Re: cd rom skipping

2006-11-19 Thread nick danger
Houdy yall,

I have a lens cleaner that works in both my stereo system and in my pc and
have knock on wood had no trouble with it. Just make sure if you buy one of
those that it says that it can be run in a computer. You can also use a
mild dish cleaning liquid to clean a CD as well. I've got some articles on
this stuff around here somewhere. If I find them I'll put em up.

I sometimes worry that a laser lens cleaner might not be safe in a cd or
DVD
computer drive because they spin so fast. Most drives run at normal speed
when a standard music cd is running and I think the cleaners look like an
audio disk to the player. However, I had a plugin for Winamp that ran
 audio
disks at 4x or higher to improve the scanning of the data. That's when I
started wondering if a lens cleaner might be unsafe to run in some
 systems.

 Hi sharon,

Before you break down and spend cash on a new rom burner, you should
 try
using a laser lens cleaner on it. It will save you a bunch of headaches
 and
should take care of the skipping problem. You can grab one from radio
 shack,
or the electronics department of any store like best buys, circuit

happy-sounding tone sequence to indicate success. These companies

The 660 uses three profiles, in which every menu item is set. One can
set a recording source, automatic or manual recording level control,
recording quality and lots of other things in these profiles. Switching
between the three profiles is easy, one only has to go to the first menu
item and in it, one can do that. But making all the settings for each
profile is difficult for a blind person. I asked somebody sighted to do
that for me. After it, I only switched from profile to profile and
therefore don't know, whether the menus wrap or not.

*To me that's highly significant. If I am interpreting what your saying

Vicky! The Edirol R-09 is a stand alone high quality audio recorder.
It records to a Secure Digital card. It could certainly be used to put
cassettes and LP's onto your computer. You would just record them with the

drive.

Re: Binaurol or Stereo Mikes

2006-11-19 Thread Jerry Richer
Vicky! There are special microphones for use in binaural recordings
but I believe that many people just use two otherwise regular microphones.
Binaural recordings take into consideration the effect that the head and ear
has on the perception of sound at the ear. Regular stereo recordings don't.
The two microphones of a binaural recording setup are typically placed in
the ear canal or the ear canal of something simulating a human head with
ears.
 There's a good article at:

OK, I'll include replies to a couple of messages in this one. Judy, you
wrote:

hope that an accidental push of a key wouldn't throw you into a menu

Going to another profile inadvertently is hardly possible, since you
have to go into a menu to do that.

Keith, you wrote:

It depends. If you do not need more than three profiles, working with the
Marantz may indeed be easier than working with the Edirol. But if you
for instance, need to sometimes record with the automatic level control
and the internal mic, sometimes with the manual recording level control
and the internal mic, sometimes with the automatic level control and an
external mic and sometimes with the manual recording level control and
an external mic, you'd already need four profiles, and if you then
sometimes wanted to record via the line-in ... So, if you're happy with
three profiles, the 660 should be quite easy to handle.

Bob, you wrote:

Just wanted to find out a little bit about the machine in question, as the
Canadian Broadcasting Corporation in Canada is using these machines quite
extensively in the field. Can't understand why they didn't go with the R09
at half the price. Up to this point they were using the Sony mini disc, and
before that they were using Sony cassette recorders. I still have a Sony 850
and a 600 reel to reel recorder that I will be getting rid of very shortly.

Well, reporters like to set markers, but the Edirol cannot do that. They
also like to have a built-in speaker, not available on the Edirol
either. The Edirol is for musicians, it's not made for radio
journalists.

Creative Soundblaster Optic connection help

2006-11-19 Thread Andy Logue
Hi all.

I am purchasing an Optic Fibre cable and intend to run this from my AV unit
in one room, through the wall, and into my Creative Soundblaster external 24
bit sound card. At the moment I am using the minijack plug via the line-in
facility. I have been advised that the Soundblaster has an optic connection
which serves for both in and out, though to change this, requires sighted
assistance.

Anyone on the list who is currently managing this task and could give me
some advise please?

Best wishes.

Well, since Steve brought this up I figured I'd update you on what I have
been doing. First of all, thanks to Jonathan for pointing me to your old
Main Menu archives about setting up a Shoutcast server. I spent a better
part of Saturday through Monday of last week making it work. I put the
breaks on the hole thing when I discovered that I need to do some port
forwarding with my router. I got everything to work, but since I don't know
a hill of beans about this, I deleted both the server and the associated
plugins. I'm still rather disappointed, but I did learn so much at the same
time. Hopefully I could find someone who can give me some air time somewhere
via the net. Take care and God bless.

 Hi sharon,

Before you break down and spend cash on a new rom burner, you should try
using a laser lens cleaner on it. It will save you a bunch of headaches
 and
should take care of the skipping problem. You can grab one from radio
 shack,
or the electronics department of any store like best buys, circuit city,
 ETC. Hope this helps.

When I try to play a dvd, I hear skipping. The dvds are new so it can't
 be
that. I tried using one of those discs with the brushes to clean the cd
rom but I still have the same problem. It was suggested to me that I
 may
need to just buy a new cd rom. What do you all think? Thanks.

Yet another realplayer question, simple, I hope!

2006-11-19 Thread Kathy Szinnyey
Hi, all you RealPlayer enthusiasts out there! NOT! Does anyone know how to
tell REaPlayer how to play a wholbe folder, like I want it to play all the
stuff, rax, mp3, wav, that's on my hard drive. In Winamp, it's very simple.
I do love Winamp and would prefer to have it play all my audio stuff, but I
have acquired a nice little pile of Rax files that I can't play on the hard
drive. I know how to play one file at a time in RealPlayer, but is there a
sane way to just tell it to play a whole bunch of stuff?

Thanks for any help!

Kathy
