Thanks for all who have replied. My lack of Unix understanding is becoming
very clear. Please bear with me. If top is showing the SGA's memory added
to the user's allocation, why does pmap show what it does? Oracle has been
less than helpful. Any
Hey gang. New job, new problems. I have just been handed a 8.1.7.0.0
database on solaris 5.8 with a little problem.
Everything time a client connects, regardless of type, the OS dedicates
over 200+ Megs of RAM (as shown by Top) to the user process. Naturally,
this is running the box out of memo
Does anyone know how or if it is possible to change the NLS_LANG value for
a database that has already been created?
I believe the answer is no, but I wanted a sanity check (Lord knows I need
one). Thanks.

Make sure that the user 'administrator' has been added to the local ORA_DBA

Completely depends on the school and teacher/master. Most places, laughter
is acceptable, unless you are training with people who take it very
seriously. On the other hand, continual laughter might be distracting. If
they have a problem with it, find another school. After all, you are paying

OS or database job? If OS, we just solved this issue. Assuming your target
node is not a PDC or BDC, the NT user must be local and the preferred
credentials of the node in OEM must be set to the same user. Hope it helps.

'Oracle heterogeneous services' are purchased separately. They are services
that run on the target systems that allow Oracle to talk to them through
Net*8. We use an Oracle gateway to talk to our AS400s. For the most part,
this works well. Call your rep.

I just bought 3 STANDARD UPC server licenses for our site. We saved 275K by
not using Enterprise. Email me if you want the details. Walt is right, they
are lying to you. (The concept of trusting salespersons for technical
issues is inherently wrong.)

That worked. How simple! I was looking for something much more complicated.
KISS.
I assume that PL/SQL is doing a conversion on the datatype that SQL
doesn't.

OK, I admit it. In 3 years as a DBA I haven't had to deal with a single
LONG RAW column. BLOB, CLOB and BFILE yes LONG RAW, no. So here is my
Monday morning challenge.
I had a database hose itself on Sunday. I rebuilt the database, but it is
still misbehaving (looks like hardware). I can't get a

We use it for all of our small, under 10 gig, NT databases (at last count
we had 13). Many of the features of Enterprise are just not needed for
these systems because the user/data volume is small and we are not using
replication or fine-grain access control. All of the 3rd party applications

Metalink shows that there is no patch available for 8.1.7 on NT. Is that
correct or am I needing a vacation? I hate to be cynical, but an Oracle

We have done this on several machines without a problem. Don't use the
