Andrea,
I believe Brad has such a program known as Radio Replay or Replay Radio

I think it has a nominal one time fee.

Is there such a program that will log on to a site at a specific time,
record something, save it to a file and then close? If not can anyone
recommend a scheduler or macro program which might do this in conjumction
with say Total Recorder 5 Professional?

Andrea,
What are you using to do this?
The only software I've found which does this reliably is
MP3DirectCut, free from Michael Lang in Germany.
I can send it to you if you like?
I also have the instruction in a text file for doing it.
Do you want?
Thanks,

What I have is a file containing a number of audio tracks wit the
appropriate pauses (2 seconds I suppose) between each track.
What I want to do is to set the auto-region capability of Soundforge 8 to
search for and mark these pauses.
Which of the submenus in the auto-region do I change to achieve this
 outcome?
Perhaps some knowledgable person could corect me to the apropriate section

Re: Good PC Speakers

2005-12-28 Thread Harry Bassler
Hi Andre,
I purchased these speakers August 2003 find them to be excellent hi-fi for
pc,
frequency response of 20Herz to 18kHz.
AltecLansing VS4121 speakers from BestBuy.com $130.

Consists of two movable satelyte midrange speakers with tweeters attached
one separate subwoofer that stands 10 inches high on the floor giving more
than adequate bass even for pipe organ.

These suit me more than any others I've had including Boston Acoustic.

These rival my home stereo system which is impecable!

Just curious - are there any PC speakers nowadays that can be considered

According to what I have read about surround sound systems, most of them
leaves much to be desired when playing music through them. Is this also
 true for computer speakers?

Subject: nero question about folders?

hi listers I think I am doing it wrong so I am asking this list, how does
one copy a folder when you are in nero.
in other words I want to copy an album that I ripped on to the computer.
I want to copy the hole entire album, on to a cd.
can any one help, when I had roxio all I had to do was just control and
the letter c, but when I do this in nero it does not work for some
 reason.
 thanks for all future help.

Subject: Round up of Accessible audio editors/recorders

Hi there, well the subject sums it up. What do people find to be the best
audio editing/recording sostware to use? In particular, programs that work
well with either window-eyes/jaws?

I know that sound forge is popular for music, and there's also studio
recorder for spoken word content.

, but I note that the jaws help says that the support for sound forge is
for version 4.5... This was from the jfw 5.1 help.

Anyone had luck with later versions?

Also, has anyone tried the open-source editor, audacity? How's it's
accessibility?

 tia,

 Arthur.

Aad,

What is the problem you've had with Freedb? Is it just that many of your Cds
don't seem to be in their database? I've had that problem on a number of
occasions. But, almost always, a second or third attempt, after some space
of time, will get me a hit on the CD in question. I had that happen just a
couple of days ago, with a number of Janis Ian Cds, distributed by her own
web site rather than a commercial label. I thought I was going to need
sighted assistance to enter all the data manually. but, on the third or
fourth try, in the course of an evening, they all got recognized. I don't
know why this happens. but, in my experience, patience with Freedb is
usually rewarded.

yes, that's exactly the problem i have with freedb. but the point is that i
have made copies from cd's. and the numbers on copies from cd's are a bit
different
than the orriginal cd's
freedb does not recognise them.
gracenote seems to be more flexible
i have tried it for days without success, so unlucklily i will have to move
to another programm, and that means days of extra work to move all my cd's
in a
new collection. i have about 21500 cd's.

Ken, I believe they are usually played from the cd or dvd by default in
  alphabetic order.
To avoid this, you can control the order by including beginning the
name
of each folder with the sequence numbers 01, 02 etc.

Bootup Audio Sound

2005-03-25 Thread Harry Bassler
Hello everyone,
There are two wave files used for a bootup audio assignment known as
TADA
The common one sounds like an organ or synthesizer saying tada.
I'm looking for a second TADA which sounds like a brass band drum roll, it
came with a Compaq pc I had some years back but I lost it.
I'll be most grateful if someone would kindly send it to me as an
attachment.

Thanks, Harry, and Rob. Unfortunately, I don't have anything in my volume
properties called system mixer, or stereo, even though I think that I
might
have had it several reformattings ago. What shows up is the following: cd
audio, line in, and microphone. Would a new sound card solve the problem,
or is it the machine that I have - an hp? Thoughts are most welcome.

Is it possible to record files directly onto the computer using the sound
card? For example, if I'm listening to something in winamp, can I use a
program like mp3 directcut to record it? With stepvoice recorder, it says
to use standard window mixer to record streaming audio, but I can't find
any such thing on my machine. My master volume control shows cd audio,

Maybe someone can explain things, or at least, suggest a good sight to go
to in order to find out about conflicts among cd burning programs. My
limited understanding is that one should only use one burning program on
any given computer. So, if you have nero, you won't want to use anything
else. Then, however, I was told that there wouldn't be any conflict
between nero and music match junk box, but due to the inaccessibility of
that product, I never did get to test the theory. Real one says that the
driver is unavailabble, and I could never get windows media player to burn
anything. I haven't tried winamp for fear of conflicting with nero.
 Thanks very much.

I also record from cassettes with MP3DirectCut, as soon as you press the

fast
  as
  you hit the spacebar.
Then you have a great recording, instantly.
You can select whatever bitrates sampling as you please.
There are numerous features which I haven't found as yet.
You can fade in fade out.
You can split large files into separate tracks.
I'll never go back to SoundForge or Goldwave.

Yes, Gary, it is very fast, for instance,
if I wish to delete an unwanted commercial from a broadcast that I recorded
with MP3DirectCut, I find the beginning of the offender, press letter B,
then use the right arrow to find end of offending commercial press letter
N.
Then hit Delete keey the offender is gone that fast.
Its quite easy to navigate thru the audio file because you can hear the
audio while pressing the fast forward or reverse (right or left arrow).
You can also alter the volume of the recorded audio.
There's much more but I haven't learned how to use the additional features

Re: mp3 direct cut

2004-11-09 Thread Harry Bassler
Shawn, only that its faster easier to use, its faster because there's NO
conversion involved, NO .wav files or conversion involved.
When you record with MP3DirectCut, the audio is recorded as MP3 directly, no
wave files, hence its name:
MP3DirectCut.

Re: mp3 direct cut questions

2004-11-09 Thread Harry Bassler
Donald, perhaps the following will help you.
One can rewind and fast forward using

cursor left and right or page-up and page-down. The latter two keys move

faster than the first two. How many frames each pair moves can be set

via the menu system.

b: Marks the beginning of a selection

n: marks the end of a selection

Note, that one can have several selections simultaniously in one file.

To activate a specific selection, one can use the menu system of

Mp3DirectCut.

The following commands use the numbers row above the letter keys, not

the numeric keypad on the right side of the keyboard. These commands move

by frame. One frame is about a 38th of a second:

1: Move the left margin of a selection one frame to the left

2: Move the left margin of a selection one frame to the right

3: Move the right margin of a selection one frame to the left

4: Move the right margin of a selection one frame to the right

With the following keys, one can exactly hear, where the margins of a

selection are:

F5: Plays the two seconds before the left margin of a selection

F6: Plays the first two seconds of a selection

F7: Plays the last two seconds of a selection

F8: Plays the two seconds after the right margin of a selection

F9: Plays the file around the selection as if the block had been cut out

To cut a selection one can press the delete key. This does not touch the

MP3 file. It just modifies an MP3DirectCut index. Therefore, cuts

can be made quickly.

There are also menu options and shortcut keys to save a selection into a

different file.

To split an MP3 file, which consists of a complete album, one can use

the pause detection feature, which can be reached via the menu system.

It will set a marker before each song. These markers are actually

selections with a length of zero. To check the markers, one can go from

one to the other with Control cursor right and Control cursor left. The

file can then be split according to the markers. Or one can save a cue

sheet file or an MP3 DirectCut project file. Both would contain the

markers. With these marker files, one can easily find certain positions

in an MP3 file.

To go to a specific time position, Control-p can be used. The edit box

is a bit strange, don't delete the words in it, just modify the file

position. One has to leave the apostrophes, which seperate hours minutes

and seconds alone. The program needs these apostrophes

Then, there are the recording shortcuts, which I mentioned in my first

message about MP3DirectCut:

r: Opens the record dialog, in which sighted people can adjust the

recording level

p: Starts the recording, when the recording dialog is open

As much as I know, there's no pause function in the program.

s: Stops the recording.

Subject: mp3 direct cut questions

 Hello,

I really don't know whether the problem is lowsy docs or my thick skull.
But I have played with mp3 direct cut for a little more than an hour but
am not getting the hang of it. I understand a few basics such as
navigating through a file, and setting the advance distance of the page
up and down and the right and left arrows. Beyond that, I am somewhat
 in the dark.

Question 1: I want to copy a segment of a large file to a different
file. How do I do this? I do understand how to mark the beginning and
 ending points.

Question 2: What are the specific steps to create a cueue sheet?

Question 3: What ar the specific steps to make a recording with this
 program?

Sure wish that Harry or some other user of this program would make an
mp3 file showing step by step how to use this program.

 Thanks.

That doesn't make sense. After all, whether you plug a jack into your
sound card or hook wires to a jumper on your sound card it is an
analog
signal you're dealing with and there is no benefit one way or the
other.

There is a benefit. If your are a high end audio person, you know
 that
lining in a tape-deck to a sound card does give you a loss in sound
quality, graininess, and even some buzzing called bus noise, not to
be
confused with the common 60 Hz hum. This unit probably attempts to
allow you to record to and from the machine...directly, which may
mean
that the bus noise and other artifacts may be non-existent.

 John and list,
That was an interesting article. I'm one of those guys that has many
45s and 12 inch singles. Of course I've got cds too. The frequency
response on the records is incredible. That's providing you keep the
records in mint condition. I get requests from friends for certain songs
such as Maroon 5, as well as older artists. I record the 45s on to the
computer, and put them on cds for them. Yes, current songs are still
available on vinyl. As for the tapes, if you were able to get the metal
ones, those sounded really good. Talk to you guys later.

Re: Need software

2004-10-27 Thread Harry Bassler
Hi Gary,
Goldwave is good for converting .wav files into MP3 files.
The software called EasyCD Extractor from Poico is excellent for ripping
from cd's;
it searches multiple databases for matches returns you the names audio
for each track.
Most every time I rip a cd with it, it is found on a database shows each
track's title.
It is very Jaws friendly.

That's why I said that what's best is rather subjective. What makes
perfect sense for me won't necessarily make perfect sense for you, and
vice versa. I realize that a lot of people are having a great deal of
success with Nero, and I don't mean to knock the program in any way. It's
possible I wasn't trying as hard as I otherwise might have, since I was
just curious and there was no pressing need to change from a program I was
 perfectly happy with.

Hi Jim,
I bought my first Gateway three years back with Windows ME loved it.
It came with a 3year warranty but when that expired I purchased a new

This has 512 of Ram, 80 gigabyte harddrive, a DVD combo burner, along with
XP.
I liked the WindowsME better than XP.
I think its the XP that makes the last Gateway with ME seem better.
It is nice to burn DVD's as well as cd's.
This new Gateway was loaded with so many checking features that it actually
made the pc slower than the previous one, even though the processing speed
is greater on the new one.
Perhaps another model would run better, I have the 510S, sold for $1150.

Re: Mp3DirectCut was: recording radio broadcasts.

2004-10-17 Thread Harry Bassler
Yes, MP3DirectCut is fantastically fast, much faster than SoundForge or
GoldWave.
I use it for recording drama from BBC Radio 4 for editing out unwanted
portions of audio.
It works quite well with Jaws 4.51, Jaws 5.0 Jaws 5.10.
There are also scripts available if you need them, but not essential.
It can tell immediately the playing time of a large audio file, say 85 megs,
you can go instantly to any spot withing that same file.
Also, you can press the right or left arrow key while the audio is playing,
hear just as with an audio cd.
It's terrific!

I just discovered that Mp3DirectCut can record direct to mp3 with the Lame
mp3 encoder. The program has a command line option to start recording
immediately so one can setup a shortcut with a hotkey to start recording
from anywhere within Windows. You could also use your favorite scheduling
program to record radio shows. This program is free. I haven't had any
trouble with spyware from Mp3DirectCut. Check it out at:
 http://www.mpesch3.de/

It works well with WindowEyes. There are lots of direct access keys. The
record meters are in text form.

A few things take a bit of getting used to. Fore example: If you want to
place a marker during playback. You press b for set begin then n for set
end then c for cut while the file is paused. If the begin and end marks
are
in the same place, they are treated is a mark instead of cutting the
 selected area.

I wish other audio editors were as easy to use. I'm just about to try the
latest version which has a few new features.

I know it sounds stupid but that's the way they made it.
You need to try various percentages see which gives the highest volume
gain.

Subject: Microphone level too quiet.

 Hi all.

The subject line says it all. I have three mini-plugs on the back of my
computer. The first has my line-in attached to a minidisk. The second is
for my speakers, so I've plugged the microphone into the third socket.
I've
bumped everything up to 100% in the volume control of XP and did the same
to
the volume control within my sound card. However, the sound is very low.
Not an expensive microphone, but I'd have liked better. Perhaps there is
something else which I need to do. I'm using the microphone with
Goldwave.
Any advise would be very welcomed. Thanks.

 Best wishes.

2004-10-06 Thread Harry Bassler
Hello PTusing,
My new pc came also with the soundcard on the motherboard  Windows XP;
while the Sound Max worked, I did not like it at all, mostly because of the
very low volume it gave for the microphone.
After trying various things, I bought a new Sound Blaster Live from Micro
Center for $30 which pleased me all around, including greater volume with
the mike.
The Phone# for Micro Center is:

The audio for music is fantastic works well with Jaws has multiple

Why being so negative?
60 $ is'nt really that much and if it's true they support screen readers

For many visually impaired users, while individual screens may be

If you have a screen reader running, the Premier CD/DVD software will

 Hi all,

I know these subjects have been fully discussed, but I'm hoping you can
point me to a resource where I can read how to do two things:
I just bought a Phillips Aurilium 5.1 channel USB sound card. I'd like to
be able to play audio through it while running JFW through my original
sound
card on my Gateway desktop computer.
I'm running the latest version of JFW, Windows xp home with sp2.

Also, I just upgraded to the latest version of Winamp, and I cannot seem
to
remember how to set it so that when I turn the volume down in Winamp, it
does not affect the JAWS volume.

Thanks for any help or resources.

Hi Dane,
Thanks for the info concerning the Take Command, its great to find someone
who is still Dos oriented.
Here's a further question for you if I may:
Since I'm quite forgetful, many times I forget the name I gave a file
yesterday or recently used the DIR command with the /OD switch (order by
date) which generated a list of files, showing the most recent files at the
end or bottom of the list.
This tecnique does not work the same under Windows XP.
Can you solve this dilemma for me please?
Many thanks,

Are you looking at this list in the Windows Explorer in the List-view? I'm
assuming you are and (this being the case (and I'm assuming you're using
JFW)), then hold down the CTRL key and press the + key on the numberpad.

I'm glad you mentioned this actually as I was going to talk about lists of
MP3 files, suppose you have millions of MP3 files and you want to make a
list of them in a text file. Well you may find that the Take Command
programme (a DOS command interpreter) can be used to great affect for this
task, saves you writing everything down by hand and (to my knowledge) the
standard Windows command prompt won't let you create a listing, sure! you
can write the output of a DIR command to a file but you have to edit it
 afterwoods and that's a pain.

So now I've mentioned this I'd best get on with more explanation. Take
Command is the new name for the programme that many of us will remember as
4DOS by JP Software, yep! this crowd are still around and Take Command
 works with Windows XP etc.

Now for the commands you use to generate a list, its quite simple and this
example assumes that you have all your MP3 files in sub-folders off say a
main folder (in my case C:\AUDIO\MUSIC\. You run Take command and then
navigate to that folder with the standard CD command etc and then type
in
 the following command line,
DIR/B/S *.MP3 FILENAME dON'T FORGET TO USE DOUBLE QUOTES AROUND THE
FILENAME IF YOU'RE PLANNING TO USE A NAME LONGER THAN 8 CHARACTERS OR YOU
PLAN TO USE PUNCTUATION IN THE FILENAME.

The /b in the command line tells Take command that you want a bare listing
(that is just a list of the files and nothing else). The /s command tells
take command that you want it to search all Sub-folders and list the
 contents within.

oF COURSE! TO SIMPLIFY THINGS EVEN MORE, YOU CAN WRITE tAKE cOMMAND BATCH
FILES TO SPEED THINGS UP AND GET YOUR COMPUTER TO ACT IN A CLEVER WAY, i
 WRITE THEM HERE.

tHOUGHT THIS MAY HELP SOME PEOPLE AND YEP! ITS A round-aboug WAY OF
GETTING A LIST OF ALL THE FILES YOU HAVE BUT (TO MY KNOWLEDGE) wINDOWS
ITSELF WON'T LET YOU GET A LISTING INTO A TEXT FILE THOUGH i COULD BE
WRONG.

Naturally! this command can be used to great affect if you have a whole
stack of books and you wish to created nested playlists for them for use
with Winamp, Windows Media Player etc.

 At 11:33 AM 12/08/2004 -0500, you wrote:
how can I look at the entire name of an mp3 in a list of mp3's? My
sighted friends use the mouse to maximize the column but I can't get that

Andre, yes, it really is worth using the QuickMX with WinMX;
it does nothing for a single file.
But it works well for several or many downloads together.
Yesterday, I had five downloads going together at a total rate of 101 kbs.
It takes awhile for them to get started but then they take off.

It never says so in the documentation file, but I'm about 95 percent sure
that that auto find in quickmx's menu is to tell it how many searches to
perform at once, not to tell it how often to search. It does say that
quickmx is continuously searching, so there's no need to tell it how often
to search. I went and reduced that number to 1 and my downloads pretty
much
dried up, so I changed back to 10.

F6: Plays the first two seconds of a selection

F7: Plays the last two seconds of a selection

F8: Plays the two seconds after the right margin of a selection

F9: Plays the file around the selection as if the block had been cut

 out

To cut a selection one can press the delete key. This does not touch

 the

MP3 file. It just modifies an MP3DirectCut index. Therefore, cuts

  can be made quickly.

There are also menu options and shortcut keys to save a selection into

 a

  different file.

To split an MP3 file, which consists of a complete album, one can use

the pause detection feature, which can be reached via the menu system.

It will set a marker before each song. These markers are actually

selections with a length of zero. To check the markers, one can go
from

one to the other with Control cursor right and Control cursor left.
The

file can then be split according to the markers. Or one can save a cue

sheet file or an MP3 DirectCut project file. Both would contain the

markers. With these marker files, one can easily find certain
positions

  in an MP3 file.

To go to a specific time position, Control-p can be used. The edit box

is a bit strange, don't delete the words in it, just modify the file

position. One has to leave the apostrophes, which seperate hours

 minutes

and seconds alone.

These were just a couple of the shortcuts and functions of this

 powerful

program, with which one can also normalize, fade-in fade-out and so

  on and so forth.

hi, personally unless you actually want to edit stuff, i'd say sound forge
would be a complete waste of money as there's plenty of other programs
which
are either free or very cheap, not too mention a damn site easier to use!!
i
use recall pro personally, about $40 i think these days, and there's a
cheaper version of it too. easy to use and fine for the actual transfer.
you
certainly won't need sound forge or any other expensive software to do the
actual transfer, kind of like nocking a nail in with a pile driver!! if
you
know what i mean! i haven't got the web url to hand, do a serach for
precall
pro and it should get you there. think it's made by sagebrush software or
 something similar.
 email or msn

Hi Andy. I would think you'd need a sound editing program like
 Soundforge,
Adobe Audition, or Goldwave to help you with that.

Hi, can someone tell me the easiest way to convert my cassette tapes to
digital so that I can put them on cd? I am using Jaws 4.2. I know that
I
need to go to the line out from the cassette recorder/player to the
input
 of
my audigy sound card but what program should I use that is Jaws
friendly?
Thanks so much for your time you give me. Andy.

I'm not doubting you. So you're saying this program allows pinpoint
editing, noise reduction, filtering, special effects like reverb, file
conversion, normalization, batch file processing, mixing, and all the
 rest, and better?

Re: MP3DirectCut Url

2004-05-06 Thread Harry Bassler
Yes, Gary, DirectCut is quite good for audio editing, much faster too.
Here's something I use DirectCut for quite often:
learn the listening time of a large audio MP3 file, like fifty or more
Megabytes;
with SoundForge, it took a good while for the file to be loaded, then get
the time;
DirectCut loads the file instantly shows the total time.
Also, you can advance to any point by using the right arrow, allowing you to
hear the rapid advance just as with an audio cd, displays the Now time.
I still need to try other features but am pressed for time just now as I'm
transferring to a new Gateway Pentium 4, going from WindowsME to XP.
I've uninstalled SoundForge from here will not install it on the XP.
Best wishes,
Harry Bassler
