Re[2]: having trouble with san disk MP3 player.

2007-11-20 Thread pete gurney
hello jason,

yes we both have rockbox installed on a sandisk mp3 player.
i have the c240 and my wife has the c250.
you shouldn't have any trouble installing rockbox so long as you set the
USB mode to msc first.
i've been using rockbox for about six years now and also have it installed
on an archos and iriver mp3 player and have never had any problems with it.
i would make sure you download the rockbox and voice file from the daily
build page of the rockbox website as these will be the versions with the
most features.
and they can have quite big differences in them from day to day.
for example when i first installed the rockbox version for the sandisk
about six weeks ago i found that although the main mp3 player was working
and speaking ok it wouldn't recognise a micro SD card when i put it in the
expansion slot.
at first i thought it was a problem with my player but decided to wait a
while and then update the rockbox files.
so about 3 weeks ago i updated to the latest daily build of the rockbox
files and found that that not only had that problem been solved so my card
is recognised everytime i slot it in but there were a lot of extra speaking
features for the main machine that had been added.

pete.

Thanks,

Inserting Q points, what am I doing wrong.

2007-11-20 Thread Vinny Samarco
Hi,
I am trying to record a cd from a cassette. At the end of each song I
am inserting a Q point and also 4 seconds of silence after each piece. I
inserted the first Q point at the beginning of the file etc. I did this by
pressing control Q at the beginning of each song, followed by the silence.
When I went to split the file I received the message that the first Q poin
was not there. I went back and did it again with the same results.
Any thoughts on what I might be doing wrong?
Thank you.

Problem with a particular podcast

2007-11-20 Thread Dana S. Leslie
I am using Winamp 5.5. Whenever I try to play a podcast downloaded as a .mp3
file from NPR: Story of the Day, I get the message that Winamp has
encountered a problem and has to close. The file plays perfectly well in WMP
or Realplayer, and I don't have this problem playing any other .mp3 file in
winamp, just this particular podcast (as far as I can determine).

I can't be sure if this problem began only after installing 5.5. But could
that be the problem?

Here is a link to the page from which you can subscribe to the NPR; Story of

Ok folks, I tried out the latest (and greatest?) version of Winamp and I had
a few problems running it on the trashbox (otherwise known as the Windows
PC) smile For some reason (I don't know why) Winamp it seems, was
responsible for the Trashbox crashing every few minutes.

Naturally this behavior to anyone (particularly to a Mac user where crashes
are few and far between) lol is totally unacceptable so back onto the
machine went VLC media Player, it was listening to both that I make the
following observations.

Firstly, VLC does a far better job ad decoding media such as MP3 etc, you
can hear the differences quite distinctly.

Controls are similar to those presented in Winamp and in a lot of ways, VLC
is easier to use with a screen reader, not as cluttered as Winamp seems to
be.

I've been using VLC on the Mac for ages but haven't had too much experience
with it on the PC, the command set is slightly different but that's probably
due mainly to differences in the keyboard layout between Mac and Trashbox
Windows PC. For example, you go to previous and next tracks in VLC under the
Mac using command-left and command-right arrow respectively, on the PC
version you use P and N on the keyboard

If anyone would like to give this excellent little media player a try then
use your friend Google and look for vlc, you'll have no trouble finding
it. Takes up a lot less space than Winamp does plus it will play just about
everything you can throw at it, including Cue and Wave/FLAC pairs.

Re: Voice Broadcasting Tutorial availability

2007-11-20 Thread Steve Matzura
On Sun, 18 Nov 2007 05:40:00 -0800, you wrote:

Hello List!

For quite a while, I have had a shoutcast server running and juse it quite a
bit to play MP3 and other files. Now, I would someday like to broadcast live
in voice and need to know how this is done, specificially from a tutorial on
the subject.

It's actually quite simple, especially from your current level of
knowledge, as you already have a server running and can play music
with it. You're halfway there and have already conquered the hardest
parts.

What I am looking for is a step-by-step tutorial, with examples, how to work
this plug-in with Winamp and actually do a little broadcasting using Winamp,
both talking and playing music. I guess this would also include some tutorial
info on Winamp.

I'm not sure that exists, but most of what you want to do is covered
in an ACB Radio turoial on the subject. If that doesn't help you,
I'd be happy to do so off-list, over MSN, Skype, whatever you like.
That goes for anybody. There is a mentoring group inside ACB Radio of
which I am a part, and this is what we do--show people how the tools
work and get them going to become broadcasters.

Also, if someone knows of a program (autimated) or system that a person could
just install and have everything there. Would a system like VIPConduit,
Talking Communities, or any other similar service be use for broadcasting?
Sort of a already put-together studio with everything from server connection
to playing commercials, etc in a box. That would make broadcasting in voice
and playing music easy. If such a thing exist, do let me know. I'm ready to
get going.

The closest thing that's accessible is Station Playlist Creator and
Studio (http://www.stationplaylist.com), with the package price being
comparable to that of SAM Broadcaster which, by the way, really is
very accessible with Window-Eyes and semi-so with JAWS but not as much
as with W.E.

The main thing you have to know about using LINEREC with Winamp is
that you need two copies of Winamp running, and either a very quiet
switch on the microphone to turn it on or offf, or a mixer to plug it
into and thence into your computer. The ACB Radio mentoring group can
and will help you to learn how to set all of these things up, as I
mentioned above.

We have a publication in our newspaper The Age every Thursday and VLC has

needed to come back to Trashbox PC then I wouldn't have bothered

Anyhow, for those who want to try something tha's nice and small and runs

High Dane,
Ok, I will look for it some time today and try it out.
I tried to play a .ram file in Winamp 5.35, but it wouldn't play.
So this may work without me having to download a Real Player.

Naturally this behavior to anyone (particularly to a Mac user where

 VLC

I've been using VLC on the Mac for ages but haven't had too much

RE: Winamp, my thoughts and VLC

2007-11-20 Thread Chris Skarstad
I also have VLC Media player and it's a very interesting little
program. It plays some file types better than others on my system and
if you have your computers on a network it works great. Now, this
Winamp issue...I've been using Windows in all its versions for 10
years, 95, 98 SE, XP and I'm sure at some point, i'll even give into
Vista. But in all that time, I can say with absolute certainty that
Winamp has never caused my computer to crash, in other words just
running Winamp never made my computer crash. I would suspect that in
Dane's case, there are other issues with the computer he is using to
run Windows. It just saddens me that we have people trashing each
other's choices of an operating system, we all need to remember that
everyone's needs are different and while some prefer windows, others
prefer Apple Macks. Let's quit all the mean little jabs here.
You don't see me sitting there calling the apple mack a trashbox, so
I would expect that people would respect my choice even though they
may disagree with it. Come on now.

Hi Brian,
I don't understand why that item in the file menu is not there, I have just
copied some files from my computer by simply going to my MP3 folder and
copying some file to the clipboard, switch to the CD folder and pasted the
files there and pulled down the file menu and there it was and hit the enter
key and it worked like a dream.
Try another CD to see if it works with that.

2007-11-20 Thread Peter Scanlon
Anyone using this program to catalogue recordings and MP3's. I would like to
get some tips.

Also would like recommendations on the most speech friendly program of this
type. It must cater for Vinyl and other formats as well as CD.

I know this has been covered in the past here, but programs change and new ones
might be out there.

Re: VLC media player

2007-11-20 Thread Dana S. Leslie
I installed VLC, to give it a test drive.

Can anyone tell me how to select an output device other than the Windows
default device? In the preferences, under audio, I find a device selection
spinbox. But the choices in the spinbox are just numerals, not names of the
soundcard I want to select from.

If I'm going to give this thing a fair test, I'll have to play it through my
good card and speakers, not the el cheapos that I use for JAWS, and that are
my system default.

Blessed Be,

2007-11-20 Thread nick danger
Hi chris,

Well said, it's time somebody got it right. Whatever system you have if it
works for you use it and respect those who use other stuff.

Now onto a winamp question I have and hopefully somebody can fill me in.
While attempting to use the cddb feature in winamp 5.5 I got a message
saying that it was not installed. is there a way to get it re-installed or
is the removal of it due to changes within nulsoft and the gracenet service.

Anyhow, for those who want to try something tha's nice and small and runs

Ok folks, I tried out the latest (and greatest?) version of Winamp and I
had
a few problems running it on the trashbox (otherwise known as the Windows
PC) smile For some reason (I don't know why) Winamp it seems, was
responsible for the Trashbox crashing every few minutes.

Naturally this behavior to anyone (particularly to a Mac user where crashes
are few and far between) lol is totally unacceptable so back onto the
machine went VLC media Player, it was listening to both that I make the
following observations.

Firstly, VLC does a far better job ad decoding media such as MP3 etc, you
can hear the differences quite distinctly.

Controls are similar to those presented in Winamp and in a lot of ways, VLC
is easier to use with a screen reader, not as cluttered as Winamp seems to
be.

I've been using VLC on the Mac for ages but haven't had too much experience
with it on the PC, the command set is slightly different but that's
probably
due mainly to differences in the keyboard layout between Mac and Trashbox
Windows PC. For example, you go to previous and next tracks in VLC under
the
Mac using command-left and command-right arrow respectively, on the PC
version you use P and N on the keyboard

If anyone would like to give this excellent little media player a try then
use your friend Google and look for vlc, you'll have no trouble finding
it. Takes up a lot less space than Winamp does plus it will play just about
everything you can throw at it, including Cue and Wave/FLAC pairs.

Total Recorder works with Vista?

I've just looked at the details for 6.1 and Vista isn't mentioned.
The web page does say it will work up to XP, and probably other
Windows operating systems, but they seem not to commit themselves.

I wonder if Total Recorder has or hansn't managed to get around the
crippling of audio in and out in Vista? (Note, I hear this is part of
Vista, but don't know actually that it is as yet denying access to
anologue in-out as well as SPDIF.) I believe some Vistacomputers come
with no audio in-out sockets.

Whatever else may or may not be true about Vista, this factor for me
makes Vista a definite NO NO.

 This

 Basic steps:::
I required some sighted assistance, but since I am telling you these

 For shuffle;
 1) Go to main menu on iPod classic. By hitting menu on the top of the

 2) You should be able to hear an audible click, as you move from
 option to
option on a menu. In this step it doesn't matter if the click is
 set to go
through the head phones, or the iPod internal speaker.

Click down the menu, until you hear no more audible clicks.
 3) Go up one click (and/or option). And hit enter (select button).
 It should
shuffle the songs and start playing.

 Now playing:
 1) Go to the main menu.
 2) Go to the very last option, and hit enter.
*note: If there hasn't been a play session started, you will

 1) Go to main menu, and go to the very first option [music].
 2) Go all the way down until the iPod classic stops clicking, and
 go up one
 click.
 3) Listen away.

Re: Winamp, my thoughts and VLC

2007-11-20 Thread Timberwolf
Ok.

Lets make a few things clear.

1. What in the world is your problem with windows. If you don't like it,
don't use it, not to mention don't call it a trashbox, you don't see me
sittin here calling your mack a trashbox. I haven't used a mack because I
don't know if there are any screenreaders available and certainly I haven't
heard of any.

2. Secondly because, imho anyway, apple's products are a bit overpriced and
not to mention I wish other companies would support mack (if mack is so
great, etc). I've got an acer aspire 3000+ here, hp pavillion dv5220, and
just recently got an alienware, 2.3 ghz intel duel core processor, 2 gb ram,
top of the line etc.

Now, the reason I'm saying this is because some people, like you, prefer
mack. That's perfectly fine. Some people such as myself like windows and are
used to it, therefore use it. Now, I'm not saying anything bad about a mack-
so why're you jabbing fingers at windows? for that matter, if mack does
everything you say it does, why are you using windows in the first place if
you don't like it?

I hope I don't look like I'm flaming you but, that's just my oppinion, and
also I kind of feel insulted when people call windows a trashbox, while not
giving supporting evidence of such. While microsoft may have its drawbacks,
I see nothing wrong with vista, just some things to get used to, and
besides, people are complaining about it all the time, but I personally
don't mind it. Now I know this is a pc audio list and will add that it could
be your computer that's causing the crash. winamps never crashed on my
system, although I once loaded a .ogg file which free download manager was
downloading and it lagged my pc bad! (of course, this was on the acer
with like 1.6 ghz, 256 mb ram) so I upgraded the thing with another 512 mb.
So hey, Dane, if you don't mind e-mailing me off list, I'd like to see a
mack in action and get the specs on the thing. Also would like to know if
any screenreaders are available and how good they work.

Subject: Winamp, my thoughts and VLC

Ok folks, I tried out the latest (and greatest?) version of Winamp and I
 had
a few problems running it on the trashbox (otherwise known as the Windows
PC) smile For some reason (I don't know why) Winamp it seems, was
responsible for the Trashbox crashing every few minutes.

Naturally this behavior to anyone (particularly to a Mac user where
 crashes
are few and far between) lol is totally unacceptable so back onto the
machine went VLC media Player, it was listening to both that I make the
 following observations.

Firstly, VLC does a far better job ad decoding media such as MP3 etc, you
can hear the differences quite distinctly.

Controls are similar to those presented in Winamp and in a lot of ways,
 VLC
is easier to use with a screen reader, not as cluttered as Winamp seems to
 be.

I've been using VLC on the Mac for ages but haven't had too much
 experience
with it on the PC, the command set is slightly different but that's
 probably
due mainly to differences in the keyboard layout between Mac and Trashbox
Windows PC. For example, you go to previous and next tracks in VLC under
 the
Mac using command-left and command-right arrow respectively, on the PC
version you use P and N on the keyboard

If anyone would like to give this excellent little media player a try then
use your friend Google and look for vlc, you'll have no trouble finding
it. Takes up a lot less space than Winamp does plus it will play just
 about
everything you can throw at it, including Cue and Wave/FLAC pairs.

Ok, well I'd best explain, what I said was in gest (and I'm sorry took
things the wrong way, a whole heap of touch-feely people out there
smile, makes the world go round I guess, I explaiend what my problems were
and I needen't go any further.
Second, if you had problems like I had with Windows with your Mac then yep,
I reckon you'd have every right to call a Mac a Trashbox if you writing
in fun-like as I was but to answer your question, there is a Screen Reader
for the Mac called VoiceOver and there has been another in the past called
Outspoken, probably the discussion of this is outside the scope of the list.

VLC Media Player documentation

2007-11-20 Thread Dane Trethowan
Ok, here's where you'll find a whole heap of documentation on VLC, go to the
VLC item in the program group and select documentation, you'll be taken to
the VLC documentation web page, I've just downloaded the PDF manual so I'm
about to plough through that.

 Ok.

Lets make a few things clear.

 1. What in the world is your problem with windows. If you don't like it,
don't use it, not to mention don't call it a trashbox, you don't see me
sittin here calling your mack a trashbox. I haven't used a mack because I
don't know if there are any screenreaders available and certainly I
 haven't
 heard of any.

 2. Secondly because, imho anyway, apple's products are a bit overpriced
 and
not to mention I wish other companies would support mack (if mack is so
great, etc). I've got an acer aspire 3000+ here, hp pavillion dv5220, and
just recently got an alienware, 2.3 ghz intel duel core processor, 2 gb
 ram,

 top of the line etc.

Now, the reason I'm saying this is because some people, like you, prefer
mack. That's perfectly fine. Some people such as myself like windows and
 are

used to it, therefore use it. Now, I'm not saying anything bad about a
 mack-

so why're you jabbing fingers at windows? for that matter, if mack does
everything you say it does, why are you using windows in the first place
 if
 you don't like it?

I hope I don't look like I'm flaming you but, that's just my oppinion, and
also I kind of feel insulted when people call windows a trashbox, while
 not
giving supporting evidence of such. While microsoft may have its
 drawbacks,
I see nothing wrong with vista, just some things to get used to, and
besides, people are complaining about it all the time, but I personally
don't mind it. Now I know this is a pc audio list and will add that it
 could

be your computer that's causing the crash. winamps never crashed on my
system, although I once loaded a .ogg file which free download manager was
downloading and it lagged my pc bad! (of course, this was on the acer
with like 1.6 ghz, 256 mb ram) so I upgraded the thing with another 512
 mb.
So hey, Dane, if you don't mind e-mailing me off list, I'd like to see a
mack in action and get the specs on the thing. Also would like to know if
any screenreaders are available and how good they work.

Firstly, VLC does a far better job ad decoding media such as MP3 etc, you

I've been using VLC on the Mac for ages but haven't had too much

with it on the PC, the command set is slightly different but that's
 probably
due mainly to differences in the keyboard layout between Mac and Trashbox
Windows PC. For example, you go to previous and next tracks in VLC under

VICTOR READER STREAM DAISY, MP3 AND NISO PLAYER IS NOW AUDIBLE READY

Portable MP3 Player Specifically Designed for the Blind and Visually
 Impaired now Compatible with Audible.com

 Longueuil(Canada), November 15, 2007

Victor Reader Stream, the pocket-sized portable MP3 player designed for
blind and low-vision people now has the capability to play the popular
Audible.com books. In addition to the variety of audio formats (MP3,
 DAISY,
and NISO books and music) supported by Victor Reader Stream, the Audible
format will provide a huge additional choice of content to the users.
Audible is the leading provider of spoken audio on the internet, providing
over 140,000 hours of digital audio editions of books, newspapers and
 magazines.

The Stream has extensive navigation features for moving through audio
 books
and text files, including functions that allow you to move to the next
chapter, section or page, or to set bookmarks. For Audible books, the
 user
will be able to navigate from one Audible heading to the next, move by
increments of one-, five-, or ten-minute time jumps, and move with an
accelerated fast forward feature that announces the amount of time lapsed.
Blind and low-vision people who listen to talking books on a regular basis
often prefer to speed up the playback. For all audio book formats that
Stream plays, including Audible, variable speed control with digital pitch
correction allows the reader to accurately listen at higher than normal
 playback speed.

The player is completely accessible by blind and low-vision users. All
 keys
and messages are provided through audio feedback. The player has a
 built-in
User Guide and a Key Describer mode to remind the user of keypad
 functions.
It comes with integrated text-to-speech voice, allowing it to play
 text-only
files and announce the track names of music files. It uses an SD memory
 card
to store books and music transferred from a computer.

We are very happy to bring the advanced navigation features of Stream to
the Audible listener experience, says Gerry Chevalier, HumanWare Victor
Reader Product Manager. I know of no other Audible-ready player that
 offers
accessibility, variable speed playback, and advanced navigation, all in
 one
 package.

We are very much aware of the value and popularity of Audible books for
the blind and visually impaired, says Will Lopes, Vice President for
Business Development at Audible. We are pleased to work with HumanWare to
bring the benefits of the accessible Victor Reader Stream player to
 Audible
 listeners.

Victor Reader Stream can be purchased online at www.humanware.com (in
 USA).
Current Victor Reader Stream users will need to upgrade their player to
software version 1.1 in order to play Audible books. The latest version
 1.1
software upgrade is also available online at www.humanware.com.

 About HumanWare

TR 7 to be released soon/was Re: Total Recorder

2007-11-20 Thread Norma A. Boge-Conyers
Here's the original post about the upcoming release of Total Recorder
7.0...HTH Norma

From: Jani Kinnunen [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Subject: Total Recorder V7.0 Will Be Released Soon
Date: Fri, 2 Nov 2007 07:12:50 +0200

Hi,

I thought some people might be interested in the following pre-announcement.

Jani

Total Recorder V7.0 Will Be Released Soon!

High Criteria Inc., the world leader in computer audio recording systems,

announces the upcoming release of Total Recorder Version 7.0 and New Version

of

Video Add-on!

Total Recorder v7.0 is now becoming more powerful functionally and obtaining

more new features for users. New Total Recorder's kernel mode Driver offers

the following solutions:

list of 2 items

. Total Recorder is now fully compatible with Windows Vista (without any

limitations).

. There is no sound distortion when recording the sound from applications,

which involve the use of DirectSound (for instance, Skype 3.x).

list end

Total Recorder V7.0 Standard Edition offers a number of new features

including:

list of 3 items

. The feature of exporting/importing Total Recorder's settings and scheduled

jobs is added. It can be useful if you need to reinstall your system, move

Total Recorder from one computer to another one and for backup.

. In the new version of the program you can rename one file or a batch of

files from playlist using tag information.

. New version of Total Recorder is distinguished by higher speed and better

file compression when encoding files to FLAC format due to using the latest

version of FLAC sources.

list end

Total Recorder Professional Edition Version 7.0 includes all updates

released in the Standard Edition and has the additional changes:

list of 2 items

. Total Recorder offers the unique TimeShift feature which enables you to

exercise simultaneous listening and recording. It means that you can record

the

audio file and listen to it without waiting for the recording process to be

finished. You can also listen to the file from any position while recording

it.

. Cue-sheet files are now supported by Total Recorder. ?ue-points can be

created:

- Manually, e.g. to make a bookmark in a sound file.

- Automatically during recording session based on pause reduction, changes

of clip info in an external player, etc.

- Automatically during capturing Internet transmission when information

about a track is changed (if such information is provided by server).

A file can be splited at any time using CUE-points.

list end

We are currently working on implementing capture (rip) of

Internet-broadcasts in MP3, WMA and Ogg Vorbis formats directly without

decoding and re-encoding

(in addition to the ability of recording Internet-broadcasts of various

formats via external players). During recording you will also be able to

listen

to the steaming audio from any position of the broadcast you have already

captured.

New version of Video Add-on includes the following features:

list of 5 items

. Support of video files of the following formats is added: - Digital Video

(DV); - Windows Media Video (WMV) formats. We are currently working on

implementing

support of MPEG2 and MPEG4 formats.

. You can watch and record TV programs from TV-turner.

We are currently working on

implementing

support of MPEG2 and MPEG4 formats.

. You can watch and record TV programs from TV-turner.

. Ability to record from digital DV format camera, connected to PC via

IEEE1394 interface.

. Built-in feature of turning off Video Acceleration for screen recording (a

separate utility was intended for this purpose previously).

. Performance characteristics are enhanced, so playback is improved and

saving of video files becomes faster.

list end

Our developers now are working on support simultaneous watching and

recording of Internet WMV streams.

Subject: Re: Winamp, my thoughts and VLC

Controls are similar to those presented in Winamp and in a lot of ways,
 VLC
is easier to use with a screen reader, not as cluttered as Winamp seems
 to

If anyone would like to give this excellent little media player a try
 then
use your friend Google and look for vlc, you'll have no trouble finding
it. Takes up a lot less space than Winamp does plus it will play just
 about
everything you can throw at it, including Cue and Wave/FLAC pairs.

The Mac Screen Reader is indeed VoiceOver but it is not built-in to the

so why're you jabbing fingers at windows? for that matter, if mack does
everything you say it does, why are you using windows in the first place
 if
 you don't like it?

Controls are similar to those presented in Winamp and in a lot of ways,
 VLC
is easier to use with a screen reader, not as cluttered as Winamp seems
 to

If anyone would like to give this excellent little media player a try
 then
use your friend Google and look for vlc, you'll have no trouble finding
it. Takes up a lot less space than Winamp does plus it will play just
 about
everything you can throw at it, including Cue and Wave/FLAC pairs.

Ok, yes I did find them and I posted a web site to the list, by the looks of
things it didn't get there so I'll hunt that up again and resend it, having
problems with mail here over the last few days.

Hey, Dane, have you found those plug ins, that you boasted about, recently?
Not to go over a bad patch, in our recent correspondence, but, when I
finally drifted off, to do other things, you sort of drifted off too! Just
was wondering whether or not you had come across the stuff that you had said

were so great! grin

We are currently working on

implementing

support of MPEG2 and MPEG4 formats.

. You can watch and record TV programs from TV-turner.

Yes, in braille. If you want each line and its associated checked or
unchecked graphic read aloud, you still have to press the say line command,
on each line, as you scroll from line to line; the up and down arrows alone,
still won't read each line, as you move from line to line. This is a bit
clumsy, but it does work.

Does it alert you to which track is selected and which isn't?

I just installed version 11, ripped a CD, and didn't have any problems. JAWS
is still reading the track list, as it did in 10.5.

oh, I forgot to say, you have first to have labeled both graphics (the
checked and the unchecked), with JAWS' graphics labeler. -- Dana
