RE: Merging Sound From Multiple Computers

2012-05-12 Thread Kelly Ford
Hello,

I finally got around to putting the Belkin RockStar I talked about here in
place. It works quite well.

I obtained it for $10 from Amazon including shipping and bought several
audio patch cables from www.deepsurplus.com for $0.95 each.

This is definitely no high end solution but for basic merging of the audio
from several computers works well. There is a slight drop in volume for
each device you connect but the audio sound itself isn't altered.

I now have five computers all using a single set of speakers

The RockStar comes with five female jacks. Just plug whatever you want in,
be that sound in or out. There is also one attached cable that is to be put
to an audio source. The RockStar itself also comes with one free standing
patch cord.

Again this is nothing high tech but does the job for what I wanted.

What would you think of using a passive mixer of some kind? as long as it
isn't padded down to much, you could run it into a main audio amplifier with
a set of speakers.

Subject: Merging Sound From Multiple Computers

 Hello,

I'm trying to reduce the number of speakers I have for audio output from a
batch of computers I use in my office at work. In days of old I plugged
several computers into a mixing board but that board quit working years
 ago.
I'd like the audio from all the computers to play on one set of speakers.
Today I end up with about six different sets of speakers sitting around my
office. I don't want a switch box because I want to hear the audio from
 multiple machines.

Has anyone heard of or used something called the Belkin RockStar? Details
 are at

http://www.amazon.com/Belkin-RockStar-3-5-mm-Headphone-Splitter/dp/tech-data
/B0017PG8KS/ref=de_a_smtd. This says it is to take one audio source and
split it between multiple headphones but I wonder it would work reasonably
well in the other direction with the right cabling. That is plug cables
from the speaker jacks on all my computers into this and then connect one
 set of speakers.

If not this device, any suggestionson how to accomplish this today with
another product. My low tech solution right now to help reduce speaker
clutter is to plug the audio from one computer into the Line In on a
 second
and have that second computer just play the line in audio. This works but
has limitations, such as when the computer hosting the line in audio needs
 to reboot.

This isn't a screen reader issue and system access has the same challenges.
This is the way the flash has been created.

For the person asking about pre-season games, my understanding is you have
to pay $25 for the archives now once the game is over.

I just signed up for a new season of the NFL's Field Pass. This subscription
allows you to listen to all of the radio broadcasts via the internet of the
upcoming NFL season (depending on the package you purchase). I noticed a
couple of changes this season.

First, it looks like it's now using an embedded flash based player, which is
totally inaccessible. I don't see anything in the browser window at all, but
I am able to listen to the broadcast. In years past, you've been able to
select WMP or Real, and I've been able to use the Winamp with the WMP
stream. This allowed me to control the player and do things like pause the
broadcast, lower the volume and so on. None of this seems possible in the
new player. Note that you can still navigate through the web pages to find
the stream you want to listen to, i.e. the Dolphins broadcast of the Monday
night preseason game between the Dolphins and the Jaguars. It's just that
once you've selected the appropriate stream, you're now stuck in an
inaccessible media player.

There also doesn't seem to be the 7 day trial period that there's been in
the past. I always took advantage of this 7 day free trial to ensure
everything was accessible. This year, I had to take it on faith, and
unfortunately I was disappointed. I don't plan on asking for my money back,
but I did follow the contact link and opened up a ticket with NFL Field
Pass.

I'm just letting everyone know my experience and wondering if anyone has
gotten around this limitation yet.

Anyone Have Experience with Via High Definition Audio

2009-01-30 Thread Kelly Ford
Hello,

I recently purchased a pretty basic computer to do some Win7 testing on at
home until the final OS is released. The machine came with audio listed as
VIA VT1708B 8-channel high-definition audio. I'm wondering if anyone has
experience with this at all.

The sound for music is fine but what I'm finding is that with any synthetic
speech unless I have audio playing, the speech is cut off at the beginning
of each audio phrase being spoken. It is almost as though the audio needs
to kick in.

This is prior to installing Win7, so just with Vista. It happens with
several screen readers. I've used a variety of sound cards and audio and
not experienced this before.

If there's not a good solution to this, any suggestions on a basic sound
card to use just for the synthetic speech for the screen readers?

For what it is worth, the computer specs can be seen at

Better Integration of Pandora and Squeezebox

2009-01-03 Thread Kelly Ford
Hello,

I recall that the Pandora music service has been talked about a time or two
on this list. I thought I'd share a couple items I found of note related to
how the service integrates with the Squeezebox music player from Logitech
when updating to the latest version of the Squeeze Center software used to
power the Squeezebox.

For those who are not familiar with Pandora or the Squeezebox a brief
explanation. The Squeezebox is a music player that connects to your stereo
or other hardware device to play streamed music. Streaming software known
as Squeeze Center (formerly Slimserver) powers the combination. The
Squeezebox itself is no more accessible than most other consumer electronics
but the nice thing is that you can connect to the streaming software and
control the unit from a computer, web-enabled cell phone or any other method
you use to access web pages.

Pandora is a music service built around the concept that there is a
genealogy to music. Stations are based on similarities between artists and
songs you indicate you enjoy and other music categorized by the folks at
Pandora. Pandora offers free and subscription services. The subscription
offers a larger number of stations and the ability to integrate with the
Squeezebox so you can listen to Pandora away from the computer.

Learn more about the Squeezebox and Pandora at http://www.slimdevices.com
and http://www.pandora.com respectively.

Anyway, in updating to the latest Squeeze Center software, I noticed a few
new items related to Pandora. Most notably, it is now possible to delete
Pandora stations from within the Squeeze Center web interface. Given that
the main Pandora web pages do not use Flash in accessible fashions, I found
my Pandora stations list growing with stations I no longer wanted to use
with no way to delete them. While Pandora support was willing to delete
stations on request via e-mail, I found this to be a bit inconvenient. Now
when viewing Pandora stations through Squeeze Center, you have a delete
station link. Activating that link deletes the station from your list of
Pandora stations.

Other notable integration points between Squeeze Center and Pandora include
the ability to rename stations, the ability to add music to an existing
station and the ability to vote thumb up or thumb down on the currently
playing song from Pandora. In the case of voting, this was formerly
possible using the Squeezebox remote and is part of how you refine Pandora
stations over time.

I'm a big fan of Pandora and use it frequently both through the Squeezebox
and directly from Pandora's web pages. If I can answer any questions from
folks who are trying to use this service let me know. The unfortunate thing
is that as far as I know the first time you use Pandora with your own
account, it still requires sighted assistance to sign in once per machine
due to the way they are using Flash. Many other functions can be
accomplished outside the Flash interface by starting at
http://www.pandora.com/backstage. I use this frequently to edit stations
and such.

Happy listening,

Kelly

Recording Basics

2008-08-31 Thread Kelly Ford
Hello,

I'd appreciate any advice folks who have more experience doing PC recording
can share on basic setup to produce reasonable recordings of screen reader
audio along with voice recording. I have some experience in the area but
most of my recording has been making edits to sound files I record with
another audio recorder.

I have a Sound Blaster 2ZS and my biggest frustration is that the microphone
audio volume sounds low. I'm using the what you hear option to do my
recording at this point. I have the playback of the microphone enabled in
the sound settings. I also have the 20DB boost option checked. If I turn
the microphone volume up to a level that sounds good to me, I get some
electronic hum mixed in that I don't like. The hum is there even if there
is no microphone connected to the microphone jack of the Sound Blaster.

As an experiment I tried a notebook computer I have and the sound card on
that is just some intel integrated audio card but the sound was much cleaner
out of the box.

I'm using Goldwave for my recording program.

I'd like to get more into this for some projects I'm doing. I may go down
the road of an external mixer at some point but for now I'd like to see if I
can get the software solutions to work.

I put a sampel of the audio and hum I'm talking about at
http://workshop.kellyford.org/mctest.mp3.

Slim Server 7.0

2008-03-23 Thread Kelly Ford
Hello,

Apologies if this has been discussed here already but I didn't see it.
Folks here turned me on to the Squeeze Box more than a year ago and I've
been very pleased.

However, I just updated to the 7.0 version of the Slim Server Software for
streaming to a Squeeze Box and initial impressions are that the server
software is less accessible than the 6.5 version. You can switch back to
the classic interface which resolves most of the challenges.

The main reason I updated was because now the Pandora music service is
intigrated into the server software. Earlier you had to connect to the
Squeeze Network.

The biggest issues I noticed in the 7.0 server software were numerous
instances of missing alt text, actionable UI elements no longer created as
standard HTML links and many more areas that require use of a mouse. For
example to play an entry in the 7.0 server software, you now need to use
whatever mechanism your screen reader has for dealing with onmouseovers to
get a menu of things like play and add to play list to appear.

Just thought I'd share in case anyone else updates,

which I am employed. He is a managing director of the Logitech
technical support project, which includes Squeezebox. Hopefully, I
can get some answers from Logitech.

In the meantime, I would strongly urge you to open up a ticket with
the company's technical support team (which actually goes to my
 employer) and
escalate it as far as possible, not granting permission for its
closure until the access issue is addressed to your satisfaction. If
any others out here have Logitech products with access issues, I would
advise you all to do likewise. I'm wondering if we can somehow
utilize the technical support process of some companies to get at
least some of what we need?

RE: scheduled recording from the internet

2007-08-06 Thread Kelly Ford
For those familiar with Replay AV, how comprehensive is the database of
actual shows on radio stations? One thing I really like about Radio Time
and RedButton is that the database of shows on each radio station is quite
complete.

This was certainly not a formal comparison but in looking up a few stations
I listen to/record in Red Button on Replay AV, the station listings only
listed a few shows from the daily schedules. The missing shows were not
network programming but rather local shows that just seemed absent.

Mike, unless version 8.x of Replay AV has limitations not found in earlier

I found the Replay A/V feedback process to be cumbersome but certainly not
unusable. the one time I reported some alteration to their database, i

Now, regarding RedButton, does it record via the sound card, or, like Replay
A/V, does it directly capture the stream?

For my needs, at least, RB blows Replay AV away.
Here's why.
First of all, the underlying database the programs use in getting their
station info makes the Radiotime site, used by RedButton, superior in
that it appears to have a good number of stations that the Replay Media
Guide doesn't include.
Moreover, I observed that Replay AV must be loaded for automated
recordings to be made.
RedButton doesn't have to be opened and will, in fact, wake up the pc
from hybernation to do its work.

Don't get me wrong: Replay AV is a topnotch piece of software and
especially likable by a blind pc user as it follows standard Windows
menu structures. And I may well eventually purchase it.
While Redbutton initially turned me off due to requiring a Window-Eyes
user to extensively use my mouse keys (for which set files can assist),
I have grown comfortable with the program and have no regrets in paying
the
$29 registration fee.

Question: how prompt are the Replay folks in adding stations and
fixing links when reported via their feedback system?

RE: scheduled recording from the internet

2007-08-05 Thread Kelly Ford
I've been a user of RedButton for a while and like the program. I'm not
sure how it compares to Replay because I'm just now investigating this
program.

RedButton and RadioTime are very handy resources in my opinion. I use a
Squeeze Box (http://www.slimdevices.com) to stream audio in my house and the
integration with Radio Time is excellent.

Brian

Based on the comments I've read here, I am putting RADIO AV on the to
try list.
Let me mention another program that I've become enthralled with over the
last couple of weeks namely
RedButton available from

www.radiotime.com.

I am not certain how deep the UK program info is on www.radiotime.com, but
I am finding this site, and the recording/scheduling capabilities of
RedButton, truly fantastic for my needs.
I cannot comment on usability with JFW; but, what I can tell you as a WE
user is that if you are comfortable using the mouse keys, this program
becomes a breeze (and, of course, one can make things even more friendly
through the use of a set file.
Also nice, your recording schedules are maintained and managed on the
radiotime.com website meaning that you can make changes from any pc, not
just the one on which RedButton is residing.

Bottom line here: there are some great recording options available.

RE: Soundforge: jaws reads time annoyance

2007-04-03 Thread Kelly Ford
Do you have scripts for Sound Forge installed. I know this is a feature of
scripts for this program. Press ins+q and see what scripts are loaded. If
Sound Forge scripts are loaded, press ins+h and there should be
instructions.

Also make sure that screen echo is set to highlighted by toggling through
the ins+s settings.

Subject: Soundforge: jaws reads time annoyance

Hi.

In sound forge, when I hit spacebar and listen to the audio I've got loaded
up, JAWS keeps reading out the time progress. It obliterates the sound of
the audio so I can't listen to it properly.

I hear my audio in the background with jaws saying zero zero zero 9
seconds, zero 1 zero seconds, zero one three seconds, zero zero etc.

I've done an insert-S to turn screen echo to none .. but it still continues.

Does anyone have any ideas on how I can stop jaws doing this?

I've got jaws 8 and I'm running soundforge 4.5 at the moment tho it also
happens at work with jaws 5, jaws 6 jaws 7 and soundforge 6.

Appreciated.

Any short term get-arounds also appreciated.

...Damon

RE: Game Day Audio in Windows Media Player - not in browser ...

2007-04-02 Thread Kelly Ford
I've been able to control the audio just fine using the standard WMP
hotkeys. I have to use the pass key or bypass key option for whatever
screen reader I'm using but I listened to a few different games and changed
volume with keys like F8 and F9. I have WMP11.

I'm having no trouble listening to the Royals and Red Sox at present,
but of course there's no way I know to control the volume.

Try tabbing with the JAWS virtual PC or Window-Eyes browse mode off until
you hear unmamed view. This will ensure focus is in the WMP control on the
page. Shift+tab is faster.

Not working for me either. Wonder what makes our systems different?

RE: Macks and speech access.

2007-01-02 Thread Kelly Ford
Assuming this person is using a newer Macintosh, they'd use VoiceOver, which
is the built-in screen reader on the Mac.

There are some good resources and mailing lists off of

Subject: Macks and speech access.

Hi Folks:

I am working with a client who has recently lost most of his vision and who
would like to continue using a Mack with speech access.

Is there anyone here who can provide me with information concerning the Mack
and speech access?

I personally have never used a Mack so I'm feeling pretty out of it.

Thanks all over the place gang.
