How to detect Hard Key press event?

Hi all, In my application I want to do specific tasks on pressing 6 Hard Keys of the palm without launching default applications (addressbook, memopad, todo list etc.). Say incrementing one counter on pressing each key. How can detect that event and launch my own code on that event? Is is
