'man tar' at the unix command line should help.
try putting the tar file on a different mount point and using:
'tar -xvf 8172_solaris_32_patchset.tar
/oracle/app/oracle/product/8.1.7/patches/8.1.7.2'
(without the quotes, of course).

Look near the end (~70% through) of the
$ORACLE_HOME/rdbms/mesg/oraus.mesg file (on unix at least) for events.
