: Re: VORBIS COMPARED TO MP3
As far as I can tell, vorbis rocks compared to mp3 files. That's when you
put vorbis at a 128 bitrate. Of course, I don't mind having mp3 files at
320 but at 128 ogg vorbis files sound great. Although nothing compares to
a
wave file.

for the computer or are there portable

Kevin and list,
I've been doing some testing with the vorbis versus mp3 conversion last
night. With mp3s, you can go down to 96kbps and you start to hear the
compression. Knock it down to 80 and it sounds really compressed. With

Hi Shannon and list,

I'm curious.
Take care,

Greetings!
This topic has probably been thrashed to absolute hell.
What are peoples thoughts on these 2 compression methods, does one have any
advantages over the other? I've never played with Vorbis.

Vorbis is definitely far better than mp3 :
First on the philosophical level : it is an open-source standard, so no
copyrights involved.
2 : the soundquality is far better than mp3 and allows a bigher sampling rate.
A 160kbps ogg will sound clearer than a 320kbps mp3.
I really encourage you to
The following are my personal opinions. The best way to come to a
conclusion is to check it out yourself.
1. I find that Vorbis is a considerably better format. The file size to
quality ratio is considerably more favorable. The fact that Vorbis is open
source works very much in its favor. As I

There are some portables that play Vorbis. They're quite few and far

Rather than just say that there are players, why don't you tell us the names
of those players?

I know someone who has an IRiver, I know that these amazing pieces of equipment
will play Vorbis and... well... just about any other format you care to mention
if you're prepared to load the software.
