read documentation and read it again,
because things will go wrong if you use the wrong file, do things in the
wrong order, the magic numbers are off by one or the wireless antennas are
not aligned with the horns of the unicorn standing on the north pole of
Mars.

[Openvpn-users] dd-wrt router openVPN server version and client version must be the same?

2018-05-13 Thread James Peng via Openvpn-users
Hello everybody,

I have bought an used Linksys E4200 version 1 router and was told the
openVPN was installed already.

Now I am trying to set it up. I need to install a client on my computer and
generate those files. which client version should I install on my computer?
The same version as the dd-wrt router or the latest version? if the same
version as the server is required, how can I find the openVPN server
version?

thanks,

James
