Re: [P2P-F] [NetworkedLabour] Into the digital void? – International Socialism

2016-10-17 Thread Michel Bauwens
it's a brave attempt to de-fang what is happening so that it doesn't
threaten a classic anti-capitalist position, fair enough,

(as they say in french, 'circuler, il n'y a rien a voir')

but seeking commonality, we can agree with the author that:

"Technology will always be used by capital to reinforce its domination, but
can equally be used by workers to create a society not based on profit but
on the requirements and needs of society. The battle for control may well,
as Marx stated, be the key to human liberation, but rather than being
located in the “immaterial”, such struggles are firmly rooted in the
material challenge to capitalism."

The point is, not just to understand the world, but to do something about
it

The professor's way , given the magazine it's published in, is likely to
count on the workers to strike against capital; but not to actually create
alternatives that take advantage of the new material conditions.

[P2P-F] Fwd: [CommonGood] fyi: new book on progressive social movements

2016-10-17 Thread Michel Bauwens

From: Birgit Daiber

Subject: [CommonGood] fyi: new book on progressive social movements
To: "commong...@listi.jpberlin.de"

Dear Friends and colleagues, at the Frankfurt Book Faire I present my new
book on progressive social movements - as it is (for the moment) only in
German, here is a short information in English:

„And yet it moves ... Progressive social movements and their relation to EU
and UN“

New progressive social movements give impulses for societal change since
the Fifties of the Twentieth Century. They differ from political parties in
their timely limited and thematic margins, their demand for grass-rout
democracy – and they act transnational resp. international. Their success
simultaneously implies their failure: Neither they are able to generate
their experiences nor they can develop and follow concepts of general
societal change.

This is a storybook with a collection of narratives on ’68-Movements,
Womens-, Environmental-, Peace- and the Alter-Globalisation-Movements. It
tries to illustrate their specific character and the reciprocal influence
between progressive social movements and institutional politics of European
Union and United Nations.

It’s last chapter covers an outline of the Europeanization of Trade Unions’
Movements – the European Trade Unions Federation - ETUC. Of all things the
grand “old” sister of the new progressive social movements was able to
create a genuine European organization – besides the deep national
differences in their traditions and structures. Since their foundation in
1973 they fight for the social dimension of the European Union.

The epilogue is a reflection on the relation between political parties and
progressive social movements with special regard to the Europeanization of
politics.

Und sie bewegt sich doch ... Progressive soziale Bewegungen, die EU und die
UNO. AG SPAK-Verlag, Neu-Ulm, 2016.

[P2P-F] first peer-reviewed study of peer production communities

2016-10-17 Thread Michel Bauwens
HOLD ALL YOUR HORSES, Adam Arvidsson's (et al.) analysis of 3 years of P2P
Value research, with the P2P Foundation as one of the 8 partners, has been
published:

https://www.academia.edu/…/Commons_Based_Peer_Production_in…

Amongst the conclusions ,

ONE, " CBPP is part of a broader transformation in the information economy
whereby collaboration and common knowledge have come to play an ever more
important part in value creation. This development has roots that go back
to the industrial revolution in the 19th century and it has been greatly
accelerated by the diffusion of digital media. CBPP or CBPP like modes of
production have become a core component to the contemporary information
economy as a whole."

Conclusion 2: CBPP occurs in highly particular kinds of communities. They
are not kept together by frequent interaction or a tight web of social
relations. Instead they are kept together by sharing a common imaginary
that posits a transformative potential on the part of the particular
practice to which these communities are dedicated.

Conclusion 3: Contributions to this potential through technical skills
and/or virtuous conduct is rewarded with reputation. Reputation is the form
of that exchange value takes in CBPP communities, it is the 'fictious
commodity' typical to CBPP. Reputation is also the most important value
form that structures transactions between CBPP and other institutional
logics, such as that of markets, capitalism and the state.

Conclusion 4: The value of reputation lies in its ability to give a
proximate measure to risk. The fact that value is principally related to
risk means that CBPP communities operate a value logic that mirror that of
financial markets.

first comments by myself: hi Adam, I hope this is close to the uncensored
version I've read ; GREAT ANALYSYS that was, hoping to re-read it in
this version
1) the fact that these are imaginary communities is very important, since
this echoes the emergence of the nation state (benedict anderson)
2) reputation is part of a new value regime, even if it mirrors what
financial markets are doing very badly
3) in the other document, you wrote that 85% of studied communities
practices new forms of contributory accounting, also a very strong sign of
new value regimes (see the book 'double entry' for the previous shift)
