Re: best bit rate.
Billy! MP3 and OGG are both audio file compression systems. What is your reason for converting MP3 files to OGG? Performing this conversion might give you smaller files but the audio quality will go down. Consider the following quote from the Ogg Vorbis General FAQ. The higher the bit rate and the deeper the bit depth the higher the quality of the resulting audio and the more space it takes up and the longer it takes to transfer. It comes down to a question of economics. Ultimately if you can afford the space and can cope with the longer time it takes to transfer larger files then you wouldn't want to use either MP3 or OGG. (Begin Quote) Can I convert my MP3 collection to the Ogg Vorbis format? You can convert any audio format to Ogg Vorbis. However, converting from one lossy format, like MP3, to another lossy format, like Vorbis, is generally a bad idea. Both MP3 and Vorbis encoders achieve high compression ratios by throwing away parts of the audio waveform that you probably won't hear. However, the MP3 and Vorbis codecs are very different, so they each will throw away different parts of the audio, although there certainly is some overlap. Converting a MP3 to Vorbis involves decoding the MP3 file back to an uncompressed format, like WAV, and recompressing it using the Ogg Vorbis encoder. The decoded MP3 will be missing the parts of the original audio that the MP3 encoder chose to discard. The Ogg Vorbis encoder will then discard other audio components when it compresses the data. At best, the result will be an Ogg file that sounds the same as your original MP3, but it is most likely that the resulting file will sound worse than your original MP3. In no case will you get a file that sounds better than the original MP3. Since many music players can play both MP3 and Ogg files, there is no reason that you should have to switch all of your files to one format or the other. If you like Ogg Vorbis, then we would encourage you to use it when you encode from original, lossless audio sources (like CDs). When encoding from originals, you will find that you can make Ogg files that are smaller or of better quality (or both) than your MP3s. (If you must absolutely must convert from MP3 to Ogg, there are several conversion scripts available on Freshmeat.) (End Quote) Chirp|Chirp|Chirp: It's the Bat, Chirping Bat .Com ! MZ B100 not changing Play Mode.
Hi all. I have just purchased the Sony MZ b100 and cannot get it to change from Stereo to Mono play/record mode. Can anyone tell me if I'm doing anything wrong please. What I do is as follows: 1 Plug in my remote control/headphones. 2 press the record button then pause. 3 press the Play Mode button - This is the second of the row of buttons, immediately below display. I listen to the sound of my fingers on the built-in microphones and nothing changes, so I press the Play Mode button again, and again and again. But for some reason, the device is not cycling through the play options. Any ideas folks? Best wishes. Andy from sunny Kilcreggan. splitting mp3 files
Hi. I'm wanting to copy a portion of an mp3 file, about 30 seconds or so, and save it as a separate file, to use as a ring tone on a mobile phone. Can anyone suggest a program that I could use to do this? Thanks in advance for the help. re: wireless headphones info
Hi I have phillips wireless FM headphones and have used them with my computer. The antenna is built into the headphones. The base unit also has an aerial in it and some sockets. One is for the power adapter, the other is the charging cable which plugs from the base unit into the headphones to charge the aaa batteries in the headphones. The third socket is for the cable to go from the sound source to the base unit of the headphones. I've had this working well when plugged into the sound card of my computer. I normally have speakers plugged into the sound card, and my speakers have a headphone jack built into them. To keep things simple I just plug the phones into the speaker headphone jack rather than unplugging the speakers from the sound card and having to plug in the base unit of the hones all the time. Of course other versions of wireless headphones may have different design. Mine are FM and I can quite quite a distance away from the base unit and get a reasonable si gnal. - Original Message - From: Don Smith [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: pcaudio pc-audio@pc-audio.org Date: Thu, 7 Apr 2005 16:07:07 -0400 Subject: wireless headphones info Hi: I am thinking of experimenting with wireless headphones. Re: wireless headphones info
Hi Don: I've had quite a bit of experience with wireless headphones. Here are some thoughts concerning your query: 1. If you are in to experiencing the quality of sound that you can obtain from a good wired set, you'll have a tough time finding them; and if you do find them, they will be big bucks. 2. The headphone transmitters are very easy to overload causing distortion: especially if you like extra base or treble. 3. The 900 MHZ frequency is susceptible to blind spots when, for example, you go to another room. I would advise you to purchase a wireless headset from a store that will allow you ample time to try them with a view to refunding your money if you are not completely satisfied. Another option you might consider is a good digital FM transmitter and use some kind of a radio receiver to receive the signal. This too, however, has its drawbacks. I'm sure that others can add, agree, or disagree, about my comments. Cheers. - Original Message - From: Don Smith [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: pcaudio pc-audio@pc-audio.org Sent: Thursday, April 07, 2005 5:07 PM Subject: wireless headphones info Hi: I am thinking of experimenting with wireless headphones. Hi Tracey. I'd use GoldWave because it's cheep and I do quite a lot of this kind of stuff. If you only want it for this one piece of work, there is a small program called mp3 cut or something like that. Best wishes. Andy from sunny Kilcreggan. re: wireless headphones info
I use Senheiser wireless headphones and can't say enough about them. They consist of a base unit which has two wires, one going to the power adaptor and teh other going to a y-adaptor so I can always keep them and the speakers plugged in at the same time. I just turn off the speakers if I want to just listen over headphones. The thing I like about these headphones is that they have a second battery that charges in the base unit, so you can just swap out the batteries when one dies. Re: MZ B100 not changing Play Mode.
Hi Andy, there is no play mono mode, only a mode to record manaural. Therefore, one doesn't use the play mode button to change the setting, but rec mode. The rec mode button is the one above trackmark. *** Michael Lang *** You wrote: Hi all. I have just purchased the Sony MZ b100 and cannot get it to change from Stereo to Mono play/record mode. Can't mute microphone
My new SBLive! 24 came with the Creative surround mixer. I cannot use this program. JAWS doesn't find icons, and without the graphics, one doesn't seem to be able to do anything. However, I can activate the microphone with the Windows standard mixer sndvol32. But after I do that, I always hear it via the speakers. So I get noisy feedback. I think, that one can mute the microphone via this SBLive! 24 surround mixer, which I can't use. Does anyone here know of another way to mute the microphone, so that one can record from it, but doesn't hear it via the speakers?
