Thanks, I asked about the QT version because I moved away from the original

I know how to use that method, but it only does one track at a time. I know
there is a way to select all the files in your playlist and then to right
click one of the files, down arrow to send to, and hit enter, and then down
arrow to autotag. It will open up a dialog just for autotaging. I can't

Later versions of win amp have it. You basically hit alt 3 and then
shift tab past ok and enter or space bar on autotag and then hit ok when

The only limit on a thumb drive that works is the size of the thumb drive.
Each book from the library is a different size. So if you add up the size of
x number of books and that size is still less than your thumb drive, then
all those you added up will fit. I've had 14 books on one 8 gig thumb drive
and still had about 4 gigs left.

attach to your PC although any USB extension cable, that will fit the
cartridge, will work.

Also, I think the blank cartridge will hold as many books as you can fit on
2G. I've had 5 myself plus a handful of MP3 files. I've had more than that
on a 16G USB flash drive, so I don't think there's any limit at four.

 Hello all list members,
For anyone that wants to know, you can put up to 4 books on a 2 GB NLS
cartridge that was especially made for the digital talking book player.
But the people at your library, will tell you that you can only put 1 book

 on them.
I found that, not to be true.
I just discovered this, and I wanted to pass it along to everyone on this

 My best regards.

If they are in mp3 format, you don't really have to convert them. I've found
if you have a single book in a bolder on a thumb drive it will work in the

Greetings: My name is Scott. I'm new to the group. It has been
informative to read through the archives.

Is anyone aware of an open source solution that will allow me to convert a
series of m p 3 and wave files, and compile them into the digital book
format used by the National Library Service's digital book reader.

I am not looking for something I have to pay for, as I just want to listen
to my personal instructional m p 3 files on the N L S player and have the
ability to index them, create bookmarks, put them on a blank cartridge and
make use of the digital player that I carry with me anyway.

I prefer open source, as I use only the Linux operating system, but a
Windows solution is better than nothing.

I am utterly ignorant regarding the N L S format, so if someone is willing
to take time to summarize the format used or provide a good link for
self-learning, I'd be equally thankful.

Thanks in advance.

Can you select folders within iPod to play instead of going through a

It doesn't compare because both are based on completely different
principles.

The Ipod Forth Generation nano uses voice tags whereas Rockbox uses TTS.
Each system has its advantages and disadvantages, for instance you get
the title, artist and so on of a particular song announced on your Ipod
Forth Generation word by word - example: Dean Martin - Everybody Loves
Somebody Sometimes whereas this information is spelt out letter by
letter.

You also have more options over what kind of speech you want, this is
set from the computer you're connecting the Ipod with whether that be a
Mac or Windows system, with Rockbox I found it very difficult to find a
good speech engine to my liking, I did find one in the end though others
were just too fast for my liking.

The only problem I've struck with the Ipod Forth Generation Nano is that
some of its applications such as time/date alarm and the like are
completely unusable but again, that's what you expect to happen if
you're using voice tags, the menus all speak however.

We're up to the Ipod Fifth generation now and that unit has Voiceover
built-in to it so in other words, the Ipod Nano Fifth Generation has a
Built-in Screen Reader so its completely customisable. I don't know
even if you can buy an Ipod Nano Forth Generation now can you? I have
one here and I wouldn't give it up for quits I can tell you, well not at
least until I get my Iphone next week - if they haven't sold out in the
meantime smile -'

Hi!

Here's a summary of the accessibility features and functions found on
the new Ipod Touch as taken from the Apple Web Site.

Vision
iPod touch includes a screen reader and other innovative accessibility
features that make it easier to use for those with impaired vision.
VoiceOver

The same VoiceOver screen reader made popular on the Mac and the
iPhone is now a standard feature on iPod touch (3rd generation). It's
the world's first gesture-based screen reader, enabling you to enjoy
the fun and simplicity of iPod touch even if you can't see the screen.
What makes VoiceOver on iPod touch remarkable is that you control it
using simple gestures that let you physically interact with items on
the screen. It's easy to learn and fun to use. Instead of memorizing
hundreds of keyboard commands or endlessly pressing tiny arrow keys to
find what you're looking for, with VoiceOver you simply touch the
screen to hear a description of the item under your finger, then
gesture with a double-tap, drag, or flick.
VoiceOver delivers an experience unlike any screen reader you've used
before. Traditional screen readers describe individual elements on the
screen, but struggle to communicate where each element is located or
provide information about adjoining objects. This contextual
information is very important but typically filtered out by other
screen readers. For example, off-screen models used by traditional
screen readers to represent applications and web pages intentionally
strip away contextual information and describe web pages as a list or
menu of items. But with VoiceOver on iPod touch, you'll experience
something entirely new.
Because VoiceOver works with the touchscreen, you interact directly
with objects on the screen and can understand their location and
context. So, when you touch the upper-left corner of the screen,
you'll hear what's in the upper-left corner of a web page, and as you
drag your finger around the screen, you'll learn what's nearby,
providing an amazing new sense of context and relationships between
the items you hear. For many, VoiceOver on iPod touch will provide,
perhaps for the first time, a true sense of not only how things appear
on the screen, but also descriptions of what they are. You'll hear
descriptions of every item, including status information such as
battery level, Wi-Fi signal levels, and time of day. iPod touch even
lets you know when the display changes to landscape or portrait, and
when the screen is locked or unlocked.
The speaking rate is adjustable so you can set it to a speed that best
suits your listening ability. VoiceOver uses distinctive sound effects
to alert you when an application opens, when the screen is updated,

Does anyone have experience with this? Sounds like typing would be
cumbersome. The rest sounds pretty cool, I'm just curious how it works

VoiceOver uses distinctive sound effects
to alert you when an application opens, when the screen is updated,
when a message dialog appears, and more. And when VoiceOver is
talking, the volume of background sounds and music is automatically
lowered, ducking under the voice, so you can clearly hear what
VoiceOver is telling you.

It Speaks Your Language
VoiceOver includes built-in voices that speak over 21 languages
including Bahasa Indonesian, Chinese (Cantonese), Chinese (China),
Chinese (Taiwan), Dutch, English (U.S.), English (UK), English
(Australian), Finnish, French (Canada), French (France), German,
Greek, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese
(Brazil), Portuguese (Portugal), Romanian, Russian, Slovak, Spanish
(Mexico), Spanish (Spain), Swedish, Thai, and Turkish.
Getting Started
VoiceOver is built into iPod touch (3rd generation). There's nothing
extra to purchase or install. All you need is iPod touch, iTunes 9 or
later, and a Mac or PC. You can activate your iPod touch and enable
VoiceOver without sighted assistance using iTunes with a compatible
screen reader like VoiceOver (included in Mac OS X) or GW-Micro Window-
Eyes for Windows XP and Windows Vista (sold separately). When you
activate iPod touch using iTunes, you can enable VoiceOver to start
using it right away. Or a sighted user can enable VoiceOver for you
directly on iPod touch using the Accessibility menu in the Settings
application.
How It Works
With VoiceOver enabled, you'll use a different but simple set of
gestures to control iPod touch. For example, instead of tapping to
activate a button, tap the button to hear a description of it, double-
tap to activate it, and swipe up or down to adjust a slider. When an
item on the screen is selected, a black rectangle called the
VoiceOver cursor

Yes, now I know it's the play list and not explorer I'm trying to deal

BTW do you know why the play list is now unreadable in JFW? It use to be
readable, but I don't know when that stopped. I don't visit the play

menu via explorer.

Unfortunately, this is in the play list context menu. I have not had the
best success with the play list and jaws with winamp, so I don't use
this feature via the context menu much. it is a bit different, and has
some good options if you find a successful way to navigate the playlist
window.

Hopefully, this helps.

Hi all,
I've hit alt+3 on a few files lately and noticed an option to autotag an
audio file. So far it works great. It tells me I can select a group of
files and use the right click and send to option to have those files
auto tagged at once. I can't figure out how this is done. Do they mean
in windows explorer or in the play list editor, or what? I find no send
to option for winamp in the context (right click) section within windows
explorer and I can't find a setting I need to change in the preferences
settings that I need to change.

Any ideas folks?

This is an integral feature of Goldwave. From the file menu, choose
Batch processing. You first add files to the batch on the conversion
tab, then, on that same tab, choose the format and quality you want to
convert to. It works very well.

Hi all,
I'm trying to use goldwav to convert files from one byt rate to a lower
byt rate to save space. I keep the hz at the same level when converting.
Say the source files are 128 byt 44100hz then the output will be 32 byt
and 44100hz
However, since these files are just audio books I expect the degredation
of sound quality to be minimaul, however the smaller files sometimes,
but not all the time, come out shaky. Any idea what I can do to fix this
problem?

That's definitely an option, but not the best one for wanting to read a

I put DAISY books onto my ZenStone MP3 player with Sound Forge but
any audio recording program should work. In my case the DAISY player is
Victor Reader Soft so I just set Sound Forge up to record from What You
Hear or Stereo Mixer or Mixer or whatever it may be labeled on your
sound card and start the DAISY book playing. When I've recorded what I
want, I edit as wanted and save as MP3.
If you're using a hardware DAISY player you will want to run the
line level audio or headphone output of your DAISY player to the line
level input of your sound card and record from the line level input.

RE: Daisy books onto mp3 players

2008-02-17 Thread Jason Boston
I'm aware of the DRm and the victor reader. What I want is a way to
convert/move the mp3 files on the CD to my mp3 player so I can listen to
them in a logical order without needing the victor reader or the like.
If you open the cd and just play one of the mp3 files using winamp or
the like, it will play, but you can't tell by the file name which part
it belongs to.

So I'm looking for a way to get the mp3 files from the cd to an mp3
player in a logical order. A simple copy and paste won't do the trick,
I've already tried it.

Thanks,
Jason

Hi Jason:

In order to play Daisy books from RFBD, you'll need to have an
approved player. Currently they are supporting Humanware's Victor
reader Stream, and other Victor Reader players. This is due to
publishers ristrictions due to Copywright law.

What happens is that through a technology called Digital Rights
management, D.R.M. for short, your player gets stamped with a key,
this is done currently by purchasing a software package from RFBD
for $20. Only players with the D.R.M. key stamped on them will
allow the Daisy files to play.

D.R.M. is also used in Books from N.L.S. and Audible.com. You can
find the controversial explanations of D.R.M. for music and other
Copywright texts and matterials on the Ellectronic Frontier
Foundation's web site at: www.eff.org.

I think one day, RFBD may support other players, but for now
Humanware has the dominating market. I also recall that you can
ship your Plextalk Players to RFBD to get the key installed as well.

Hope this helps.

Jeff

Daisy books onto mp3 players

2008-02-14 Thread Jason Boston
Hi all,
I have a few daisy books from RFB D. Does anyone know how to get these
books onto an MP3 player? I would much rather carry my player around
than the cd player.

Or is there a utility to convert daisy books to regular mp3 files that
are in some logical sequential order?

Thanks,
Jason

Burning avi files to dvd

2007-12-22 Thread Jason Boston
Hi all,
How do I take a avi file and burn it onto a dvd that will play in any
dvd player? Also, how much time will a dvd hold if I want to put more
than one avi file on the dvd? I have several 30 minute cartoons and I
would like to put as many as will fit on a single dvd.

Thanks,
Jason

hello angel,

is it one of the c200 series.
my wife and i have a 2 GB c250 and a 1 GB c240 and both of these have to
have a setting changed before it will show up normally. you will most
probably need sighted help to do this, as you need to go into the menu
system go to the USB sub menu and change it to msc mode which is the
mass storage device mode. it should then show up ok in my computer. if
it is a c200 series model, you do know you can install rockbox on it to
turn it into a fully talking machine.

Hmmm, I'm glad to be living in new Zealand, land of the free. smile.
 Here
anyone is entitled to set up a low power FM station with a maximum
power
 of
1 watt, within two defined areas of spectrum. You don't have to apply
for
any license, just set up and go. The Radio Spectrum management group
 reserve
the right to come and inspect your installation at any time and there
are
fines if you're over power. You also are required to do a station
identification that provides contact details a minimum of every three
 hours.
But that's it. Simple. And you'll find some of the best radio out
there on
those frequencies. Lots of niche and community broadcasters.

Microphone recording on the fly

2007-08-22 Thread Jason Boston
Hi all,
I'm looking for a JFW friendly program that will allow me to record via
a microphone with a simple hot key from anywhere on the computer. Say I
hit control + alt + r, I want it to start recording and then stop again
when I hit the same key stroke or another key stroke. I would like these
hot keys to work no matter what program I'm in as long as that hot key
combination isn't already in use for the application currently on in
focus.

Any ideas out there?

I want this so I can record conversations at my desk without being
obvious about it.

Thanks,
Jason

Has anyone else experienced serious sluggishness when starting up
Winamp? I notice it if I start it via the desktop icon, by right
clicking a folder and playing it in winamp, or through the start
 menu.

It takes 15-30 seconds to start playing a song and almost that long
before I can do anything inside winamp like adjust the volume, fast
 forward, rewind, etc.

Anyone have any suggestions for fixing this problem? I'm considering
uninstalling it and installing a slightly older version. I was hoping

 for a better solution first.

mp3sparks.com and you can use your current allofmp3login to download

I've tried Rhapsody, but I'd like something that I could buy per

Can anyone recommend any sites that work well with JAWS for
purchasing and downloading music? I tried to download Itunes, but
  it

would not install, and I'm not sure how well it will work with
  JAWS.

I've tried Rhapsody, but I'd like something that I could buy per
song and not have to pay a subscription every month, if there is
  such a thing.

Winamp v5.35 sluggishness

2007-07-28 Thread Jason Boston
Has anyone else experienced serious sluggishness when starting up
Winamp? I notice it if I start it via the desktop icon, by right
clicking a folder and playing it in winamp, or through the start menu.

Thanks,
Jason

Hi

If you are interested in splitting mp3 files without using goldwave then
mp3DirectCut works well. It is free and works directly on the mp3 file
so there is no loss of audio quality. I use it on mp3 files created
from audio books on cassette to make them easier to navigate.

Seems I've heard you can use a feature within Goldwave to
automatically split a audio file into several smaller files based on a

certain length of silence within the file.

I have several audio cassettes where all of one side is one long mp3
file. I want to split this file into individual songs without having
to manually search for the silences.

Can't I do this with goldwave?

 Hi:

Actually, GoldWave has an awesome manual. Very clearly laid out.

 Cheers.

go to for-the-people.com and register. When you are approved, you
will
  find
a goldwave tutorial by Dennis aka startbutton. It's free and good.

I'm looking for a speech friendly goldwav tutorial. Preferably one
geared towards Jaws, but any tutorial that gives keyboard commands
will
be better than the goldwav manual.

  Thanks in advance.
