Given that you don't seem to have access to the hardware, I'd suggest
timestamping. Choose say a few dozen points in the process and collect
timestamps at each one. Compare the prod timestamps to the test timestamps,
something may jump out,

Hash join is favored when there aren't so many records and there's enough memory to slam together the result set.
I think you aren't seeing typical behavior. Try this on much larger tables and see

I am using it for some of my new databases and so far there are no
issues. I have long ago given up on caring how many extents there
will be. I only tend to size for tablespace sizing purposes. I had
no issues before hand and I have no issues
