 Hi

I use a toshiba laptop with sonic record now and dla. I can
copy music cd's, send files to burn on to cd but I can't
seem to find out how to copy data disks. I know it can be
 done but it's not easy.

My cd/dvd writer is an optical drive and nero is not
compatible with the drive unfortunately. Apart from sonic
software are there any other programs that would work with
 this type of drive?

 Hi

I simply wish to duplicate the whole cd, i.e. burn another
copy of the disk, not copy files to a disk, I can do that
with record now using the send to feature in xp. I can't
seem to be able to actually copy the whole disk.

 Hi Adrian,
Data cd's are copied as they were with floppies - a
 typical control c to
copy, followed by control v to paste onto the disc will
 copy to cd.

 Hi,

Someone mentioned K Lite's codec pack on this list. I went and
downloaded it, but I'm not really sure what it does exactly. I know it
provides codecs for a whole load of audio and video formats, but codecs
 for what?
I looked in CDex and none of them showed up. The AC3 one works in
Winamp, is that all these things do?
I also got a copy of Oggdrop XPD, but it doesn't seem to be accessible,
because you apparently need to drag files into it.

 Any help would be appreciated.
 Thanks
 Brandon

 Hi all,
There is now, and apparently has been for a while, an AC3
encoder/decoder out there. Actually, there are a few flavors of the same
basic design, involving different user interfaces.
The site at which the guide for using one of the flavors is at:
 http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=86897
There you can download the command line version, and there is a link to
the latest version of the recommended GUI. There are other downloads on
the page of the command line version of this program. You may have to be
cautious if you get the latest version of BeLight because there are
compiles for different architectures, and I'm not exactly sure which
ones work with which processors. I have the normal version on a Sempron
3000 and I'm getting a few errors, so I'll have to test others and let
you people know what I come up with.

what, the ac3 filter or the k lite codec pack?
the ac3 filter enables you to watch and skip forward avi files in winamp.
the k lite codec pack is a package of fillters and plug ins for dvd and
other stuff.

if you click on the 5 meg file it will come down well before the bigger file
anyways, theres no need to stop the other file.
if you are sharing files, this helps as people don't like leechers, and

 Hi Chris,
The first file I was downloading had a size of 111MB (not a missprint) and
was on it for over an hour and it was only at 24 percent. I wanted to go
 to
the second file, wwhich was only 5MB so I could get it done, then go back
 to
 that really big file.
 Hope this makes sense.
Is what I wanted to do possible, and if so, what keystrokes would a person

Re: Win Mx question

2007-01-15 Thread simon.dowling
hi frank, taken from the tutorial I wrote see below:
click on the
share files button, then share folder button.
a list of all folders and drives will come up on your pc, what you are
willing to share.
then you can search your pc for the folders you want to share with other
people.
it will say, hold down shift when clicking ok to exclude sub folders.
just share my music folder, and press the ok button.
winMX will take a while to rebuild the library again, especially if you have
a large collection of files in there.
now people will be able to upload from you.
I will send you the tutorial off list.

I never had a mail from this list pertaining to that off of this list.
as a manager off a couple of email lists, I had to ban a certain member from
my groups, as they were blatantly using bad language, whilst I am not a

but to ban the member in question.
also, I don't think that you should announce the banning of a member

 Ladies and gentlemen,

Lynne King has been banned from subscribing to the PC-Audio
list. I have contacted him several times in the passed about
using foul and degrading language but he apparently chose to
not adhere to my request. I don't think messages of the type
he posted recently to the list are appropriate.

If he subscribes with a different e-mail list I'll deal with it.

 Hey Simon,

Got it! But it says that the port that it needs to use isn't open.
 I'm
going into some muddy territory for me here. How do you open and map
 ports?
The exact number it wants to use is 23474. Also it has something for
 the
upload and download speeds and judging from the test I ran the
 results
 came
back that I normally run anywhere between 384 k for uploads and 512 k
 for
downloads. Don't quite get all of this just yet.

hi yes indeed its still about and you can get it from:
www.whitestick.co.uk
there is a patch you need to enable to connect to the winmx servers, if you

the patch is the ws32.dll patch, you put that in the winmx directory, and it
gets round the problem of when the developers pulled the plug on there

hi if you go to:
http://www.kitchensinc.net/
follow the link to text to speech games, then click to robinsons brians site
that is where you can find the engine with 2 extra voices.

I had the problem ever since I uninstalled the A T T 1.3 voices I
had to install 1.4. I should have just over wrote the 1.3
installation with 1.4 but did not. When I uninstalled 1.3 the problem
you all have began on my machine. I thought with the installation of
1.4 it would fix, but no. I got narrator back though with another
fix, (forgot which one) but not being able to choose another voice. I
can choose it but when I attempt to leave the dialog box it comes up
 with that message.

ok now go to programs and select say pad, in there its a normal windows menu
layout, press alt and s, that will get you to the speech menu if you then
set the main voice to mike or Mary, and then the special voice menus
narrator will use the selected voice next time you run it.

Re: Windows SAPI 5 problems.

2006-06-28 Thread simon.dowling
hi nick, just heard of Jim, and he said it won't in stall on his machine.
I had to supply basic info to microsoft about my pc, so that may have
something to do with it, I will send it you though so you can see if it
takes on your system.
but first, try deleting the user lexicon dat file as it may have been
corrupted.
you can find this under documents and setings, what ever your called in
there, application data, and microsoft speech.
reboot and the lexicon database will be rebuilt.

 Hi Simon,

I'm having this same problem with sapi 5 on this pc of mine as well and
couldn't find any type of repair for it. Could you send me a copy of the
patch as well? It may also solve another problem I'm having with my
microphone as well because whatever's wrong with sapi seems to be
 affecting
it as well. Thanks a lot man.

 Hi Folks:

I recently installed a speech engine from ScanSoft. After un-installing
 the
Speech engine, I am not able to get any SAPI 5 voices working from the
Windows speech control, found in the Control panel. I receive the
 following
 message:

 Speech Properties
This voice cannot be played. Please try selecting another voice or
selecting a different audio output device.
 OK

I did try other devices; however with no luck.

 Any suggestions?

some dvd's will play epasodes one after the other. others will not. it
depends on the make up of the dvd. in power dvd you have to go to the next
epasode and click on it to play it. you might also want to try dvd audio

Re: Creating Audio CD Out of MP3 Files?

2006-03-22 Thread simon.dowling
ok here goes:
1. create a folder where to put your mp3s first, if they are to big you can
change the size in goldwave.
2. whether you use Nero, roxio or sonic, put a blank disk in your writer.
3. create a new job, in sonics record now dx, its called audio choose this
by pressing enter.
now you need to find the add tracks button, press this and then you need to
look for the folder where you put the mp3s.
4. when you have located the mp3s, select all and press open. the mp3s will
be copied to the cd writer temp folder.
5, press record, and it will start the process for you. all the programs are
window menu based, so if you no how to open save etc you will have no
problems.

this is a reasonable request! as strange as it looks, I think the
functions do the same things as in earlier versions, but the windows are
set up different enough that you can't move the screen reader cursor to
them with ordinary windows conventions. I can't even get a list of hot

with about 6-7 times as much content on it? Or am I better off using movie
maker to import the podcasts or whatever and export that as a movie minus
 the visual part.
 Thanks.

Re: sonic record now

2005-08-15 Thread simon.dowling

hi Scot, its 100 percent accessible using hal anyways.
its all keyboard driven, and a lot faster than dare I say roxio and perhaps
Nero.
the layout is a little different first, but after a while you get used to
it.
example, you want to create an audio disk, you choose it from the jobs in
the file menu bar by pressing the alt key to bbring the menu up.
you can then set the recording speed and how many copies etc from the main
window.
then you click on add track button, this will let you browse through the
media you have on your computer that you want to add to the project, select
what you want, and press open.

this will copy the items to a temp directory.
then go back in to the file menu, and select record from there, or you can
press 1 of the function keys think its f6 but it will tell you the short cut
when you land on it from the menus.

you can do video disks, disk to disk, mp3 disks, data disk etc.

Hi folks,

I'm wondering what people's experiences are with Sonic Record now. I'm
mostly interested in the accessibility of things like copying cd's,
burning cd's, ripping tracks.

I may be working with someone who has this program, (Sonic I mean), and I
only have the vaguest sense of the program.

Re: configuring cddb in cdex 1.51

2005-06-19 Thread simon.dowling

hi Donald, in settings you have two cddb pages.
1 is the local cddb page, this is where the names styles and other
information is stored usually it resides in my music.
the second page is the remote cddb page, if you put a tick in the auto
connect to remote cddb box, when you put a cd in, it will search for any
artists matching your cd.
that's all you really need to do, and it should work with Nero too, although
I use roxio myself, and that uses the grace notes cddb.

there are some grate tutorials out there both for roxio which I use and I am totally

there are a lot more functionality with both programs rather than the premier program.
if your friend is just starting out they can evaluate the pprog for 30 days I think or

it is ok for the novice user just starting out, but many computers come with a version
of Nero or roxio already installed inclusive in the price.

  Hello everyone,
Can someone give me some tips on how to use Skipe?
I downloaded it last night, and I've been trying to figure it out, but there
are things that are confusing to me.
First of all, I'm not exactly sure which version I should be using. I found
some information on the JFWLite site, and I downloaded the scripts that were
  there.
However, the program wasn't there, or the link didn't work to be exact.
Anyway, that version was a beta version.
So anyway, I got the version I have installed from the Skipe website.
I've been trying to find people to add, but I think what I'm seeing in the
dialog boxes aren't correct. I'm being told they are one thing, when they
  are actually something else.
For instance, it might say email, but that's not the box where you would
  type the email address.
  I am using Jaws 5.
If anyone can help me figure this out then I'd appreciate it.
  Thank you,
  Terri

  Hello Simon and others,
I've already filled out a profile. That was the first thing I did, after
installing the program. I didn't have any problems with it, which I find
rather interesting now, knowing how the search field works.
Anyway, I did find it interesting that you say there's a combo box where
your birthday is suppose to go, because that wasn't what I saw. I just have
  an edit box.
I just filled in the info that I wanted them to have. I even left the about
area blank, because I couldn't think of a short enough description to leave
in there. They don't seem to leave you much room.
Besides, I figure that if any of my friends are looking for me, then they
can find me with just a little bit of information. I don't want just anyone
to be able to look at my profile, and know all sorts of things.
That's why I left most of the fields blank. To me, there's no need for this
company, or whatever you might call them, to have all of my phone numbers,
and all that stuff. That's just nuts, and there's no reason for it. If I
want to give it out to someone, then I will.
Ok, enough on this. Sorry, but that sort of stuff really gets to me.
So now that we know that the profile isn't the issue, is there anything else
  I can do?
Also, once I open the program, how do I log in?
I cant seem to figure that out, so I've been going under the log in as new
user. Sense it recognizes my account, it doesn't think I'm actually trying
to create a new account. I know there's got to be an easier way to do this
  though.
  Thank you,
  Terri

Simon, here are some shortcuts, which I compiled for aprevious message.
  Hope this helps.

One can rewind and fast forward using
cursor left and right or page-up and page-down. The latter two keys move
faster than the first two. How many frames each pair moves can be set
  via the menu system.

b: Marks the beginning of a selection

n: marks the end of a selection

Note, that one can have several selections simultaniously in one file.
To activate a specific selection, one can use the menu system of
  Mp3DirectCut.

The following commands use the numbers row above the letter keys, not
the numeric keypad on the right side of the keyboard. These commands move
by frame. One frame is about a 38th of a second:

1: Move the left margin of a selection one frame to the left

2: Move the left margin of a selection one frame to the right

3: Move the right margin of a selection one frame to the left

4: Move the right margin of a selection one frame to the right

With the following keys, one can exactly hear, where the margins of a
  selection are:

F5: Plays the two seconds before the left margin of a selection

F6: Plays the first two seconds of a selection

F7: Plays the last two seconds of a selection

F8: Plays the two seconds after the right margin of a selection

F9: Plays the file around the selection as if the block had been cut out

To cut a selection one can press the delete key. This does not touch the
MP3 file. It just modifies an MP3DirectCut index. Therefore, cuts
  can be made quickly.

There are also menu options and shortcut keys to save a selection into a
  different file.

To split an MP3 file, which consists of a complete album, one can use
the pause detection feature, which can be reached via the menu system.
It will set a marker before each song. These markers are actually
selections with a length of zero. To check the markers, one can go from
one to the other with Control cursor right and Control cursor left. The
file can then be split according to the markers. Or one can save a cue
sheet file or an MP3 DirectCut project file. Both would contain the
markers. With these marker files, one can easily find certain positions
  in an MP3 file.

To go to a specific time position, Control-p can be used. The edit box
is a bit strange, don't delete the words in it, just modify the file
position. One has to leave the apostrophes, which seperate hours minutes
and seconds alone. The program needs these apostrophes

Then, there are the recording shortcuts, which I mentioned in my first
  message about MP3DirectCut:

r: Opens the record dialog, in which sighted people can adjust the
  recording level

p: Starts the recording, when the recording dialog is open

As much as I know, there's no pause function in the program.

  s: Stops the recording.

   Hello friends,
The trial version of this software is available from :
   www.readingmadeeasy.com
I successfully downloaded it about half an hour ago. You would have to
  fill
in a form giving your name, address, e-mail address and telephone number.
After submitting the form, you would be allowed to download the trial
version. I don't know much more about it at this stage but it is there for
   downloading. Good luck. Kind regards.

Simon, I think you can set the threshold for the automatic pause
recognition somewhere in the program. If this doesn'T work, you have to
  split the file manually.

Andre, yes, it really is worth using the QuickMX with WinMX; it does nothing
  for a single file.
But it works well for several or many downloads together.
Yesterday, I had five downloads going together at a total rate of 101 kbs.
It takes awhile for them to get started but then they take off.

It never says so in the documentation file, but I'm about 95 percent sure
that that auto find in quickmx's menu is to tell it how many searches to
perform at once, not to tell it how often to search. It does say that
quickmx is continuously searching, so there's no need to tell it how often
to search. I went and reduced that number to 1 and my downloads pretty
  much
dried up, so I changed back to 10.

  Hi,

I have had your experience with version 7, though I never had a
problem with version six. My solution was to switch to nero six, but I'd
sure like to know what happened to good old ez cd creator. Just goes to
show you, in this crazy software game, newer isn't always better, lol.

  Rusty

  Hello List!

Has anyone tried Easy Media Creator 7 and, if so, how is it? I installed
it previously, but never could get it to show up with my screen reader
because of some focus problem. It is supposed to be like version six, but
something seems to be changed in the display or colors or something, as I
had no success with it. If anyone has successfully used it, I'd like to
  know how.

Also, with Easy CD/DVD Creator 6 Platinum, I seem to have considerable
trouble with direct copy. It doesn't seem to want to work. I do,
however, get it to work (the burn feature shows up) every now and then,
but it is hit and miss. What am I doing wrong? To get around this, I
use Recordnow DX (from my Sony Dru 510 burner disc). With that program, I
can burn a direct copy or anything with no trouble. I am using Direct CD
from Roxio and thus have no conflict with the other packet systems.

Well, thanks again for your help.
