One suggestion which I have used for as long as I can remember.
Bookmark the multimedia page and go to it directly.
The link doesn't change from day to day so you can by-pass those previous
steps and be directly on the page for selecting a game.
I've even made this simpler for myself by creating a hotkey for the

Are you looking for a hardware MP3 player like an iPod or are you
looking for an MP3 player for your PC like Winamp or Windows Media
Player? I'm assuming the former.

Are you looking for anything in particular, such as an off the shelf MP3
player or something designed specifically for the blind? How much
capacity are you looking for?

I personally recommend the 1GB Zen Stone from Creative. It doesn't have
a display, so it's totally accessible. You can also use Windows Explorer
to copy songs to it, so there's no issue with accessible software for
your PC. You can play books on it from Audible.com, Overdrive.com and I
assume other book providers. It costs around $35.

On the downside, it only has 1GB of storage, although I heard you can
get the same model in a 2GB version now. It also only supports MP3 and
WMA (although not lossless WMA).

I personally recommend the 1GB version, although if you can get the 2GB
model, that would work too. Creative has a few MP3 players called the
Zen Stone, like the Zen Stone Plus. These other players include an FM
radio, a voice recorder and they come with a display. I've heard some
blind people report on these lists that they've have trouble with
respect to accessibility with these models and others say they haven't
had any problems with them.

Rockbox is a replacement for the firmware running on your MP3 player

not an MP3 player for your PC like winamp or Windows Media Player where
you can organize your music and sync it with a MP3 player.

There's a lot there, but check out rockbox.org for more information.

I haven't used the new features enough sadly to give any useful info. I do
like the way the left and right arrow keys now move you through your file.
I like the added marker movements such as control + Shift end to move the
finish marker to the end of the file. Useful when your editing and have
moved the finish marker and want it back out to the end of file.

I need to get on the ball and get a part 7 done that addresses the newest
 features of GW.

Re: Portable MP3 Player Question

2008-03-31 Thread Christopher Chaltain
Well, I personally have Rockbox installed on an iRiver H10 for my hard
drive based MP3 player. It has a 20GB capacity. I'd suggest looking at
Rockbox and the MP3 players it supports if you're looking for more
capacity. Remember though that Rockbox is a firmware replacement for
your MP3 player, and it's open source. Furthermore, it wasn't designed
specifically for the blind. I think they've made great strides lately in
installing Rockbox to your MP3 player, but I wouldn't go into it
assuming that it's going to work for you quite as easily or quickly as a
self extracting Windows application. you may have to do a bit of
reading, research and investigation, as well as some trial and error.
Also, Rockbox has a lot of support for the open audio formats but not
for the proprietary ones. I think they do support WMA, but you're not
going to have any luck with Audible.com or Overdrive.com. Check out more
information at Rockbox.org.

As far as MP3 players designed specifically for the blind, I've heard a
lot of good things about the Victor Stream, although I don't have one
myself.

Hi all, you can certainly install Silverlight if you want to, and the need
for it is increasing, however you don't have to install it for MLB. The old
player based on Windows Media Player still works. Kelly Ford discovered this
and posted about it on the BlindTech list, and his instructions worked fine
for me. Here's what he says.

I've been able to make the WMP control work as of today. I set JAWS to read
all graphics in the HTML page by pressing ins+v and choosing that graphic
option. The default is only tagged. There are then two graphics listed as
trans. I select the second of these and the WMP player is used to play
audio.]

Wow, I'm not sure! When I installed Rockbox on my iRiver H10, I had to
download the build specifically for the iRiver H10 and then install it
by hand. It didn't turn out tobe that difficult, but I did have to pay
close attention to the installation instructions. I know with more
recent builds of Rockbox, you can get an installation utility to make
your life easier, but I haven't used them yet.

If you need the relatively small savings from using variable settings that
you
will get, it's already too late.

 Rick,

Hydrogen Audio has a full discussion on the joint stereo controversy,
including extensive commentary from one of the leading members of the
development teams of the technology. With recent Lame codecs, the
technology has fully matured and I now rip all my stereo CD's at 256 VBR
 in
joint stereo using Exact Audio copy. Nothing beats EAC at any price.
Joint stereo now offers a better listenable sound with the same or smaller
file size than CBR. Try ripping a few of your favorite albums with EAC
 using both and then decide.

 Subject: ripping audio

 Hi everyone,

 I have about 200 cd's that I ripped back in 2003. I didn't know a lot
about ripping audio then and I used a high priced mp3 ripper from Xing
labs called audio cataylist 2.0 . I ripped everything at 160 k bit joint
stereo 44.1 khz sample rate. I'm seriously thinking about re ripping
all the cd's again. I'm considering WMA lossless, or Mp3 at 320 k bit.
Any suggestions? I hear people say do not do joint stereo? What do you
audiophiles out there suggest? Also is Windows media player up to the
task? I know it can do both mp3 and wma lossless formats.

 Thanks,

 Rick

Re: ripping audio

2008-03-31 Thread Gary Petraccaro
I highly prefer avoiding all of the variable options. I wouldn't go below
192 if I used mp3, would not use joint stereo because I have heard
instruments move around with it, and wouldn't necessarly use lossless unless
I expected to need to redo recordings at higher bit rates for some reason.
Just my $.02.

can't listen to games on game day audio

2008-03-31 Thread John Schwery
I can't get any games on game day audio. After clicking on a station
link, the media window seems to load partially and sit there. It
says either transferring data from mlb.mlb.com or something about
gdx.mlb.com. It doesn't load far enough for me to log in. It
doesn't work in either ie or fire fox. Any ideas as how to fix this?

One further note, if you use the search string

recap

you will be on the line above the day's first listing.
Using WE6.1, the games are listed in Table 1.

Re: short Wave radio questions

2008-03-31 Thread Bob Seed
I too have one of these radios, the Sony ICF-7600D. Bought it in New York
about 20 years ago. They refered it as being a grey market radio. Also have
a Barlo Wadley. This set is built like a tank, and comes from South Africa.

I know this is probably off topic so maybe this will limit the life of
 this
 thread.

To explore the world of portable shortwave radios, go to the link:

Three receivers on that page are worthy of consideration depending on how
 heavy your wallet is.
