Re: flash card recorder

2006-02-19 Thread Michael Lang
Hi Krister,

There's a great review of the M-Audio Microtrack on BlindCoolTech as
well. The recorder needs more than 20 seconds to start and after that,
it opens the menu automatically. To turn it on, you'd have to wait for
20 seconds or so, after you've pressed the on button. After that time,
you'd have to exit the menu. I wouldn't want to use such a thing.

RE: Media Player: Ripping/Burning

2006-02-19 Thread Kat
I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who helped guide me
through the process of burning/ripping, especially Tony and Kevin. Your
most recent messages were extremely helpful, and I so appreciate the easy to
follow instructions. Although I am not an expert, I can honestly say that
the burning/ripping challenge has been met. (big smile) It has been a
month of time consuming/frustrating trial and error, but the pay off is
certainly rewarding. (thumbs up)

FYI: The problem was that I used a MP3 format to burn the files. It was
confusing, because the CD played just fine in a commercial CD player and/or
in a computer, and actually allowed me to rip them on to a different
computer. I could never get the files to show in Media Player's burn/play
list. However, thanks to Kevin I tried using the Audio CD format.

The files appeared properly in the list view. Actually I'm burning with
Media Player, rather than iTunes, as the software is easier to use for
sorting files in the list view. I don't suppose anybody out there has an
easy way to sort files in iTunes? Other than that issue, iTunes is a pretty
good program.

It is so frustrating! When I open a folder of songs in the iTunes library,
the order is completely rearranged. The iTunes documentation said that the
files could be copied into the play list and/or resorted in the library, but
I simply can't figure out how to use JFW to do that. Fortunately Media
Player doesn't rearrange the files so I'll stick with it unless somebody can
help.

Thanks again,
Katrina

Hi Katrina,

Here's how to burn cd's using the media player.

First from your my music folder, select the tracks you want to burn and add
each one you want to burn to the burn list. The add option is in the file
menu. Once you have the files you want, hit alt-tab to your focus is in the
media player program. from there, press tab to get to the first of the burn
buttons and hit space on it. Then hit the tab key about 9 times to reach the
second of the buttons which is the start burn button. Once you're on that,
press enter on it and you should be in business. Hop this helps.

 Hi Katrina,

First, you'll need to upgrade your media player to the latest version
 which
 is 10.0

Once you have that, you can follow these instructions for ripping cd's
 with
 it.

Ripping a cd to your hard drive using the windows media player
Perhaps the easiest way to do this is to insert the cd into the hard
 drive.
A dialog box will then come up and prompt you to take an action. These
 will
range from exploring the files on the cd with the windows explorer, to
burning a cd with your preferred rom burning program to ripping the cd
 with
 the
windows media player or simply to take no action. Once you've chosen the
 rip
action press enter and the cd will rip to the following folder:
 c:\documents
 and settings\my documents\my music location.
If you choose to take no action and want to perform the rip manually,
 select
the windows media player application, then tab to the firsst of the rip
 music
buttons and press space to activate it. From this point, hit tab about 9
times to access the second rip music button and hit space on that. The
 tracks
will be ripped to the folder named above.
To perform a selective rip, once you tab to the second of the rip buttons,
hit the tab key once more and you will be in the tracks listbox. By
 default
you are at the top of it and the tracks appear in a vertical order so the
down arrow moves you to each corresponding track. all of the tracks are
 checked
by default at first. Simply uncheck the tracks you don't want to rip by
hitting the down arrow and spacebar then shift-tab once to the rip button
 and
press space on it and the selected tracks will be ripped into the my music
folder. Hopefully this explanation makes sense.

There is definitely a difference between the receivers that hook directly
into your stereo, as opposed to the ones that you tune your FM radio dial to
receive the XM radio. I would base it on a comparison of audio tapes to
CD's. That's how much difference there is between those two, at least to
me.

Well now, it all depends on the equipment being used. If you're using a
crappy pare of speakers, then it'll show. I have a XM MyFi and really love
the quality on my home stereo unit, so everyone's ears are different.

Hi. I think you may be slightly exagerating your comments. Sure,
there's some high end loss but not enough to make the station
unlistenable. If you have a decent pair of stereo speakers the sound
is quite acceptable. You should also be aware that any new radio
station can possibly have teathing problems. I heard a commercial
station in Australia in 1980 which came on the air and because their
limiter wasn't working properly they had to keep adjusting the sound to
compensate. Foor goodness sake, give Jonathan a fair go and remember
where some of you got your start in broadcasting. If he hadn't started

hi. I've noticed the *exact* same thing, and I know of 2 or 3 other
people who have noticed it too.
It's as if there is absolutely no high end on the signal, like an AM
radio station might sound, or something like a 24k or 32k mp3 stream
may sound. I'm not in any way complaining about this as I explained to
Jonathan privately, but I wanted to confirm what Dana is saying here.
It's like there's a whole lot of bass, but very little to no high

Re: Has anyone tried the Replay Radio Upgrade?

2006-02-19 Thread Ron or Susan Denis
Replay-Av 7.04, the latest version is as easy to use as previous versions
but can be made more complicated if one so chooses. The latest version
allows greater choices in how the MP3 is recorded. One can record streams
directly without going through the soundcard at all although I am not sure
that this will work as well with a dial up as it will for someone who is
online. Though some menu items have moved about, it is essentially the same
interface. Replay radio 7.04 works the same as AV minus the ability to
record streams that are not passed through the sound card and it will not
record video as AV will. I've not recorded video so can't say how well that
might work.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who helped guide me
through the process of burning/ripping, especially Tony and Kevin. Your
most recent messages were extremely helpful, and I so appreciate the easy
 to
follow instructions.

It was
confusing, because the CD played just fine in a commercial CD player
 and/or
in a computer, and actually allowed me to rip them on to a different

Other than that issue, iTunes is a
 pretty
 good program.

It is so frustrating! When I open a folder of songs in the iTunes
 library,
the order is completely rearranged. The iTunes documentation said that
 the
files could be copied into the play list and/or resorted in the library,
 but
I simply can't figure out how to use JFW to do that. Fortunately Media
Player doesn't rearrange the files so I'll stick with it unless somebody
 can
 help.

 Thanks again,
 Katrina

 Hi Katrina,

Here's how to burn cd's using the media player.

First from your my music folder, select the tracks you want to burn and
 add
each one you want to burn to the burn list. The add option is in the file
menu. Once you have the files you want, hit alt-tab to your focus is in
 the
media player program. from there, press tab to get to the first of the
 burn
buttons and hit space on it. Then hit the tab key about 9 times to reach
 the
second of the buttons which is the start burn button. Once you're on
 that,
press enter on it and you should be in business.

To perform a selective rip, once you tab to the second of the rip
 buttons,
hit the tab key once more and you will be in the tracks listbox. By
 default
you are at the top of it and the tracks appear in a vertical order so the
down arrow moves you to each corresponding track. all of the tracks are
 checked
by default at first. Simply uncheck the tracks you don't want to rip by
hitting the down arrow and spacebar then shift-tab once to the rip button
 and
press space on it and the selected tracks will be ripped into the my
 music
folder. Hopefully this explanation makes sense.

2. Fixed: Typo on the options dialog Leave source file intact option.
3. Fixed: APX files that weren't NULL terminated could cause a crash.
4. Fixed: Files that were skipped would show Error instead of
Skipped in the
status column.
5. Changed: Improved the error reporting in the status column after a failure.
6. Fixed: Possible small memory leak (100 bytes) on missing file
decompression /
conversion errors.
7. Changed: Increased the statusbar size to better hold batches of

allowed during

12. Fixed: The list control would flicker more than necessary when
working with long
lists of files.

Version 4.01b1 (January 8, 2006)

1. NEW: Features new user interface. (written in C++ and threaded for
dual-core computers
-- making it nearly twice as fast to compress, decompress, and
convert with a dual-core
setup)
2. NEW: New interface supports external codecs using simple XML
configuration scripts.
3. Changed: MACDll.dll is unified to include SDK, Winamp, and
CoolEdit support in
one component.
4. Fixed: Corrupt / invalid APEv2 tags could cause problems in some cases.
5. Fixed: APL creation could use track boundaries that were off by
1/44100th of a
second in some cases.
6. Fixed: APL creation would not properly report errors when the CUE
file didn't
point to an existing APE file.
7. Fixed: In very rare cases, decoding an old APE file could cause an
invalid decompression
error.
8. Fixed: When converting from APE - APE, the APEv2 tag could get
appended as WAV
data to the new file. (instead of as a file tag)

How to get what you hear without the crackling on SB Live Value?

Hi all,

I have a Dell Dimension 8200 equipped with an OEM version of the SoundBlaster
Live Value card. After upgrading the drivers to a version that does support
the what you hear functionality, I now have a highly annoying crackling sound
after any text is spoken by JAWS and possibly other situations as well.
Applying a patch to disable turbo mode has reduced but not entirely
eliminated this crackling. Any pointers to drivers that actually fix both

That's because, after all, FM is only a 15khz audio signal, whereas
thec compact disc spec goes up to 20khz. Ditto the dynamic range

Multitracking accessible software questions.

I am currently using Soundforge to edit for a radio program which at times
involves the need for multitracking work and the mixing of tracks. I have

I am told that Cooledit is capable of doing this task better, but I do

I am also loooking at Studio Recorder, and so far it is my impression that
this does not do multitracking and mixing.

If anyone has any information about these specific software products or any
additional ones in regard to multitracking, I would very much appreciate
your feedback. Thank you in advance for any help you might be able to offer.

 Hi Krister,

There's a great review of the M-Audio Microtrack on BlindCoolTech as well.
The recorder needs more than 20 seconds to start and after that, it opens
the menu automatically. To turn it on, you'd have to wait for 20 seconds
 or
so, after you've pressed the on button. After that time, you'd have to
 exit
the menu. I wouldn't want to use such a thing.

name is Krister Ekstrom and i live in Sweden and i've been around on
various lists for a while now, for example the midi-mag list. I'm
very interested to hear about the blind friendlyness of the Edirol
R1 and also the portability of it. Has anyone done a review of it
from a blindness perspective and where might one find it and if not,
could someone who owns an R1 tell me a little about it? Right now
i'm shopping for a new recording media and it stands between a Sony
Mz-m100, md player which doesn't seem to be available in Sweden and
an R1. Thanks for any info you can give. /Krister

How good are these for recording? How would you mix jaws speech with it to
use it for maybe recording MainMenu reviews? It seems really bad that you
can't control windows sound quite how you'd want to, say control the volume
of each channel on a multichannel sound card or mix audio from multiple

that would do this, be cool if the company making it would make one for
windows.

 Hello listers.

 I recently purchased a plantronics dsp-500 headset. It uses a u s b
connection and software/firmware for its operation.

By using the software one is suppose to adjust various audio
 characteristics

of the headset such as balance, volume, tone and eq characteristics as
 well
 as microphone volume and muting.

If you are blind however using a screen reader (in my case Jaws) it
 appears,

that there is no access to the menus used to make such adjustments.

Is anyone familiar with the plantronics headsets and if so have you
 overcome

 the accessibility problem?

Any help will be very much appreciated.

Hi everyone. Replay Radio is now Replay A/V. It offers a number of

If so, did you find the new version to be as easy to use as 6.0?

Thanks in advance for any and all thoughts.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who helped guide
me
through the process of burning/ripping, especially Tony and Kevin. Your
most recent messages were extremely helpful, and I so appreciate the easy
 to
follow instructions. Although I am not an expert, I can honestly say
 that
the burning/ripping challenge has been met. (big smile) It has been a
month of time consuming/frustrating trial and error, but the pay off is
 certainly rewarding. (thumbs up)

FYI: The problem was that I used a MP3 format to burn the files. It was
confusing, because the CD played just fine in a commercial CD player
 and/or
in a computer, and actually allowed me to rip them on to a different
computer. I could never get the files to show in Media Player's
 burn/play

Other than that issue, iTunes is a
 pretty
 good program.

It is so frustrating! When I open a folder of songs in the iTunes
 library,
the order is completely rearranged. The iTunes documentation said that
 the
files could be copied into the play list and/or resorted in the library,
 but
I simply can't figure out how to use JFW to do that. Fortunately Media
Player doesn't rearrange the files so I'll stick with it unless somebody
 can
 help.

 Thanks again,
 Katrina

Here's how to burn cd's using the media player.

First from your my music folder, select the tracks you want to burn and
 add
each one you want to burn to the burn list. The add option is in the
 file
menu. Once you have the files you want, hit alt-tab to your focus is in

 the

 that,
press enter on it and you should be in business.

To perform a selective rip, once you tab to the second of the rip
 buttons,
hit the tab key once more and you will be in the tracks listbox. By
 default
you are at the top of it and the tracks appear in a vertical order so
 the
down arrow moves you to each corresponding track. all of the tracks are
 checked
by default at first. Simply uncheck the tracks you don't want to rip by
hitting the down arrow and spacebar then shift-tab once to the rip
 button
 and
press space on it and the

There is definitely a difference between the receivers that hook directly
into your stereo, as opposed to the ones that you tune your FM radio dial to
receive the XM radio. I would base it on a comparison of audio tapes to
CD's. That's how much difference there is between those two, at least to
me.

It's as if there is absolutely no high end on the signal, like an AM

Windows Media Puzzle

2006-02-19 Thread Jim Portillo
Hi there,

Perhaps someone can explain something to me. Do you remember how a couple of
weeks ago, I asked about two things regarding Windows Media Player?
One of them dealt with being able to stream almost every other website with
content using Media Player, except for one which I had been able to stream with
no problem a few days before.
Well, I had taken my laptop and had gone to that site again from another place,
and low and behold, it worked fine. There were no problems.
But, I brought it back home and attempted to listen to it here, and it wouldn't
work again. I tried the experiment once more, and got the same results.
Can someone explain this to me? It's odd.

How do you clear the burn list after the disk is burned?
I really need to get Nero 6, way too many controls in that media player
thing, but it works in a pinch. I wonder if files from yahoo music unlimited
would burn good?

I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who helped guide
me
through the process of burning/ripping, especially Tony and Kevin. Your
most recent messages were extremely helpful, and I so appreciate the easy
 to
follow instructions. Although I am not an expert, I can honestly say
 that
the burning/ripping challenge has been met. (big smile) It has been a
month of time consuming/frustrating trial and error, but the pay off is
 certainly rewarding. (thumbs up)

FYI: The problem was that I used a MP3 format to burn the files. It was
confusing, because the CD played just fine in a commercial CD player
 and/or
in a computer, and actually allowed me to rip them on to a different
computer. I could never get the files to show in Media Player's
 burn/play

The add option is in the
 file
menu. Once you have the files you want, hit alt-tab to your focus is in
 the
media player program. from there, press tab to get to the first of the
 burn
buttons and hit space on it. Then hit the tab key about 9 times to reach
 the
second of the buttons which is the start burn button. Once you're on
 that,
press enter on it and you should be in business.

To perform a selective rip, once you tab to the second of the rip

Ok, you only need ports open if you're hosting a server. On the othr hand,
your firewall might be blocking windows media.

 Hi there,

Perhaps someone can explain something to me. Do you remember how a
 couple
of weeks ago, I asked about two things regarding Windows Media Player?
One of them dealt with being able to stream almost every other website
with content using Media Player, except for one which I had been able to
stream with no problem a few days before.
Well, I had taken my laptop and had gone to that site again from another
place, and low and behold, it worked fine. There were no problems.
But, I brought it back home and attempted to listen to it here, and it
wouldn't work again. I tried the experiment once more, and got the same
 results.
Can someone explain this to me? It's odd.
 Jim

I don't have a firewall.
It's honestly the weirdest thing because from one day to the next, it
