Plug 'N Power Mics?

2009-10-24 Thread Roger Stewart
I need to find out where to get a Plug 'N Power stereo mic for use with
the Plextalk Pocket PTP 1. Guess it works like phantom power but
without balanced input I'm not sure how it is powered but I do want a
good quality stereo mic for on location recording in high quality mp3
using the Plextalk. Any ideas will be most appreciated.

Well, I just downloaded an exe file from Monkey's Audio that said it was
the right thing. It did have a Winamp plug in.exe which I ran. Found
the path to Winamp and appeared to do something but when I choose an Ape
file the computer still doesn't know what program to use to open it

Hi!

Is their a plug-in available for Winamp or similar under Windows
which will allow the playing of Monkeys Audio? I'm also looking for
a VLC plug-in which will work with the Mac or one for Itunes.

Re: winamp question

2009-08-15 Thread Roger Stewart
Well, most of what you want are just Winamp's own hotkeys and will work
whether you use Jaws or anything or no screen reader at all. Up and
Down arrows control voluneand left and right arrow keys control pan. If
Jaws is running the correct script everything should speak and there are
a few extra keys that will set the paning to different values. Open the
Jaws main window, open file menue and go down to Manage Program
Settings. In there you should see Winamp if you've made any change at
all to it. Make sure the checkbox for Winamp is checked and it should
run those settings when Winamp is in focus. And Winamp does need to
have focus for any of the Jaws settings to work. You can run Winamp in
the background while doing other work, but you can't control it unless
it has focus. That could be the problem. Good luck!

It's the new Lame encoder. Saving files to WAV is as fast as ever but

Re: mpg to wav

2009-05-18 Thread Roger Stewart
Don't really know of any key strokes for configuring CDex. All you need
to do is choose the CD reader and also choose the type of conversion you
want to do. All this can be found in the settings tabs and they can be
activated by the F4 key but also from the pull down menu bar. Once you
have settings open you'll be able to navigate around and set for the bit
rate and sample rate of your mp3 files and so on as well as many other
things which I don't even understand after using it for over 10 years so
don't worry about them. If you don't understand what a setting does
just leave it at default until you learn how to use it later on. Just
hit the F1 key and read through the help files a bit and it will become
very easy to use.

CDex will do this and several other formats and is FREE to boot! So
will Goldwave and many others but the free one is probably what you want
and is very accessible and easy to use. CDex also ripps CDs and you can
save the tracks in several different file formats.

Re: PROBLEMS WITH THE NEWEST GOLDWAVE 5.5

2009-05-11 Thread Roger Stewart
For some reason the new Goldwave doesn't recognize the earlier Lame
encoder. However, if you're on line, it will come up with a box
offering to download it for you. Just choose the OK button and the new
encoder will be downloaded and installed for you. It will then continue
and save your file in mp3 format. Only thing I've noticed is this new
version of the encoder isn't nearly as fast or efficient as the earlier
one. Not a problem with an average single song, but when saving longer
files, such as chapters in a spoken word book, the increased time is
very noticable. Haven't used it enough yet to find if the encoded files
sound better than before but I would hope the extra time would be worth
something.

Re: Dumb Question

2009-04-16 Thread Roger Stewart
I use a little freebee called Stream Ripper for Winamp. After you
install it, it always comes up when you start Winamp but it isn't
running--just ready for you. You first get the stream started and then
use your screen reader's systray access. You'll find stream ripper for
winamp in the list. Just do a single right click on it. You'll get a
pop up list and it is very easy to use. It just has start ripping, stop
ripping and exit. It also has a settings or maybe its called options
that you can use to select the destination folder to put the ripped
files into (called output directory) You can also select never
overwrite partial which I would select because if the stream is
interrupted it will overwrite what you already have when it resumes.
With this checked, it just keeps making separate files so you'll have a
recording of everything you heard. Hope this helps.

Re: Question about the Enqueue in Winamp feature and very cheap butusable Sound USB cards

2009-03-16 Thread Roger Stewart
You can indeed either edit or create a playlist in Notepad. Just be
careful to save it with the extension .m3u instead of .txt and winamp
will play it! There's also a nifty little program I use called
dirlist. If you have a folder containing music files and they are in
the order you want them played you just select (highlight but not open)
the folder and then do a send to dirlist. (you should paste a shortcut
to dirlist into the sendto folder) This makes a .txt file of the
contents of the folder. You just need to backspace out the title line
and then change the file extension to .m3u and you're good to go! You
can of course always just cut and paste the names of tracks around in a
playlist file to put them in the order you wish them to play.

Subject: Question about the Enqueue in Winamp feature and very cheap butusable
Sound USB cards

Hey, gang! Is it possible to move stuff around in the playlist editor if
you don't like the order the tracks are being played in? Or do I have to
start from scratch? The way I have been building playlists is to find a
file, use the applications menu, and just enqueue everything there and save
the resulting playlist. But I can't find a way to move those items around
if I don't like the order.

My other question is about a cheap USB soundcard for my Asus so I can run
JAWS through it. I know this was brought up recently but I deleted a lot of
emails and I don't know how to get into the Pc-audio archives and I don't
remember the password to use. Hmmm . . . could someone let me know? I saw
an ad about a Turtle Island tiny sound card but have no idea how useful it
would be. I appreciate your help!

Peace,

Re: converting from 4 track to cd

2009-03-11 Thread Roger Stewart
I use a Sound Blaster Live. Sound Blaster Gold is a better one. Just
depends on how much the quality matters to you. Not sure what you mean
by "four track". Do you mean Talking Book four track mono? In this
case, nearly anything that is good at all and with aline input will do.
If you're talking about stereo reel to reel tapes, then you'd probably
want a fairly good and quiet card. There are even USB sound cards that
are very good these days. As for software, my favorite for doing the
transfer is Goldwave. Very accessible and easy to use after getting
used to it. You can make very precise edits with it and you can have a
free demo version that lets you do up to 100 operations per boot
session. You can buy it for $45 U.S. at least that's what I paid for
it and don't think the price has changed. If you don't need the editing
function then CDEX is your choice. It is completely free. Will record
sound to several formats including .wav and mp3. For burning the CD I
prefer Nero but EZ CD DA extractor is also very good and it can do
conversions as well as burn. So you have several choices and others on
this list probably have others as well.

Thanks. It sounds very complicated.

I do this kind of thing all the time. You need a sound card and an
audio patch cord that will connect between the output of the cassette
machine and the line in of the sound card. To record I prefer
Goldwave as you can not only record, but precisely edit the beginning
and end of each track or segment however you want the files to be and
you can also set the volume level to maximum without distortion and
even do some noise reduction in many cases. CDex will also record
directly in mp3 format and you can turn on normalization to set the
level but there's no editing or noise reduction features. And you'll
also want Nero or other CD writing software and, of course, a CD-R
drive which come with just about every computer these days to turn
the sound files to CD. If you want audio CDs that will play on any
CD player then you'll want to record the files as .wav instead of mp3
but the process is the same regardless of what kind of final CD you
want. Mp3 files won't usually play on audio CD players but should
play on DVD players. Hope this helps.

Re: Problem playing .cda format

2009-02-23 Thread Roger Stewart
The .cda file format is the correct type for making audio CDs for
playing back on any regular CD player. It just means CD Audio format.
A .WAV file won't play in an audio CD player. So just let Nero burn the
CD with the cda file format and you should have a playable audio CD.

Re: 3gp

2009-01-30 Thread Roger Stewart
In my world, .3gp files are audio files. They are used by the NLS for
their new Digital Book standard. As I said earlier, the Victor Stream
reader makes them when you record a voice note. They are much smaller
than .mp3's and are of very good sounding quality for their size. There
are NO video components in them!

.3gp is the standard use by the NLS to record talking books and
magazines. It is also used by the Victor Stream Reader to record your own
personal notes. If you have the Victor Stream it comes with a CD
containing companion software that will convert .3pg files into .wav and
from there you can play them or convert them to .mp3 or .ogg etc.

Re: Fwd: The ACB Radio Tuner version 6.9 now released

I've found one shortfall in the ACB Radio Tuner that I hope this new

Hi,

ACB Radio is proud to announce the release of the latest version of the

Radio Tuner.

Please note: The website has not yet been updated, but the download link
will give you the latest version.

This new version won't look any different, however it will now allow us
to

change the station lists in the tuner without having to release a new
version of the tuner. The tuner connects to our server and retrieves a
list of the stations when it starts, meaning that we can add, change or
remove streams at any time without you needing to upgrade.

People should upgrade if they wish to keep being able to tune into the
Cafe
or ACB Radio Interactive, as we are required to change our listen links
due

to copyright compliance and the current tuner will not be able to access
these stations for much longer.

You can click the following link to download the latest version of the
tuner:

The website will be updated as soon as I get a chance but I wanted you
to

be able to get it now.

Super 2008

2008-12-04 Thread Roger Stewart
Well, I've tried Super 2008 for just a bit. Does seem to be mostly
accessible. There are no pull down menu bars but at startup it says
right click for menus. I hit the app key and I get a menu with lots of
options. Also there lots of buttons and edit boxes and I seem to be
able to tab to all of them. Only real problem is there appears to be no
help files at all!! F1 and/or Ctrl H do nothing at all. Those buttons
have lots of technical stuff on them about encoder options and they are
a bit beyond my knowledge. Too bad there isn't a good help file for
it. It might be hidden in there somewhere but I haven't found it.
That's all I can say about it so far.

it is besides being totally inaccessible. Unless anyone has had better
luck using it than I have in which case I'd sure appreciate any advise.
I can use the standard Windows volume control and change the volume

Re: some questions about burning CDS with Roxio Easy Media Creator 10

2008-11-20 Thread Roger Stewart
I don't use Roxio so can't be really specific. However I can answer one
question for you. All audio files are treated the same by every burner
software I've used. Example, Nero has a choice of burning an audio or
data CD. The audio may be music or just speech--it doesn't matter as
the finished CD is the same as far as file formats are concerned. Just
as an audio tape can contain either music or spoken word and the player
doesn't care which. So don't let that one confuse you--just burn all
your audio CDs as though they are music if that's the only choice you
have. They'll play back just fine in any ordinary CD player. Hope this
helps.

Station Playlist Studio. It is very speech friendly and is probably for
value the best broadcasting software for your buck.

Re: putting songs on to a mp3

2008-11-18 Thread Roger Stewart
Well, I don't know just what Hal is but most mp3 players have a USB
interface port and come with a USB cable. All you do is connect the
player to a USB port on a computer that has the mp3's you want on the
player. You just select them and do a ctrl-c then alt tab to your
player (it should just appear as a removable disk drive) and do a ctrl-v
to paste the songs onto the player. Just that easy! When you tire of
what's on it, just delete them and repeat the process to put on new
material anytime you wish.

Re: Converting MP3 to standard CD format

2008-11-18 Thread Roger Stewart
This is fairly easy. If you want to use CDex you just put all the mp3's
you want to make to an audio CD into your MY Music folder for CDex.
This might be different than the My Music that is in My Documents but
you can set this target folder to whatever is convenient for you. Once
all your mp3's are in the folder you just start CDex and hit the F12
key. This converts mp3 files to WAV. Once you have all the WAV files,
just put them into your CD burning software and make the CD.
Personially I prefer to do this with Nero as that program will take mp3
files and make the audio CD for you without you needing to convert them
at all. If you need to edit the files first, such as trimming some
dead air from beginning or end of each file, cleaning up some noise or
clicks if the source was tape or LP then use something like Goldwave.
This is a sound editor that is very accessible and will not only edit
but you can then save the files in any format you like. Just save them
as WAV, 16 bit signed stereo and you can then make audio CD of those.
Hope this helps.

Streaming Audio Software

2008-11-17 Thread Roger Stewart
I need some good suggestions for accessible software so I can stream
audio from my PC to a server where it will be webcast. Someone
suggested the plug in for Winamp. As Winamp is very accesible I figured
the plug in would be also. Boy was I wrong!! Neither the alt or tab
keys did anything!! Trashed around with it for nearly an hour and gave
up on it as a bad job. I sure hope someone on this list can help. As
ACB radio is streamed by other blind D J's then such software obviously
exists. Any help will be most appreciated.

Thanks!
