I don't think this is the answer as I've had these discs for 12/15 years
and during that time had at least 4 CD drives plus the 2 my wife has had
and none of them have ever played these discs.

complete analogue setup working here, with full recording capabilities.
If you don't solve this problem, courier the discs to me, and I'll send them
back with copies in flak format or the format of your choice.

It does sound like some kind of protection system. I'm not sure what method
of protection would give this but I'm guessing it may be something called
multi-session disc.
I wouldn't know how to brake this protection but you could use a regular cd
